Gorgeous music, bad quality cd........2007-04-13

The music is Mozart's and is fantastic. The last piece on the first disc
stutters halfway through, and seizes up my system. I don't have time to return items to Amazon. On the positive side, most of the time Amazon provides quality products and service. I gave 3 stars because I love the music.

A good collection of his best work and I find it helps me focus when I'm writing or contempating life.

"We exposed these animals [rats] in utero and then sixty days after birth to different types of auditory stimulation and then we ran them in a spatial maze. And sure enough, the animals that were exposed to the Mozart completed the maze faster and with fewer errors. And now what we're doing is we're removing their brains so we can slice them and see neuro-anatomically precisely what has changed as a function of this exposure. So it may be that this intense exposure to the music is a type of enrichment that has similar effects on the spatial areas of the hippocampus of the brain." --Dr. Frances Rauscher

Dr. Frances Rausher sums up what I feel happening when I expose myself to this incredible composer (Mozart).

I have yet to grow tired of any of the tracks yet, but I will invest in more of his work soon.

Mozart's music.......2005-10-17

This is a review of Mozart's music, not the cd. Mozart is praised to the skies by all and sundry, including most musicians, including my father, who no doubt has his reasons. But my feeling about Mozart has always been that there is nothing in Mozart's music that is other than music. There is no logical impressionism, there are no events that seem to be transpiring as in, for example, Beethoven. Mozart is just music. Mozart is to music as pure mathematics is to science. It hints of nothing else and has no application. I find some of his music irritatingly trivial, for example, Eine Kleine Nachtmuzic. This is mechanical music that one can imagine being piped in by a totalitarian government that insists everyone be cheerful. If Disneyland was an eighteenth century totalitarian state, Mozart would be its Muzak. The populace would be awakened, like Chinese train passengers, at 6AM by the strains of some allegro. They would arise and busy themselves with their ablutions in a state of thoughtless cheer, never for one moment leaving the surface of things. That being said, the second movement of Mozart's clarinette concerto is the music that one will hear on going into heaven.

From a pure-pleasure standpoint, the first Beethoven's Wig was nothing to flip over, and the second disc in the series follows suit. However, that is not to say that this is not a valuable and possibly ingenious record. Those unfamiliar with the premise will quickly get the picture: Producer/writer/lead singer/chief clever guy Richard Perlmutter gathers a bundle of important classical works (Paganini's "Violin Concerto #2," Strauss' "Blue Danube Waltz") and makes up silly, catchy lyrics to lay over them, informing the listener about the piece or its composer. Standing out for their offbeat brilliance this time are "Dvorak the Czechoslovak" ("Humoresque #7," Dvorak) and "Wow What a Wedding Cake" (Wedding March from A Midsummer Night's Dream, Mendelssohn). Few stabs at mixing education with entertainment succeed so well. As a bonus, the second half of the CD repeats the symphonies straight up, presenting a neat opportunity to quiz kids 5-12 on what and who they've just heard. --Tammy La Gorce

Greatest baby gift ever.......2007-03-15

Both of my grandchildren (and their parents and grandparents) are hooked on this CD and all of the silliness and beauty it brings into our lives. We sing to it, dance to it, and find ourselves thinking about it at odd times. Who can't love singing Verdi VERY LOUD? I've now started giving this as a simple baby gift, especially to those with older siblings. They are already equipped with clothing and nursery gear, and Beethoven's Wig invites the whole family to gather round...even if it is just on short car rides.

My husband, 18 month old daughter and I all love this CD. It's a staple in the car. One caveat- these lyrics will get stuck in your head and I now find myself singing the "words" to these songs when I hear them in a store or commercial! I'm hoping this means my daughter will recognize these songs as she gets older.

More Great Fun.......2006-03-13

Like the first volume, this CD encourages young children to enjoy classical music. The silly lyrics sometimes impart factual information on the composer or the piece. There are 11 sing-along symphonies and then the 11 symphonies are replayed without the lyrics--total of 22 tracks. Booklet with lyrics and trivia is included. All our children (aged 2-12) enjoy this CD, as do we.

My children loved Beethovens Wig 1. I checked this one out at the library. Then, we decided we had to have this one too.
Yes, one is the best but 2 is still wonderful.
Save yourself the shipping and order both at the same time.
We all thoroughly enjoy it. My 4 yr old can name these classicals when he hears them elsewhere and he can hum these beautiful songs. Much better than kiddie rhymes and Disney jingles. Culture your children the funniest way!!

