Even without his highly regarded symphonies, various instrumental works, and monumental and influential work on the revision of the English Hymnal, Vaughan Williams would have made a major impact on 20th-century music with his many original choral works and his folksong arrangements. In fact, Vaughan Williams's folksong-collecting work was one of the more important contributions ever made to English music. This disc offers a wonderful collection of a cappella choral pieces, including some of Vaughan Williams's finest folksong arrangements. Besides "Ca' the yowes," "Full fathom five," "Greensleeves," and "The Turtle Dove," the program includes rarely heard masterpieces such as "Alister McAlpine's Lament," which brilliantly captures the mood of the song with serene, sensual harmonies and gently flowing vocal lines. The Holst Singers seem born to this music, giving us the music's full flavor without ever overplaying it. --David Vernier

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-07-21

Ralph Vaughan-Williams loved "the lilt of the chorus at the music hall...children dancing to a barrel organ, the rousing fervor of a Salvation Army Hymn, St.Paul's and a great choir singing at one of its festivals...the Welshmen striking up one of their own hymns...the cries of street pedlars, the factory girls singing their sentimental songs." This disc somehow reflects all of these influences. I think it makes him a true folksong specialist!!!The music included herein covers the whole of the composer's long career-from "The Willow Song"written when he was eighteen, to "Heart's Music",composed three years before his death at the age of eighty-six. The Holst Singers along with the two soloists:Ian Bostridge (tenor) and Michael George (bass)are very excellent in their renditions. The choir is perfection in balance, diction, ensemble and emotional content. Bostridge with his sweet and pure tenor almost moves one to tears especially in "Greensleeves" and "Ca'the yowes". And Michael George was also very moving in his solo:"Loch Lomond". It is as if the entire performing group were aware of a statement made by Vaughan-Williams before his death: "if the roots of your art are firmly planted in your own soil, and that soil has anything to give you, you may still gain the whole world and not lose your own souls."

5 out of 5 stars Songs that Never Fade.......2005-11-21

A selection of the best of RVW's folksong arrangements performed with insight and restraint by the Holst Singers, with help from soloists like the incomparable Ian Bostridge. Vaughan William's respect for these folksongs is evident in his exquisite settings, which reveal their depth and subtlety, without obscuring their simplicity.

This is a recording to cherish.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly, introspective, definitely the most soulful songs!.......2003-03-16

This collection of English and Scottish folk songs moved me to tears and made me experience a plethora of emotions over and over again. The beautiful melodies flowing from this CD conjure up melacholy, joy, sadness and wonder. They crystalise the most common human experiences and the mystery of existence into certain folksong idioms that, once listened to, will stick in your ears and stir your heart strings for a long time.

Salute to Vaughan Williams for documenting, preserving and arranging these gems of English and Scottish heritage. Holst singers performe splendidly. Their discipline and professionalism, and a sense of artistic direction shine through.

I highly recommend this CD along with John Rutter's "The Lark in the Clear Air" for all the sensitive people who take interest in classical music and traditional folk songs.

I wish I can give this CD 10 stars!

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A century of British art songs to delight those who love them.......2006-06-26

These 53 songs have been collected by Naxos from their extensive acquisitions from Collins Classics, and perhaps other British sources now out of business. There's a steady cottage industry, year after year, producing the typical English art song, which is usually based on folk songs, but even in more modern idioms is profuondly conservative and nostaligic. Half these songs, not to mention half the composers, are totally unknown to American audiences, but the familiar names of Vaughan Williams and Britten represent high quality, and the lesser lights, such as Warlock and Quilter, are mainstays in this repertoire.

I'd challenge all but the most addicted listener to make it through more than ten songs at a sitting, and many of these pieces are tepid, offering comfort rather than inspiration. The singers are among the best, but Graham Johnson and Steuart Beford, who do most of the accompaniments, are lackluster. I know that won't be a popular comment, yet if you compare any of these songs with rendiitons done by Janet Baker, John Shirley-quirk, and most recently Bryn Terfel and Ian Bostridge, you immediately notice how much more intensity and drama is pesent than htis colleciton reveals.

4 out of 5 stars Just short of excellent.......1999-06-23

After four extremely worthy releases on Philips label of the newly formed Musicians of the Globe under Philip Pickett, a fifth has just been issued that is of equal value (one can never get too much of well-done Elizabethan and Jacobean music, now that the Deller Consort is no more) but not quite of equally satisfaction. I have played and enjoyed very much their and Their has eluded me but sooner or later it will be added to my collection. Therefore I had obtained the latest entry, (456 507-2), with great anticipation. The generous 23 tracks are divided into instrumental, vocal with accompaniment and vocal without. The first two formats are what I expected: elegantly and (presumably) authentically peformed. Now so is the third, but the selections are quite long and really need some music behind them. The tunes are catchy but not quite enough to keep one's interest for the full 3 to 4 minutes some of them take. Yes, the words are witty, the situations are bawdy though never never explicit (in the best British tradition); but again interest is not maintained throughout the long and musically repetitive stanzas. Far more amusing were the old Elektra LPs with Ed McCurdy and guitar leering lewdly through a purely vocal program of dirty ditties. The singers (Joanne Lunn, Sally Bruce-Payne, Paul Agnew, and Roderick Williams) know what they are about; and indeed their singing is perhaps a little too refined given the material. Still ye lovers of the old-time song, do not pass this one up.

