This is one of those records crafted purely to dance around to and have a great time with. "We're Going to Ibiza" has to be one of the catchiest dance-pop songs of the late '90s; luckily the rest of the Vengaboys' greatest-hits collection provides similarly hedonistic, gloriously vapid pleasures. The Vengaboys' sound is what might happen if one were to throw Ace of Base, Stardust, and Miami Sound Machine into a blender and press the Purée button. The group (two women and two men) may look like a Saturday morning Spice Girls-meets-the-Village People cartoon, but their sound is not quite as campy as they look; it's all about fun--nothing more, nothing less. --Mike McGonigal

5 out of 5 stars Best music ever.......2006-02-24

This stuff is the only music that gets me moving. "We Like To Party" is the best dance song there is. http://www.petitiononline.com/vengaboy/petition.html - Help bring the venga bus back to town.

5 out of 5 stars A Classic Euro Dance-Techno-Pop Album.......2005-10-29

Unlike some of the more recent entries, I didn't start listening due to commercials, but when I was living in Portugal and heard the songs played to pretty much unanimous appeal at the discotecques. 'We Like to Party' & 'Up and Down' (and the remixes) we're constants in the very last of the 90's. The latter song had it's own dance done by everyone in the clubs. I picked the album up when it dropped that year and continue to follow the Vengaboys. So for me, part of it is the memories, but alot of it is you can still not be sad and not stand still when you put on these tracks. It you like consistent sounding albums and you like upbeat, fun songs with dance beats, then I recommend you pick up this album.

3 out of 5 stars Completely Unpretentious and Positively FUN.......2005-09-16

Okay, I admit it: I got sucked in by that Six Flags commercial too. Glad that I did! There's no deep, dark, hidden messages in songs like 'Boom Boom Boom' and 'We Like to Party' - just happy bouncey beats. If you like techno, dance or Europop you need to add this to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Must Have.......2005-08-18

I really enjoyed it and it was very nice to have to CD since i do work at a SIX FLAGS and when ever some on askes me about the song I know what Im talking about. It has fun music and will make you in a good mood.

your mood.

If you are into House music, this is a classic you must own. Not because it has a great music selection or even the pretty box that it comes in for that matter but for it's mixing aspect of it. This album deserves the spot on your music collection as it brings out a unique form of music to your ears. This is what NYC underground huse music is about and simply put, this album defines it for you. I guarantee you that this album will blow your mind.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this one!!!.......2003-05-27

This CD set is amazing! Jonathan Peters creates a dark, sexy vibe and keeps taking it higher and higher over the course of two CDs. Can't recommend this one enough. "The Hurting" from Mac Quayle featuring Donna DeLory is by far the best cut but they are all hot. The companion DVD showing the Sound Factory crowd experiencing this music is kinda fun too. Hurry up and grab this one and get ready to FEEL IT!!!

5 out of 5 stars From Sound Factory to Your Living Room.......2003-05-22

If you are a fan of JP, or have ever been to the Sound Factory, you'll love this CD. This compilation is the best yet at bringing the dark, hard beats of SF into your living room. As usual, JP's mixing is absolutely flawless to the point of not knowing where certain tracks end and others pick up. I like CD 2 better, because it moves a little deeper into that Sound Factory feeling with dark, dirty tribal beats that will keep you moving. If you are looking for "Dance Party 2002", you've come to the wrong place. "Wanjeru the African" is a superb lead into "Dark Beat." "Space Ride," "From Dusk to Dawn" and "Thunder" will groove you and if you don't get up and move to Peter's mix of "No One's Gonna Change You," check your pulse. The Factory and JP - nothing like it anywhere. Play it loud. Play it late. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars JP Does it Again!.......2003-05-12

No one can deny the thrill and excitement of Factory and JP brings the party home on this set. Eclipsing his two prior releases, "Revelation" is everything that Factory is about. Dark, melodic, hard, progressive, sexy. CD #2 kicks it into a darker mood, but the music moves you start to finish.
If it weren't for JP's CDs I don't know what I would do. His music captivates and invigorates, and spinning about my living room, this set takes me to the soul of Factory.
If you don't have the two other sets, pick those up too! My only regret is that JP doesn't release more music. He is a musical god and an influential sound in the progressive scene; we've barely seen the beginning of what this man is capable of.

