Editorial Reviews

David Donnenfeld/Esquire Magazine, February 1998
"Béat’s emergence as a vocalist bespeaks a life full of experience. ...a unique young man and artist."

Product Description
"reasons" is a collection of original songs written over a period of several years. They reflect Béat's experiences and his growth as an artist and person.

Béat has often been described as a cross between George Michael and Maxwell but his vocal stylings and his songwriting are uniquely his own. On his debut recording, he helped create a blend of Pop, R&B, Jazz and Salsa which shows courage and creativity often missing in today's "Pop sensations". His songs speak of life and love - he asks questions and provides answers from his own life experience. There is a mood to each song which accurately reflects the lyrical content, and Béat's smooth sound and his beautiful vocal arrangements create an ambience that is immediately recognizable but not easily forgotten.

Throughout their nine-year career, Nickelback have stayed true to their roots, releasing five CDs of straight-up, unapologetic rock & roll. So how have things changed for the Canadian boys since the massive success of Silver Side Up and The Long Road? Well, brothers Chad and Mike Kroeger still live in the Great White North, and they still write hook-laden rock songs. The only difference now is that they have the satisfaction, 10 million CDs later, of smugly knowing that even some of their biggest naysayers will guiltily admit to singing along with Nickelback's catchy hits. On All the Right Reasons, one track definitely ranks high up in hum-ability: the first single, "Photograph," reminisces about the bittersweetness of high school in a small town--once again reconfirming frontman Chad Kroeger's ability to write memorable hooks. Regarding the rest of the disc: standard rock topics like love, lust, jealousy, and breakups abound, with riff-y delivery that longtime fans will love. The guilty pleasure bunch will also find what they need within the grooves, on the ballad "If Everyone Cared," the riff-heavy "Fight for All the Wrong Reasons," and the Metallica-inspired "Savin' Me." The disc's most impressive and simultaneously surreal moment, however, exists on "Side of a Bullet," a passionate revenge tale written about the killer of Pantera guitarist "Dimebag" Darrell Abbott, which features one of the late Abbott's guitar solos as donated by Pantera bandmate and brother, drummer Vinnie Paul. --Denise Sheppard

If you're a Nickelback fan, you won't be disappointed. Every song is great, Rock Star (track 11) is the best.

5 out of 5 stars For All the Right Reasons, This Album Rocks!.......2007-07-17

Nice and powerful rock songs became a rarity in today's world, dominated by hip-hop and electronic beats with some vulgar lyrical content. Thank God, Nickelback is around to rescue us from this perverse world that we live in today.

"All the Right Reasons" is a long-standing Billboard Top 40 album for almost two years in a row and not by fate. These guys really play good music. They remain consistent to their roots. They are competent musicians. They are one of the few remains of the true rock music spirit with an advantage: these aren't nasty or poser guys.

Honestly, the entire album is a pleasure. Picking one or another song and call it a favorite is just unfair to all of the others. Most records can be described in a few words and have a couple or so of good music. This one is truly an exception - a happy one.

5 out of 5 stars Nickelback is Fantastic.......2007-07-07

Great songs, great band. I play this CD every single day and sometimes 2-3 times a day.

4 out of 5 stars The Creation Of Pop-Metal.......2007-06-15

Nickelback has never failed to amaze me. Even though their newest catalog release has more of a pop essence than their previous attempts, they have managed to do something else: ride the new pop-metal wave. Pop-metal, first created by newer alternative bands such as Seether or Evanescence, has seen it's share of ups and downs. This is most definitely an up. It has amazing riffs, powerful vocals, and an arsenal of great radio tunes. Normally, I don't condone the pop revolution, but in the case of pop-metal, these guys have given it a decent name in recent years. Granted, you eventually get a little worn out by constant airplay, but it never stops me from occasionally popping this disc in my drives and just rocking out. Even the over-played "Rockstar" has it's kicks. Other than that sad attempt known as "Photograph," I can honestly say that every track on this album is worth hearing.

