Album Description

Jazz is not only the "sound of surprise," as critic Whitney Balliett famously declared, but it can also be the sound of camaraderie. On this exuberant session, you can hear the pleasure the band takes in the music and each other, as they "play" Gershwin in the fullest sense of the word.

This is Frank Vignola's twelfth CD as a leader. A born and bred "Noo Yawkuh" (from Lawn Gyland), he arrived on the scene about 20 years ago, and his star has kept on rising ever since. Vignola is an exceptionally elegant, versatile player who has another distinctive characteristic; he uses his prodigious technique to serve the music, rather than his ego. He might also be the most expressive note-bender in the business. A fan of Charlie Christian, Basie and Bucky, as well as Eric Clapton, Vignola glides across genre boundaries without a net, playing full-frontal straight-ahead jazz with a dash of blues, a whiff of classical, and a splash of rock n' roll. But while his palette of influences is a rich and varied one, his personal style is distinct and unmistakable.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Just great guitar.......2007-05-29

Have a great respect for Frank Vignola's artistry. Reminds me of things
from my youth. Several guitar students would get together and jam.
Each of us would get to improvise while the others played rhythm.
Mr. Vignola never disapoints. The only way he could please me more would
be to make more recordings. (I'm 74 yrs old) Get busy Frank!

5 out of 5 stars Vignola Plays Like a Fine Lover.......2007-05-25

I had never heard of Frank Vignola before I heard his rendition of Summertime on my local jazz public radio station. After that I was obsessed with getting this CD and to make matters worse I had to wait for its release! When I listen to the way he plays this song it brings me to my knees. The care, the passion, the touch, the creativity, the expression that he brings to his instrument ... whoa. To me, listening to him play is like being invited to share in an incredibly intimate experience between two deeply connected souls (Frank and his guitar) where you are not sure whom is playing/leading who.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Songs Played By A Great Jazz Guitarist.......2007-05-18

This CD is filled with wonderful songs played by a great guitarist. If you like jazz guitar, this CD will find a permanent spot in your multi-CD player or IPOD.

5 out of 5 stars S'Wonderful.......2007-04-17

Crystal-clear recording, a tight top-notch jazz quartet, interesting arrangements, outstanding solos - who could ask for anything more?
This is jazz guitar at its best. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Mellow Moonglow.......2007-01-11

This is a very, very mellow album featuring two of today's top jazz guitarists, Pizzarelli and Frank Vignola. Vignola does most of the soloing, which is minimal, but the interplay between the two artists is worth the price of admission.

3 out of 5 stars Raining on the Parade.......2006-08-28

Well, 2 1/2 stars, but that isn't an option.

I hate to disagree with the other reviewers of this CD who seem to think it is wonderful. I'll meet then halfway, and say that Bucky Pizzarelli is wonderful. As for Frank Vignola? He demonstrates a very tinny and nasally tone throughout. Some people like this timbre; I'm not one of them!!

Overall it reminds me of that John Denver recording from the 80's, "Perhaps Love", where Johnny D joins up with Placido Domingo. John does fine in his own element, but once Maestro Domingo enters, the difference in skill level is painfully evident. Same here: Vignola is probably fine on his own, but put him up against a legend like Pizzarelli, and he ends up coming across as the proverbial "chopped liver".

The liner notes by Joel Dorn are entertaining, if not relevant, except to demonstrate the writer's love of Italian cuisine.

5 out of 5 stars Great Guitar.......2006-03-14

This CD makes one want more and more. It's my new favorite. I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Best Guitar Album I Own.......2006-02-18

I've never written a review for any CD, but felt I must for this album. I own loads of guitar albums - of all genres - and Moonglow is head and shoulders above the rest. It's absolutely sublime. You will fall in love with this CD.

5 out of 5 stars Picking at its best.......2005-10-09

Frank Vignola shows no mercy to his instrument and plays like hell. He is no doubt the best swing-guitarist around at this time. Look at his collaboration with Mark O'Connor to see him at work with Tiko-Tiko.

5 out of 5 stars Great Solo Stuff - No edits or remixing.......2005-01-03

Frank proves that he is one of the more versatile guitarists on the scene today. Great solo stuff. Check him out live...a great act.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant example of solo guitar.......2002-10-31

This is a delightful recording for anyone who likes traditional jazz and solo guitar, and will be especially appreciated by jazz guitarists. Although the influence of Django Reinhardt and the gypsy paradigm is evident, this is not an attempt to clone Django--Vignola has a voice of his own. And I would guess that Vignola would list Joe Pass among his influences; there are a couple of moments on this solo recording that remind me of Pass's Virtuoso album. In fact, the two recordings share two of the same selections.

