Argentina-born, California-based Gustavo Santaolalla helped shape the rock en Español movement by producing Mexican bands Molotov and Café Tacuba , and Colombian singer Juanes. In the late 1990s he made a switch to soundtracks, working on well-received albums for Amores Perros and The Motorcycle Diaries. His instrumental contributions to Ang Lee's tale of two cowboys in love are acoustic guitar-based and, let's face it, a bit on the sonic-wallpaper side. The vocal tracks, on the other hand, are uniformly lovely, even if the selection of interpreters falls on the predictable side. Linda Ronstadt, Steve Earle, Willie Nelson, and Mary McBride on the soundtrack to a contemporary Western? What a shock! Still, they're all wonderful and Santaolalla wrote at least a couple of classic-sounding country ballads ("A Love That Will Never Grow Old," sung by Emmylou Harris, and "No One's Gonna Love You Like Me," sung by Mary McBride). And don't miss Teddy Thompson and Rufus Wainwright's sweet cover of Roger Miller's 1964 "King of the Road." --Elisabeth Vincentelli

Comedy gets no respect. If Merle Haggard sums up the dilemma of the American working class from the hard-bitten perspective of "Mama Tried" or "The Bottle Let Me Down," he's called a blue-collar poet. If Roger Miller captures the same predicament from the warped, comic perspective of "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd," he's dismissed as a novelty writer. And yet, a great comic song is just as hard to write as a serious one and sheds just as much light on its subject. Nashville has been home to some gifted comic songwriters over the years--Tom T. Hall, Shel Silverstein, John Prine, and so on--but Miller was the best of the bunch and, as such, one of the best songwriters country music has ever known. He's finally getting some overdue respect with the release of a three-CD anthology, King of the Road: The Genius of Roger Miller. Almost everyone is aware of "King of the Road," the shining pinnacle of Miller's career and one of the most perfect country songs ever written. Many of us remember his brief moment in the sun in 1964-66, when he not only dominated the country charts but also put 10 songs in the pop top-40--including such top-10 hits as "Dang Me," "Chug-a-Lug," "King of the Road," "Engine Engine #9," and "England Swings." Exuberant, infectious comic classics one and all, but The Genius of Roger Miller reveals there was a lot more to this quirky artist than that. --Geoffrey HimesCustomer Reviews:
One disc too long.......2007-02-11
HIGHS:
Besides de rigeur classics "King of the Road" and alcohol anthem "Chug-a-Lug", there's the inspired insanity of "You Can't Roller Skate in a Buffalo Herd", "Do Wacka Do", and "England Swings". Lest you believe Miller only capable of playing the jester, check out the deep heartbreak of "One Dyin' and a Buryin'" and "Husbands and Wives".
LOWS:
Disc 3 has a lot of cover songs and Miller isn't at his best doing other people's stuff. Not to say there aren't some great ones scattered in there, such as tender holiday offering "Little Toy Trains" or the everyday man philosophy expressed in "Where Have all the Average People Gone?" or lament "Hoppy's Gone". But the last disc is decidedly the weakest of the trio.
BOTTOM LINE:
Trimming this down to 2 CDs and packing them to the brim and adding in some of the missing Smash material others are complaining about (since the strongest material on here comes from 1964-1969) would probably serve Miller a bit better. This is still the best overview out there because even the better single CDs are missing some great material but I think 2 CDs would do the job adequately.

