A beautifully full, sweetly melodic pop album that is so lush with sound, it takes a few listens to realize that, remarkably, all the songs are performed with only acoustic instruments. Rhythm guitars provide a thick mattress on which the rest of the elements gently bounce. No single note rises above another. The well-harmonized vocals blend perfectly with the rest of the instruments. The lyrics are fanciful plays on words, but they're sung so earnestly that one still finds relevance and meaning in them. "Obscurity Knocks" and "Only Tongue Can Tell" are the best examples of cleverly skewed lyrics supported by elegant melodies. Overall, Cakeis a wonderful acoustic accomplishment. --Beth Bessmer

5 out of 5 stars Perfect.......2006-04-24

I've been listening to this album for fifteen years, and I can't believe I'm actually going to say this, but...it just gets better and better. I never get tired of CAKE. The lyrics and melodies are unmatched. Each song is a gem of unrivaled cleverness and tenderness. What a stunning confluence of sweetness and wit. It gives me something on every listen.

So many albums feel haphazardly slapped together--this one doesn't. It is finely crafted. And so many albums feel like they are about 4 songs too many--this one isn't. CAKE actually feels like it could keep right on going on its own.

I will spare you the details so you can discover them yourself. So I'm gonna keep it short and simple: I don't know what I'd do without this one album in my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Great brit-pop with clever lyrics.......2005-04-21

I'm writing this review 15 years late, but I had to comment on it. CAKE was one of my favorite CDs of the 90's, and I still can't get enough of it today.

The lyrics make this album really stand out. The play on words is so clever ("Just fair-weather words from four-letter friends" or "You made me feel I was born again, it's a shame I never grew up again") each song has at least one great line.

"Obscurity Knocks" is my favorite off the CD. A perfect pop song. Since the CD came out when I was turning 21, the song became an anthem for me (not really, but that sounds good).

Other outstanding tracks include "Only Tongue Can Tell", "You Made Me Feel", "Funny", "Thrupenny Tears", and "January's Little Joke".

I finally was able to catch TCS in concert, twice in the past year and a half in Austin at SXSW. Although I only got see a small portion of their regular show, they were very solid. I noticed that they didn't play anything off this CD, which was frustrating. If you have the chance to see them live, do so.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2004-08-19

Another one of those CDs that sounds as good today as it did 14 years ago.

TCS are probably a bit arty for many, but they have a very devoted following. They are very talented musicians, I remember way back when during a live show, they would occasionally swap instruments between songs. Very cool.

That being said, "Cake" still makes it to my main playlist. Francis Reader's vocals twist in and out of the numerous plays on words. John Douglas is a superb guitarist.

The standout tracks are the singles "Only Tongue Can Tell" and my favorite "Obscurity Knocks". "Circling the Circumference", another single, is good too but not as punchy as the other two. A great slow track is "Even the Odd".

A sublime CD overall, prolly rated 4.5 stars.

3 out of 5 stars A cake that's sparkling with colors.......2004-06-09

'Cake' by The Trash Can Sinatras falls somewhere in between The Sundays' dreamy guitar textures and the playful romps of The Housemartins. Throw in Johnny Marr's fluid jangles and minstrel-like vocals of Roddy Frame, and you have a debut combines melodic/acoustic-derived Britpop with The Smiths. Joyous and sparkling. Not a bad combination. Let The Trash Can Sinatras take you on a leisurely stroll where the sun is shining, the grass is green, and everything is alright.

4 out of 5 stars Far from "Trash"........2004-01-20

I don't know a single other person who knows this band, but I sure am glad I do. This is one of those special albums that came out at a great time in alt-pop. They sound alot like other bands from that era (1990), but also add a very smooth and melodic touch to their music, almost shoegazeish, but not. The best tracks in my opinion are "Obscurity Knocks", "Even The Odd", "Funny", and "Only Tongue Can Tell". All wonderful. If you like bands such as "The Ocean Blue" or "Mighty Lemon Drops", you should like this album. It might be the best "Cake" you ever had.

