From the Label
Burl Ives died in April of 1995 at age 85. Among his lasting accomplishments, he was the voice of Frosty the Snowman and narrator of the long-running Christmas television special Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer. He found America's melodies in his own ancestry, the farm folk, evangelical preachers, and riverboat gamblers who made up the Ives clan in southern Illinois. At a young age he quit Eastern Illinois State Teachers College to earn his meals singing his way across the land.

Although 6 foot 2 and 300 pounds he didn't sound big. He had a voice that was soft and quivering and a heart that could turn silly into sad. He had an instantly recognizable voice that, like Burgess Meredith or James Earl Jones reached out and grabbed you. He introduced a multitude of fine old songs to people who didn't know them, and he sung them in a very straightforward and natural way. He was one of the first folksingers to gain a national audience.

He wrote his autobiography, titled "The Wayfaring Stranger" in 1948 after poet Carl Sandburg called him "America's mightiest ballad singer."

Having been an avid fan of his nearly all my life, and a singer of his songs when I too performed as an entertainer, I created this project specifically for Burl in 1970 and began developing it that same year. The highpoint of my career was when I finally was able to produce him in the recording studio and get his legendary voice on tape singing and narrating my own creation The Christmas Legend of Monkey Joe. After 28 years of development and market testing we are finally unveiling the project with hopes that it will become an integral part in preserving forever the Burl Ives Legacy.