4 out of 5 stars Great compilation.......2002-05-10

I don't actually own this particular compilation, however, since I own nearly every recording represented on these discs...I think I'm qualified to comment. This is a wonderful representation of the high quality of work that DRG Records does.
The previous review is way off the mark. This is definitely not a waste of time or money. This is 25 years of preserving Broadway shows, Off-Broadway shows, studio recordings (mostly from the city center concerts), etc. So what if they "aren't as good as the original", DRG is preserving many recordings and artists that other mainstream labels don't or won't. You have wonderful recordings from Brian Stokes Mitchell, Nathan Lane, Debbie Gravitte, Tyne Daly, Anthony Perkins, Joanna Gleason, Marin Mazzie, Carol Burnett, Heather Headley, Patti LuPone, Barbara Cook, etc., and many of these are from Original Cast Recordings just as they appeared on Broadway. This is an excellent sampler of the work going on at DRG. No...I'm not an employee...just an avid listener and collector of theatre recordings.

1 out of 5 stars A disappointment.......2001-12-15

There's a reason you've probably never heard of most of the songs and shows on this album, not to mention most of the artists. This is a second-rate collection of second-rate numbers performed by mostly second-rate artists. In the case of the shows that were revivals, the performances on the original cast recordings were better. Don't waste your money.

5 out of 5 stars Hilariously Entertaining.......2004-05-06

I have no idea what the rest of these people are complaining about. It's a great dance beat, simple and funny song. The fact that Six Flags has used it in their first ad campaign in over 7 years just adds to it's hilarity. The little old man dancing to it busts me up every time I'm lucky enough to catch it on the TV. Here's a clue to those of you whining that you can't stand it.... Turn the radio to another station, change the TV channel or leave the dance club that's smart enough to play this upbeat catchy tune, but for God's sake, quit whining already! No ones holding a gun to your head and making you listen.

4 out of 5 stars What?! Is it really that bad? I don't think so........2002-02-07

In the beginning, I was not much of a techno fanatic until recently, when I went to a nightclub for the first time. There, I saw hundreds of dancers on the dance floor, dancing to this stuff. So, I joined in, had more fun than I have had in a long time, and the rest is history.

Anyway, I bought this CD based on the fact that I was gradually learning to like the Party Time 2002 compilation I had bought a few months earlier. At first, I thought this album was quite a waste of my money because the songs became boring and even annoying at times, so I pretty much shelved the album. Then, after my first nightclub visit, I listened to the compilation a second time, and I discovered that many of the songs on the album were the same songs that the DJ played at the nightclub I went to. I actually wanted to start dancing when I heared the compilation a second time.

As some of the earlier reviews say, some of the songs do not fit together very well. For example, I still feel that "Pure Aviation" and "Purgatory" weaken the mood. These two songs seem like 12th or 15th century church hymns accompanied by techno instruments. At one point, the solid bass beat disappears for quite a while, and all that is left is chanting. Eventually, the beat comes back, but by that time, I would have already lost interest in the song. Of course, Escape follows up with ATB, DJ Jurgen, and Darude; and when he does, the energy emerges once again. Still, I find myself pressing the skip button once I get to those two songs.

Disregarding those songs, this compilation really bangs. I especially like the song, "You See The Trouble With Me". The blending of the disco style with the techno style really makes this song an exciting one. I also like "Above The Clouds", "Higher & Higher", "Bang", & "Take Your Time". Escape also includes "Sandstorm" and "Stomp To My Beat" -- both really popular dance grooves. Being a DJ myself, and knowing how difficult the job can be, I must commend DJ Escape for his efforts. Overall, this album is quite entertaining.

Even though some of the songs do not go with the mood very well, this compilation contains lots of energy within it. I am sure that people who are nightclub regulars will enjoy it very much. However, I would not recommend this to anyone who has never heared techno before. Before they buy this album, I would recommend that they attend a nightclub party first. After all, when an open-minded person is surrounded by a bunch of "party animals" who are losing their minds over music like this, how could he or she not enjoy it?

