5 out of 5 stars READ THIS BEFORE YOU BUY.......2006-11-29

Do NOT buy this version - buy "Club Classics, Vol. 1 - 10th Anniversary Edition" instead. That version is the 1999 remaster of the British edition of this CD. It has all the tracks on this CD (including the original CD version and the single version of "Back to Life"), plus bonus tracks and improved sound.

Now, once you do your search and find the 10th Anniversary edition, you should absolutely buy this CD. This was one of the best releases of 1989. It almost singlehandly brought back 1970's-influenced soul music and contains some of the best house music of 1989.

It is a very warm-sounding album, with a rich sonic texture. What the hell does that mean? These aren't just some pre-programmed pop ditties; Jazzy B. and Nellie Hooper put some thought and effort into this one. They also got screwed out of the 1989 Best New Artist Grammy (the winner? none other than those musical revoluntaries, Milli Vanilli - who were not the best, new or even artists).

I'm not going to go into the individual tracks, other than to say that if you like "Back to Life" and "Keep On Moving" you are going to like this CD. A hits compilation won't do Soul II Soul justice. Buy this CD and listen to the entire album instead.

5 out of 5 stars Soul II Soul - An influential Black UK Music Group.......2005-11-04

Soul II Soul are one of the most influential music groups in history. When tracks such as "Fairplay", "Keep On Movin" and the massive UK No. 1 "Back to Life" hit the charts in the late 1980s, black music groups across the UK suddenly switched to producing harmonious vocals over hip hop beats. "Another Soul II Soul rip off" was a popular quote when music magazines reviewed such releases.
Originally a sound system, famous for their party's at "Africa Centre" and the Fridge Nightclub in London, the group was a loose collective of singers and instrumentalists, based around founder Beresford Romeo AKA "Jazzie B". This release was originally named "Club Classics Volume I" - and not "Keep On Movin" as per the re-issue.
"A Happy Face, A Thumping Bass...for a Loving Race" was Soul II Souls motto - which the "funki dreds" certainly embodied. "Back to Life", the groups highest charting single ever, is here in a capella form only. Well, the track starts of a capella. Three minutes in, and Caron Wheelers vocals are laced with one of the grittiest hip hop beats ever produced (the beat was later sampled by a slew of American hip hop artists including The Goats, LL Cool J, Mobb Deep, Yo Yo, Ice Cube and Ghetto Boys ) before the track melds into "Jazzies Groove" - in which Jazzie speaks the "story" of Soul II Soul over a funky bassline and chorus horn stabs. Soul II Soul enjoyed considerable - if but brief - success stateside, when "Back to Life" hit the Billboard RnB charts. Jazzie B appeared to present an award at the American Music Awards in 1990.
This album's production sounds as fresh as it did upon its initial release and its fusion of diva vocals and hip hop rhythms would resonate with most modern RnB, funk and soul fans.

I love "Back to Life" and "Keep on Movin'." I purchased the cassette back in June of 1989. As the years went on, I misplaced my cassette. Today, these songs are really popular and I hear them several times a month on my local radio station, but I am so thankful for the opportunity to purchase this one again, especially the CD. Thank you Amazon!!

5 out of 5 stars You should get this one.......2004-11-26

The songs in this CD are incredible. I don't know why this group never caught on in the United States. All of the songs hit the core of soul music. It's at the top of my list for dance music in this genre. The beat throughout defies description. It's alive, powerful, vital. Take this cd to your next aerobic class, and I'm sure it will be played more than any other, because almost all the songs are jumpin'. You must get this one.

5 out of 5 stars Essential Listening!.......2006-07-16

"Keep Movin' on" is a compilation that ,with a few exceptions, covers the last year of Sam Cooke's recording career. The last album released in his own lifetime, the great "Ain't That Good News" is almost completely covered here; along with rarities, singles and some of his very last recordings from November 1964.

For people who only know Sam Cooke from pop-hits like "Only Sixteen", "A Wonderful World" and "You Send Me", it may sound a little odd that Cooke is often called the creator of soul-music. This wouldn't be the case if they were familar with these late Sam Cooke recordings. "Ain't That Good New" is my favourite Sam Cooke original album; and most best from songs from that album such as "Meet Me at Mary's Place", "Good Times", "The Riddle Song" and the title track are included.

Other highlight are "Shake", "That's Where it's At" ( I believe this song inspired Otis Redding to do "That's How Strong my Love is" ), and the previously unreleased "Keep Moving On"

Fine informative 26 pages booklet included!

Essential listening for fans of early soul-music - and fans of good music in general!

