5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars I'm gonna go bezerk.......2006-10-30

As another reviewer stated, punk used to be cool. As a casual fan of 70's and 80's punk rock/hardcore, I have heard many songs by many bands, but those bands don't even come close to what Black Flag's "Nervous Breakdown" achieves. With only four songs in about five minutes, this EP released in 1978 on vinyl from this early Los Angeles punk band set the stage for a scene that was about to evolve into quite a wild rollercoaster. Before there were any straight edge, pop-punk, hardcore punk, and all the other sects, there was just punk-rock. Starting with bands like The Sex Pistols, The Ramones, and the Clash, it evolved through the 80's, 90's, and today, spawning some great bands and much more s*** then anyone really wants or deserves. The so-called "punk-rock" of today on MTV and being streamed on pop radio lacks the one element that made this stuff great, and that's energy. How could you express any anger or energy when you're whining, like most of the garbage excuses for bands do today? This was when punk appealed to the punk, not the mass audiences of 10-year old white sl*tty suburban girl getting brainwashed by MTV.

Anyway, back on topic. On the forefront of the late 70's punk scene was Black Flag, and with this EP, the saga began. Black Flag has had four singers in their career, but nobody does it better then Keith Morris. Even though he is only known for these four songs with Flag (he also did nine demos that can be seen on the "Everything Went Black" compilation album), he couldn't have been any better. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols is an obvious influence on Morris, except Keith sings and yells better, in my opinion. Morris did great things with The Circle Jerks as well after he left Black Flag. Guitarist Greg Ginn is a legend of his genre, and even though his playing is very simple (composing of simple power and three-note chords), it is catchy as **** and is genius in it's own way. Ginn's signature guitar tone of distortion and heavy feedback is introduced here, and with this heavy amount of it made the MCD that much better. The bassist and drummers provide a solid rhythm core. The drumming is very good, and remains interesting throughout the five minutes this EP is. The bass playing, while mostly matching the guitars, provides a nice bottom section of the music. The tone is also very good. Lyrically, this album is also stunning. The lyrics are very easy to relate to, and they remain some of the best in punk.

The EP begins with the title track, "Nervous Breakdown". It is the longest song on the album, clocking in at a little over two minutes. Beginning with a nice, catchy riff, Keith Morris enters with his classic line, singing "I'm about to have a nervous breakdown / my head really hurts". As the song progresses, you could hear Keith Morris getting angrier and angrier, and by the end, he is almost mimicking the Johnny Rotten yell. By the end, he is screaming "crazy!" at the end, then starts an almost incomprehensible bark of "I don't care what ya f***in' do". By the end of the song, you just want to break something. The song is full of rage, and remains one of my favorite punk songs all time. The second song, "Fix Me", uses the same formulae of the first song, with very good lyrics. The song, only being 0:55, still has the very catchy chorus that makes it memorable. "I've Had It" is the second best song on the EP, with incredible riffing from Ginn's feedback guitar and a lot of rage spewing from Morris' mouth. The final song, "Wasted", is a song that only Keith Morris can do. Without him, this song may have not even been capable of making the record. It has funny lyrics, but you feel cut off when it ends after 0:51.

When this record is done, you are almost forced to play it again. I have had this for a long time, and it never gets stale. I personally am a completist when I love a band, but if you are looking for this, get the "The First Four Years" compilation, a collection of everything Flag pre-Henry Rollins, plus a lot more extras. The band would go through some lineup changes before the band released their "Jealous Again" EP, most notably one-time vocalist Chavo Pederast coming in after Morris left. How important is the release of this? Besides revolutionizing the Los Angeles hardcore-punk scene, it provided a formula for years to come that people, mostly failing, would try to repeat. Before Henry Rollins came in and Greg Ginn decided to fuse punk and metal (not to our disdain...it was still great), there was the Keith Morris era-Flag, which was all about the straight attitude and rage that graced us with some of the best stuff ever created. A landmark in the history of music, and definately not to be skipped over if you are a fan of not only punk, but music in general.

