Editorial Reviews
Phyllis Schlomovitz learned her harp playing from the great European harpists of a generation ago-Joseph Vito of Italy, Kajetan Attl of Czechoslovakia and Marcel Grandjany, Henriette Renie and Renee Benda of Paris.
Twenty years as a successful orchestral harpist--fifteen years as Principal Harp with the Milwaukee Symphony and seven years as the featured soloist with the Lindner Salon orchestra, as well as appearances with the Chicago Chamber Orchestra and others was only the beginning! She moved to California, and signed up with the Nicholas Choveaux Artists Agency (London), and then became adjunct professor on the faculties of the University of California at Santa Cruz and and at San Jose, as well as the Music and Arts Institute of San Francisco.
Phyllis's teaching blossomed into a two volume Harp Method with accompanying Video Lessons, published in London by the Salvi Harp Company, the largest manufacturer of harps in the world. Her method has become a world-wide all-time best seller. She has written many arrangements for pop harp which continue to delight performers and listeners everywhere. {See, for example, keyword "SCHLOMOVITZ" on aol.com, "SCHLOMOVITZ" on the GOOGLE search engine, etc.)
Phyllis's annual concert tours have included appearances in Carnegie Recital Hall and Lincoln Center in New York, Wigmore Hall in London, the American Church in Paris, and many concerts in the UK and Wales, including a broadcast with the Irish Radio and Television Orchestra in Dublin. She has appeared as opening soloist at the American Harp Society Convention, has twice been soloist at the World Harp Congress, and has given concerts at the Concertbegow in Amsterdam and the Mozarteum in Salzburg, where an Austrian critic described her as the "...sovereign interpreter of the harp...". In her most recent appearance in Europe, Phyllis gave a master class and concert at Festetic Castle in Hungary. Phyllis has also given numerous master classes and concerts in Japan, Australia and New Zealand.
Phyllis has made twelve recordings on the Revolution, Jupiter, and EMI labels.
Product Description
In a "Truth is Stranger than Fiction" manner, Phyllis Schlomovitz left the world of classical music and her post as principal harpist with the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra which she had held for fifteen years, and entered the entertainment world in 1969.
She hade made her first album "Medieval to Modern Music For the HARP at CHRISTMAS" in 1968. It received excellent reviews and national distribution. As a result, a phone call from John Rickey, world famous California restauranteur, art collector, and connoisseur of art and music, changed the course of her life. Inviting her to come to California and play in his famous "Dinah's Shack," Mr. Rickey subsequently bought a harp for Dinah's and moved Phyllis to California.
While still maintaining her classical repertoire, Phyllis became an immediate success in the popular field as well, recording this masterful album "CITIES OF DREAMS," a collection of her own beautiful arrangements of nostalgic popular classics which have become favorites amongst her many fans.
