Trisha Yearwood is often compared to Linda Ronstadt, and it's easy to understand why when listening to her wide-open country-rock vocal on "Better Your Heart Than Mine," which was co-authored by Andrew Gold, a former member of Ronstadt's band. Yearwood grabs hold of the rocking beat and belts out the melody as if her voice had the buzzing edge and rhythmic clout of an electric guitar. The 29-year-old singer is capable of a lot more, however, and she proves as much on her breakthrough third album. The key number is "I Don't Fall in Love So Easy." Yearwood's ability to stretch a note with a bluesy fall in pitch as if torn between defensiveness and desire is a rare skill. Willie Nelson not only wrote the Mexican-flavored "One in a Row," but he also plays the acoustic guitar solo on it and sings harmony behind her on Kimmie Rhodes' "Hard Promises To Keep." The album falls short of true greatness due to a few questionable song choices but it gives more than a few hints that Yearwood could well be the female country singer who best combines commercial appeal and artistic merit in the '90s. --Geoffrey Himes

5 out of 5 stars An album full of quality ballads.......2005-04-27

I became a fan of Trisha's from the time I played her debut album, which was full of songs that grabbed my attention instantly. This album is not like that at all - it is one of those albums that sounds more impressive each time you play it. This album is dominated by reflective ballads that suit Trisha ideally. If you want to hear Trisha sing more up-tempo material, there isn't much here, although you will enjoy If I ain't got you.

Among the great ballads here, the title track (about how hearing a certain song can bring back memories), Mr Radio (a cover of a song previously recorded by Linda Ronstadt for her 1982 album, Get closer), One in a row (a cover of an old Willie Nelson song), I don't fall in love so easy (a Rodney Crowell song), The nightingale (an excellent original song) and Lying to the moon (a song written and first recorded by Matraca Berg) are particularly noteworthy, but every song here is a gem.

This is a masterpiece from one of the finest country singers of her generation.

5 out of 5 stars One to remember.......2004-06-12

Trisha's third album THE SONG REMEMBERS WHEN finds the singer going for a more contemporary country sound. Her strength has always been ballads, she does well with any material she sinks her teeth into, but on her ballads you really get to feel what she's saying, and it comes from the heart. The title track has to be one of her most memorable songs, a song about love lost and remembering it. She does a good version of her idol Linda Ronstadt's "Mr. Radio", and Rodney Crowell's "I Don't Fall In Love So Easy". Other highlights include "Better Your Heart Than Mine", "One In A Row" and the closing "Lying to The Moon". Only a real singer can deliver the image from the heart of the song. Yearwood here is the heart of the song itself.

5 out of 5 stars Review for Trisha Yearwood.......2002-05-02

I purchased this video a couple of years ago. This VHS tape includes live performances from her first three albums as well as footage of her discussing songs that had meaning to her. If you are a Trisha Yearwood fan then this is a must own!

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Yearwood.......2001-12-05

In looking at Trisha's career over the past ten years, one can be amazed at the variety of material this voice can handle. If you want to hear one of the best examples that, find the "West Side Story" tribute David Pack did a few years ago, and listen to Trisha's wonderful version of "I Had a Love." It will give you shivers!
Just like this album! It's one of our favorite Yearwood collections. From the opening of "The Song Remember When" to the closing "Lying to the Moon," this collection demonstrates why Trisha is the premier female vocalist of country music. Her rendition of Rodney Crowell's "I Don't Fall in Love So Easy" is breathtaking. "Mr. Radio," a tune recorded by Linda Ronstadt, is vocalized in Trisha's trademark style, and although comparisons to the aforementioned Linda have been noted, Trisha is able to make each and every one of her songs her own. "The Nightingale" is beautiful and emotional. "One in a Row" is a clever tune, given much life by Trisha's impassioned vocals.
The sunflowers on the cover enhance this country girl's image, but Trisha, like Gary Morris, transcends the country genre. She is just out and out an outstanding vocalist. No genre excluded!

4 out of 5 stars Nice collection of songs!.......2001-10-18

THE SONG REMEMBERS WHEN is not quite as enjoyable as previous releases, but there are songs that make listening fun. Gosh, the title song is just soooo beautiful! "If I Ain't Got You," "One In A Row" written by Willie Nelson, and the touching Matraca Berg tune, "Lying To The Moon" are also great songs. And then there are the singles... I really found this CD harder to get into than prior releases, though it is a pleasant collection to listen to.