5 out of 5 stars Gems and rares in his last days.......2006-05-08

Since I happened to give up a fine compilation CD "A Man and His Music", I had waited too long for listening to Sam Cooke's last recordings including 'A Change is Gonna Come', 'Another Saturday Nights', Good Times' and so on. However, now we can have them easily on CD because Abkco started releasing his hidden treasures, especially Cameo-Parkway recordings. If you want to taste only the cream of Sam Cooke tunes, you better get "Portrait of a Legend". But if you want to dig deeper, I recommend you to have this CD with "The Man Who Invented Soul" and CDs of his Soul Stirrers years.

4 out of 5 stars Second best Compilation.......2005-11-22

If you really want to get a good overview of the career of this legendary get 'Portrait of a Legend' because the overall standard of that CD is better.
Still this CD is worth buying because it has all the good songs and most of all has 'Yeah Man' (probably better known as Sweet Soul Music by Arthur Conley).
The best reason to get it is because it contains a previously unreleased but great song that is also the title of this CD.

5 out of 5 stars HIS CREATIVITY HAD NO END!.......2005-10-16

ONCE YOU POP IN THIS CD YOU'LL NEVER WANT TO REMOVE IT. I THOUGHT I KNEW WHAT SAM COOKE WAS ALL ABOUT UNTIL I BOUGHT THIS CD. LIKE THE RING IN THE RIDDLE SONG...HIS CREATIVITY HAD NO END. MY ONLY REGRET IN LIFE IS THAT I NEVER MET THIS ICON.

5 out of 5 stars "A man who's written most of his life in the songs that he sings".......2005-12-04

These 2 efforts prove Merle Haggard is one of the greatest singer-song writers that ever wrote and sang a song. "Portrait" produced 4 big hits for Merle. "Working Man Blues" has proven to be a timeless hit for Merle and one of his most recognized songs. The same goes for "Silver Wings". "Hungry Eyes" is my favorite Merle Haggard song. Perhaps it's because I saw him perform the song on stage about 35 years ago with tears streaming down his face. It was so personal, so real, so powerful. It comes out in this recording as well. I was only 10 yrs old, but I've never forgotten it. Some years after that, I found out Merle had written the song from real memories from his childhood. Not of his Mom and Dad but of some family members. He'd spent some time with them in their 'canvis covered cabin'. It was a long time before I heard Merle sing the song again in person. I always felt it was because it was so personal for him. The other hit song that became a Merle Haggard standard is "Every Fool Has a Rainbow". All the other songs are worth a listen as well.
"Movin On" is another testiment to Merle's gift as a singer-song writer. "Always Wanting You" (written for Dolly Parton) is another deeply personal song. Merle went through a period of serious infatuation for Dolly. Of course he really did love her, just like millions of us do. "Movin On" was the theme song for a T.V. series of the same name.
This is a "must have" collection for any Merle Haggard fan and a great sample for those who are becoming Merle Haggard fans.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant twofer with strong Dolly connection.......2005-03-21

Keep moving on (the second album here) was the album that really made me take Merle's music seriously. More than any other album of his that I'd bought up till then, it showed me that he was much more than a singles artist. Of course, it didn't do any harm that the album has a strong Dolly Parton connection (via several songs) but every song here is a real classic.

The three big hits on Keep moving on are Moving on (an excellent trucking song), Kentucky gambler (written by Dolly) and Always wanting you (written by Merle about Dolly). All three of these songs went to number one on the country charts. Of the other songs, my favorite is the touching ballad, You'll always be special to me. Written by Merle, Dolly covered the song and included it on her album, Bargain store. The Dolly connection on this album is completed by Life's like poetry, which Merle co-wrote with Dolly, Dolly's own version later appeared on her album, All I can do.

Merle complains wryly about women in A man's got to give up a lot, though he must think the sacrifice worthwhile as he sings I've got a darling for a wife and These memories we're making tonight - two other fine songs. Two other excellent songs (September in Miami, Here in Frisco) compete an excellent album. I'm not sure if Keep moving on is still my absolute favorite original album by Merle but it'll always be special to me.

Portrait (the first album here) may not be quite as strong overall as Keep moving on, but it includes several classics including Working man blues, Silver wings and Hungry eyes. There are several other fine songs including What's wrong with staying home, I die ten thousand times a day and Every fool has a rainbow. At the very least, it is a worthy companion to Keep moving on.

