About the Artist
Chandler Hayes spent his youth bouncing around the globe – where as a six-year-old, Chandler regularly performed for the royal family of Jordan. He began taking piano lessons at the age of five from teachers worldwide and would continue to study classical piano throughout his life winning numerous competitions. Like many soulful performers, he started singing in church, where his father served as the music minister and his mother as the pianist. Chandler would alternate between playing the organ, piano and singing solos in the choir with definitive gospel flair. From the age of 14 – he began performing for a living playing piano and singing in piano bars, pizza parlors, churches and even funeral homes. Although never formally studying voice, Chandler taught himself operatic arias and auditioned for a scholarship to a critically acclaimed arts based local university. At the age of 17, he received a full vocal scholarship to The University of Tulsa where he bega! n classical voice lessons performing in recitals, operas and vocal competitions nationwide. However, his true passion was to perform his original music – in his own style. Submitting a tape of original songs which he produced, performed and arranged – Chandler received a full scholarship to the prestigious Berklee College of Music in Boston. While at Berklee, he received the opportunity to record in the studio daily – and perform with artists including Phil Collins, George Benson and Dolly Parton among others. Following Berklee, Chandler moved to New York City to further his musical career and earned his living as a professional studio singer --performing on thousands of jingles (Sears, Marshall’s, Parker Brothers, etc.) and hundreds of projects for artists worldwide. As a recording artist, Chandler was recently featured on the CD “Strazz – Street Jazz” – with Kirk Whalum, Ron Brown, Jim Chevious and Sam Simms. His latest project – “An Audience of One,” a debut CD of ori! ginal songs produced, performed, composed and arranged by Chandler will be released in February 2002.

5 out of 5 stars good cd.......2005-08-31

Ahmed jan khansaheb plays beautifully on this album. The one problem I have with this album is the rhythm. Othe rpeople have commented on this, however after carefully listening, you'll hear when Ahmedjan changes his timing from triplets to 16th notes, or others, the serangi player keeps speeing up or slowing down. in fact, There are many noticable spots where you hear the shift in rhythm. This is due in part to crappy serengi player....other part is that Ahmed khansaheb is either 84 or 74 in this recording.

5 out of 5 stars Tabla Maestro of the century.......2005-07-30

This recording is excellent, crisp, and musical although transferred from a 1964 Swiss Audio recording. The ambience of a true "Mehfil" has been created and its a treat lasting over an hour. The best feature is the rich, bass sound of "Bayaan" (usally played with the left hand Tabla or Dagga)of Ustaad Ahmedjaan Thirakwa that would make affcionados teary-eyed! I listen to this recording all the time whenever time permits and would highly recommend it for Tabla learners all over the world.

5 out of 5 stars Star of his time.......2004-11-07

Thirakwa is a venerable name in tabla circles. Very few of his recordings exist simply because of the time in which he actively played. Tabla playing has evolved considerably since his time so it is refreshing to hear a recording from Thirakwa's generation and contrast it with today's artists. Thirakwa was close to 70 years of age at the time of his recording. If you hear this recording, you will be amazed by the fact that a person of that age can play with such amazing clarity and dexterity. Recording quality is somewhat poor simply because of the lack of adequate technology. But one wouldn't buy this CD as much for the quality of the recording as for the quality of Thirakwa's playing and his knowledge. This recording is a compendium of rare compositions - a must have if you love tabla.

5 out of 5 stars Thirakhwa Khan Saheb is the greatest.......2002-04-05

The legend of tabla needs no introduction. I first heard this great man a very long time ago. To me, even if he just plays ""NA"", its enough. There is so much to learn just by listening to his style of presenting a bol. Some of the greatest bols of tabla like ""Dhira Dhira"" and ""Dha tita gida naga dhina naga"" come out so fluently that it amazes me. Even in his nineties, he played so much better than the modern tabla players. As we tabla players say, he had speed and weight. I dont care how old or how weak Thirakwa Khan saheb is. He is to me what pele is to football. The legend. The master. Thirakhwa.

3 out of 5 stars an alternative opinion.......2001-04-26

Some parts reveal awkwardness on the player's part, and the timbre of many of his strokes is not even. This man was not in his prime at the time of the making of this recording, if he was ever great as a technician (he has some famous compositions to his credit). He also had an annoying (to me) habit of playing very powerfully in slow parts, and skimming over rolls. While this may have been something which he would have done with any amount of technical ability, I think that it is likely that this habit stemmed from the coupling of his desire to play forcefully with his inability to combine speed with power. One more feature of the playing on this album which I find annoying is the uneven rhythm. I think that, rather than being what is usually thought of as bad time keeping, this unevenness is the result of emphases. Thirakwa is, to me, somewhat like a pianist who, in the name of "expression", never keeps a beat.