Outstanding Collection.......2007-01-30
Dad liked it, so it must be good........2007-01-11
Doo Wacka-Doo Wacka-Doo.......2006-11-21
Roger Miller spoiled me though . . . after hearing his songs and recordings and performances, very little of "today's country" (or of any other genre for that metter) measures up. Roger raised the bar so high that most others simply pass by beneath his talent and abilities.
Roger could make you laugh out loud . . . or cry . . . and sometime BOTH in the same song . . . he could enteratain but he was also a "humorist philospher" who's songs and lyrics and even 'aside remarks' could bring you down off your lofty ivory tower pedestal and make you realize our common humanity.
Roger sang of everyday lives and everyday events and everyday experiences in a not so everyday way of looking at them. He viewed the world and experiences and life from such a unique "eye" and perspective . . . and he knew how to laugh at the ridiculous found even in the most somber and even sad experiences met with through living.
Reading the liner notes to this collection it is so amazing to learn that many of these tracks might have been lost forever. Someone cleaning out the garage of a house they bought discovered these tins in a box there ready to be discarded as trash: they were "Master Tapes" of Roger's recordings. And so some of the tracks we get to hear and enjoy now on this collection were salvaged and saved and now preserved digitally for all time. Thank God for miraculous saves! :)
If you are a fan of roger Miller . . . if You perhaps only recently heard of Roger Miller . . .and even if you never before heard of Roger Miller, get this collection. You will meet and encounter the most interesting and creative singer/songwriter you will ever meet. And you will enjoy track after track after track of creative genius. You will laugh for sure . . . you will cry for certain . . . and you will thank yourself forever for taking advantage of the opportunity these recordings provide you to know "the genius of Roger Miller"
And thank YOU Roger Miller for all the great music and song . . . and for your most unique gift of humor. You are greatly missed.
The best Roger Miller collection available.......2006-10-16
It starts in 1957 with hard-country songs that Hank Snow might have recorded. It ends in 1986 with 2 tracks from his crowning achievement, the Broadway hit Big River. The mid-sixties were his finest years and many of his most memorable hits are to be found on disc 2. But it's all good.
Go for The All Time Greatest Hits album if you are sampling. Chances are you'll want to trade it in for this one.

Cars, motorcycles, vans, choppers, and bongs--it's easy to see where Fu Manchu find their inspiration, and it's clear this isn't cerebral rock. These boys, who hail from the synapse-frying heat of the California desert, go for the gut. They have the riffage to do it, sounding part Stooges circa Metallic K.O., part Black Sabbath, part stoned teenage garage band. Singer Scott Hill shrieks like a psychopathic Ted Nugent and his guitar emits fuzzed-out, grooved-up slabs of thunder--with lightning. The drums and bass are heavy but never fast; when they crank up the intensity the pace slows even further: volume is job one. "Hell on Wheels" starts with the throbbing guitar and slowly morphs into a deadly thunderous roar. "No Dice" finds its lyrical inspiration from the Jeff Spicoli character in Fast Times at Ridgemont High ("No shoes, no shirt, no dice!"). And "Weird Beard" is pure THC-inspired giggling lunacy--with a backbeat. All in all, King of the Road is an unadulterated blast of an album that reminds the teenage boy within why you fell in love with rock in the first place. --Tod NelsonCustomer Reviews:

"Breaker Breaker 1-9 !! How Do Ya Read Me ?".......2006-07-08
With "King of the Road," Fu Manchu dives in completely and gives itself totally to the new sound for the first time. Gone are the dark, sludgy sounds we heard as recently as "Grendel" and "Anodizer" on the last album, and the same sound which permeated "In Search of" and "Daredevil." Now, we get pure rock songs, with that signature FU wall of power chord pounding guitars, like "Blue Tile Fever," "Hell on Wheels," "Over the Edge" and "Boogie Van." These are the best songs on the CD, in my opinion, but truly every song on this disc is catchy, loud, and satisfying. They can be compared roughly to earlier songs "Urethane," "Mongoose (demo version)," "Action is Go," and "Hogwash."
They've dropped the sludgy sound. It still sounds like they've got 22 guitar players, they've just dropped the dark riffs. If you're cool with that, Fu is cool with you, I guess.