If you want to explore Merle's music beyond the hits, you will find much of interest here.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting........2002-10-22

JXL's remix of the Elvis obscurity "A Little Less Conversation" made one thing abundantly clear: in the world of rock and roll, nothing is sacred. If a DJ can get his hands on it, he can--and WILL--give it a dance remix, prompting cries of blasphemy. Rock purists will certainly pull out their hair after three minutes of "Keep it Movin'" from DJ Funkstar de Luxe. I don't think there's been a huge demand for dance remixes of old nuggets from the likes of Bob Marley or Bob Dylan, but they do surface here anyway. Marley's "The Sun is Shining" is set to a thumping house beat, and the groove is so infectious, you can't help but bob your head. Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower" gets a discocentric treatment as well. Bob Dylan: from 60's folk icon to disco king? Who knew? Other remixes include "Give Me You" from Mary J. Blige, and an energetic facelift of "She's a Lady" by Tom Jones. But not everything here clicks, and some of the mixes come across as clumsy. "White Horse" by Laidback is fine as it is, and the remix that surfaces here is wholy unnecessary. Anita Ward's "Ring My Bell" could have benefited from a tighter remix, but Funkstar's is too generic and adds little to the original. But "It's Too Funky in Here" by James Brown works impressively. Overall, this CD is okay, but it comes across as a bit gimmicky at times. But as remix albums go, you can do far worse than this.

5 out of 5 stars IF YOU WANNA DANCE!! GET IT!!.......2001-06-19

I bought this album about a month ago (give or take a few weeks...everythings a blur) and I have to say that if you are in the mood to simply dance, you have to get this CD.

Their are some killer remixes on here. and I love the way 'Funkstar De Luxe' samples, well not only samples, re-does classic hits by Bob Marely, Grace Jones and Tom Jones.

Heed my advice, this is an awesome dance album with some killer grooves. If you want to dance, buy this CD!

5 out of 5 stars Am I out of touch???.......2001-06-06

I can't believe that everyone who lives to shake their bootie doesn't absolutly love this CD. My karate class uses it as back music on spar night. I have it on all the time. It is cross generation music for anyone who wants to smile the second they turn it on. Maybe I am not as cool as the club scene, but I know what gets me going...this is it.

5 out of 5 stars great stuff.......2001-05-18

i think this album is great. it's probably not the best to sit and listen to the whole thing all at once, but each song individually is amazing. all the songs are well done and mix in quite well with other stuff.

love it

3 out of 5 stars An Interesting CD.......2001-04-18

This CD is quite interesting, I really like the remix of Bob Marley's Sun Is Shining, I Also think the Remix of Grace Jones' Pull Up To The Bumper is well done as well. However, The other remixes on here do not equal the intensity of the first 2 tracks. I enjoy Ring My Bell by Anita Wells but its all pretty much down hill from there. The other songs are average but they lack the ability to grab your attention like Sun Is Shining does. I do recomend this CD, It is a great departure from what we usually hear on the radio but It could be alot better.

There's music for Saturday night, and there's music for Sunday morning. The late Sam Cooke made music for both days and, in fact, every day of the week. Cooke was blessed with a fluid, emotionally resonant tone and a graceful, effortless élan, and his legacy has only grown over the years, in spite of his violent death under mysterious circumstances in 1964. Keep Movin' On not only keeps Cooke's flame burning but turns it up a notch, including 23 tracks, 21 of which have not been available to the public for many years. Most songs on this album (many of which were written and produced by Cooke) come from the latter part of his career, and the title track, a finger-popping and soulful stroll, was recorded a month before Cooke's death. Featuring extensive liner notes by noted writer Peter Guralnick, Keep Movin' On features such Cooke classics as "Another Saturday Night" and "A Change Is Gonna Come," along with a hip-swiveling cover of "Tennessee Waltz" and the elated "Yeah Man," whose melody became Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music." In this era of neo-soul, it's often rewarding to go back to the source, and given the wealth of great music for which Cooke's sophisticated passion was a source, this collection is a must. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars Parties and pathos - a masterwork!.......2003-04-07

It's great to see all the praise this CD has received in other reviews, and I completely agree with everyone. Sam was a master of his craft, and in these late recordings he achieved new and greater heights than ever before. If only he had lived longer! One reviewer here said that with Sam, you always have one foot in church. How true! He even pulls spiritual pathos out of his party songs. Check out the gospel-style call and response of "Meet Me at Mary's Place" and "Good Times", in which "we're gonna stay here 'til we soothe our souls, if it takes all night long." Oooh! Then he can turn right around and make you boogie to a heartbreak song, as he does in "Tennessee Waltz", referring to his ex-friend as a "dirty dog" (NOT in the original lyrics). He throws in some dixieland jazz with the humorous "Cousin of Mine", in which a double dealing femme fatale gets caught red-handed, and attempts to persuade each of her men that the other is her long lost cousin. "Good News" isn't gospel, it's my girl's comin' home. Check out that banjo! "A Change is Gonna Come" has been well-praised by others here, but don't think of it just as a protest song or as something from another era. Think of it as being about you, today, and you'll feel its impact. This collection is the high water mark of a great career and a great man.