4 out of 5 stars When this all meant something.......2007-04-24

This is an effort by an aspiring Anthony Green and one of his early bands. I am generally pleased with most offerings from Green and I must say I did enjoy this as well. But compared to his other work it pales in comparison. It is an obscure ride, with songs like 'Flower, fist, and beastial wail,' you're never quite sure what they're talking about. I still enjoy going back to it every now and then as it holds a certain charm, in fact it is arranged very nicely, starting of with the slow, entrancing 'show your teeth,' then gradually building into some more fast paced songs which do include some well done screaming.

If you're an Anthony Green fan you will most likely warm up to this album, as long as you don't take it too seriously.

2 out of 5 stars Practice.......2004-07-27

Audience of One gave their best shot in making something work. I don't believe that the vocals delivered by Anthony Greene were as quite as n'sync with the rest of the music. The band could not find proper ways to tie in transitions betweens steady beats, sparatic lead-ins, or chaotic explosive harmony. The entire album was a failed, but valiant rookie attempt at polishing anything from a rough garage-style sound. In Anthony Greene's second go at finding his place in the sun, he must have landed a godsend with the formation of Saosin. Pro-active listeners who were left starved with the mere fifteen minuete of Saosin with their EP; Translating the Name; will not find compensation with the sound or vocals in this album.

5 out of 5 stars Unbelievable Sound.......2001-06-12

I absolutely love this CD. The lead singer Anthony has a an amazing voice. The way he can scream those notes on key is just mezmorizing. Track 5 is my absolute favorite. There is so much heart on this album. Anthony also appears on Zolof the Rock and Roll Destroyer's album, and once again rocks. This album is essential to your indie rock CD collection

Have heard many of them in person, and love this CD. Hope they release one for the recent Americana Motel show (December 02).

5 out of 5 stars listen again and again.......2002-10-17

I hesitated for awhile in buying this CD, thinking that it was just too much of the local scene for me. Wow, I was mistaken! I listen to this CD almost everyday, finding new nuances and my appreciation for local Washington, D.C. music growing. I now listen only to my local music -- Last Train Home, the Grandsons, Scott McKnight...

My friend Karen said it best, this is "the CD that changed my life." Listen to this, and you will find yourself getting out more and going to see these musicians play live. Reward yourself and buy Americana Motel!

5 out of 5 stars Neon Delights At The Americana Motel.......2001-12-06

Glowing with neon-cool intensity, Americana Motel is open for business in the honky-tonks of the homeland. The D of C has ensnared many a poor, wayfaring stranger with siren songs of sanctified lust, these are their children, born of bar room romance and late night liasons. Hopeful hearts and lonely laments, it's all in the words you meant to say. They're open all night and yes, there's still room for you, but be aware-spend one too many dreams at this motel and you'll never want to leave.

4 out of 5 stars Good Stuff.......2001-11-22

Superb performances of local music by Washington DC roots musicians. Homegrown, but deserving of national attention- there is some excellent songwriting here (Joe Tripplett, Scott McKnight, Karl Straub and more) with fine musicianship and singing by Bill Kirchen, Mike Auldridge, John Starling, Kevin Johnson, Lisa Mosciatello, the Kennedys, and other noted area artists. Album Description

Founded in 1971 by video artists Woody and Steina Vasulka, The Kitchen is internationally known as a leading center for video, music, dance, performance, new media and literature. The first institution to focus exclusively on cutting-edge, multidisciplinary works, it has been a powerful force in shaping the cultural landscape of this country. Over the last thirty years The Kitchen has documented every one of its performances with video and/or audiotape. However, in recent years much of this documentation, primarily recorded on what are now obsolete formats, began deteriorating. In 1999, under the leadership of Executive Director Elise Bernhardt, and with the dedication of The Kitchen9s Board of Directors and the help of numerous donors, The Kitchen began an initiative to catalog and re-master its extensive collection of 3600 videotapes. In the fall of 2001, an additional trove of audio recordings from the 1970s was discovered. While these tapes promised rare and exciting music by such artists as John Cage, Philip Glass, Laurie Anderson, and David Tudor (in the first box alone!), none of this material could be accessed without proper cleaning and re-formatting and the funds and facilities to do so. A recent collaborative partnership with The Looking Glass Studios and Philip Glass9 label, Orange Mountain Music, has allowed for the restoration of a number of audio reels. This work has been done with the goal of producing a series of CDs, From The Kitchen Archives, with New Music, New York 1979 as the first release. This 2-disc set offers re-mastered recordings from the landmark New Music, New York: A Festival of Composers and their Music, held at the Kitchen9s 484 Broome Street space in SoHo from June 8-16, 1979. The festival, which set a standard for new and contemporary music, paved the way for New Music America, the annual event that emerged the following year in Minneapolis and ran in various cities until 1990. Now 25 years later, these recordings are an invaluable time-capsule, a privileged view/listen into a historic event, initially heard by only a few hundred people. Beyond their historic value they offer brilliant and exciting music by composers now considered masters of the genre, as well as remarkable performances by figures nearly forgotten. While many recordings from the festival could be restored, several gaps remain: concerts that were either not recorded or whose tapes vanished into the ether of the last 25 years. That said, we feel extremely fortunate to be able to release New Music, New York 1979 as our first CD in a series that promises to make available more lost treasures from The Kitchen Archives, uncovering the origins of new music today.