The tunes and word stay with you and before you know it, you are signing them along. My two kids (ages 9 and 7) ask me to put the CD on as soon as we get into the car. What a wonderful and fun way to get them to love classical music!

A Wonderful Collection.......2007-04-11

As a selection, this is highly representative of Mozart's music. Just seeing the volume of work makes one marvel at Mozart's genius. Hear everything from piano to woodwinds, symphonies to concertos as well as religious pieces and operas. On my cd player, which is not a very expensive model, I get fine tonal quality and dynamics. I would highly recommend this box set to any fan of Mozart's work.

Celebrate Mozart's 250th at a Budget Price.......2006-01-11

This month will mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of one of the giants of the classical music world. While I am certainly not a classical music snob (the only Mozart piece I can identify is "Eine Kleine Nachtmusik," and what little I know of his life came from the 1984 movie "Amadeus"), I recognize his genius and the significance of his music.

This 20-CD box set gathers all of his major symphonies, concertos and operas into one massive collection. All of the selections are performed by European musicians (eg. the Budapest Philharmonic Orchestra, the Berliner Kammerorchester, etc.). While not household names, the music is uniformly excellent.

If you're looking for an inexpensive purchase (I got mine at a national retailer that rhymes with "Clam's Tub" for under $20!) to kick off your "Rock Me Amadeus" party, this is a great choice. RECOMMENDED

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

Superb Modestly Priced Favorite Arias Collection!!!.......2001-02-12

I received this as my 20th birthday gift from my bestfriend and I was amazed at the quality and the content of this CD. Some of the arias which I am immensely fond of are included, i.e. "Habanera" from Bizet's "Carmen." And who would have guessed that the soprano on track 10 performing Queen of the Night's Aria from Mozart's "Die Zauberflote" was none other than Hellen Kwon? Amazing!

I really love this gift from my bestfriend for it was thoughtful and well, what can I say that this makes an excellant gift for opera neophytes (though I am not an opera neophyte).

The highlight of this CD is track 13, Rossini's "Largo al Factotum" from "The Barber of Seville." When I first heard this, I was contemplating to myself as to where have I heard this before. Then it hit me: Michigan J. Frog's signature tune! (In case people are wondering who on earth is Michigan J. Frog is, he is the Warner Brother's frog; the frog can be seen on WB network channel). I love this track! Buy this for yourself if not this makes a perfect gift for your opera neophyte friend(s)! This track brings joy and smiles on my face everytime I hear this piece!

Wonderful introduction to opera.......2000-12-16

More than just a promotional sampler, the Naxos (8.555037-38) contains not only 2 CDs crammed with 39 excerpts from that company's seemingly bottomless catalogue, but also a 762 page book. The text offers plot summaries of almost every important opera and many of far lesser renown (Delius' "The Magic Fountain," Mascagni's "Iris," for example), a brief biography of the composers, a glossary, and finally a discography. The recorded examples are in chronological order from Monteverdi to Korngold. The entries in the book, however, are in alphabetical order--so be careful to look for "Zauberflote," not "Magic Flute," and so on.

Of course, Big Names do not appear on many Naxos opera sets; but this set is an introduction to that vast area of culture and is meant to be an educational (and of course a promotional ) device. Nevertheless, many of the selections on the CDs are beautifully sung, a very few lack characterization (the arias from"Don Giovanni" and "Nozze di Figaro" for two). But at this incredibly low budget price, who can complain?

As soon as I saw what this set had to offer, I immediately ordered a copy as a seasonal gift for a friend who wants to "get into" opera. I could think of no better gift.

On this first volume of a proposed "autobiography" of his listening career, producer King Britt updates the sound of the black radio of 1970s Philly with 1990s rap and production tricks. He makes sonic references to the smooth flow of Gamble and Huff as well as to the drawled proto-rap poetry of the Last Poets, and Britt honors mellow diva disco with a gorgeous, faithful-in-its-fashion cover of "Last Night a DJ Saved My Life." The last great black ALBUM of the 1990s.......2006-05-16

My title may be extreme to some of you, but I really do feel this way. By the time, this album actually came out, there were countless Maxwell wannabes, D'Angelo had virutally disappeared, and female R&B was being dominated by a skinny, headwrap, wearin' sista from Texas. In all honesty, everyone was starting to sound like everyone else.

If I hadn't stumbled into Tower Records and decided to check this one out on the listening station, I would've never known about this album. It's a great ALBUM...meaning it's great from start to finish. And because this is a "concept" album (an overused term, but anyway...) a film without pictures so to speak, you almost HAVE to listen to the album from start to finish. In all honesty, I owned the album for several months before I learned to appreciate it as a great album.

