Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good music, but falters in comparison to '02 edition.......2003-01-08

"Best of High School A Capella 2001" is full of quality vocals, but lacks some of the passion and high-end talent that BOHSA 2002 has. Let's start from the beginning: 6th Gear's rendition of "I Can See Clearly Now" was taken from an arrangement that I am familiar with. I liked the sound quality, but again, the passion was lacking. "Respect" as performed by Raging Harmonies lacks the intensity that one would expect from that song, but the solist is an extremely soulful vocalist. Jazz Incorporated's "Comes Love" comes next, and, although the sound could be cleaner, the jazz is soulful, and right on. The Chamber Singers from Washington are next with "Dulaman" and this one of the few songs on this CD which I think is "best of" caliber. Excellent choir! Same remarks for the next group, the A Capella Choir from MI singing "Siyahamba" live. "Take On Me" interpreted by No Strings Attached comes next, and continues the string of quality music, no complaints here either. SLACS, performing "Baby, Don't Let Her Take Your Love From Me" is next, and I felt that it lacked depth and feeling. Voxology is up next with "Walking Down The Street," which I thought was very well done. Like most choral groups on this CD, The Woodbridge Singers in the next track are well controlled and do not lack anything. Next comes the group Joint Sound from Indonesia. This is the only group which makes an encore appearance on BOHSA '02, and their rendition of "I Don't Want To Wait" shows part of the reason why. It is vocally sound, but lacks spice. They will follow-up the next year with a better track, however. Voices is up next with "I Can't Get Next To You," and is entertaining, but not vocally masterful. Euphoria from MA is up next, and their performance of "Can't Hurry Love" is classic a capella, no problems here. "Os Justi" as sung by a group of choirs from MN is up next, and it masterful, like the others choirs on the album. Just like the MN choirs, the concert choir from Arizona that comes next singing "Sing Me To Heaven" has passion and control. The album ends with "Lullaby" by Vocal Dimensions, which is not completely pure tone-wise, but is in tune and sung with feeling. Overall, the choirs on the CD rule, and few student-run groups show the same level of mastery. I would recommend this before the '02 album, to see how the groups of America (and the world) have progressed in a year. Not bad music, just not as good as '02.
