About the Artist
J Kendall grew up in Chicago where his love of music began when he started to play bass in his church choir.

After going to college(studying engineering) he was exposed to and played other types of music including R&B, Jazz and Rock.

After graduating, he worked in the corporate world for several years. During this time, he recorded jingles and produced songs for other artists. He then decided to make a solo move into the music business. Leaving the corporate world, he worked part time as a personal trainer, while spending the rest of his days writing, producing and recording 'Make Your Move'.

The result is an album of both ballad and mid-tempo tunes with beautiful melodies and catchy hooks that draw on all of his musical influences.

The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

Captain & Tennille - Still Happy Together.......2006-10-10

"Make Your Move" was a departure of sorts for Captain and Tennille: A new image and record company and another #1 hit (Do That To Me One More Time) make this a very enjoyable adult contemporary album and their most coeshive album until "Keeping Our Love Warm". All the songs here run over 4 minutes. The highlights are the Toni Tennille penned "Deep In The Dark" and "Do That To Me One More Time" plus the far-out version of "Happy Together" (a total trip).

This is an excellent re-mastered version of their 1979 album. I always wondered how C&T wound up on the disco-heavy Casablanca label. Toni explains it in the brief (but great) liner notes: the label prez assured them they'd have another hit. Well, they did.

What we get is some of the best pop music of the late 70s. The eight tracks include the #1 "Do That To Me One More Time" plus the shoulda been bigger singles "Love On A Shoestring" and "Happy Together (A Fantasy)" . "Baby You Still Got It" has got to be the best ballad Toni's written after "Do That To Me One More Time". The inventive casbah arrangement on "Happy Together" is over-the-top but fun. As the Amazon review states, this is a more adult offering from C&T. Fans will be thrilled and those not familiar with the duo might be surprised.

The disc itself has a clear, even sound. I have C&T's "Scrapbook" CD from Germany (which includes many of the songs from "Make Your Move") that seems to have distorted bass on a few sections. Nothing like that here. The booklet includes session players for each track, Toni's liner notes and pics of the original Casablanca releases -- including the 8-track tape. My only gripe is that the jewel case is housed in a slipcase cover that has the original cover art while the booklet has a different picture taken from the same photo sessions. No lyrics are re-printed.

Overall, it's nice to finally have "Make Your Move" on disc...and it's about time.

The Captain & Toni: Making A Move.......2005-10-28

This album represents a significant shift in the career of Captain & Tennille. Daryl lost the captain's hat and Toni turned blonde--successfully shedding the "bubble gum pop" image that plagued them. There is serious musicianship on this album: saxophones, piano, guitar, and plenty of music solos. Toni Tennille wrote 4 of the 8 tracks on this album, including the million-seller, "Do That To Me One More Time". Tennille's vocals and the musical production on this album are top notch. Though there are only 8 tracks on this album, all of the songs are 5 minutes or over (with the exception of "Do That To Me One More Time", which is just over 4 minutes).

This album reached the top 30 in album sales in 1979 and 1980, with the help from the singles, "Happy Together (A Fantasy)" and "Love On A Shoestring". Toni's vocals are superb throughout the album and demonstrate, as one reviewer has noted, "why she made such a connection" with the pop audience. There's a touch of soul in her vocals that may surprise those whose only outing with Captain & Tennille has been "Love Will Keep Us Together" or "Muskrat Love".

Suprise cut: "Never Make A Move Too Soon", featuring an all-out party/jam session feel. This song starts out slowly, but quickly builds to a rocking climax as Toni sings about a lover who "turns up found" when she "strikes it rich".

Pure pop gold. Highly recommended.

Absolutely first-rate music!.......2005-03-31

This is music-making of the highest calibre and a great selection of songs. Ernestine is so soulful in her approach and the rhythm section lay down incredible grooves with Ray driving from below and Monty delivering some remarkable solos as in "Old Folks" or "Poor Butterfly". This is also model comping- colorful, rhythmically alive but without getting in the way. This music is incredibly overlooked and should be in every jazz lover's library. Also excellent from the same period is "Sunshine" also on Concord which is for now out of print. Highly recommended for anyone who just loves good music.

One of my all-time favourites.......2003-10-06

My uncle presented this album to me when I was about 15 and becoming a serious piano player. It blew me away. I heard the piano being played in a way that affected me for the rest of my life. Monte Alexander is one of the best jazz players around. This is happy, clean jazz that doesn't twist your brain into a knot. This recording features vocals, piano, stand-up bass, and drums. That's it - clean, simple, perfect. When I wore out the record, I bought the cd and I just cherish it, along with my Vince Guaraldi Christmas cd.

