This deluxe double disc reissue is a superbly done follow-up to the treatment afforded Pavement's brilliant `92 debut Slanted & Enchanted. L.A.'s Desert Origins is a joy for fans, with the majority of the second disc previously unreleased demos and outtakes. Crooked Rain is enjoyable and has some of their best songs ("Range Life," "Gold Soundz," "Silence Kit") but it's a strange, transitional album by a band still a little wobbly on their prog-rock feet. With this '94 release, the stadium-ready lineup of the erudite garage group had solidified, though it was not quite solid. Erratic, eccentric producer/drummer Gary Young had been booted out of the band, whose previous recordings were primarily made by Scott Kannberg and Stephen Malkmus. With two percussionists and bassist Mark Ibold brought into the studio, Crooked Rain has a far warmer, less trebly sound to it. Among the many extras included on this expanded version are the band's two exceptional, unironic tributes to R.E.M. --Mike McGonigal

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Oh... Pavement... You make me smile.......2007-07-14

Any critic, worth their salt, knows that Pavement is one of the most underrated bands of all time. This album is the shining star that proves it. Very few bands have the ability to marry Noise Rock with Pop sensibility and get away with it (Sonic Youth manages quite well). Pavement had the uncanny ability to create a beautiful (sometimes haunting) melody, drag it through the mud, kick it in the face, and then make sweet, sweet love to it. "Stop Breathing" does just that. "Cut Your Hair" is a jovial romp through the barber shop, that could lighten the heart of even the worst of skeptics. "Unfair" is that punch you in the face, angsty punk anthem that just makes my heart skip ten beats.
"5-4=Unity" is an experiment in time signatures and overtones that us geeks just go nuts for. Not to mention all those luscious bonus tracks (37 to be exact). Some of which are kind of "meh", but when the original album is this good, it's hard to justify a score drop.
The only real downside is the last three songs, from the original album ("Heaven Is A Truck", "Hit the Plane Down", and "Filmore Jive"). Not that they're bad, they just aren't as good as anything else pavement's done (hence the lack of a fifth star).
Nonetheless, get it. Get it now. It will change your life.

5 out of 5 stars "Out on tour with the Smashing Pumpkins...".......2007-06-13

Pavement's second album is the one whereby previously dominant duo singer-guitarist Stephen Malkmus (S.M.) and guitarist Scott Kannberg (Spiral Stairs) rounded out their sound to integrate bassist Mark Ibold and percussionist Bob Nastanovich and become 90s alt-rock's slackest band.

Whereas 1992's Slanted & Enchanted's impudent lo-fi homage to The Fall had infuriated Mark E. Smith, the band - with drummer Steve West replacing the erratic Gary Young after he had jokingly pulled a gun on Malkmus - turned their attention to an incongruous take on, primarily, California surf-rock.

Malkmus' characteristically sardonic wordplay is at its most roguish on Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain, aiming affable barbs at The Fall, the Happy Mondays, the Smashing Pumpkins and Stone Temple Pilots. Crooked Rain... is something of an amalgam of the band's previous album and E.Ps, produced in more of a classic rock fashion, yet retaining their leftfield approach to songwriting and composition, harnessing the ramshackle aesthetic of Swell Maps, Sonic Youth-esque fuzz rush, R.E.M.-tinged despondency and the artful artlessness of The Replacements.

A further plus point of Crooked Rain... is that although the album is strikingly cohesive, the band pull off the feat of never repeating themselves, the album's twelve tracks skirting the boundaries of rock n roll, pop, balladry, jazz, jive, blues, punk and country to create a sound transcendent of each style's innate tropes.

The 2004 reissue of the record, entitled Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: L.A.'s Desert Origins is even more impressive, featuring 37 non-album tracks, some of which were altered and/or embryonic versions of songs that feature on the band's following album, 1995's Wowee Zowee.

