Zero 7's ability to conjure beautiful lullabies with all the romance of 1960s French pop (as found on their debut LP, Simple Things) would have made them the toast of soundtrack composers and chill-out connoisseurs the world over. Unfortunately, two Frenchmen beat Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker to the title of "masters of comedown cool," leaving the London duo to be forever called "the British Air." And this is fair; the similarities between Zero 7's lush cinematic soundscapes and those of Air's Moon Safari and the Virgin Suicides score are so strong as to sound almost intentional. Nonetheless, their debut is a truly gorgeous album. It has all the tried and tested atmospheric tricks--bleeps and whooshes layered over plodding Fender Rhodes chords, swathes of strings and tender trumpet parps--but it's Binns and Hardaker's languid grooves and the soft melancholy of their melodies that make dream-state instrumentals "Give It Away" and "Polaris" utterly enchanting. The real power of Simple Things, however, is in its songs. As beautiful as the ambient strains are, when laid beneath the seductive vocals of Australian diva Sia on the ethereal "Destiny" or the heart-breaking "Distractions," their potency becomes apparent. --Dan GennoeAlbum Description
2001 debut full length for dance act described as, 'the British Air', the follow-up to two limited, critically acclaimed EPs. Highlights include the awesome African influenced instrumental passage 'Likufanele', the velvety 'I Have Seen' feat. Mozez & the quiet storm of 'Destiny' feat. Sia. Quango.Customer Reviews:

Thanks to good marketing, good cover art, and good luck, this disc probably has sold more copies than most other recordings of Gregorian chant put together. It's often quipped that most of those discs have been listened to exactly once and put away--to the puzzlement of many musicians and critics, who point out that there are more beautiful, more varied performances by professional singers available. Yet the singing of these Spanish Benedictines has a special quality that probably explains this disc's popularity--a reverent serenity that no doubt stems from the fact that the monks are actually praying, not just performing. Granted, Chant can become a bit monotonous with repeated listening, but it really gives you the sense of devotion that has always been the purpose of "Gregorian" chant. If this recording (ahem) enchants you at first, wonderful. If you get bored with it later, don't give up--there has been an extraordinary variety of styles and sounds over the 1,500-year history of plainchant, so go exploring with Anonymous 4, Ensemble Gilles Binchois, Sequentia, or Ensemble Organum. You won't be sorry. --Matthew WestphalCustomer Reviews:

The Complete Piano Music of Scott Joplin.......2007-06-08
Another Performer Rewrites Joplin's Masterpieces.......2007-05-31
Again, to those who believe that concert music is meant to be rewritten by each and every performer I ask, is the same treatment also acceptable for Chopin's and Rachmaninoff's music? Would "Moonlight Sonata" sound better if played at twice the tempo and with a reprise of the first Adagio movement thrown in at the end? Obviously, the answer to these questions is a resounding NO!, so why does one of America's greatest composers get such disrespect?
Interpretation is an integral part of every performance. Adding one's own notes, phrases and chords where none should be is not. Randomly changing the structure of the piece is not. Playing a piece at twice the indicated tempo is not.
One the plus side, the depth of this collection is outstanding. Joplin's lesser known pieces like "Harmony Club Waltz" really shine. The recording is decent in quality, although a bit bassy in places.
While its been stated before, I feel its worth repeating: Buy Joshua Rifkin's performances of Joplin in order to hear how the Master intended his pieces to sound.

The U.K.-based musician, film director, and Faithless cofounder Jamie Catto and producer Duncan Bridgeman coproduced this impressive multimedia CD, which boasts an eclectic array of artists ranging from Senegal's Baaba Maal and New Zealand's Maori artist Whirimako Black to the king of ambient, Brian Eno. This project, the fruit of a six-month, five-continent recording spree, is a funky, folkloric, and futuristic mélange of sampled indigenous instruments and electronica. "Braided Hair" teams the rap-country vocals of Arrested Development's Speech with the daring pop diva Neneh Cherry. The South African mbaqanga vocals of the Mahotella Queens provide the Afro-rave underpinnings for vocalist Ulali's poetic pleas for African unity. The tantric trances of the South Asian syncopated tabla drums pepper the synth-laden "When You Dream," which features R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe and the Indian star Asha Bhosle. Boundaries of nationality, time, and musical genre meld into grooves for the head, hips, and heart that need no translation. --Eugene Holley Jr.Album Description

