About the Artist
Bruce was born 8/21/54. The second brothers cousin on his mothers side twice removed ( and three times asked to leave ). The nephew of The Mighty Hip Eine.

Born the son of Harry Nichols, a 1st generation record collector, little Bruce grew up in a rich atmosphere of various sound patterns such as Bill Boyd and the Cowboy Ramblers, The Cannon Jug Stompers, Jed Davenport, The Blue Sky Boys, The Delmore Brothers, Gid Tanner and The Skillet Lickers, The Light Crust Doughboys, Willie McTell, Tampa Red, Sonny Boy, etc… You get the picture. He had heard these sounds before he had heard a single note of R&R.

By age nine Virgil Stockwell had, oops, excuse me, wrong narrative. Anyway, by the age of nine little Bruce won a talent show singing a duet harmony of a Beatles cover song, Please Please Me, with a friend. From this point on music became an obsession with Bruce. His father taught him guitar, mandolin and harmonica and condemned him to a musicians life. His fathers advice was, “Keep it as a hobby and don’t become a drunk”.

Several decades and a century later Bruce still has a very expensive hobby and is only half drunk, most of the time.

With over 200 song credits to his name (and they’re all gems, ya know) Garden Variety is the essence of Bruce's Musician/Songwriting zenith (heavy…).

Garden Variety,Bruce Nichols,Heem Street Music LLC,And on the third day He touched the peripheral convex of every kind And blaming sounds were heard across the land. The vibrations of deathless music.

4 out of 5 stars Too bad.......2006-07-24

What a great band these guys were. They were truly the first band that I fell in love with back in high school. I couldn't help but notice: 1) people confusing this band for another. Unfortunatley, with a name like Garden Variety, there are many bands with the same name. 2) The release dates listed here have to be wrong. I distinctly remember this album coming out first, and "Knocking the Skill Level" coming out 2nd. Yet Amazon says this self-titled album came out in 1997 and "Skill Level" came out in 1994. Those dates are wrong, not that it affects the music. This self-titled album came out I believe in 1993, with "Knocking the Skill Level" coming out in 1996. I may be off, but this was def their first album, and "Skill Level" was their second.

Anywho, I've read the comparisons to Superchunk and Jawbreaker and they aren't totally without merit. But this band just seemed to be doing something different, at least at that time. I dunno.....these guys have their own sound. Loud, more yelling as opposed to screamy vocals (but not annoyingly so), yet full of hooky melodies to the well-trained ear. And absolutely some of the best lyrics you'll hear for this style of music. Too bad Radio 4 can't hold a candle to the two GV albums. Buy "Skill Level" first. If you like it, buy this one. They're both killer IMO.

3 out of 5 stars STOP AND KILL THE ROSES.......2005-06-15

With a band name more suggestive of a cheap packet of garden seeds, as opposed to anything Greenday may covet, Garden Variety's 1996 debut has 15 tracks, all sounding like an angrier Superchunk, and all nearly interchangable in their similiarity. This can be a bad thing for half-listening ears; the drone of these punkish songs may sound like the same song repeating, and a good thing for the attentive, who may find the exceptional hoarse garage vocals, constant guitar, and loud drums, pounding the same path in each song deceiving, as it leaves subtle progressions and changes to the sonic landscape, more revealing in it's totality, than the sum of it's parts, like a plot of bare earth becoming a garden with a little help from Miracle-Gro. Drummer Joe Gorelick created the cool street scene artwork on the CD front and back cover, looking like the work of an excited Van Gogh after an outing with Greenday.

Yes, Garden Variety were a good band, but I'd hardly call them emo, and yes they are from the tri-state area, but they are from Long Island, not from New Jersey.

uh, I think you are thinking about another band. This was the emo/punk band Garden Variety from NJ who broke up about 5 years ago. They sounded like Jawbreaker with loooonger songs. Members are now in Radio 4.

what a great, great band this was. true they are probably all workers now as i know their old roadie but from what i heard they are all playing and touring in 3 different bands so there you go! . anthony roman is in this new wave sort of band called "radio 4" and anthony rizzo is in this band called "vic thrill" and joe gorelick is in "sugarhigh" with the guy from texas is the reason and the bass or guitarist of shift . sounds cool, anywayz this was one helluva talented band. i was sooooo pissed when these guys called it quits. what the hell happened!

I saw Garden Variety many many moons ago, and I bought "Knocking" at the show. I must say that this was one of the best buys I have ever made. If your looking for some angry, fast, and just plain fun music, check out Garden Variety. I only wish I knew what happened to them!