An indie cornerstone, Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain proved beyond doubt that a band - even one as derisive as Pavement - could build a strong following outside of major label structures. Vibrant, innovative and droll Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain remains the standout in a discography full of seminal recordings.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Masterpiece!.......2006-09-22

All the critics adore this album. Is like a religion I do not understand. 5 stars is the norm (Rolling Stone, Spin, and who knows who else!) Myself, sometimes I like to believe that critics know more about good music than myself. That they perceive inuendos, trends, genius more than I am able to detect. Like going to the Museum and looking at a piece of art and you say to yoursel, "what is this crap?" only to be told a moment later, by a knowledgeable and reputable so called "art critic", that what you have or are witnessing is a masterpiece for whatever the fricking reason. Stephen Malkmus gets so many accolades I thought this guy was hot! So I bought the "Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain: L.A.'s Desert Origins. Yes, I bought it in 2006 figuring a classic will sound even better years after its release. Forgive If it seems I am committing a mortal sin when I say, this CD sucks, the hype is a lot better than the actual thing. And so many songs...These guys were recording any crap that came to mind, their egos bubbling through the process and yes, there are some tasty songs that stand up against any other but, 5 stars?! Who is kidding who? 4.5 stars? That is far too generous. And don't tell me I am missing the point, that is an "in" thing and either you are part of it or you are not, because I do not buy it. Disjointed, abrasive, lacking musical direction, at times downright depressive (probably one of its appeals), monotonous, what more can I say? The critics also say that James Brown "Live at the Apollo" is hot hot hot, and it sucks. I can probably bang a two chord tune and make a better song than Mr. Stephen Malkmus and his precious band. Too many songs for very little good ones is its main flaw. Yes, I did get emotional and for that I truly ask that you listen to this so called masterpiece and tell me, what is so hot about it? Is is a state of mind, a generational critical thing? Because musically is sure no great work. Sometimes an album has only one song that makes it worthwhile buyin and I can live with that. "Crooke Rain, Crooked R...." has more than one but to listen to the other crap diminishes the joy of owning this CD. Oh, but I am not an authority so please don't shoot me if I missed the secret point but somebody is going to have to tell me what is so magnifecent about this CD. The packaging is above average, if that counts. Pavement's "Crooked Rain, Cro....." 5 stars for the few jewels to be had, for the overwhelming rest 3 stars is more than kind.

5 out of 5 stars Back to the Gold Soundz.......2006-07-09

One word that has often been used to describe Pavement is genius. And now their best work of art has been re-released in a 2 cd box. CD 1 included the brilliant 'Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain'

You know when a band is considered great when other bands are compared to them. And Pavement was one of those. On their first singles and albums they were still a noisy, Sonic Youth type band but this album shows that they were now on their own. It also represents the move from pure noise to songwriting. This album is a balance between these two.

If the 90's were a reaction to the 80's, CRCR is a good example. Warm guitar sounds with emotion and lyrics fighting the fakeness of their day, to be seen in some bands (Stone Temple Pilots, Smashing Pumpkins) but also as shown by the fast and furious life in Los Angeles. Bye bye cold 80's and welcome warm 90's.

There are so many good songs that are indie classics on CRCR. 'Cut Your Hair' with the sighed chorus (and hilarous video) or P 'Range Life', with some harsh words about the Stone Temple Pilots and Smashing Pumpkins, sung over a rolling country beat.
Of the best songs ever is the love-song 'Gold Soundz'. This song is almost too amazing to describe and maybe pure genious shouldn't be talked about too much.

CRC made Pavement and Stephen Malkmus an instant hero in the (intellectual) indie scene around the world, up there with J Mascis and maybe Lou Barlow and Doug Martsch.

The rest of CD 1 is mostly songs that were not good enough to make it on any album, and you can hear. But they are still well worth listening too.

I consider this CRCR with a lot of bonus songs. A great overview of the period in which Pavement made one of the best indie albums in history.

The package itself also includes a fine booklet with some commentary on all the songs by Stephen Malkmus and also a history of the band and the album. Worthwhile.