While "progressive bluegrass" might sound like an oxymoron, it's a good description of this dynamic acoustic trio's approach. Fans of traditional string-band music might flinch at Nickel Creek's experimentation, but there is little doubt that the threesome has attracted the largest crossover audience to the genre since Jerry Garcia. Still, the rigors of working together since they were teens have prompted an open-ended sabbatical at the end of their 2007 tour. Cue the Christmas 2006 hits package--it's the perfect time to cash in on the catalog with the band still hot as an active unit. Since Nickel Creek has recorded just three albums for Sugar Hill, it does seem a bit premature for this recap. But the label has done an admirable job by adding a bonus DVD of the act's seven videos and arranging the audio tracks in non-chronological order to enhance the flow. If anyone had any doubts that these youngsters were the future of bluegrass, Reasons Why should erase them. They never let their instrumental virtuosity on guitar, fiddle, and mandolin get in the way of writing terrific material such as "When in Rome"--a should-have-been hit on the order of R.E.M.'s "Losing My Religion"--and they also deliver the goods in concert. A nine-minute live version of "The Fox"--one of two previously unreleased performances that close this collection--proves they can mash up Bach, Bill Monroe, and Dylan with such cool aplomb, one can only imagine what the future holds. Until then, we have this compact reminder of Nickel Creek's strengths and potential--a superb collection that is as classy and challenging as the group itself, and leaves the listener wanting more. --Hal Horowitz

5 out of 5 stars Sugary sweet.... Your speakers will never sound better!.......2007-07-19

Saw this group at Stagecoach fest in Coachella, CA. The lyrical parts are sometimes thought provoking, but the music steals the show. These young musicians are amazing and truly goosebump material. Harmonies are dead on and whoever mixed this stuff should produce every known band! Even if you don't like country or bluegrass, this disc is a breath of FRESH AIR! The bonus DVD is a nice addition. Sara Watkins is cuter than a daisy. Too bad so many listen to the pre-packaged garbage on the radio today... These guys should be on top!

3 out of 5 stars Not bad, but not exceptional.......2007-07-18

I am a huge fan of Nickel Creek, have enjoyed them live, and own all their albums. Because of this, I would buy this set just for the live versions of "move that mountain" and "the fox". I already owned all the other songs on various albums, and was hoping for more live material. However, the DVD music videos are just okay, and the lighthouse song is truncated severely in the video. I was hoping for concert footage here too, rather than VH1/CMT videos. Oh well. The smoothie song video is a fun idea...

1 out of 5 stars defective.......2007-06-13

This cd was defective. It was suppossed to have two cds but only one works and the other one is blank.
I have a very busy work schedule and it is a real hassle for me to take the time to return it so I have not even started the process.
This is why I hesitate to buy online for this very reason.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Average Bluegrass.......2007-06-03

My wife found this group when she came across their song Robin & Marion. We fell in love with the music immediately. This is not you father's bluegrass band. They seem to draw from a myriad of influences and styles: a blend of bluegrass, Irish folk, DMB, and even some 60's American folk (think Simon and Garfunkel).
This particular collection, selected from all of their releases, is wonderful and serves as a good introduction to the trio and their music. The DVD portion of this only covers their music videos and I truly think they shine best in their live performances. I would have liked to have seen one or two of those included.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview.......2007-05-26

This CD/DVD set is the final chapter overview for Nickel Creek. Its members are now young adults. Of the 3, no doubt Chris Thile will forge a career, if he chooses, that will be as memorable as some of his mentors, viz Mike Marshall and Mark O'Connor.

This set is a great taste of a wonderful collective. God bless them all in future: good music, good souls and wonderful musical fellowship.

Vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, who successfully translated John Coltrane's "sheets of sound" approach to the vibes, became the acknowledged master of that instrument when Milt Jackson died in 1999. A veteran of many historic Blue Note dates, a bit player in the movie Round Midnight, and founding member of the SF Jazz Collective, Hutcherson calls this mostly ballads CD, with pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Dwayne Burno, and drummer Al Foster, his "love record." All of his powers are evident here: his melodic fluency, vast harmonic imagination, and his incredible ability to make the vibes sing. Like Lester Young, Hutcherson knows how to melodically tell a story, as evidenced by his shimmering takes on the Latin-tinged "Ode to Angela," and "I Wish I Knew," his sumptuous piano duet on the Bernstein/Sondheim classic "Somewhere," and his heartbreaking, solo number "I'll Be Seeing You," Hopefully we'll be seeing and hearing from this genius more often. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Like Fine Wine.............2007-07-19

Bobby Hutcherson really doesn't say much between songs when playing live. His focus is on the mood and the music and he speaks through his vibraphone. Breathing through pursed lips as the tones from his instrument resonate throughout the room, he will occasionally smile as Renee Rosnes impresses him with the textures she overlays. There is always that undertone of sophistication and subtle humour. I especially like when he ends a song emphatically by striking a low single note at the bottom of the register on his vibes. Take that!