5 out of 5 stars Integrity and Genius.......2006-08-07

When I bought Cake, I felt that Trash Can Sinatras had created one of the most stunning albums of all time. I wasn't as impressed with I've Seen Everything when I first listened to it. As the years went by, I kept coming back to it to realize that indeed, there were great songs. I still have a stronger feeling for Cake but I've Seen Everything is a wonderful progression that proves these guys write the most brilliant lyrics time after time and best of all, they never followed any path to commercialism. That's probably why the record executive dopes dropped them when they didn't produce hits. For people that understand truly good music, Trash Can Sinatras are at the top of the list. They write from the heart and that's what makes ALL their music some of the best ever created.

5 out of 5 stars Never a Dull Moment..........2006-04-27

I've enjoyed I'VE SEEN EVERYTHING since it came out in '93, but it didn't knock me over like CAKE did when I first heard it. But no more--I've been hit. Over the past few years I've found that I'VE SEEN EVERYTHING has pulled even with--if not surpassed--CAKE in its brilliance.

In fact, this is one of the least boring albums I've ever heard. Though it feels less like an album than CAKE, it is far more interesting song to song. "Hayfever" and "Send for Henny" are gems. But I've found the greatest satisfaction from the quiet tunes of "Earlies" and "Orange Fell." And there's simply no song in their entire arsenal that matches the pure rock potency and bravado of "One at a Time."

Regardless of ranking, the Trashcans stand in the forefront of a very small field of artists who can deliver a one-two-punch like CAKE and I'VE SEEN EVERYTHING. In the end, I'VE SEEN EVERYTHING is more complicated than CAKE but it just may be more rewarding.

5 out of 5 stars Intimate Trashcan Sinatra Experience.......2004-12-28

The TCS first album Cake has my favorite song of all time, "Obscurity Knocks," but I've Seen Everything is a superior album (not to knock Cake, a lovely masterpiece by its own right) because the sound has a more intimate, acoustic feel. Also, like Cake, there is not one weak song so that you have close to a full hour of bliss. If you love the achingly melancholy, slower-paced songs like "Send for Henny," "My Mistake," "White Horses," and "Orange Fell," you might want to check out band The Clientele. All of their albums are good and like the best of TCS, evoke innocence, nostalgia, and beautiful sadness. Especially check out their slow, aching songs, "Reflections After Jane," and "Bicycles."

5 out of 5 stars Way More Polished than Cake.......2004-12-19

While Cake remains high on my playlist, this is really a much more sophisticated CD. The rough edges are gone and TCS seem way more polished here.

TCS are definitely the best known of a group of bands (The Bible, Mexico 70, The Railway Children, Liberty Horses) that I would say are very similiar. All produced CDs that are rich, mellow and age well.

That being said, this CD merits a listen without the proverbial skip button. My favorite tracks are "Easy Read", "Hayfever", "Send for Henny" and "Earlies".

It's tough to rate TCS CDs, best to just get them all.

4 out of 5 stars Rich & Creamy!.......2004-05-29

The first time I heard this band I thought they sounded a bit bland but this CD has grown on me. TCS is a fine Scottish band with a rich, emotive style that's truly cathartic. The melodies are superb and they are matched with equally delightful lyrics (lots of coy wordplay). They remind me of Prefab Sprout by way of the Proclaimers. This was a solid debut album, though they didn't really hit their stride until "A Happy Pocket," their third, hard-to-find in the U.S. album.

On Weightlifting, their fourth album, Scotland's Trashcan Sinatras tackle love, loss, and personal triumph with beauty and maturity--no easy feat in a culture teeming with cynical alt-rockers. This is a record founded on earnestness and sky-parting melodies, as the driving, anthemic "Welcome Back" makes clear: it's a song of survival from a quintet that has fought tenaciously to sustain a career while keeping its quaint musical ethos intact. Weightlifting may not be the group's masterpiece--that would be its previous album, 1996's A Happy Pocket--but this is far and away the Sinatras' most accessible album, their most carefully crafted, their prettiest. Indeed, crooner Francis Reader and company seem most at home in quieter tunes like "Leave Me Alone," "Usually," and "Weightlifting," knee deep in delicate textures, lush harmonies, and nuanced phrases. With strings and occasional horn parts, the Sinatras harken to music of bygone eras without a trace of kitsch or irony, never losing sight of the importance, in rock music, of catchy grooves and searing guitars. --Michael Mikesell