4 out of 5 stars Some of the outtakes should remain as they were.......2006-05-20

The original is a four star album. It's a bit more cheerful (Get a Haircut, Gold Soundz) than usual Pavement and a bit country (Range Life.) Oh how I love the scratchy noise of 'Slanted' and the sparse bummer ditties of 'Watery Domestic'. There's more sunshine here. Nice and lazy vocals of cryptic innuendos(?) There are too many outtakes on here for my liking. The second half of disc two is pure garbage. 'Grounded' is a phenomonal tinkly guitar jam, something Sonic Youth would be doing on something like Sister. One of the reasons I didn't give this reissue a 3 star rating.

You are the experience.

All pieces contain compositions of pure Nature Sounds produced, arranged, edited and mastered by Chuck Plaisance and Suzanne Doucet. (aka Virtual Audio Environment).

5 out of 5 stars Perfect To Fall Asleep To.......2006-07-20

I bought this CD because I didn't really know which type of sound I'd relax most too be it ocean, rain, forest, etc. Well I love all the sounds on this sampler, and I play it every night. My hubby says that 20 mins into the CD there's a rooster crowing, but I wouldn't know because by that time I'm already fast asleep. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars 3-Dimensional Pure Nature Sounds.......2005-11-21

This excellent compilation of 20 different Nature Sound albums was out of print, but is now finally available again through ONLY NEW AGE MUSIC(repackaged and remastered). This album creates a journey through different Nature scenes all recorded by Chuck Plaisance, with a special microphone that simulates human hearing. The sounds were then edited and composed, arranged and mixed like an orchestrated piece but still remain pure Sounds of Nature. Like Bernie Krause Doucet and Plaisance take essential Nature Sounds and recreate an ambience that takes you even deeper into the essence of Nature.

Amazon.com essential recording

In the afterglow of his 60th birthday in 1997, Nonesuch Records delivered Steve Reich and his listeners an immense gift, this 10-CD retrospective of his work for the label, extending from his earliest tape-manipulation pieces to his most recent compositions utilizing samplers and the video artistry of Beryl Korot. Aside from the ear's liquid sense-making when it hears the dense and limber marimbas of Reich's Six Marimbas or his taut, dizzying Piano Phase, there is a physical response almost inevitable in Reich's music. It stuns and holds you. And he knows it. It's Gonna Rain struck an early chord of inventiveness, featuring an African American Pentecostal preacher's sermon and eventually spinning the title phrase into a jangling repetition of single words. Percussion works abound here: Clapping and Drumming stun with their deceptive similarity and warm clarity. Perennial favorite Piano Phase features pianists Nurit Tilles and Eduard Neumann synched up on two pianos and careening at full tilt in unison before their four hands fall out of time and phrase with each other, only to realign in a powerful swooping demonstration of energy and focus. The latter CDs hold abundant delights, many revealing Reich's late-discovered spiritualism and Judaica: Different Trains' examination of the Holocaust; Tehillim's shimmering Hebrew texts sung with fascinating choral power; Proverb's invocation of Perotin. Closing the set are recent pieces: Nagoya Marimbas, and the sampler-rich City Life and The Cave. --Andrew Bartlett

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Classic, but not the definitive..........2004-05-20

While a multi CD collection spanning 30 years does sound very promsing, Nonesuch cannot offer all of the best recordings of some of Reich's masterpieces (Music for 18 Musicians or Drumming), and some have been missed out completely (Music for a Large Ensemble), presumably because the piece was not recorded under the Nonesuch label. While the collection is formidable, a listener wanting to hear the best recordings of all the pieces might do better seeking out the older (or longer!) recordings of the pieces.

5 out of 5 stars Essential.......1999-02-24

The term "essential" gets thrown about too much. And heck, the claim that certain words get thrown about too much gets thrown about too much. But here is a collection that really *is* essential to understanding the nature of a whole shift not just in classical music, but in popular music and indeed in popular culture. So many of Reich's ideas and concepts have become so deeply embedded in current classical music, film scoring (any number of examples, but think about Tangerine Dream's score for "Risky Business" and Hans Zimmer's score for "Thin Red Line," for starters), electronic music and even the visual arts.