5 out of 5 stars Moved by Keep Movin' ON.......2002-08-15

To me there are two catagories of singers; Sam Cooke and everybody else. I mean has there ever been a greater voice in popular music? In the cd "Keep Movin' On", there is some of Sam's best work. Let's start with the obvious "A Change is Gonna Come" may possibly the best r&b song ever recorded. Then you add such soul gems as "Good Times", "That's Where It's At", "Sugar Dumpling", "Meet Me ATt Mary's Place" and "Rome Wasn't Built In A Day", and you really have something special. On top of that Sam further displays the beauty of his voice with his eloquent rendition of the "Riddle Song". This cd also includes a number of standards and other Sam Cooke hits. I've heard all of these songs before except for the title song "Keep Movin' On". What a gift for all of Sam's fans...that song is absolutely awesome. There is not a singer today (or any other time) that can touch Sam Cooke. When you here Sam Cooke sing you have one foot in church. Compared to the "studio" stuff singers are releasing today Sam Cooke shows us why he was the MAN WHO INVENTED SOUL! Buy this cd and get ready for greatness.

5 out of 5 stars Sam Cooke: The Rest Of The Story.......2002-06-12

It is obvious that when the "Man Who Invented Soul" box set was conceived, it was hoped that this material would make up its fourth disc. What we got, instead, was a disc combining "Night Beat" and "Live at the Harlem Square Club," which were nice if you didn't already have them... but I did! And of course, it meant that you got a career retrospective of this charter member of the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame that didn't include the end of his career! The manager Sam hired to gain him artistic control of his own career, Allen Klein, now owns the masters that make up this disc. It's a shame that he and RCA couldn't find a way to make the complete package happen, but this disc (definitely) has anything else you could want, that is not on the box set.
So give a listen to "Good Times", "Good News", "Shake", and Sam's masterpiece, "A Change Is Gonna Come." The sound quality is excellent. A couple of big treats are "Yeah, Man", the song that so inspired Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music," that Sam was given a writer's credit; and "It's Got The Whole World Shakin'." I went into my first listen to the song (it's never, ever played on the radio despite being a big posthumous hit), expecting to hear some kind of a continuation of "Shake." I couldn't have been more wrong. Sam was known to keep a close eye on the latest trends, and 1964 had been a big year for a certain record company out of Detroit. So if you can imagaine Sam Cooke meets Holland/Dozier/Holland, get this disc and give "It's Got The Whole World Shakin'" a listen. It was the very last song he ever recorded, and it's pretty clear that the "It" Sam is referring to, is The Motown Sound! In summary, this is the disc you need to complete your history of Sam Cooke. If you have the gospel/early years Sam on the Legends of Specialty series, The Man Who Invented Soul box set, and this CD, you've got it all, on six fabulous discs!

5 out of 5 stars love this man!.......2002-05-19

I just love this man as a performer his voice just thrills I love my cd and can't wait for Sam's official website! thank you so much for sending my cd hassel free!

      Product Description

One of the great things about Seventies blaxploitation films is that, even if they were, um, perhaps a guilty cinematic pleasure, they frequently had a kickin soundtrack. Willie Dynamite, originally released in 1974, is no exception. The musical score and the record production were both overseen by the late J. J. Johnson, who is widely thought to be the finest jazz trombonist ever, having recorded with Count Basie, Charlie Parker and Miles Davis. This time out, hes gone to the street for inspiration, crafting a soundtrack that stands with the likes of Shaft and Across 110th Street, even if the movie itself might not have. While most of the album is instrumental score, three tunes feature Martha Reeves (of Vandellas fame) on vocals, billed as Martha Reeves & The Sweet Things. The movies director, Gilbert Moses III, also was listed as co-composer on several of the tracks. If you wanted to buy this album before this release, you could expect to pay in the three-figure range (other rare record sites and eBay auctions can confirm this). We proudly make it available for your pimpin pleasure at a far more reasonable price. Remastered from the original tapes in 2004 by Grammy-winning engineer Gavin Lurssen, this compact disc version includes a mini poster of the original front and back covers of the album release (which makes it easier to sing along with Keep On Movin On and Willie D).

1 out of 5 stars sub par tracks, conservative dance beats.......2005-05-18

After the first rather dark instrumental, the next few tracks are of the upbeat, funky house type. "I Can Cast a Spell" steals a line from the classic "I'm Every Woman", namely "I can cast a spell...secrets you can tell", sung over and over to a funky disco beat. My favorite tracks are tracks 5 and 8, moody, dark songs with female vocal. The last three tracks are repetitive, uninteresting songs, and the final track is extremely long, and extremely boring, with a sort of tropical sound. Nothing of club anthem quality on this disc. 4 out of 5 stars "Funky" is indeed the right word !.......2001-03-03

Wow ! Great album, super set of classic songs remixed for the year 2000! Funkstar De Luxe is really reinventing the "disco sound" ! The only low side of the album is that "sand in my shoes" remix of "Sun is shining" included as the last track of the album... The sun is really shining brighter when it's "up tempo" !

Great buy ! (4 stars instead of 5 just because of that last track !)