The song that made me purchase the album was "When the Funk Starts to Swing", a sweet slice of jazz-funk harkening back to the heyday of CTI records. Once I actually started listening to the album in its entirety a realized that every song on this ablum--save one--is a standout cut and has its own identity. The previously mentioned tune is one of my favorites, along with "Jimmy Leans Back", "Gettin' Into It", and "When the Funk Hits the Fan" (a dance-club take on "When the Funk Starts to Swing").

The one weak spot on this otherwise glorious album is "The Reason", which unimaginatively lays vocals over a sample of Boz Scaggs, "Lowdown." The real gem is that you get to hear a clip of King Britt's "original mix" of "The Reason" just before the "lowdown" version starts. The "original mix" can be found on the Sylk 130 "The Reason" EP. Why they didn't use this far more superior version of the song on the album is beyond me. "The Reason" EP is definitely worth seeking out for this song as well as an extended version of "When the Funk Hits the Fan."

Anyway, this snafu not withstanding, this is still THE last great album in black music for the 1990s.

Make Sure To Get The Unedited Version.......2005-08-10

This seems like a great cd but unfortunately my copy is for kids or something and all the "swearing" is swerved out. It's extremely irritating and keeps me from enjoying the tunes. Very disappointing and it doesn't seem to say that it's the "clean" version anywhere on it.

Funky beats take you back to HS.......2004-06-22

You'll remember chillin' on the stoop of your best friend's house in tenth grade, listening to a boombox straining some musical sounds through the air... even if you never did that.

The tracks Britt (aka Sylk, it's one in the same) creates here are infused with a deep soul. Male vocals and easy rapping stand tall on some tracks, but there are never any hos or bling-bling in this rap.

Female vocals take center stage, and they're a decidedly different feel than the masculine tracks. Very poetic, some deeply sung as if from a smoky jazz club.

This is music for people who grew up in the majority of the US, not a scrubbed-up suburb version or the down-and-dirty ghetto place. There are elements of both those here, with a track like Taggin' and Braggin' obviously talking about committing small crime, in this case graffiti.

However, most of the issues here are overtaken by the groove: buy this album for its flow. Standout tracks include the aforementioned Taggin', the wonderful, true-to-its-roots "DJ Saved My Life" cover, the super-groovy title track, and a wonderfully-sampled The Reason.

Some of the tracks are a little too serious in their poetry, but if you're into that, you'll love it (namely, "A Day in the Life," and "E.R.A"). Break out the beatnik berets and start a-snappin' your fingers.

Overall, however, this album is all about a great groove, and it keeps it going on lots of nicely-crafted tracks. A great discovery for those sick of modern rap and something closer to Tribe and De La Soul, but with not as much of a ghetto, street edge.

A Great Mix Of Urban Grooves.......2000-04-18

This CD was given to me by a person who read some of my CD reviews. I heard the track "When The Funk Hits The Fan" a couple of years ago but never knew who made it. This was a great trade because I'm always in to new underground music and this one is excellent. A touch of acid, funk, and soul cover CD and I'm my ears were blessed by it's sounds. A great CD for collection of good music.

For years now KIng & Britt have given us locals of phily something to listen to weteher it was back at the old weekly at Sylk (I wounder if thats were the name came from thought doubt it for britt and king had words with one of the owners) or at the monthly at fluid, Either way this is a great album. Also the more diverse the listing background of the producer/DJ the better the Music! and this is an example of that notion. Its amust Buy....

Fricsay gets one of the best installments in this series.......2005-10-31

After the international success of Great Pianists of the Twentieth Century, there was high expectation for the Great Conductors follow-up. For whateer reason--poor sales, less than riveting performances, dubious choices of conductors--the series more or less flopped and was cut short. Thus we have a Great Condcutors survey without Bernstein, Solti, Abbado, and Carlos Kleiber, among others.

Some of the two-fer sets ae winners, though, including this one devoted to Ferenc Fricsay, whose career flourished in post-war Germany but was cut short by his premature death in 1963 before he turned fifty. It's a cliche to say "fiery Hungarian," but Fricsay did conduct with a lot of temperament, as shown by the wonderful live Galanta Dances of Kodaly, with the Vienna Phil. This 1961 broadcast is a highlight, but so is almost everything on Disc 1, inclduing a lively Shostakovich Sym. 9 and a strikingly forceful Symphonic Metamorphoses of Hindemith (although its sonics are a bit blurry compared to the generaly excellent sound, mono and stereo, throughout--unusual for a compilaiton that consists entirely of live performances.