Never so much a band as a halfway house for guitar-prodigy Robert Fripp and an ever-shifting lineup of sympathetic musicians and fellow travelers, King Crimson has become one of prog rock's most enduring, if unlikely, purveyors. Culled from the band's decades-deep vaults, this live recording documents Crimson's relatively stable 1971-72 roster of Fripp, bassist-vocalist Boz Burrell, drummer Ian Wallace, and Mel Wallace on flutes, sax, and mellotron. Taking Crimson's repertoire as a starting point, the band uses its previous avant-baroque flourishes to leaven its edgy, manic flights of improvisation. What these performances lack in commercial accessibility is overwhelmed by their ferocious execution and free-form ambitions--and even some occasional musical humor, such as turning the stately "In the Court of the Crimson King" into a brief blues romp. And if fans wondered just how far afield Fripp and company could venture in their showcase solos for their signature "21st Century Schizoid Man," the second disc here serves up 11 frantic examples, edited together into one massive, live disc-length megamix. --Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
Double CD, special edition of live performances during 1971-72 drawn from the archives of the King Crimson Collectors' Club. The first CD is a series of performances beginning with the play-in shows at the Zoom Club, Hamburg through to the final Earthbound tour of America. The second CD is a compilation of sax and guitar solos played during performances of 21st Century Schizoid Man throughout its life. DGM records. 2002.Customer Reviews:
First album = jazzy, good; second album = just plain obnoxious........2005-12-04
If you liked early crimson....you'll love this...it's just.....WOW!!!!!!!!.......2005-07-30
What I will tell you is.....forget the EARTHBOUND live album...probably the worst sounding official album I ever heard..and to think...they said it was HDCD.....what a joke...I feel totally ripped off for buying that Earthbound piece of crap...but THIS album.....WOW!!!! It has everything you'd expect from a KING CRIMSON performance.....very transparent...and well balanced....tight drums and bass....and the musicianship...well.....that's what a KC performance or studio album is really all about......it's all here....and you have a front row seat......to experience over and over and over....
Just go order the CD...you wont be disappointed...I promise.
An extremely odd compilation.......2005-05-27
One of the biggest problems with this line-up is they had the tendency to incorporate almost blues based riffs into their already established "symphonic" progressive rock sound. While the marrage of progressive rock and blues jams can often produce wonderful results, that is definitely not the case here. Crimso simply stumbles through and each jam, while trying to remain a tight unit. Probably the most absurd example of this would be the blues interlude in "Get Thy Bearings" or the blues version of "In The Court Of The Crimson King," although you only get about 40 seconds of the latter title before the abrupt end of the disc (you have to get one of the Crimso collectors edition discs to get the whole song).
The second disc in this set features the beginning and all of the solos of "21st Century Scizoid Man" edited together to make one enormous 53 minute long song. Why anyone would find this disc nescessary is beyond me. While the sound quality of the first disc was pretty good, the second disc brings back memories of the poor sound quality of the "Earthbound" album. The solos, while they start pretty seemlessly edited together (although the sound quality changes from solo to solo are pretty noticeable), you are later greeted with a huge gap towards the end. Where one would have expected Fripp to have just edited the end of the song on to the mass of solos, he just simply awkwardly ends the disc after the last solo. So essentially the song is incomplete, making this listening endeavor a complete waste of time, unless you find the "21st Century" solos that fascinating, that you have to hear them over and over again.
I would only recommend this album to the most diehard Crimso fan, especially a fan of the Boz Burrell line up. More than likely the Crimso devotee already has these recordings on the individual King Crimson collectors club releases, thus making "Ladies of the Road" rather redundant.
disc two is worth it in itself.......2005-03-13
Now, the real treat is disc 2 - the reason I bought this. Just for this alone, the disc would be worth more! I have always loved the wild improvisational passages that sprang forth from live versions of "21st Century Schizoid Man". This is the Uber-version - a pulsing, churning, soaring amalgamation of numerous performances of the song's central instrumental explorations - It is sick, sick, sick - gloriously crazed jamming at a sustained fevered pitch. I just got this today and have played disc two about four times in a row - man, I think I am growing tentacles - this stuff is so intense! If you love the intensity of the early Crimson, then you owe it to yourself to ingest this one - it is extreme brain food to be taken in healthy doses through the ears. MMMMMMMMMMMMMM
One of their very best, believe it or not!.......2004-05-14
Bill Bruford is highly overrated, in my opinon -- the drums on Ladies of the Road are much more thrilling, and they shift between tempos (well, meters, actually) much more often than Bruford ever did. The drums propel this incredible excursion into funk/jazz/rock with an intensity unheard on all other live KC recordings in my experience.
Who'd have thought I'd only find a recorded example of KC's onstage excitement and brilliance on a CD set featuring the 1971-72 band? Earthbound and Islands are so generally detested that they happen to be the only two pre-1981 releases I've avoided buying. I came across Ladies of the Road and was intrigued by the promise of an entire disc of improv on the fast section of "Schizoid Man." I wasn't let down! Beautiful, brilliant, hyper, speedy jazz that could be called "thrash jazz" blurts out of the speakers in "remastered good bootleg" quality for 50 minutes. It even cuts off like a clandestine recording or something. Fantastic! I listened to disc 2 four times the first night I had this double set. It must be heard to be believed.
Mel Collins is a brilliant sax player. His duos with Fripp are manic, imaginative and uplifting, and this pair-up provides some of the most incredible music in the group's whole catalogue (along with, again, the maniacal drums and Boz's growling voice, which is better than Gordon's but not as good, obviously, as Greg's). "Cirkus" is slower but heavier than the studio version (you can almost see the crowd's shirts being blown off when that mellotron storms in!), "Pictures of a City" will make you hear the song differently (I love that fast middle section, and it's incredible here!), and the snippet of "In the Court..." at the end is a hilarious, Muddy Waters-style parody of itself. Who says Fripp doesn't have a sense of humor? The cover of the Donovan song is surprisingly good. "Schizoid" is mind-blowing and stunning.
And then there's the second disc, which I know I keep going on about, but it's the most stimulating live Crimson music available on disc (except for the live material on the Starless album, of course), and gives the listener a perfect example of what people are talking about when they say that this band was a monster on the live stage. It's hyper and unbelievable. This has seriously become my 2nd or 3rd-favorite KC album of all time. Great release! Thanks, Robert!
Folks: YOU NEED THIS.