Having caught five sets of Bobby's band over the last year from locales as distant as Vancouver to New York I was fortunate to have gained an appreciation for what was to become the CD, For Sentimental Reasons. Little did I know when I caught Bobby at Dizzy's Club Coca Cola last November that he and the band were recording the new CD. I think one of the sets that stands out the most for me was a Saturday night at the Blue Note during his CD release party this past June. What a treat.

The song, For Sentimental Reasons, is just that....sentimental. Ode to Angela is a breezy workout by the band, a great driving song. Listen to how Renee fills in the spaces around Bobby's playing on Embraceable You, Dwayne and Al provide a tasty backdrop. Along Came Betty steps out from the ballads, it is a pleasant groove that builds on the solos of Bobby and Renee. Somewhere is reminiscent of Manhattan Moods, that great duo record with McCoy Tyner. Who can help but hum the tune to Jitter Bug Waltz, it is contageous. Renee's solo builds and builds until she becomes the perfect foil for Bobby's solo and the two climb to soaring heights together, ultimately to leave us with that melody. I have always liked Al Foster's playing, especially on Skyline, Bobby's last solo effort, but his cymbal work live on Jitterbug Waltz is outstanding. What Are You Doing The Rest of Your Life - the notes land like dew drops - it's as if the song were written for Bobby. Don't Blame Me, like track four, steps away from the ballads and has a great walking bass line. Spring is Here, beautiful. I Wish I Knew makes me wish Bobby would do a samba/bossa type CD, great tempo and cymbal embellishments from Al. Finally, I'll Be Seeing You....Bobby playing with four malletts....exquisite.

Yes I am a fan of Bobby's, his music, his band and particularily, For Sentimental Reasons. His solo releases are like fine wine...better with age and to be savoured.

4 out of 5 stars Plenty of beautiful love ballads !! .......2007-06-29

"One of the hardest things in the world is to play simple, to give the listener room to become part of the creative possibilities of the experience"...
Thus vibes maestro Bobby Hutcherson, perfectly summing up the considerable appeal of his latest album, on which he's joined by a subtly responsive rhythm section pianist Renee Rosnes, bassist Dwayne Burno and drummer Al Foster on what the vibesman himself describes as 'a whole album of ballads and love songs'.
Ever since he appeared on the scene in the 1960s, the music of Bobby Hutcherson - "master vibes player" - has come in two parts. One is tough and abstract, the other, well, softer. It's still like that, and this record certainly catches Hutcherson No 2, the "romantic".
Essentially, it's a ballad session, though occasionally jogging into medium tempo for a piece such as Fats Waller's Jitterbug Waltz.
The mood is helped considerably by the rhapsodic piano of Renee Rosnes.
Even in this melting mood, Hutcherson's sound still has his trademark, slightly extra-terrestrial, feel, with a note sometimes left to hang in the air like a hovering UFO.
But he has seldom seemed closer to his predecessor among great vibes virtuosi, the elegant Milt Jackson of the MJQ.
Culminating in a gorgeous, softly glowing solo rendition of "I'll Be Seeing You", the album showcases the limpid elegance and delicately burnished power of Hutcherson on achingly tender material such as "Embraceable You" and "(I Love You) For Sentimental Reasons", but also includes spritelier fare such as a sparkling mid-tempo visit to Harold Land's "Ode to Angela" and an arresting version of Fats Waller's "Jitterbug Waltz".
The focus throughout is mainly on Hutcherson's understated power and apparently effortless grace, but Rosnes also shines; as the great man says: "Renee knows so well how to keep things open and flowing just by all the varied harmonic suggestions and implications of what she plays"...
Another classy, intensely musicianly album from Kind of Blue.

