5 out of 5 stars Great music, intelligent lyrics, fine production...classic Nektar!.......2005-06-29

Sounds like a bunch of us found this English "Kraut" band back in our college days of yore. What a spectacular treat to be swept away again by new music from this fine band a quarter of a century later!

On "Evolution", Nektar has truly rediscovered the magic of their unique progressive rock music. Some really tasty guitar licks/riffs on many songs - kind of belies the age of Mr. Albrighton (and his recent woes with liver disease). His voice sounds great too.

The album starts with "Camouflage to White", which is a good song, but probably my least favorite on the album. The rest of the album varies between acoustic and standard rock (hard, but not heavy) and progressive, with typically thoughtful lyrics and inspiring, original melodies. No weak songs, and really very exciting to listen to.

Highly recommended for prog rock fans, and certainly for fans of Nektar - they were a special "discovery" for us 30 years ago, and they can still unearth new gems for us to delight in today!

Great prog compositions, exceptionally well-played, with crystal clear production.
Sweet as....what's the word I'm looking for?...

I value interesting music that is played and recorded well. This cd's rating was based on:
Music quality = 8.9/10; Performance = 9/10; Production = 9/10; CD length = 10/10.
Overall score weighted on my proprietary scale = 9.0 ("4-1/2 stars")

5 out of 5 stars The fountain of youth has been found!.......2005-04-11

Yes, you can remain eternally young!
Yes, you can go home again!
Nektar has returned, and we are all thankful for the effort.

I must admit to some reluctance in writing reviews in forums such as this. It seems that they eventually devolve into another form of "chat room" for devotees who write glowing critiques of their favorite artist. So reader, beware! I may become just as guilty as those about whom I criticize.

I "found" Nektar when I was in college. I have all of their earlier albums on vinyl. I liked their style of rock & roll. At such a formative time in one's life music has tremendous import and remains with you forever. Certainly your tastes may evolve, but there will always be that "soft spot" in your heart and soul (transmitted to the tapping foot) for the music of your adolescence. So it is for me with Nektar. And now they have given me back my youth in the form of EVOLUTION. When I play this CD the experiences and vigor of those long-ago days return and I am no longer a man of 50+ years who hasn't had use of a comb for the past 10 years. We should all be fortunate to have moments like these, however they are brought about.
In brief, for fans of Nektar, you will not be disappointed. You have my word.
For the novice, this is one helluva rock-n-roll album!
Either way, get it and play it...LOUD! It's that kind of music.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album.......2005-03-12

Anybody who reads these fan reviews must be a Nektar fan or you would not be looking for them here at Amazon.
Get this new Cd by them. There is no reason to wait. In my opinion it is one of the best albums on 2004.
There are three of the original four members playing on this album, the one missing is the great Mo Moore. A big loss indeed, but the new bass player is excellent. He even plays a Rickenbacker.
There is not anything close to a weak song on this album, not that I expected it but is blew my mind on just how strong from start to finish that "Evolution" really is.
The musicianship and lyrics are just top notch. One again we have a true "concept" album from this great band. Do your-self a favor and add this to your collection, you will not regret it.

5 out of 5 stars Nektar has returned!.......2005-03-12

I'll keep this short and sweet-if you enjoyed Nektar, get this CD. Roye Albrighton, Taff Freeman and Ron Howden are back (joined by a great bassist and vocalist) and have picked up right where they left off-Taff even plays mellotron! Let's all encourage these guys to keep making great music by buying their product.

4 out of 5 stars now THIS is Nektar.......2005-02-07

THIS the Nektart album I waited and hoped for. As close to 5 stars as they come.

I have waited a good 30 years for something like this to come along from Nektar. I was once of the opinion that "Down to Earth" was the last great Nektar album. I have been proved wrong after hearing "Evolution."

I was excited to hear of their return, was blown away by their performance at Nearfest a couple years ago, but was not at all impressed with "Prodigy." Then comes "Evolution" and now presto, Nektar is back, and it's like the 70s all over again. And to this fan of Nektar's vintage 70s output that is very good news.

The creativity is back and the band sounds as good as ever. Even the album cover has the look one would expect from their most creative period. Hats off to Roye Albrighton and company...you've done it!

P.S. It pains me to see this type of genius overlooked because the mainstream music industry has perverted itself beyond comprehension. They should be ashamed of themselves.

Mason's music has a more honest style than most of what passes for music these days. Like Omar and the Howlers or the older Thunderbirds, Mason plays his rock with a funky dive bar style, but it's still rock!

I actually got this as a gift for my 7 year old son who loves many of the songs on this CD. Not only does he really like the CD, so do I. But I can only listen to it when he is in school .... I sneak it out and play the music. Do I feel guilty, not at all. The CD is a good one.

