There is nothing, in my books, wrong with a song that starts "I got kicked out of the Beverly Hills Hotel/I've been tossed out of better places." Tim Thorney's deep wooly (in the best way) voice and tremendously tricky sense of humour infuses this third solo album with big, memorable songs tinged by roots-rock and blues and harmonica goodness. Then I found out Thorney is an award-winning writer of advertising jingles. I felt cheated - maipulated, even - for just a minute, and then the sweet, hummable pop sounds of "Cool" kicked in and I just didn't give a damn about his pedigree. So what if he's written jingles for Molson Canadian or worked with the genius of Taj Mahal? Who cares if Erica Ehm co-wrote three of the 13 songs on this record? So he thanks Alanis Morissette in the liner notes. Big deal. What is a big deal on Extenuating Circus Dances is how seductive it is, how sweet, how singable, how funny, how addictive, how thoroughly stuck in my CD player it is.