Vignola's playing is fresh and expressive, never cloying or trite. The CD starts with a gorgeous version of Donna Lee, starting with a rubato head then moving to a rhythmic improvisation. His arrangement is rich, full of lovely voice leading. He is otherwise a master of the solo guitar, never taking us along on a single-note line too long without returning to remind us of the underlying rhythm and chord structure. He also displays impressive technique, hard to imagine how he does it, but it's not ostentatious. However, although I enjoy Misty on this CD, this version does not really bring anything new to the table.

By The Fire is an odd 23-second piece with frantic full-chord strumming. Train Ride, another shorty at 48 seconds, has a pedal tone played as machine-gun 16th notes with strums punched in intermittently without missing a stroke. This is akin to juggling an egg and a bowling ball.

Another oddity--maybe a practical joke to see who's paying attention, I don't know--the final selection, Manoir de Mes Reves, is listed as 4:01, but the selection actually lasts 6:43. At 4:01, there is a pause of 51 seconds before the music resumes, this time a different song.

5 out of 5 stars Is this Django's ghost?.......2001-07-10

Wonder what Django Reinhardt would be playing if he was still around these days? You don't need a Gypsy fortune teller... Just check out Frank Vignola's latest, and greatest, "Blues For A Gypsy." The style and sound is very, very Reinhardt, right down to his vintage Selmer-Maccaferri Gypsy guitar, and flamboyant Gypsy styling he employs with such incredible feeling and touch on every song. Fell in love with Vignola when we saw him live with Mark O'Connor and have been waiting over a year for this CD to be released. The wait was well worth it. If you are a fan of the jazz and blues style of Django, interpreted by Frank Vignola... arguably today's number one Gypsy guitar master... this is it! It's "DJANGO 2001!"

    5 out of 5 stars His best.......2005-02-21

Of all Howard Alden's Concord CDs, this is his best and is certainly my favorite. Everything works here: the choice of tunes is perfect and the playing impeccable. Almost all the tunes are taken up or medium-up tempo, and they all swing like mad. There is an especially inspired and cooking version of Jimmy Giuffre's "Four Brothers" composition (made famous first by Woody Herman, of course), and of a catchy and swinging Sam Jones tune called "Bittersweet," which is a blues with an 8-bar bridge. Very nice and highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Pleasure to Listen To.......2003-05-29

I have had this CD for a long time, and everytime I put it on, it just seems to get better. These three guys all play with such fire and imagination, yet are totally unique in their own ways. The real surprise of this LP is how controlled Jimmy Bruno's playing is. Bruno of course is probably the greatest technician among living jazz guitarists, and here he plays with such melodicism, fluidity and taste, that when he truly does let go, it's even more impressive than on the recordings where he burns nonstop.

    5 out of 5 stars Very nice.......2002-05-25

This CD has a mix of electric and acoustic, slow and fast. It is always interesting and one of the best over all jazz guitar albums I have heard.

    4 out of 5 stars A Marvelous Recording.......2001-11-16

Everyone I've known who loves jazz has had a few "personal favorite" solos from their favorite artists that just seem to stand out from all the rest. You can listen to hundreds of great solos and enjoy them all, but there are a few that NEVER fail to make the back of your neck tingle or bring tears to your eyes. These are the ones in which every note, every bit of dynamic shading, every rhythmic articulation strikes you as being PERFECT--a small masterpiece of composition. Among guitar players, Jim Hall & Wes Montgomery seem to have achieved this level of genius more than their fair share of times. WELL, this recording contains one of those rare "in the zone" solos. On "Song D'Autumne", a Django tune, after the opening chorus, Jimmy Bruno unleashes about 1 minute and 30 seconds worth of the most glorious sounding improvisation I have ever heard in more than 25 years of listening to jazz. Unbelieveably swinging. Incredibly melodic. Powerful.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that Frank Vignola is not showcased enough. That would be tough, though, alongside Howard Alden and Jimmy Bruno. Not that there's anything remotely bad on the disc--no. It's a great recording, that just happens to contain a solo worthy of the best ever.

      5 out of 5 stars makes 140BPM feel like a ballad.......2006-09-17

Some serious FAST bebop taking place here. If you like your jazz fast and your solos astonishingly virtuostic, this is the album for you. A very good overview of bebop from the 50s as well as few cleverly added modern (well, the 90s are modern by comparison, right?) songs.
The majority of the album is your expected jazz combos featuring horns, keys, bass & drums. Exceptions include an Oscar Peterson/Clark Terry cover of Dizzy Gillespie's "Shaw 'Nuff" (just keys & trumpet, but DON'T lower your expectations- it may be the most pyro-technic piece on the album), a big band tribute to Jaco Pastorious (fusion, obviously) providing Pastorious' "Kuru" and a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Speak Like a Child", and a very well executed Django Reinhardt cover (Appel Direct) by Frank Vignola.
This album was originally released at on Starbucks' "Hear Music" label.