5 out of 5 stars Back when punk was cool.......2006-04-04

Believe it or not, there was once a time when punk was not all about whining about high school, parents, and not having girlfriends. It actually used to be cool music! Well, even if the time is long past, we still have the music. Black Flag was an early hardcore punk band, but on this EP they are more punk than hardcore. But for 1978, this was some heavy stuff! Greg doesn't play solos on here, so the riffs are more straightforward. And here we have singer Keith Morris, whose voice resembles that of Johnny Rotten. In fact, all of these songs sound like Sex Pistols songs in my opinion.

Nervous Breakdown is slightly over two minutes and is the longest song on here. A very chilling song this is. Starts off with some nice punk riffs and then Keith comes in "I'm about to have a nervous breakdown/ My head really hurts" This song is quite a wild ride! Keith's voice gets pretty crazy near the end, and it all finishes with a cry of "I just wanna...DIIIIIIE" What a finish! Fix Me is under a minute long, but it still rocks. Keith simply roars on this song and Greg's riffs are just mean.

I've Had It has another nice riff at the start. Keith really sounds pissed on this one. You gotta love it when he goes "I'm going to explode, I'VE HAD IT!" Great song to play when you need to vent some anger. Wasted is another quick song. It's simple and to the point, just like punk should be.

Don't be afraid, this is not some whiny teenybopper pop punk. This is true punk music, and if your idea of punk is Good Charlotte (they suck by the way, but you already knew that) then get this and find out what punk is really about! If you don't, then you are simply cheating yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Keith Morris was Black Flag.............2005-12-08

This 10" record shows the raw power that black flag was before Henry Rollins rolled in... Good ol' Henry has been quoted over the years that no one could ever do "Wasted" any better than Keith did. Even though side 2 is only three minutes and eight seconds long you just can't help but, play it over and over..
Great lyrics on all the tracks..And after the quick spotting on Wasted the final lyric I was Wasted just puts a smile on ya...So, pick this up or pick up the first four years which has these classic tracks plus Henry's Damaged and Six Pack which are classics too just a diffrent style of black flag...

5 out of 5 stars Kick ass punk rock.......2005-08-11

It is only four short songs but this is still one of the best pieces of music i have ever heard. No exaggerating! The songs are all short and to the point. Greg Ginn had not yet developed his guitar playing skills yet but i think that makes it sound even better. And Keith Morris is an awesome singer,he truly sounds like Johnny Rotten. I love it when Keith goes crazy at the end of Nervous Breakdown (the song) and screams "I just wanna...DIIIE!" Wow. Talk about powerful. If your idea of punk is Suck 41 or Gay Charlotte, try picking up this album and experience true punk music. These are some of the best tunes of 1978, a year when punk actually kicked ass.

5 out of 5 stars Punk Rock, BABY!!!.......2005-02-09

Forget british punk or anything going on today, this is the REAL THING! Music made by punks for punks. Nervous Breakdown might just be the best damn punk song ever (even beating anything on Damaged). The rest are great, too, if a little short.

This, of course, was background music for a television production, and served the program very well. However, it stands on its own very well, too. The orchestration is particularly lush and the performance is very sensitive and introspective.

5 out of 5 stars Why isn't this guy a star?.......2003-11-20

Great songwriters like Troy Campbell are often passed over for 'marketable & saleable' tripe made for the brain-dead MTV 'educated' market. Campbell's is a master of turning a phrase, and has an incredible knack for blending his wordplay with original, thoughtful music. His delivery reminds me of Nick Drake meets Big Star. All of the songs are great, with highlights being 'Blind', 'Sad Truth', 'Rosabelle' & 'Ruby.' Gurf Morlix's year spent with Lucinda Williams pay off with his gifted production skills on 'American Breakdown.' Buy this, you'll be a better person for it. ;)

this great cd. it covers a lot of ground
and I've already bought a couple extra for my

5 out of 5 stars Troy Campbell continues to grow.......2002-08-09

With the release of "American Breakdown," Troy Campbell shows how much he has grown, both as a singer and songwriter. Framed by Gurf Morlix's muscular rock and roll production, Campbell is singing more confidently than he ever has on record. The songs are lyrically and melodically richly evocative - from the opening "Sad Truth" to "Sorrytown" to "World Keeps on Ending." Campbell shows he isn't afraid to confront his demons and nightmares, turning them into gorgeous examples of songwriting art.