2 out of 5 stars What's the rave about?.......2001-10-30

I was looking forward to this cd huge cause of all the rave and comericails i heard for it. It came down to a big disapointment when i played it. TOO MANY LYRICS, NOT ENOUGH FLOW! That's what it all comes down to. If you bought all the other cd's that you want then go ahead if not i know there is better stuff out there.

...

1 out of 5 stars Don't judge a CD by its cover.......2001-04-19

At first glance, a dance fanatic would jump nearly two buildings high. Just take a close look: you have several smash club hits by artists such as Darude, ATB, DJ Jurgen, Vengaboys, Love Bite, etc. Based on your own personal judgement, you'd probably say to yourself, "how could I go wrong? This CD is full of great tunes. And there's more songs on here that I HAVEN'T heard that are most probably just as good, if not better."

Well, my advice to you is not to judge a CD by its cover. Sure, that bright green cover is pretty eye-catching, and SANDSTORM is on there, but asides from all that, this CD is horribly mixed and contains no flow. DJ-mixed albums pride themselves on making tracks flow together in order to keep the beat moving. However, the song selection and order they are played on this album is so terrible that it's apparent "Party Time 2001" is CHEESE spewed forth with the sole purpose of selling itself to the most gullible of consumers.

Need I say more? This double-disc set deserves a pitiful one star rating. Beware of all future Groovilicious releases. (...)

- the enlightened one

3 out of 5 stars Too much talk, too disco.......2001-03-24

I was looking forward to this based on the reviews, but be warned that most tracks are lyric-heavy and very disco. Eartha Kitt's "Where Is My Man" is pretty cool. "Sandstorm" is great, though you're probably sick of it if you listen to grooveradio.com. Should have gone with my gut instinct and not bought an album named "Party Time".

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS CD!!.......2001-01-09

this cd is really tight and has been practically the only cd i've been listening to since i got it. its got songs that club hoppers and ravers will like.. many of the songs are lyrical and will appeal to those that like more club stuff. disk 2 is my favorite and has stuff that me and my girls like to groove to.

3 out of 5 stars Decent Dance.......2006-01-21

The mixes on this double CD are great if you are familiar with the songs.

4 out of 5 stars Definitely packed with party tracks-and some rareties on CD!.......2005-10-22

An overall note is that quite a few of these songs were mixed with worn out vinyl and pops and cracks are very noticeable. A shame for a CD...but onto the music.

Disc 1 begins with funky disco house, and this trend leads right into "take me Love me" by Friburn & Urik in a completely unnecessary bouncy house mix-since the flawless hardhouse mix appears later on in the track list. It's followed by a classic, Big Love by Pete Heller. After that upbeat fix, things get dark and instrumental and then high pitched but thumpin with "Baby Wants to Ride", and "The Launch" is in the same vain, a definite crowd pleaser. The time is ripe for peak hour diva vocals, and Kim English delivers with Unspeakable Joy, which segues into another classic, "Gotta Dance Disco," a funky male vocal house track with some hard riffs. Now, the earlier problem is rectified with Friburn & Urik's hardhouse "Take Me Love Me", a vinyl only single that clocks in at a splendid 8 minutes and 19 seconds on this CD!!!! But oddly, the remix has been...well...REMIXED right in the middle for a short period, with a different drum track and everything before returning to its original form! Weird. Even so, it flows perfectly into the thunderess thunderpuss mix of "If it don't fit", which is, unfortunately, only half its original massive length. This segues into the peak hour hit Skin by Charlotte.

Disc 2 begins with 2 diva anthems, the pretty "Anything for love" by Reina, and the slammin' friburn & urik mix of Vicki Sue Robinson-another track only on vinyl, and here we're given 9 minutes of it! This is followed by two huge, cheesy hits by the vengaboys-good for a party though, although some people will recognize "we like to party" as the song that freaky old guy dances to in the Great Adventure commercials. The next track is along the same lines of this happy bouncy house, which makes the next track a bit of a shock-the hard and mean "People Get Down." "Do it again" is the catchy instrumental you can't get away from. A couple more peak hour instrumentals follow, and then we crash into a huge diva anthem with "Do it Properly"-nearly 9 minutes long! Oddly, such a hard track segues into a funky house track! Of course, Powerhouse had a number 1 club hit with this, but it's just a really bad sequence of tracks. The final track is pretty much the same style as Powerhouse with a male vocal, so things end on a light note.