For All Mankind (And, Uh, Womankind).......2007-04-06
You may remember "My Culture," a hip-hop-n-dream-pop number featuring Robbie Williams and Maxi Jazz. One of the album's first singles, it got a lot of play in 2002-3, and its short form music video was nominated for a Grammy. Rightfully so, as the song is reminiscent of what makes the entire rest of the album so wonderful -- uncannily unique rhythms tied to lyricism and tones that strike chords at the cellular level.
Not a hard thing to do when you dipping your ladle into the slow-moving streams of tribal music, unsullied Indian chants, and the traditional prayer-songs of people with more than a little of their life tied inextricably to the past that made them. Songs like "Ma' Africa," "Passion," and "Braided Hair" postively glow with the energy and emotion behind the words. Others, like "The Way You Dream" and "Daphne" and "All Alone" float dreamily through their own notes, aloft on the not-so-hidden hope of the record's message.
Some might find it heavy-handed or cliched (the DVD runs a bit long), but there's really no denying that the music is, in fact, beautiful. Assisted musically (and with some vocal contributions by) people such as Brian Eno, Michael Franti, Michael Stipe, Kurt Vonnegut, Dennis Hopper, Baaba Maal and others, the record does court themes that may seem old news, but I'd argue that just because a message is old doesn't make it any less true, doesn't deprive of it of any of the power and honesty that compelled it when it was fresh and alive. Although this album is over five years old by now, and although the spirit that prompted it is even older, "fresh" and "alive" are still perfect words to describe every song in it.
Just a couple of good songs.......2007-03-03

World music for the Contemporary world.......2006-03-07
Most people will have heard 'My Culture' which features vocal/rap from Robbie Williams, but this is certainly not the best track. I'd say the weak point for me is 'Braided Hair', which i find the most repetitive and simplistic. That said, one of my best friend adores it.
Personal Favourites are:
'Ma' Africa' - an uplifting track with a clear tribal feel, and lyrics which seek to "make Africa a land of hope"
"The Way you dream" - Truly epic, truly gorgeous, blending the western with the indian and back to the western with Michael Stipe. A selfless song.
"Ghosts" - A ghostly sound, with strings, building in intensity. Absolutely hauntingly beautiful.

Koop combines a wealth of summery melodies and floating vocals with the acid jazz of Gilles Peterson and the laid-back trip-hop aesthetic of Jazzanova and Peter Kruder. The result is a sweet, effortless sound on Waltz For Koop. Starting off with a Brazilian feel, Koop enlists Astrud Gilberto-like chanteuses Cecilia Stalin and Yukimi Nagano to augment the mood, while later, electronic trickster-legend Earl Zinger shows up for a decadent "Modal Mile." The record takes an otherworldly turn with the presence of Chicago folk-jazz artist Terry Callier, as his wistful, spiritual pipes give "In a Heartbeat" a depth that eludes most DJs, who go for electronic lounge and end up with elevator music. Good-natured and accessible without being trendy, Waltz puts a lot of other "chill" collections to shame. --Matthew CookeAlbum Description
Koop comes from a universe where Miles Davis never made Bitches Brew, replacing swing with funk, and instead double basses kept walking and jazz kept swinging all the way until the sampler arrived to chop it up. Not electronic music with a touch of jazz, but jazz sparingly laced with electronics. Magnus Zingmark and Oscar Simonsson, both from Sweden's main university-town Uppsala, now residing in Stockholm, were the first two jazzheads in their hometown to lose interest in the perpetual Hammond organ-licking of Jimmy Smith. Instead, they embarked together down the more rewarding paths of Hard-bop and raw Latin beats, avoiding fusion's tendency to dilute the original spirit of jazz. This is not your everyday downtempo/lounge CD. No way !
This is your special ocassion CD !!! This is a journey that begins with beautiful Jazz (including latin-jazz) touched by smooth electronics. It then takes a soft turn into folky-bluessy-housy music (hard to tell), to finally end with some great downtempo tracks. I should mention that all of this happens while you enjoy silky beautiful vocals and groovy bass lines. This is really good music. NU-JAZZ at its best (and at its sexiest too).
Groovy, classy, sexy... Just right.