    4 out of 5 stars Ronstadt's credibility grab.......2007-03-22

    5 stars, 4, 3 maybe - I so go back and forth!

(Note: Elektra hasn't put the 'trilogy' together in one package yet, but I'm reviewing as if they have.)

Poor Nelson Riddle - had to DIE to finally get his picture on the album art!

He's the main artist working the magic here, and he does a lovely job updating his sound for the seductive 80's - especially that glistening electric guitar!

Ronstadt was SUCH a major radio menace with all her soulless pop hits, it's a shocker she got the courage to take on the Sinatra songbook - and miracle she does as well as she does.

No, she doesn't have Sinatra's vulnerability, dignity or pathos (who does?), she's got her technical precision, though - and that's a fine enough basis for the endeavor.

Ronstadt is weakest on the big, bad suicide songs ("Goodbye," "'Round Midnight," etc.) but comes off charming as all get-out on the fluffier ditties ("Falling In Love Again," "For Sentimental Reasons," etc.). Swoon.

Consider this cordial music, dreamy music, lingerie music. It's credible, even delicious at times.

    5 out of 5 stars Romantic music.......2007-01-10

Very enjoyable mood and listening music. We previously owned the albums on records. We are enjoying these wonderful renditions with Nelson Riddle's orchestra again.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Sound.......2006-08-24

This album is very good but her first "oldies" with the N.R. orchestra still remains my favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Great Music, Great Vocalist.......2006-07-27

Love the music of that Era and love the arrangements of Nelson Riddle.

    5 out of 5 stars This is a Ten-Star Album.......2006-06-30

If you have ever been in love, if you love listening to great music, if you want to linger a bit in the past with wonderful love songs and unsurpassed artists, THEN BUY THIS ALBUM. How can you possibly lose? Rock's most sure-handed journeyman, Paul Carrack is slowly working his way around to singing with every band in existence. And why not? He's had success with more than a few already, scoring hits with Ace ("How Long"), Squeeze ("Tempted"), Mike & the Mechanics ("Silent Running (On Dangerous Ground")), and as a duet partner with Carlene Carter ("Do Me Lover"). The Paul Carrack Collection combines those tracks (plus some others) with the cream of Carrack's solo work, including the hit "I Need You." Carrack is perhaps the most-heard, least-known vocalist in rock, though this set goes a long way toward righting that wrong. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars Great tribute to Paul Carrack's music career.......2006-06-26

I have to say that Paul Carrack has to be one of the best pop singers to do well in bands as well as solo. They do a good job compiling his best hits with Ace (How Long), Squeeze (Tempted), Mike and the Mechanics and his solo hits (Don't Shed A Tear). But my favorite solo song from Paul is One Good Reason from 1987 as that song rocks big time, from the horns to the guitars! Unfortunately, Don't Shed A Tear was played more during that time and One Good Reason got only some minor buzz. Reason seemed more comfortable to some with the low key rock guitar. But the other songs are good candidates to this effort. Paul just loves to perform and this collection justifies his major success as an artist for close to 3 decades.

5 out of 5 stars Nice collection for a good singer/composer.......2006-01-25

"Twenty-One Good Reasons" provides a good presentation to the music (and the voice) of Paul Carrack. Ace, Squeeze, Carlene Carter and even Mike & The Mechanics have received the benefits of working with such a good performer like Mr. Carrack. If you are seriously engaged with 70s Pop & Rock music, this CD is A MUST for you!

This, by far, is one of my favorite cd's. Paul Carrack has one of the most fabulous voices around and I believe, is very underrated. This is an awesome cd and great to have on when cleaning--you can't help singing along to! :) Love the tracks with Carlene Carter! A must have for even the slightest fan. I was lucky enough to see him perform with Ringo Starr (in his All-Star Band)and his voice is still so smooooooth!!

5 out of 5 stars More than pleased!.......2004-11-10

This compilation of Paul Carrick is no less than wonderful! It's got all of his major songs, both solo and with groups. The sound is great and the songs are all really great. I'm very pleased with it! If you are a Paul Carrack fan and/or pop/rock fan, you need this in your collection! It's out-of-print, but worth looking for, I'm glad I did!