    3 out of 5 stars Cool Sdtk...But..........2006-10-04

I'm gonna keep this one short & sweet...I'm a lifetime fan of Star Wars, loved the music as much as I've loved the movies themselves, sought to buy the original scores, had to choose between the real deal and this one, saved 20 bucks buying the Story Continues, and loved it from day one. However, once listened to a few times from start to finish one can't help but spot the obvious, while this is an awesome production and re-recording of the original scores, the Global Stage Orchestra relies solely on synthesized instruments and you can feel the absence of REAL instruments. But it's still a keeper...especially for the Imperial death march. ~*REDD*~

    4 out of 5 stars Actually a decent re-recording of classics.......2006-10-01

Let me start out by saying that this album isn't nearly as bad as many people are saying. I bought it about a year ago at a store up here when the initial album I was looking for was sold out. Not wanting to leave empty handed, I glanced around and found this totally by chance (maybe the force made me find it, who knows:)) and decided to give it a shot.

I wasn't entirely sure of what to expect when I put it in once I got back. Initially after the first fifteen minutes of listening to it, I started to feel as if I maybe should have bought something else, BUT at the same time it was still catchy enough to leave in until the end of the first disc. Before I knew it, I listened to all three discs in one sitting while working on a paper and I must say, it was definitely worth whatever I payed for it.

The music is different enough where if you're getting tired of listening to the same things over and over, you can put it in and not worry about listening to something you've heard millions of times over. However the music is similar enough where if you're in a Star Wars mood, you can put it in and still be satisfied.

The "sythnesized" Star Wars sound is very catchy after a while and a very good addition to any hard core Star Wars fans' collection, or just to anyones collection of music in general. It's interesting to hear how the music is still able to catch all of the emotion that is in the original soundtracks (especially in Episode III) and still sound different. I will admit that the tracks seem to be a bit out of "order". While episodes 4, 5 and 6 come first (which is fine) episode 2 is next, followed by 1, then episode 3, and then back to episode 2 again. Not sure why this is, but it's not a real big deal, just a little odd. Definitely worth buying if you're into collecting all things Star Wars.

1 out of 5 stars Fake instruments leave much to be desired.......2006-01-21

The synthesized instruments sound horrible. First off, when I bought this, I saw the name "Global Stage Orchestra" and was looking forward to hearing an orchestra -- of real instruments. What I was in for was a bad synthesized interpretation of John Williams wonderful music. If he were dead, I'm sure that he would roll over in his grave.

Many instruments sound so bad that it's distracting. For example, the smooth woodwind lines in "Duel of the Fates" sound detached and mechanical. Some brass instruments (which Williams uses liberally) sound more like car horns. Obviously not put together by a vocalist... the rear cover reads "MUSIC AND VOCALS PERFORMED BY THE GLOBAL STAGE ORCHESTRA." Apparently vocals are not music... which may be close to the truth in this case, since the vocals sound like hollow midi sampled voices. With so many great recordings out there... spend the extra few dollars and get a recording from a real orchestra.

1 out of 5 stars The Force is NOT strong with this one..........2005-07-11

My friend loaned me these CD's recently, and let me say they are nothing compared to the original soundtracks.

The recordings sound actually half decent for synthesized instruments, but after hearing the superb London Symphony Orchestra in the original recordings, any artificial orchestra (and even some real orchestras!) is a real let-down. Especially painful are the sequences which call for lots of brass; the LSO was so great at delivering a theme at full blast in an intense action scene, and the MIDI brass just sounds cheesey. The interpretation is poor in a few key sequences as well, too.

Star Wars fans really deserve better than this; get the re-mastered trilogy set:

I just purchased this 3cd set while in Europe. It's indeed not the original soundtracks but high-quality "studio orchestra" selections from all 6 of the Star Wars movies, including R.O. Sith, mastered in SBM 24 bit sound. A good listen for Star Wars and John Williams fans at a nice price, attractively packaged in a 3 cd fold out digipack.