Album Description
Outside Austin, Texas, a 53-year-old man sleeps to the melody of four radios, three televisions, two amps, a radio scanner, and a Casio keyboard, all screeching at the same time. Loudly. He has three teeth and his hair is matted into one huge dreadlock. This is the story of Roky Erickson: manic frontman for the legendary band The 13th Floor Elevators, creators of psychedelic music and muse to Janis Joplin. Known for his colossal heroin & LSD binges, struggles with schizophrenia, and an unthinkable term at Rusk Hospital for the Criminally Insane, Roky went missing from the world.
YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME is a disturbingly intimate portrait of an imploding family and the struggle between modernized medicine and religion and reveals the shocking & triumphant truth behind one of Rock's great mysteries.
YOU'RE GONNA MISS ME features classic songs from the 13th Floor Elevators, Roky Erickson and the Aliens, and gripping solo acoustic performances from Roky, available exclusively on this soundtrack.

This set contains the two CDs that, it must be acknowledged, just about started the Chant craze in 1994. The music was actually recorded in the 1970s and 1980s (this new set has been remastered and sounds better than the 1994-95 releases did) and was on sale in Spain and offered at the Monastery of Santo Domingo de Silos for some time before it became "hot." Since then, hundreds of CDs of chant and similar music have appeared, many more polished then these, but perhaps these were so special because they weren't performances: they caught actual Monks in the act of praying, and the meditative quality is undeniably real. Whatever the case, this is music for reflection, calming down, re-fueling and getting away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life--which may be even more needed now than they were 10 years ago. Texts are not supplied and you won't need them; it's all about reverence and mood. Doing nothing but listening to this in 25-minute chunks will allow your breathing to slow and re-energize you. Each 55-minute CD will probably put you to sleep--and this isn't meant as a criticism. --Robert LevineCustomer Reviews:

I would highly recommend this recording to anyone.

FANTASTIC!!.......2006-01-25
However, this complaint aside, I love the Anniversary Edition. Although the track sequence is different from the original Chant CD and I find myself expecting certain chants to follow others, I will in time get used to the differences.
Moving on, this is not complicated material. There is no polyphonic, raucous, symphonic accompaniment. There are no rowdy, raging guitar riffs from the likes of Pepper Keenan or Jeff Loomis. There are no ultra-funky looped drum beats, booming bass, or rapped socio-political venom from the likes of the Ice Cube or Public Enemy. There is neither a Cecilia Bartoli nor a BB King to sustain things by sheer virtuosity. There are only the exquisitely simple, melodic sounds of monks singing/chanting in Latin in a great, grand hall with nary a trace of echo to be heard. This is gorgeous, sublime, invigorating music to soothe the sores of the soul and heal the hardened heart. The raw honesty and utter conviction of the `performers' on these two discs drive these pieces home with a power that more practiced and polished performers dare not dream of. Even with no transcription or translation of the chants inside the booklet, this is music to be enjoyed by everyone.
My recommendation is to procure Chant: The Anniversary Edition immediately and be thankful that such simple and supremely powerful music exists to bring some light into our seemingly ever-darkening world.
Thanks for reading.

It's reported that Supreme Beings of Leisure emerged when a rap group called Oversoul 7 added a singer named Geri Soriano-Lightwood. Yet the band's laid-back dance grooves sound all of a piece, as if they'd played together for years. There's no messy merging of disparate styles, no rude sound shifts that occur when young bands search for their sound. Instead, this is a professionally buffed production. Though the three instrumental members all share programming duties and the music is certainly heightened by a liberal use of special space-age effects, the music is far more rooted in traditional soul-ballad and pop-rock writing than apparent on first listen. Tracks such as "Golddigger" and "Strangelove Addiction" borrow their hooks from the pop-rock dictionary, no matter how futuristic the desires. It might be another case of style over substance. Or maybe the band needs to transcend their professionalism and really get down to some scary stuff. --Rob O'ConnorCustomer Reviews:

Live-in-studio performances are a radio staple in big cities coast-to-coast, but no one does it with the clout of Los Angeles station KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic program and its influential host Nic Harcourt. The most recent compilation of diverse recordings--without dubs or production tricks--will appeal to fans of any of the 13 artists and to those looking to inflate their music perspectives. The curtain opens with the Polyphonic Spree's crescendo-building pop symphony spiritual "It's the Sun," which quiets, then meshes into the Flaming Lips' bare-bones reading of "Yoshimi Battles the Pink Robots, Pt. 1." Damien Rice, Paul Weller and Radiohead all pull the plug on restrained, yet uniquely commanding performances before "eclectic" earns its title on My Morning Jacket's blistering full-band rocker "One Big Holiday." After Interpol and Franz Ferdinand make stalwart contributions, Sarah McLachlan, accompanied only by a piano, recites in hushed tones why she is the "Answer," before a solo Steve Earle takes the listener on a journey to "Jerusalem." The poignant presentation by the rabble-rousing troubadour serves as an optimistic closer to another successful anthology. --Scott HolterCustomer Reviews:
sounds almoust eclectic.......2005-09-06
There's this sort of line to follow, despite the bands are real eclectic, within each other, the live presentations have similitudes, so maybe theres a louder or heavy act left.
The good thing here is the selection of groups and the production by the host of the show. Nice quality sound, good masterization, and a better selection of songs, untitled from Interpol, one big holiday from my morning jacket and the BD from Demian Rice are the best
As a conclusion the price is real worth the record and the effort of the public radio internatinal broadcast, and it is better if is purchased by amazon, speccially if you are over seas

NOT for people who like their music mass-marketed.......2005-04-13
This album features a variety of different musicians (hence the name eclectic), from The Flaming Lips to Franz Ferdinand.
Morning Becomes Eclectic, the radio show from which the live recordings were taken, has a fresh feel that contrasts with the canned, advertisement driven attitude of most other "popular" radio stations. This CD captures that feeling well, and makes transitions from one music genre to another without alienating the listener.
Why four stars, you ask? Eclectic-based music usually has at least one song that you won't like....

Sublime.......2006-03-14
What John Williams lacks in lyricism is easily compensated for by Bream and the result is outstanding.
Their chemistry is so amazing and the pieces come to life in such a cohesive way that I sometimes think it is one person with 10 fingers on each hand playing the pieces.
Not every piece is easily accessible, so give it time.
Highly recommended.
An excellent CD for anyone who loves the classical guitar.......2000-06-12
The main problem of playing a classical guitar is the genuine lack of material, apart from those (relatively few) pieces which were originally written for the guitar. Furthermore, being a fairly limited instrument, the guitar limits severely the possibilities of adapting various classical pieces which were not written originally for the guitar. Thus, Bream & Williams, set out on a mission - to achieve what is not possible on one guitar, by playing a duet of classical guitars. Hence, almost all the compositions here are adaptations, but this is by no means a bad thing - the arrangements very cleverly hides the limits of the instruments, while emphasizing it's intimate and warm nature.
Two of the most notable of these adaptations are "Evocacion", from Albeniz "Suite Iberia" and "Bajo la palmera" from "Cantos de Espana", both of which were written for piano. It is well worth mentioning that many of Albeniz compositions were based on traditional spanish tunes, played originally on guitars. Thus, by playing these truly great pieces on classical guitars, Bream & Williams are restoring some of the magic which allured Albeniz to these tunes in the first place. One might also feel these tunes sound actually more natural played on two guitars rather than on a piano.
Other interesting adaptations are the three pieces by Debussy, which are very melodic and are very suitable to be played on guitars.
I warmly recommend this excellent album for anyone who appreciates classical music played by very able musicians. I guess it's also ideal as a gift for those who like good music which isn't classical, and are interested in exploring new grounds, as this album is very communicative, although it hasn't lost any of it's integrity.