The second CD is filled with more conventional repertoire: Beethoven's Leonore #3, an Eroica, and the Cosi fan tutte Overture. Fricsay was associated for much of his career with the RIAS Sumphony Orchestra formed under the Allied occuption of Berlin, later changed to the Berlin Radio Symphony Orchestra. They sound scrapy in the early selections from 1950 and 1952 but come together for both the Beethoven performances, which come from a single concert on Feb. 1961--it also happens to have the best sound.

Fricsay wasn't fiery in Beethoven, however; here, at least, he chooses broad tempos (sluggish in the Scherzo), but there is so much inner intensity and drama that the Eroica comes off extremely well. In short, there's not a single performance here that doesn't add to Fricsay's high stature. Five stars without a doubt.

The most remarakable hungarian conductor.......2004-06-06

Gifted of a amazing sense of genuine bliss, Fricsay signed several qorks in the file's treasures.
This double CD contains works never released before, and it 's a must for all these hard fans Fricsay (like me). Fricsay gives us a brilliant performing of the ninth of Shostakovich ; his Hindemith is suggestive and provided of inner passion; for all of us is well known that Fricsay as Dorati were champions conductors in Kodaly's music, specially Dorati. In this sense Fricsay was more selective.

But the great surprise arrives when you listen the Eroica. Believe me when I say we are in front of one of the most overwhelming and powerful readings of this piece ever recorded before. Still it's understandable how this performance hasn't released before.
Fricsay's approach is plenty of wisdom. The first movement is eloquent and surrounded of the epic majesty which demands. The second movement is mesmerizing; the hidden voices , the hero's death is revealed with expressive force, commitment and deepness ; you know as well than me, this is the central locus of the Eroica , the gravity center of this monumental work.
In the third movement , Fricsay makes sing the orchestra with that glorious beating ; in the last movement Theme with variations , Fricsay depicts every one of them , giving its genuine expressive weight , the last variation , is filled of euphoria and wildness. And that's what exactly Beethoven expected of the leader conductor.
The mythological character of this giant symphony runs through all the performance. And I want emphasize this aspect, it's not a question of making a firework staement about the finale. If you are not invaded by the internal values that support this work, you'll never win this challenge.
If Fricsay would have lived longer, the Berlin Philarmonic status would have kept the same level hold by Furtwangler when he died.
A must in your collection.
Undoubtly one timeless unvaluable musical document.

Great Conductors of 20th Century = Best Reissues of the 21st.......2003-05-27

It's sad that the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" reissue series has not gotten more notice ... because it has my vote for the best reissue program thus far of the 21st Century. Drawing from the archives of all the major classical labels (EMI, Sony, BMG, DG, Decca, Philips, Supraphon, etc.), EMI and IMG Artists have assembled a wonderful series of affordable two-disc sets by the leading conductors of the last century. And unlike its counterpart, "The Great Pianists of the 20th Century," which are basically compilations of material already available on other CDs, the "Great Conductors" features rare and, for the most part, previously unreleased performances!

This particular CD, Volume 7, features the great Ferenc Fricsay, who died tragically young at the age of 48 in 1963. Thankfully stereo recording processes had been available for nearly ten years, so Fricsay has left us with a wealth of great performances. His albums of Beethoven Symphonies, the Dvorak "New World", and Bartok Piano Concertos are still regarded as definitive. What has been collected in this two disc set though is not his legendary studio recordings, but some equally excellent live performances, all but one with his beloved Berlin RSO. It is a delight to hear Fricsay tackle 20th Century masterpieces by Kodaly, Shostakovich and Hindemith on disc one, then dive into more standard fare with Beethoven and Mozart on disc two. The fact that half of these performances are in mono is not a distraction -- the sound is excellent throughout the collection.

Whether you are a serious collector of classical music or a beginner, the "Great Conductors of the 20th Century" has something for everyone. If the prized, rare performances previously unreleased on CD (or ever!) doesn't excite you, then use this as an opportunity to check out one of the greatest conductors ever recorded. Since stores are offering increasingly homogenized classical music sections, this conductor may not be in your collection, and that would truly be a shame.