King of the Road Roger Miller.......2007-02-27
This album reminded me life was simple. School was School and
work was work. life wasn't totally dominated by these 2 elements
of life. We laughed at ourselves at this time.
Buy the album for a reality check.

"the man behind Varese Sarabande ~ Robert Townson".......2001-04-06
For those of us who buy each album ~ people who work to create them ~ the artwork ~ musicians ~ and a list of some of the most talented composers and conductors ~ John Barry, Elmer Bernstein, John Debney, Georges Delerue, Cliff Eidelman, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Michael Lang, Henry Mancini, Joel McNeely, Alfred Newman, Alex North, Miklos Rozsa, Dimitri Shostakovich, Frederic Talgorn, Franz Waxman, Rick Wentworth and John Williams ~ and as always the sound quality and performances by the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Seattle Symphony Orchestra, London Symphony Orchestra and National Philharmonic Orchestra is dynamically flawless and simply superb.
This economically priced 2-CD-Set ~ pure film score sampling ~ is worth it's weight in gold. One should not have a favorite from this vast collection, but if asked ~ it would be "TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD" (1962) composer Elmer Bernstein took it to the limit and beyond, the story-line, cast and score was the perfect marriage.
A big, big thank you to ~ Matthew Joseph Peak (cover/session photography) ~ Jonathan Allen, Geoff Foster, Bernie Kirsh, Mike Ross, Mike Sheady and Al Swanson (recording engineers) ~ Rich Breen (mastering engineer) ~ and for the extensive 28 page liner-note booklet featuring "behind the scenes" memories of these past 500 albums, may we look forward to future classics on the next 500 CD's from producer...ROBERT TOWNSON!
Total Time: Disc One 71:20 on 19 Tracks & Disc Two 71:24 on 17 Tracks...Varese Sarabande 302 066 225 2...(2001)