5 out of 5 stars understated, rediscovered, reappreciated and brilliant for it.......2006-07-25

I bought this album on the strength of the reviews and the not forgotten pleasure of listening to them some eight years ago. The first track i heard was the title track and it seemed a little too immediate in its' pleasures; a little too polished. Where was the TCS sound of old? However, after the nth listen the rest of the album began to reveal its' understated, nuanced brilliance and the unmistakable sound of TCS came cascading down like a sun shower. I keep revisiting and reappreciating this album. To me that's the hallmark of a great album. While comparisons with the Smiths hold water TCS stand firmly on their own ground. The older you get the harder it is to appreciate a new release. I'm seeing them live in a week...too good!!!

4 out of 5 stars Nice........2006-06-18

I really haven't listened to anything else by TCS, so I can't compare this cd to their earlier stuff, but I really like Weightlifting. If only all pop sounded this good, maybe the genre could redeem itself. My favorite songs are "Got Carried Away" and "Leave Me Alone." The best thing about TCS are Francis Reader's vocals. I can think of only a handful of bands today that have lead singers with as good of a voice as he has. I reccomend buying this cd if you enjoy mellow pop.

5 out of 5 stars Quintessential Pop.......2006-01-12

If you have never heard the Trash Can Sinatras you have never really heard pop music - as it could be. Frank Reader's sweet voice traversing the cascading chords of melody drenched guitar compositions is a true joy to behold. Every TCS album is a gem - packed with not just lovely tunes but literate and witty lyrics. Weightlifting continues the tradition. Witness here the merit of quality far outpacing quantity. Not even the Scots west coast delta blues could put a damper on the good feeling these lads deliver.

4 out of 5 stars Nice.......2006-01-08

I saw the video of "It's A Miracle" at www.video.google.com and found it to be a catchy one indeed!

5 out of 5 stars wha?!!!!!!....where was I?!!!!!.......2005-10-21

I'd virtually written this band off after Cake came out. And now this.
What a fantastic recording! The music is best described as lush. Whether fast or slow, it's lush.

The band has grown and only added to it's already strong songwriting skills. The instruments come and go throughout the songs, the vocal melodies are distinct, memorable, and strong, harmonies soar, and the production is alive, warm, and vital to the overall sound. The vocals, at times sound like they're whispered and at other times they're just plain strong. The tunes bring in string sections, vibes, wah-wah'd guitar, numerous percussion, and some other kitchen sink instruments. But it's definitely a guitar album. The uptempo songs are uptempo, the ballads sound like ballads. There is no guessing as to what's what.

If you like really good, solid Brit Pop, this is a great place to end up. It has essences of the Smiths, Travis, Echo and the Bunnymen, Stone Roses, and a few others without sounding like imitators. They are definitely their own men.

I'm having a very hard time writing this review because it really comes off as a fan letter, which it's not.

Some favorites include, "Freetime", "All the Dark Horses" (check out the almost Hawaiian/mandolin-like guitar work at the end), and the opener "Welcome Back", with it's fitting title and great guitar work.

Walk, jog, run or whatever you need to do to get ahold of this, but for God's sake, if you love Brit Pop (okay, they're Scottish, I apologize)just get this!

4 out of 5 stars More weight, less lift.......2006-06-14

I'm biased. I think this is about the best band I've ever heard or seen. And they could have put anything out after an 8 year hiatus and I would have been applauding. Folks, this is a really really good album, from a band that has been absent far too long.

WEIGHTLIFTING has great songs and a great collective sound that can only be described as Trashcan Sinatras. Their guitar and vocal layering are immaculate and textured, and even more confident and refined.

However, here's the rub: it ain't quite like the old stuff. Now before I get to sounding too trite, let me explain why. I miss the old lyrics. Songs from their previous 3 albums were littered with precious word gems. The Trashcans had no equals when it came to turning a phrase, finding both the comedy and the tragedy in a single line from a song. You can't listen to "Obscurity Knocks" or "Hayfever" or "Twisted and Bent" or "The Best Man's Fall" or "The Safecracker" or virtually any other song of theirs without being knocked out by the genius of their lyrics. I am still knocked out by their wit and wisdom as songwriters.