For Sam Phillips, the days of star-making big-budget productions have passed. Having moved from Virgin, her major-label sponsor throughout the '90s, to Nonesuch, Phillips and longtime producer and husband T Bone Burnett have set aside the Beatle-esque pop that marked her uncovered 1988 gem The Indescribable Wow and the effervescent exotica that informed 1996's Omnipop for a more subdued approach. Still, the CD boasts the kind of complex lyrical passion that is a Phillips trademark. Phillips/Burnett collaborations have long been marked by sterling musicianship and Fan Dance is no exception: Van Dyke Parks, Marc Ribot, and Gillian Welch are among the contributors here. Sam Phillips is a marvel of inventive melodies. The intricate and imaginative works of art on Fan Dance continue to provoke a sense of awe, even after many, many listenings. Fan Dance is mostly acoustic, and I think such timbres may be more appropriate to this collection of Sam Phillps tunes than the Top-40 production of, say, Martinis and Bikinis. Of course this indicates a certain acquiescence to commercial obscurity, but true artists seem to be less concerned with that aspect of the business in order to keep their vision intact. And by this, too, I am charmed. Definitely filed near the front of my CD collection.

She should of stayed leslie phillips at least there she had some vocal ability. As sam phillips she shows what its like not to be a singer. Horrible, and I wouldn't recommend to anyone.

the reason this singer songwriter hasnt hit it big is because she can barely sing and her voice isnt nice to listen to----the songs are provocative and interesting--someone else should sing them ! and the music isnt bad--- but who could listen to this??- who would want to when u can hear birds or the drone of a refrigerator humming or nothing- sweet nothing----

I call myself the ultimate Sam Phillips fan, yet when I bought "Fan Dance", I was really disappointed and couldn't get into it at all. I really missed all the big-production music. So, I set it aside - hoping that another day maybe I might be able to appreciate it better. Well, several weeks passed and I happened to come across her video for "Incinerator" on Yahoo Music Online. I was captivated by it and watched it several times and fell in love with its minimal sound, complex and humorous lyrics, and her very sexy delivery. So, I found the CD, popped it into the player and wow, I loved it!! I think those of us who loved the big production sound of previous CDs will be initially disappointed, but if you give it a chance to grow on you, it definitely grows on you and I absolutely LOVE it!! I can't stop playing it!! This is one thing I love about Sam Phillips - she never makes a CD that sounds like any of her others. For those who found this release disappointing, I would like you to listen to two songs, "Edge of the World" and "Incinerator" - which are two songs that are the easiest to get in to. Listen to them at least three times each in one setting and I'm sure you will find that you will begin to love these songs and this will help initiate you into the rest of the CD. The song that took me the longest to like "Wasting My Time" is actually my favorite song on this disc. "How to Dream" and "Soul Eclipse" are just incredible... It is amazing to me how much 'music' is here - even though it's minimal. It takes a lot of talent to do songs like these!! A very good release from one of the best artists out there - I just wished I could have realized what a great CD this was when I first bought it!!! I give it 5-stars but my only complaint - which seems to be common here - is that the CD is so short... I am left hungry for more - which is probably why I keep playing this CD over and over!!

I'm a recent fan of Sam Phillips. I was reminded of her after reading an article on her in the music magazine Paste (the greatest music magazine out there for "mature" music) last year. Although I'd heard of her over the years, I hadn't actually heard her music until this year when I found Cruel Inventions ... . That led me to the library where I got Martini's and Bikini's (which I promptly became a fan of). Then Fan Dance.

Sam is an incredible writer and performer. Fan dance showcases that. Although there are about 3 tracks that can be skipped over (the last three), the rest easily make up for it, and make the album well worth the purchase price.

It is dissapointing that the album is only shortly over 30 minutes, but when you're dealing with a true artist, it is rediculous to expect her to force a longer album out when it just isn't inside of her.

I'm not good at revewing songs on their own, but the "stunners" on the album are Edge of the World, Five Colors, Wasting My Time, How To Dream, Soul Eclipse and Love Is everywhere I Go.

Wasting My Time just melts you with a beautiful string accompaniment showcasing the cello. How To Dream is a fun song that makes you want to sing along, but not in a corny way--rather a "grown-up" kind of feeling. It's catchy and mature. Soul Eclipse includes an Asian stringed instrument and a backdrop of heavy guitar giving a mysterious feeling to the song. Sort of like you're looking over your shoulders. Edge of the World gives sort of that same feeling, too. Almost in a strange "x-files-ish" way. Five colors also grabs you in a "catchy" acoustic melody and intuitive lyrics.

This is the kind of music that makes you realize there really is true beauty and redemption in the modern music scene. This is the music of a beautiful mind. There's more behind the music and lyrics than you quite understand (at least that's how it is for me).

I really can't recommend this album enough. If you miss out on it, it truly is your loss.