Good moments.......2007-03-16

"Where's Your Cup?" is surprisingly a major-label jazz release. You have to wonder if Columbia knew what it was going to get! It sounds like the other Threadgill I've heard, it doesn't seem like a departure. The instrumentation is slightly odd (for jazz, not Henry Threadgill), there's accordion instead of piano. Beside Henry Threadgill's alto sax, you have an electric guitarist, electric bassist and drums. "100 Year Game" is a strong start. The band plays a reggae rhythm, which is unusual in jazz; I've only heard Medeski Martin & Wood try it. The melody and soloing are memorable, and towards the end the band speeds up before bringing it all back down for the ending. "Laughing Club" is another good one. It starts off fairly diffuse, and stays free.

The reason I give the CD 3 stars is because with the title track, song 3, the album settles into a groove I'm not very fond of. The remaining songs sound like the songs on "Everybodys Mouth's A Book" that I don't like very much (I think overall "Book" is a much stronger CD). The songs are somewhat slow, not just in tempo, but the bass plays whole notes and the band plays unsettling chords. Nothing really resolves. This may be great for some people, and it's fine in smaller doses, but approximately 50 minutes of a 66 minute CD is too much.

A Wonderful though Strange CD.......2000-09-22

Threadgill can always be counted on for odd instrumental combinations and this is certainly no exception. While some of his Cds are all over the place this one is quite coherent.

Threadgill employes an excellent band including guitarist Brandon Ross and Drummer J T Lewis (Check out their band Harriet Tubman) and the great Accordian/Harmonium player Tony Cedras who has also done excellent work with Pharoah Sanders.

All the compositions are lengthy (most around 8-10 minutes) and quite strong. 100 Year Old Game is a favorite for me.

If you're new to Treadgill, I'm not sure if there is a good place to start, but this is probably as good as any since it is the most readily available of his works.

No one like him.......2000-05-24

Henry Threadgill is one of the most innovative and personal composers in jazz history. He's always been conscious of the jazz tradition, more than even someone like Wynton Marsalis [his early band, Air, was devoted to play pre- and 1920s era jazz in a modern context], and he's been mercurial in stretching himself and that tradition. After his seven member Sextett, and his two-tuba band Very Very Circus comes this stellar group. This should be his most popular and accessible record, and it's still uncomprimising.

Under a sheen of a great, tight almost rocking group sound, Threadgills tunes stretch into unexpected melodic and structural areas, even the ballads, which are lovely and expressive. The players are never afraid to extend themselves into some free territory, if that's what is called for, but the means and purpose is always clear. If you like adventurous modern jazz and rock, you will LOVE this record!

interesting, different.......2000-01-06

I am still getting used to this work. It is very interesting and different. I love the bass work - great sound. I think this is a CD I will continue to come back to. I ca't say that I just love it through and through but it has captured my attention and imagination. I suppose that is saying quite a bit.

the best avante guarde jazz - right now.......1998-12-29

This CD shows that jazz is still a living, breathing, sophisticated, monster, changing the rules that music thought were unbreakable. Of all of Threadgill CD's I have heard this one is certainly one of the most daring. His instrumentation, harmonies, and melodies, all have at first a very unsettling quality to them, but after awhile there haunting beauty and emotional intensity will make you change your perception of how music you think music should sound.

This CD is melodic, meaningful, and fairly original. Their sound is quite unique which is hard to achieve in rock. I believe the Band will make it far. I get the same feeling when I see them live as I do rocking out this sick album. I promote this band 100%. They are one of my favorites of all time.

The album is great. It's a fresh original sound with some riff heavy songs which still contain much melody, and also a coupler of slower songs. Album is produced well. Drew does a good job with his vocals. Check out this album

Something fresh.......2005-07-14

I've been able to see these guys live before I bought the album, and they put on a show. Most bands, however, aren't able to recapture that magic on a studio album. These guys took me by quite a surprise with the energy they were able to capture on the album. Tracks like "Aye Julian" and "Girl in Mexico" simply exuberate an energy that has been lost in a lot of the cookie cutter bands of today, which quite nicely flow into the melodic "Paper Airplane Machine". Definitely worth checking out.

A Band To Watch.......2005-07-14

I purchased this album recently and am enjoying it more with each play! Several of the tracks are single worthy, such as "Aye Julian", and I fully expect to be hearing them on radio waves nationwide. This band is undoubtedly going places, and I am thrilled to have caught the beginnings of that. Friends and coworkers are enjoying the album as well, each with their own favorites.
The musical stylings cross many genres but settle nicely into a rock format. I am acutely impressed with the quality and substance of the lyrics. These guys are genuises!