5 out of 5 stars Troy Campbell: American Breakdown, A Roots-Rock Diamond.......2002-08-02

Back in 1999, I was fortunate to hear Troy Campbell's debut solo disc Man vs Beast. That's saying a lot living in Boston, many miles away from the Texas heartland. Having been a huge fan of the Loose Diamonds, his former band, I was eager to hear what the man would be up to on his own. I was impressed, but ultimately felt that the album sounded somewhat tentative and without a definite direction. Three and 1/2 stars seemed adequate. Recently, however, I was privileged to listen to the new cd, American Breakdown. It is an absolute wonder! Easily one of the top roots rock albums of the past year, it is a work filled with hope, desire, maturity, and direction. This cd needs to be heard and, if there is any justice in the music world, it will. Those of you who pick it up will be amazed at the emotion Troy puts in his work and the solid playing behind each song. Will it reach the proverbial "top of the charts"? Probably not, but I can pretty much guarantee you will not be disappointed. The world needs more of this. Absolutely!

5 out of 5 stars An American Voice.......2002-07-26

Listening to this music is like coming home. The songs are filled with the heartbreak and confusion that we all feel at times. Yet the whole CD leaves the listener with that American feeling that we can all start over with hope and new wisdom. It is a CD you can listen to again and again and consantly find new meanings and emotion. Everyone who loves American music should give Troy Campbell a listen. His songs are personal and universal. I am buying this for all my friends!

5 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at a tortured genius.......2002-08-21

Naxos continues to do a wonderful job with its "Life and Works" series. Quite some time ago, we had a Life/Works of Mozart, one of Chopin and then two more, Liszt and Beethoven. he latter are even better packaged than are the earlier sets, with a thick booklet that offers us essays on the historical background, the position of the composer in his time, a look at the major works, a listening plan, recommended readings, personalities, a calendar of the artist's life, a glossary, and a discography. This booklet is worth the price of the set alone.

Now we have two more entries in this amazing series, again written and narrated by Jeremy Siepmann: "Pyotr Il'yich Tchaikovsky" (8.558036-39) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 5 min. and "Johann Sebastian Bach" (8.558051-54) with a playing time of 4 hrs. 34 minutes. (Please see my comments on the Bach set on its webpage.)

Was there ever a sadder composer than Tchaikovsky? Siepmann practically introduces us to the child in his cradle and covers his 53 or so years of torment over his music, his sexuality, his impossibly hopeless marriage his strange relationship with Mme von Meck, and above all his music.

To make the recording more vivid, the producers have assigned professional actors the roles of the composer himself (Malcolm Sinclair), the women in his life (Karen Archer and Teresa Gallagher) and the men (Stephen Thorne and David Timson). There are many music examples (drawn, of course, from Naxos recordings), some of them considerably longer than necessary. For example, the "Sugar Plum Fairy" is heard at length to represent all of the "Nutcracker" score when several shorter samplings would have served the purpose better. But this has been true for the entire series, and perhaps the producers will rethink this aspect.

All of the songs are great, with highlights being 'Blind', 'Sad Truth', 'Rosabelle' & 'Ruby.' Gurf Morlix's year spent with Lucinda Williams pay off with his gifted production skills on 'American Breakdown.' Buy this, you'll be a better person for it. ;)

5 out of 5 stars top ten cd.......2003-07-27

I just spent the last week listening to
this great cd. it covers a lot of ground
and I've already bought a couple extra for my
friends.

I have enjoyed listening to this wonderful collection. I live in the Memphis area, so I am lucky to get to hear the Memphis Vocal Arts Ensemble often. Kallen truly is a treasure, both with her incredible voice and her friendly manner. This cd shows off her supple voice and is a great addition to anyone's collection.