WEIGHTLIFTING has wonderful melodies and very emotional songs, but it just isn't poetry. And maybe that's okay. It's a more grown up album from a band that has taken some knocks and has aged. I can still listen to WEIGHTLIFTING over and over and enjoy songs like "A Coda" or "All the Dark Horses", I just don't get much more out of them on repeated listens. The cleverness and the depth is gone. And I have always considered that one of their trademarks.

Nevertheless, the album is still brilliant in terms of sheer musicality. They truly have come into their own as a band and as musicians. The DVD shows us just how intricately they weave their instruments and their voices. It's amazing how they can make so many instruments and voices seem so effortless and uncluttered.

Welcome Back, indeed!

4 out of 5 stars I'm Just Mad I Didn't Hear About Them Sooner.......2005-08-12

They've been around since they early 90s and I just recently heard about them. It's amazing how little recognition they've gotten. I saw them in concert and I totally fell in love with their soothing, earnest, and melodic style. This album is a good contender for best album of 2004 in my opinion.

"Welcome Back", although a good song, really doesn't belong on this album. They definitely aren't rockers, they're troubadours. "Got Carried Away" is definitely more representative of their emotional and intimate music. Francis Reader's tenor voice and smooth singing really amplify the messages in these songs. It's important to take a close listen to these songs and notice the layered melodies and vocals. It's definitely one of their strong points. "What Women Do To Men" is an absolute jaw-dropper. I can't recall a more chilling and beautiful tribute to women. "It's a Miracle" is a bouncy pop tune with an absolutely chilling chorus. The title track really reinforces the newfound sincere and overall positive leanings of the group.

The included DVD has little material but is a nice bonus. Hearing the albums is nothing compared to seeing them in person.

4 out of 5 stars welcome back, indeed........2005-07-23

i, like most people to review this album, fell in love with the sinatras back in the early 90s. tracks like 'obscurity knocks,' and 'only tongue could tell,' 'best man's fall' (my personal favorite), and 'hayfever' were little nuggets of pop perfection, and perhaps an unintentional reaction to baggy madchester beats (which i love) and the growing 'grunge' (i hate that word) movement.

the sinatras primary strength lays with vocalist francis reader, owner of one of the finest set of pipes you'll ever hear. after recently seeing them live, a friend of mine was amazed by his vocal clarity. he was certain his voice was the result of studio trickery. not so. as with their former albums, the musicianship is top notch. the sinatras never had to muscle their way into a song; each track was a revelation of shimmery guitars, stready beats, walking bass lines and sparkling vocals; all of which are in abundant supply on 'weighlifting.' some standout tracks include 'got carried away' with it's clever lyric, "is that a knock on early grave;" the bouncy 'freetime' and 'it's a miracle;' 'country air' and the title track, 'weightlifting,' which has nothing to do with free weights or exercise machines.

one minor quibble with 'weightlifting' is the relative sameness of a lot of the tracks; but if a bands going to mine and cultivate a sound, they could do much, much worse. the sinatras have fallen a rung or two lyrically. what made 'cake' so incredible and enjoyable (aside from the flawless melodies and musicianship) were they lyrics, especially 'obscurity knocks.' reader's clever wordplay, insight, and obversations would've made oscar wilde green with envy.

the sinatras won't necessarily challenge you, but i don't think that's the point. in an age where 'critics' laud those who 'push the envelope,' sometimes it's just nice to get lost in a beautiful song--and that's what the sinatras do best.

5 out of 5 stars Still the Best.......2005-02-09

I've been listening to these guys religiously since 1990 because they are just the best, and this album re-instates them as The Little Scottish Band That Could... The Trashcans create a lush landscape of soothing sounds on each carefully crafted song here. It's almost as if each song breezes in through the front door, stays for a cup of tea, and leaves you with a different piece to the puzzle of life, love, loss, pain, and renewal. After a few listens you will welcome them back often. Frank Reader has one of the more brilliant voices in all of popdom; Paul Livingston has the jangled guitar sound under his careful control, and John and Stephen Douglas and Davey Hughes keep a rhythm going that plays smart rather than playing hard. Everything fits together just right and the bonus DVD is great as well.