A great collection - has ALL my favourites on it. Plus the bonus is the DVD with a recent(?) interview with the Mann himself interspersed with video clips of the hit songs throughout the years.

2 out of 5 stars Too much narration.......2003-01-15

The music tracks on this cd are great, but be warned--the music is interspersed with an enormous amount of narration. It should be made more clear on the packaging that this meant to be some sort of audio documentary. If that's what you're after, you might like this, but I have no idea why the producers decided to totally halt the momentum of the album by interrupting the music to give information that is included in the liner notes. Very frustrating!

3 out of 5 stars The most complete Hayride Collection.......2000-06-28

Cover Art

The design of the set is done with taste. It's most black and white with golden fonts. This is a good choice since all photographs are also black and white. There are some great shots of Elvis on the Louisiana Hayride including images of Elvis playing the drums and accordion.

The booklet is about twelve pages in a fold out style with a lot of images and the storyline of the documentary and background information on music in the fifties. The CD's are "picture disks" besides the besides the track listing and the title there are two small images of Elvis on the disks.

Content

The title of this 2CD release is very well chosen since the content has been done in the form of a documentary. We can follow Elvis "evolution" from Elvis' first appearance on October 16, 1954 in front of a crowd of several hundred people to his final special appearance before over 10,000 people on December 16, 1956.

This live radio show, which began airing in 1948, rivaled the Grand Ole Opry for appeal in its day. You get to hear what the audience heard ...The evolution of Elvis Presley from a an nervous kid who wanted to be a country-western singer to the King of Rock and Roll.

The story is told as a documentary by Frank Page, one of the original announcers for the Louisiana Hayride and the man who first introduced Elvis on their stage. He takes you backstage at the Hayride and on the road with Elvis. His recollections provide wonderful insight to Elvis' performances on this renown radio show.

Frank tells the story of Elvis Louisiana Hayride appearances as an introduction to the recordings of the actual performances that survived the test of time. Starting of with an 'impression" of an evening out in the fifties to the Louisiana Hayride. It's a bit like you're there, looking around. We can hear Elvis "evolve" from a shy boy on his first appearance to the king at this last performance on the show.

Unlike all the other budget releases with various Hayride recordings simply put together this release gives the tracks in the right order with background info on the actual performance. Besides that this release is complete covering all available Hayride recordings from 1955 to 1956 in a very good quality.

We must make the remark that this is not the kind of release you put in your CD player and listen to while doing something Else. Since it's a "documentary" you have to pay attention since there's a lot of 'talking' on these CD's between the tracks. Another option is of course to program the musical tracks.

When Elvis left the stage after his final Louisiana Hayride performance on December 15, 1956, the show's producer and announcer Horace Logan tried to quiet the crowd so the show could continue by uttering for the first time the now-famous words "Elvis has left the building". The claim on the CD that this now famous announcement has never before been released on CD is untrue. It was released on another Hayride archive, the 3CD box "The Louisiana Hayride Shows" released by the Goldies label in 1998 (also presented by Frank Page). But for those of you who don't have that one it is now included so you can can add this piece of Elvis history to your collection.

Conclusion

This release is the complete history of Elvis Louisiana Hayride performances and therefore a great addition to your collection. If you buy this you can throw away every other Hayride collection you have since those are not as complete as this release, and don't have this audio quality. Well, perhaps you should keep one other CD, because listening to the same documentary again and again might get boring at some point.

    Product Description

Douglas Wain s Rock And Roll Evolution is just that: it is a case study (or should we say, a box study) of a start up, American rock and roll musician and his continued development. It is a 4 CD, 3 hour box set of music that chronicles the recording of Wain, first as a rambunctious teenager learning and playing in his basement to performing at one of the top New York clubs of its time. All the songs on all the CD s are written and sung by Wain. It s a brave and ambitious project partly because it feels like not one second of his recorded musical history has been left out. Wain s unabashed honesty in releasing this project is somewhat refreshing. And when was the last time your heard honesty and rock and roll in the same sentence. Oh yeah, one more thing, the songs are pretty good! In fact, better then most in a Pop Rock genre. Amazingly although some of these recordings were done in the 90 s, 80 s and even the 70 s these CD s were only released for the very first time in 2000. However, the main reason why this box set does work is because you really do see Wain develop significantly, most especially as a songwriter, from one CD to the next right before your eyes (or ears). It all accumulates on the fourth album in this box set which is called Live at The Ritz, N.Y.C. where Wain turns in some truly excellent pop songs. Bottom line? Rock and Roll Evolution is an original and entertaining concept and endeavor. It will be interesting to see where else Wain evolves to in the future. The 4 CD's are: Live At The Ritz, N.Y.C.