This box set gives the listener all of Reich's major works. I can't even attempt to describe them individually, but every one of these 10 CDs is compelling. For the totally uninitiated, take out "Music for 18 Musicians" (presented here in a crystalline new recording) to get an idea of what the core of this guy is all about. From there, you might want to listen to "Different Trains," "Electric Counterpoint" and "Six Marimbas" to get an idea of the pointillistic pulse minimalism that Reich contributed to the world. The earlier material is the more challenging, exploring the subtleties of rythym, phase relationships between sounds and shifting timings. Among these, the new recording of "Four Organs" is just outstanding.

Reich's works, along with the early works of Terry Riley and Philip Glass, form the foundation of an enormous edifice that has grown of music that attempts to return to its essential and hypnotic roots. With this box set, one of those pylons becomes clear.

5 out of 5 stars Warm and Inspiring.......1999-08-15

Calling Me Back to the Wild is a collection of songs that speak to one's heart. Sensuous and nurturing, the lyrics and melodies take you in a journey through the inner workings of life, love, hope... Michael Tomlinson has the virtue of finding beauty in everything and has the ability to perfectly convey his vision through his work.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Enlightening.......1998-11-14

Michael Tomlinson decided to do it HIS way. Abandoning the rules and regulations of his record company, Tomlinson quit to make music on his own. "Calling Me Back To The Wild" marks his first venture out of the gate and running away from the record company CEO's. His deft musical ability, teamed with his awesome lyrics make for an enjoyable (but scaled down) 1st offering of music, story and light. His music is easy to digest - not too preachy and always gives me a lift. Tomlinson is just as enjoyable in concert - like sitting down with an old friend in your living room. Buy one for yourself and another for a friend. They'll thank you!

4 out of 5 stars Support the Artist.......2005-09-14

Hey, this is a great album - acoustic versions of some of his previous tunes plus a few you can't get on other discs. As I've stated before, this guy is an incredible artist and a super nice guy as well. He owns his catologue of music so he has creative freedom. This probably also accounts for the fact that he is not marketed as well and thus extremely underappreciated. You need to buy all of his CDs so start with any one of them...I recommend starting in order with Run This Way Forever. You can't go wrong. But for pete's sake PLEASE do not buy these titles used for forty bucks from some scammer. Contact the artist directly and order from him (just google his name). That way the money goes to the guy who makes this beautiful music .... and supports his efforts to make more of it. That's how he makes his living! Keep up the good work Michael!

4 out of 5 stars Sometimes simple is better.......1999-12-25

I've enjoyed MT's music for a while now. Yes, it's relatively simple and yes, there is a distinctive sound, but the music is relaxing and sincere. This disc strips many of MT's previously-released tunes to almost the bare minimum.....MT and his guitar. If you liked the previously-relseased music, you'll enjoy the acoustic-only versions. If you've never heard MT before, this actually wouldn't be a bad place to start, though "Run this way forever" would be my first choice. This is actually (IMHO) a 4.5 star disc, but minus a 0.5 point penalty for use of the echo chamber effects. They're not excessive, and appear briefly on only a few tunes but, unfortunately, it is constant on one of my favorites (Yellow windows).

3 out of 5 stars A very sweet style.......1998-05-15

Michael Tomlinson is one of the truly nice guys in music. His lyrics are sweet, thoughtful and spiritual. Sadly, his style is still rather simple and provides few surprises or innovations for his devoted listeners. If you want to support someone who genuinely cares about the human condition, this album is for you. If you're in search of a rich musical experience, perhaps another choice would be more appropriate.