The Trashcan Sinatras easily outshine the likes of Doves, Coldplay, Travis, Belle & Sebastian, and Embrace at their finer moments, and fans of those bands would surely do best to order 2 COPIES of Weightlifting, so that an extra is readily available in case of emergency.

5 out of 5 stars Pop Perfection!.......2005-02-03

These days it seems like the whole world is looking for something meaningful in pop music. Unfortunately everyone tends to overlook the Trash Can Sinatras. Here they are in all their splendid glory. A shining example of perfection, complete with shimmering guitars, beautiful melodies, and perfect harmonies. It's amazing what can be done with guitars, bass, vocals, and drums. Alternative rock fans continue to buy Morrissey records or records of newer bands in a search for a fleeting glimpse of nostalgia and melancholy. Why do they do this when there's something much more tangible and much more honest in the music of the Trash Can Sinatras. This music harks to the beauty and innocence of the past generations. They are steadfast in continuing in the long tradition of Scottish bands who have been extremely influential but often overlooked (except for Franz Ferdinand). In case you need to be reminded here is a list of Scottish bands,The Jesus and Mary Chain, Teenage Fanclub, Travis, Belle and Sebastian, Primal Scream, Cocteau Twins, and Franz Ferdinand.

    5 out of 5 stars TCS's Cake is a must have.......2003-02-07

One evening in 1990, I was lying in bed, very late at night, staring at the ceiling trying to fall asleep. I turned on the radio as I often did late at night, and heard the TCS's for the first time. They were playing an acoustic set at the local radio station in S.F. promoting their new album, CAKE. I heard them strum their way through "only tounge can tell" and "ciculing the circumfrance," and I immediately fell in love with their unique sound, melodic music, and downright brillant lyrics. After buying the album, I found that every track was equally fantastic. Definately one of the most under rated bands around. They are poetic, witty, melodic, and fun all at the same time. Neither their music nor lyrics tire, no matter how many times heard. Definately a must have album.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Underrated Band.......2002-10-29

If you haven't heard "Cake" by the Trash Can Sinatras, you don't know what you're missing. Melodic, Rocking, Beautiful, Mysterious, "In Your Face" lyrics. Brit pop before there was "Brit pop". These boys are one of the most overlooked bands. So many bands have ripped them off. You should buy Cake as a starter and move on to their later works. Hear them progress and hear songs that others are just now imitating. The most witty lyrics ever.

5 out of 5 stars A Crown Jewel of Any Collection.......2000-05-05

I first heard OBSCURITY KNOCKS on 120 minutes in 1990. I purchase the cd there after and have continued to keep it in my listening rotation. This album is timeless. Again and again, I am amazed at the lyrical genius behind the songs. The rich poetry will keep you in a reverie long after the cd ends. As for the music itself, it can be quiet and moody or up-beat and lively. If you have never heard of TCS, get this album by any means possible. The extra tracks are worth it, but the album is still excellent without them. And when you see how addicted you become to it, go get the others (I've Seen Everything and A Happy Pocket) too. This is a "must have" album.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2000-04-24

This is THE must have TCS cd! The opening track, "Obscurity Knocks," is perhaps the best single in my entire CD collection. The songwriting is brilliant from the first track to the last. If you already have the original Cake CD, the extra tracks are worth adding this one to your collection. Then spread the word about TCS by loaning your original "Cake" to a friend who hasn't heard of them - guaranteed you'll have won over a new fan!

5 out of 5 stars Trash Can CD (children's entertainment).......2007-01-10

Totally delightful in all aspects! Great lyrics that children will memorize easily and sing along with. The mood of this CD is fun, fun, fun and relates well to all children young and old. Up with music and creativity! This CD nourishes and uplifts the child in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars Trash Can by Eric Ode.......2002-02-11

Surprise, surprise! A kids album that my six year old wants to hear over and over, and that does not drive me crazy. There is a variety of music with good themes, which as a protective parent I appreciate. The last song, Blackberry Jam will get the whole house moving, even my super cool 15 year old.