5 out of 5 stars Master of Quality Music.......2004-01-19

In a career thats spanned 3+ decades, Paul Carrack's voice has not wained from his bluesy smooth sound that is always refreshing. Many recognize the voice but not the name, even with that said though every band he's been with has had a hit with his lyricism and voice.
These days of bubble gum groups that put out mindless drum track songs are a blight on the music scene when you have such a renowned and fantastic artist such as Paul Carrack who gets little recognition.
The tracks on this CD are 100% excellence in music. From his beginnings in Ace, to his accompanyment with Carlene Carter, to his days with Mike and The Mechanics, it's a CD you can listen to 100 times and always enjoy listening to it again.
While the CD is now Out Of Print, I would reccomend it highly to anyone who enjoys quality music and even higher quality vocals.
This is a must have for anyones collection!!!

5 out of 5 stars " I'm going to head on up, down the old Feguson Road........".......2007-04-18

What a terrific album. It was 1972. What a year that was.......

5 out of 5 stars "RHYMES AND REASONS": CAROLE KING SEARCHES FOR AND GIVES SOME ANSWERS.......2007-01-11

Carole King's "Rhymes And Reasons" is an album of "pianoscapes": arpeggios and pumping chords dressed with light percussion and bass lines. The result is a flowing, entrancing set of homespun songs that simply cut through to the heart of the matter while dealing with some weighty subjects.

Romantic relationships ("Come Down Easy"), lonliness ("Feeling Sad Tonight"), isolation ("My, My She Cries"), spirituality ("Stand Behind Me"), prejudice ("Peace In The Valley") and the struggles of life ("Gotta Get Through Another Day") are handled with her trademark of simple acknowledgement and wisdom.

There are no huge blockbuster hits here - just twelve spectacular songs that spin a cycle of life, of sorts.

After listening, one feels let in on some clues as to where we all have been and may be heading, while feeling a peaceful calm because "Rhymes And Reasons" has a tranquil overtone accentuated by Carole's sweet vocals.

I highly recommend taking some quiet time with this album, where and when its subtle nuances will wash over you and transport you to a contented place, aware of the troubles and trials of life yet feeling redeemed because of the warmth and placidity of this superb recording.

5 out of 5 stars Peace In The Valley.......2006-08-19

In one of the songs on this album, Carole King sings that "...peace in the valley just don't come." Well, I'm not sure why she doesn't achieve peace in her song, but I certainly feel peaceful when I listen to this album. The songs are imbued with a sort of vague spirituality. It's nothing to do with religion, but rather a simple goodness and optimism that causes listeners to recognize the negative energy all around them, and to rise above it for a while. In her role as spiritual guru, Carole passes on sage advice, meant to comfort and instill confidence. In "Bitter With The Sweet" she tells us that even though our lives can't be enjoyable all the time, when we are doing unpleasant things we are laying the foundation for good times to come. Likewise, in "Gotta Get Through Another Day", the reason for it is that hopefully today will bring wisdom, and tomorrow will be the GOOD day. And in "Ferguson Road", she finds herself ending a failing relationship, hoping to reach the point in the healing process where she just doesn't "...give a damn." In "Been To Canaan", the point is simple: she has experienced happiness, and she is determined to get there again. In general, the music consists of gentle, singable melodies complemented by Carole's trademark piano (frequent strong chords combined with meandering, cascading melodies), and mild percussion. The standout song is "The First Day In August". On this track Carole's voice, her piano and the strings interact to form something seriously joyful and achingly beautiful. Even so, this album did not generate any big chart hits, but that works in its favor. The equality of the tracks contributes to making the album the peaceful ride that it is.

5 out of 5 stars Stands on its own........2006-05-31

People always compare this album unfavorably to Tapestry and Music. This album is not Tapestry and its not Music but I love it. Carole King is a genius of a talent who doesn't need to top her previous work to make great music. Oh my god all I have to do is close my eyes and put this CD on and its 1972 or 73 all over again. Something about her mellow, easy, beautiful singing makes a man feel innocent again. Something about "Got to Get Through" really moves me. This is a piece of work not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Good reasons to purchase it.......2005-06-25

This piece is very close of being as good as Tapestry.Highly recomended.
When this smooth voice and melodic piano are joined great songs appaear.
That's what this album is about. Carole was on her ups.
The vocals here are always soft, very few high notes.
Some lyrics talk about weakening problems in life, others about things to
    be done with a lover.(No sex,polluted minds!)