3 out of 5 stars What Happened Michael?.......2002-08-02

Sadly, over the course of the years, I think Michael Tomlinson ran out of things to sing about - every single song on this album sounds the same and is full of forced, tired lyrics. It is a huge dissapoint to me, because I discovered Michael on an Alaskan radio station one night in 1986 on the way down the Knik Arm, heading through the darkness to a single house up ahead in the distance where I was meeting friends. The song "Yellow Windows" came on just as I turned the corner to see the warmth of the lights inside the house beckoning to me as smoke swirled up from the chimney into the chilly Alaskan night. Where did songs like that go? Not since "Living Things" (and a few on that album could be tossed out) has Michael done anything daring musically or lyrically like he did on "Waves" from "Run This Way Forever".
My advice to Michael - go back to the wild for 3 months, camp out under the stars, clear your head, and give us something you like you did back in the 80's

5 out of 5 stars Another wonderful work from Michael Tomlinson.......2000-01-20

Trace the Sky is the culmination of Michael Tomlinson's previous work...forever inspiring, uplifting and soothing with beautiful, resonant melodies, sophisticated compositions and lyrics that seem to be written just for you. I can't stop playing this cd. His music is a rare gift and a true treasure.

1 out of 5 stars puppy music.......1999-03-04

I thoroughly enjoyed the earlier MT work "Face up in the Rain" and expected an even more mature and complex work in this offering. I was sadly disappointed. The entire work is in a single bouncy, happy, tiresome tempo with lyrics that I'd expect from a youngster like Jewel. It's going in the "to be sold" stack. I'll keep "Face Up..."

5 out of 5 stars Wow. Just incredible........1998-10-28

I don't know what to call Michael's music, except beautiful. His great melodies are accompanied by words of true compassion, love and understanding from the heart of someone who has experienced the full range of human emotions. You know that he cares about us all, individually and collectively, and it is powerful, healing music for me. He truly deserves our support as he integrates his work with his values, sacrificing what would have been sure stardom had he stayed in the "system", and choosing instead to produce this wonderful work on his own label. Check out his website. You can order all 7 of his cds from him.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Northwest's best kept secrets...........1998-10-25

If you like Jackson Browne, Jesse Colin Young, J.D. Souther, James Taylor - you'll dig anything by Michael Tomlinson. An artist who has refused to "sell out", he really doesn't typecast into any limited radio airplay category. "Trace The Sky" may be his best CD yet- although M.T. friends may disagree. Michael has a great voice, writes straight from his heart - and sings melodic, heartfelt, windswept spiritual stuff... This CD flows like a river- as does much of his work. Michael is one of those musicians that you never grow tired of. Sincerely- M.D. Witt

4 out of 5 stars Americana with Brit-pop roots.......2007-03-31

Minibar continues to straddle their UK origins and adopted California home. On this third CD the balance continues to tilt towards roots-rock, with the oft-mentioned Wallflowers and Wilco still being relevent comparisons; the Wallflowers' Rami Jaffee even turns up on Hammond organ for a pair of tracks. But even with their twangy guitars and rasp-and-whisper vocals providing a blend of rock, country, and soul, there's still an underpinning of Brit power-pop in the dense melodies and harmonies. The latter is highlighted on "Wide Open," thick with vocals and guitars reminiscent of Teenage Fanclub.

After a major label release for Universal and an indie on Foodchain, the band has issued this one on their own, distributing it through CD Baby and at their shows (including an upcoming tour backing Pete Yorn). The opening "Things I Left Behind" catalogs the abandoned jetsam of the indie experience in a travelogue of lost clothes, bandmates, LPs and experiences strewn through the years. On the flipside, "Can I Call You A Cab?" lingers over the physical and emotional remains of a relationship, pondering how to move on. The dissolute closer, "In the Strings," mulls the same quandary, but with a sense that 'goodbye' is the only answer.

The band's rhythm battery has the bouncy snap of a well-honed pop band, but with enough swing to give it soul. Simon Petty's voice defines the band's sound, with a rasp that sits perfectly among (rather than on top of) the band's mix of acoustic and electric guitars. Minibar may have missed the broad commercial window for their brand of rock (although Americana radio should eat this up), but those who love beautifully produced pop with twangy edges should check this one out. 3-3/4 stars, if allowed fractional ratings.
