What's sugar and spice and rockin' all night? Well, "a couple of six-foot guys singing about training bras and slumber parties" might not be your first answer, but after seeing them tear up some of the Los Angeles club scene with their infectious faux teen-pop and tongue in cheek do-gooderie, you might reconsider.
Their Cd and their shows have the pace of a pack of firecrackers and the energy of an eight year old hopped up on a Slurpee and Gummy Bear binge. It's hard to say what is improvised or scripted. The tunes are catchy irresistible head-bobbers. They blend seemlessly with the band's Brownie Troop-308 themed schtick. One of the numbers is a hilarious rockabilly tune that helps the audience brush up on their Spanish language skills in order to earn their merit badge. (Among the reviewed vocabulary words are "chalupa" and the Spanish word for dinero: "moola.")
It's this kind of kind hearted, just-trying-to-help silliness that distances what GIRLBAND does from mockery or mere parody. Besides that, they really do rock. The songs are G-rated, solid, rockin' pop. Their stage presence is tremendous, at times amazing, like the Little Rascals meets Cheap Trick.
The four fictional cartoon-character* members of the band are played by two guys, "Muffin" and "Flufferpuff" (it's a safe bet that these are psuedonyms), in the traditonal rock and roll bass/drums/guitar arrangement. Yes, somehow the two manage to play all the instruments, along with occasional bursts of trombone and toy piano.
With titles like "(I Can't Kiss You 'Cause I Have) Braces," "Pinky Swear," and "Boys Are Stinky," they're loose enough to make you laugh, yet tight enough to make you dance. In their own lemonade-stand way, they are a ton of fun. Many of their fans feel understandably comfortable bringing ther small children to the shows, where they dance and jump for the gum and prizes the band tosses from the stage. As one fan put it, "I can't explain it. Girlband just makes me SO happy."