      5 out of 5 stars What's My Name?.......2006-06-30

When I first listened to the Fanmail cd and Dear Lie played, I said to myself, "this is the one." Meaning, I thought it had the potential to be the biggest hit on the album. I was wrong of course, but Dear Lie is a really good and heartfelt song. The song was inspired by one of T-boz' poems "What's My Name," which can be found in her Thoughts poetry book.

The lyrics "get out of my mouth, get out of me, out of me, out of me, out of me lie" sounds dirty, but the lyrics are innocent. T-boz is referring to the lie, but giving it human qualities, which is called personification.

You get music and language arts techniques all in one. What more could you ask for? :)

Sleigh Ride is a cool Christmas song with an interesting video to match. Feelings of nostalgia flood over me when stations play the song during the holidays. Lefteye's rap is funny and on point as usual.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Song.......2000-12-11

Dear Lie is my favorite TLC song. It has such meaning, and even though Unpretty had a great message too, this one also has a powerful message. Its up to ones interpretation of what a lie is, to me it helped me realize how my lies will always hurt me and how the lie is other people who betray me and need not be in my life. This is a beautiful song, thank you TLC.

5 out of 5 stars R&B icons over the Christmas holidays.......2000-10-12

"Dear Lie", the hit song from TLC is an emotional one. It is when you're down that will make you understand its deep and meaningful lyrics. Here's a run down of what's inside the CD: 1.) Dear Lie (Radio Edit) --- the radio version (but not the video one) of the title track. 2.) Dear Lie (Album Version) --- a longer version of the song. You have to listen to it to feel its meaning! 3.) Unpretty (MJ Cole Mix Vox Up) --- a remix of the second single of the album "Fanmail". Pretty Cool!!! 4.) Sleigh Ride --- the girls' Christmas single recorded way back from 1993. A great uplifting Christmas tune! Don't miss out on this stuff! I guarantee you, you won't regret it!

5 out of 5 stars Dear Lie Is Really Meaningful..........2000-05-07

I feel that this song has a really good and deep meaning. I figured the song out only after I read the poem 'What's My Name' from T-Boz's book Thoughts. A lot of TLC fans think that T-Boz is talking to a man, which is wrong. She might be talking about a situation involving a man, but the song talks about how she lied and thought that it would help her or her situation, but now she's worse off than when she started. It also says that at first she didn't know how to fix the situation, but at the end she stopped her lies and confessed. The poem talks about how the lie says that it is your closest friend, but not by choice, and how it doesn't like its user, but its user loves it. It also talks about how people are very well warned that the outcome of a situation when a lie is used is never guaranteed to be 100% positive, maybe not even 50%.

      5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2000-04-03

I think that this song has so much meaning to it. When I first heard it on 955 the beat, I realized I had a lot of connection to the song. I have this ex-crush and I just want him to go away. The problem is he's so damn nice that it's hard! THis song helped me express my anger and sorrow in a calm and unviolent way. Thanks so much TLC!

The new single from the group,TLC- "Dear Lie" is an obvious hit for obvious reasons. It has a smooth mellow groove to it with a cool melancholy vibe. Produced by Babyface and co-written by the lead singer of the group,Tionne"T-boz"Watkins. The lyrics are not only poetic but, deeply written. The song refers to lies...Lies that hurt and control. The video is great too. Dear Lie is no.1 on my list and is definetly Top 5 material!

Here's a chance to dial yourself back to Edwardian England to sample one of the most extraordinary singers of the 20th century. Clara Butt stood 6-foot-2 with a frame to match and a voice that easily spanned the range between a soprano's top notes and a baritone's low ones. An important singer, even if an acquired taste for many, Butt sang with a power that defied the primitive recording equipment of the time. However, Ward Marston has done an amazing job of sonic restoration, so even these acoustic recordings--made between 1909 and 1921--convey the quality of her singing. The repertory is representative of her concert programs: a nod to operatic and oratorio selections, classical songs, and a heavy dose of the folk songs and sentimental ballads that endeared her to audiences, helping to transform her into a national institution. These days, songs like "The little silver ring" and "Snowdrops" may have little intrinsic interest; yet Butt hasn't lost her own thanks to the quality of her vocalism, her one-in-a-million voice, mastery of legato singing, and the perfect diction that lets every word sound. She can take a narrative ballad like "Barbara Allen" and make it a gripping dramatic miniature, and she transforms the quasi-religious sentimentality of "Abide with Me" into something intense. --Dan Davis