Though American, Barbara Bonney has spent most of her career in Europe and, up until recently, never saw the need to sing in English. But this collection is entirely in English, featuring the title piece written for her by Previn--sort of a tone poem for voice, nice but not great--plus Samuel Barber's more familiar Hermit Songs, Dominick Argento's Six Elizabethan Songs and Aaron Copland's Twelve Poems of Emily Dickinson. It's one of her best recordings and a big step in the gradual evolution of an artist who began as another pretty-voiced soprano and is becoming one of the most memorable recitalists of her generation. --David Patrick Stearns

5 out of 5 stars A soprano must!.......2007-01-08

This collection of songs is very helpful for sopranos--all of you will need to know these pieces at some point!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent album, with some minor quibbles.......2005-08-13

One of my first experiences as an accompanist was to play the Argento Elizabethan songs, and ever since I've had a special affinity for them. That alone was my reason for purchasing this particular disc, and the fact that the Barber Hermit Songs were here was a major bonus!

Bonney does a beautiful job with all the sets presented here, and Previn delivers a perfectly complimentary accompaniment to Bonney's soaring tone.

One thing I found interesting about Bonney was her frequent use of straight tone. I can't verify if she's chosen to do so for interpretive reasons, but there are occasions in all the sets (esp. the Barber and Argento) where I find that it sticks out. In general, her tone is always beautiful, and the lack of vibrancy doesn't affect the pitch or flow of the line. It's a very minor issue, but I feel compelled to mention it for those who may not be expecting this stylistic detail.

At any rate, the repertoire is amazing, and I think this disc is almost essential as the Rubinstein disc I reviewed elsewhere on Amazon. I'm not letting my issue with Bonney's vibrancy take away from the 5-star rating. :)

4 out of 5 stars I like it!.......2002-03-04

I bought this cd a while ago. The reason I bought it is because Barbara Bonney is my favourite artist. I think she sings beautifully in this cd. But for the repetoire, I think it's a litte bit too contemparory for me and I am not really into that. Still, I think she did an excellent job in this recording! It's really worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars International, and yet local.......2001-02-20

Mrs. Bonney, born in America but with several years in Europe is able to give us the best of the two worlds.

The CD is a masterpiece of fantastic singing and with heart and the freedom that Mr. Previn adds to his piano playing.

I bought the CD based in the recommendation of the Gramophone magazine, and again they are right.

Previos review gives a good overall picture of the performance

Buy it!

5 out of 5 stars Bonney Changes Course.......1999-09-13

This recording marks a new high for Bonney. While her silvery tone and lyricism have always been more than suffcient to captivate her listeners, Bonney takes risks on this disc like never before. She has a maturity and depth to her sound that makes one realize that her older recordings were more shallow in retrospect. Not only is she willing to step out of the box so many sopranos fall into: of wanting to sound "pretty" all the time; she is aggressive and surprisingly edgy in her interpretations of the Barber set, shockingly frank in the Argento, and convincingly ominous in the closing Previn vocalise. With this disc, Bonney has truly established herself as a force in vocal music, and as the definitive American singer today.

5 out of 5 stars Trisha Did It Again!.......2001-09-21

THE SONG REMEMBERS WHEN is not only the artistic highlight of Trisha's career, it is one of the best albums to come out of Nashville in years. Yearwood's soaring voice adds much to the success of the album, but the quality of the songs on this collection are so superior that Trisha is well ahead of the game before she even opens her mouth.

The award-winning title track, written by New Yorker Hugh Prestwood, is an emotionally explosive narrative ballad about the power of music. Other songs range from rock ("If I Ain't Got You") to folk ("Hard Promises To Keep"), but most don't stray away from the straight-ahead country-pop style of one of contemporary music's clearest voices. "The Nightingale," one of the most exquisite tracks on the album, shows the artistry of what an accomplished interpreter can create with a strong melody.

You never know what your buying when you purchase an unknown artist, but I was very surprised that I would like the cd so much. I would reccommend it to anyone who is looking for sophisticated and intelligent entertainment.

    4 out of 5 stars A wonderful story teller.......1999-09-22

With regards to the negative review of this album, I must disagree. This lady obviously has excellent taste in music. She sings intelligent lyrics in a way that I know these songs speak to her as well as through her. Her voice is not forced, in fact it gives this album an intimate quality. She is what I would call a wonderful story teller. I have even had the privilege of seeing Deborah perform and she takes you on a journey you don't forget. I'm sorry for her to have received such bad feedback.

2 out of 5 stars This is 'trying to hard'.......1999-09-03

I really feel for Deborah. I know she means well, and here voice is tolerable, it's just that it all sounds a little too forced. The songs are all very similar and sound alike a 'disney afternoon'. I believe her next album could really make a 'sound' if she would 'try' less and just let the songs come to her.

p.s. I do believe that the song 'Lies of Handsome Men' has some good potential, if the melody was stronger (louder)....

    Album Description

It is a compilation of old standards and new standards sung in an intimate style. My approach in recording is to think of myself "singing stories" to a group of people as I do when I sing in a Cabaret Room, or Club.

The music comes from a wide variety of composers, genres, and the approach to each song is either with piano alone, guitar alone or with a small combo and some strings. Very intimate and simple. This is an album to sit and listen to great lyrics or to play for ambiance at a dinner party.