The best thing this disc has done is given us fairly long versions of most of the peak hour tracks on here, including several you can't readily find on CD, making it a good buy for dance collectors.Track times:

3 out of 5 stars Big mainstream dance hits-but so many edits.......2005-11-27

In an effort to go completely mainstream like so many other generic dance mixes out there, Groovilicious and DJ Escape jammed 16 hugely popular tracks onto one disc, giving us less than 5 minutes of most of them. They must have assumed this would be a huge seller, because this disc was subtitled "part 1" and the back of the disc says to look for part 2 in February 2003. Part 2 never happened.... Avid dance collectors aren't going to find any rare gems on here. Track times:

    1. Safe from Harm (original mix)...narcotic thrust (5:40)
    2. it's love trippin (goldtrix mix)...andrea brown (4:34)

    7. hungry (tiesto mix)...kosheen (4:12)
    8. punk (main mix)...ferry corsten (3:45)

5 out of 5 stars Superb, skillfull mixing.......2003-05-17

I'm surprised at the mediocre reviews for this CD. I think this is one of the best mixed CD's I have ever purchased. The mixing is absolutely flawless. My favorite mix of all time in fact is between "Something" and "I Feel So Fine."

If you don't like the popular songs that are on it, THEN DON'T BUY IT! LOL!!! For those who bought it and were disappointed with the song selections, you're [wrong] because the song list was available to you before you bought the CD. When the CD came out in September of last year, they were brand new songs. Mad props to Escape for picking out over 15 songs that would end up so popular.

I can't wait till Part 2 comes out.

5 out of 5 stars Party Time 2003 is awesome.......2003-03-11

I enjoy the Party Time seris because DJ Escape is awesome at what he does, and the cds always have the best chosen music. I never hesitate to buy the seris... Can't wait for Part 2!

3 out of 5 stars Great music mix, but not the mixes we are used to.......2003-01-23

I wish they had a 3.5 star rating, because that is what this CD deserves. A great compilation of current dance hits, yet the some of the mixes are not what is played on the airwaves. I have to agree with one of the other reviewers that this CD needs a bit of work, but it's still a bit better than acceptable.

You may better spend your money on Dance Party 2003. That is a far superior disc and has the mixes you've more than likely heard and will EXPECT!

3 out of 5 stars Escape is Good, But the CD Could Use Work!!.......2002-10-24

Dj Escape does a fantastic job mixing in and out of every song on the track list. But if I would have known that every song on the Disc was going to be music that is played and heard everywhere, I would have held off and not even bothered! But, on the lighter side, Escape brings another overlooked and underrated groove, "Punk::Ferry Corsten"!!!!!! Beautiful song, and I flipped when I heard it!! I set the CD Player on Repeat for at least two days! Wonderful uplifting Tech-Trance!!!! The rest of the CD is just plain 'ol Dance. :(

4 out of 5 stars DJ Escape gives us a commercial heavy greatest hits..........2005-10-08

One thing about Escape's mixes, he never gets experimental on his mixes-always playing it safe with the popular stuff. So it's appropriate for him to mix the Party Time series each year. Since it's a party, you want listeners to be familiar with the tracks, and even be able to sing along. That's what you can do with these to hit mixes of dance favorites, many of them in long versions, and both discs filling just about every minute of space. Definitely a good buy for the price. I thought about giving Party Time 5 stars until I realized that I wasn't crazy about Disk 1. Disk 1 was a bit too "disco" for my tastes. Disk 2, however, has some of the best songs ever created! I am very happy that I bought Party Time 2002.

5 out of 5 stars Party Time 2002 is a CD that kicks.......2002-02-16

I love all the tracks on Party Time 2002! DJ Escape does a really good job of mixing the 27 songs together. My favorites: That Kid Chris/Jungle, Journey to Uranus/Johnny Vicious, Stranger In My House/Tamia, and Know You Can/Whatever, Girl. This is a great set of CDs to listen to when you're going down the highway, partyin at a dance club, or just sitting in your house. I hope DJ Escape makes another 2 CD set like this one. You actually can't tell when the songs start or end! The tracks are smoothly mixed together. I suggest you go out and buy this CD!