Near perfection; track 6 is the weakest compared to the rest, but still good.
    Most beautiful parts:
-Carole singing "Oooh, I'm counting on you" in Feeling sad tonight.
    - The melody in the lines "She's gone, gone, she's gone, she's flown away"
in My, my , she cries
-Been to Canaan entirely, we all need a promised land, she says.
-The piano in The first day in August
-The piano solo in the middle of I think I can hear you.

Rhymes and reasons only deserves praises.

    5 out of 5 stars Denver.......2007-07-10

This was a gift for someone who was absolutely thrilled. For Denver fans, it is sometimes hard to locate the older music not so pop and not usually aired on the radio. PBS had just shown a special which I hope rekindles an interest.

    3 out of 5 stars Good Album.......2007-05-13

This is a good early album for John Denver when he first came to the public's attention as a solo artist. Some tracks come across a little pretentious but this needs to be included in any JD collection.

5 out of 5 stars A Rare Glimpse and Time Capsule.......2006-02-28

Love of the Common People, Catch Another Butterfly, Daydream... each wonderful gems. We see a glimpse of John Denver in the early years, as he'd come into his prime, before Rocky Mountain High made him an international star. In many ways, this album remains one of my favorites.

There's one other thing about this collection. The title song, Rhymes & Reasons, features Paul Prespitino (sp?) on the piano, and his bass line was signature to this recording. Until a large box set came out, this was the ONLY recording that had that line in it. It drives the song, and memories of that riff remain with me 30 years later.

Even the very short "Spiro Agnew" and his cover of "When I'm Sixty-Four" help show us the times that this country has lost.

For those of you who don't know it, John Denver wrote "Leavin' On A Jet Plane," which was a huge hit for Peter, Paul & Mary.

Listening to the clips now, I'm reminded of how rich and beautiful a spirit we lost. Take this chance to become acquainted with the man... or like me, take a walk down memory lane. In either case, it's sure to be a rewarding experience.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Album, finally out on CD!!!.......2005-07-14

I am very happy that RCA/BMG has finally made this album available in the US for the 1st time. I actually own the original LP that I picked up for $1.00 at a Salvation Army store a few years back. I recieved my copy of this yesterday and have played it at least 3 times today. Stand out tracks include John's original version of "LEAVING ON A JET PLANE", "DAYDREAM", "YELLOW CAT" "MY OLD MAN" and of course one of my personal favorite John Denver tunes, the title track "RHYMES & REASONS." The message of this song truly demonstrates JD's philosophy on life and brotherhood. If you own a copy of this album, give this track a real good listen and the rest of this great album because it will definitely "clear a cloudy day!" I also purchased the other 2 reissues of JD. "BACK HOME AGAIN" & "GREATEST HITS 69 - 73", which were already available on CD before, but never sounded this good! I hope BMG continues to release more of John Denver's albums on CD in this wonderful remastered sound with bonus tracks in the future. I also recommend the double disc ( and REMASTERED) version of "AN EVENING WITH JOHN DENVER" in addition to these 3 releases. Sheer masterpiece from a singer - songwriter legend. We miss you, John! Peace!

      Album Description

Ian Dury, like Ray Davies and Paul Weller was a very English talent. The colorful, metropolis-inhabiting characters like Billericay Dickie or Plaistow Patricia he sung about, and the ever so cockney music hall accent he chose to sing in, were a big part of that. But mostly, it was the detailed, poetic way he cataloged English life and the melting pot of musical styles he used to do so, from punk and funk to jazz and rock'n'roll, which left no doubt that Dury's work could only come from one place: the very heart of England. So few were surprised when after his death Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, Madness and more all lined up to pay their respects with cover versions of some of his best loved songs. You'll find plenty of them here, in their original versions, culled from his entire career from the mid-'70s with pub rockers Kilburn & The High Roads through the golden years with the majestic Blockheads right up to the last studio recordings at the start of the '90s. 2 CD set is comprised of 34 tracks. Music Club. 2005.
