A Talent Lost Way Too Soon!.......2007-06-16

I was very surprised and saddened to hear about the death of Hi-Five's lead singer Tony Thompson on June 1, 2007. I always thought he was a very talented young singer who probably should have been more well-known than he apparently was. Hi-Five only made 3 albums in the early 90's. Tony Thompson releases his one and only solo cd called "Sexsational" in 1995. This greatest hits cd was released in 1994. The producers who they worked with through those years included here: Teddy Riley, A young R. Kelly, JOE & Keith Miller, Timmy Allen, Eric Foster White, and Art & Rhythm. Riley produced their first #1 single "I Like The Way (The Kissing Game) in 1990. My personal favorites are: She's Playing Hard To Get, Quality Time, Never Should Have Let You Go, Unconditional Love, and non-single She Said. The reason I'm reviewing this Hi-Five instead of other ones, is because it includes 3 new songs (at the time) that I believe few have probably heard. I don't believe any of these songs were released as singles, and I can't recall ever hearing them on the radio or ever seeing a video for them. The 3 songs are: Birthday Girl, What Are You Doing Tonight, and That Was Then, This Is Now. I consider these 3 songs to be maybe the strongest songs Hi-Five ever made, especially What Are You Doing Tonight, which is my favorite among the 3, and one of my favorites period. Unfortunately the group lost a few members after their 2nd cd was released. One left for spiritual reasons I believe, while the other was injured in a serious automobile accident. The group added 2 new members to replace them, but the group was never quite the same, even though the material was probably even better. 7 hit singles over the mere span of 3 years in quite remarkable. Other than the teenage girls that screamed for them and loved them at the time, the group didn't experience the kind of success I thought worthy of them, Tony Thompson again in particular. Tony died way too young, and I always thought he had a chance to return when the time was right. Unfortunately that isn't gonna happen now. Tony may no longer be with us, but his music and videos will live on. Praise to Hi-Five! R.I.P Tony Thompson!"She said Tony, no one's gonna love like I do. Think I believed her? Well I did! EVEN THOUGH I DONT HAVE THE PHYSICAL ALBUM, I HAVE HEARD ALL OF THE SONGS ONCE IN MY LIFETIME AND I MUST SAY THAT I AM VERY IMPRESSED WITH THIS COLLECTION. THIS IS TRULY A GREATEST HITS FOR THIS GROUP! THEY DID RELEASE ANOTHER ALBUM ENTITLED "THE RETURN" INDEPENDENTLY, BUT I DONT THINK THAT NOR ANYTHING THEY DID GOT MUCH CREDIT FOR THEIR SKILLS. This is a good collection of 50 hits, b-sides and album tracks by The Dave Clark Five. The only US hit that is missing is "You Must Have Been a Beautiful Baby". There are a few UK hits missing, but that is understandable, since this collection was designed for the US market. The songs are in mono, with the exception of the last three songs which are in stereo. Most of the songs here are great, so I highly recommend getting this collection (if you can find it).

Review number 42. Total of fifty solid must-have British Invasion tracks of the Dave Clark Five's work on two CD's. Some say this five piece could HAVE easily been the Beatles. Tunes that'll never grow old are "Bits And Pieces", the rousing "Do You Love Me", "Anyway You Want It", "All Night Long", "I Miss You", the timeless "Catch Us If You Can", "Over And Over" (I've had female friends go nuts when I had this song on my answering machine) and "Maze Of Love". That's just for straters. I don't think there's a single bad song here. Most highly recommended.

HARD DRIVING ROCK AND ROLL THAT HAS STOOD THE TEST OF TIME. MIKE SMITH MAY BE THE GREATEST ROCK SINGER OF ALL TIME. "DO YOU LOVE ME" IS MY PERSONAL #1 R&R SONG OF ALL TIME. THEY MAY HAVE PUT TOO MANY OBSCURE AND LESSER KNOWN SONGS ON THIS COLLECTION, BUT I'M HAPPY THAT ALL THE BIG HITS HAVE BEEN INCLUDED. WITH THEIR RECENT NOMINATION TO THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME, PERHAPS A MODERN RENAISSANCE IS IN ORDER FOR THIS MOSTLY UNHERALDED ENGLISH INVASION BAND.

This Makes Me Glad All Over!.......2006-12-05

The DC-5 charged onto the music scene in 1964 on the heels of the Beatles' first U.S. tour. The DC-5 gave the Beatles a run for their money and, as one of the pioneer groups during the British Invasion, the Beatles and DC-5 were considered top contenders in the music scene. (I still think the Beatles are the top band).

Still, the DC-5 do not disappoint. Standard classics like 1964's "Glad All Over," "Bits & Pieces," are sure to delight as are more obscure gems such as 1964's "No Time to Lose" and the early 1966 treasure, "Try Too Hard." I just love "Somebody Find a New Love," which is my favorite DC5 song. The opening of "At the Scene" sounds a lot like Paul Revere & the Raiders' "Just Like Me." Still, I love the Raiders and I love the DC5, so the whole thing works for me!

Don't try too hard to get this - just order it now and enjoy it. Gear up your cooooooool 1963 Ford Falcon and enjoy those Cool Classics! I love it!

They are known for 'In The Still Of The Night" but listen to "I'll Be Seeing You" and "To The Aisle". You will play them over and over again.

Though this group could be concidered a one hit wonder group, they had more material than any other one hit wonder......I especially like the songs "I Aint Gonna Dance" and "You Can Count On Me"

Great Doo Wop and R&B.......2005-02-17

The 5 Satins are probably best known for the classic "In The Still Of The Night" but they had a lot more to offer, as this CD demonstrates.
Plenty of classic Doo Wop here including their hit "To The Aisle" and there is some great R&B too.
My only complaint is the minimal liner notes but that's just quibbling.
All the tunes are the original versions and the recording quality is just fine.

George's goof.......2003-10-21

Just now read Mr. O'Leary of Canada's commentary re my original review contained here of this great album, (submitted many moons ago, which shows how much of my life force and attention is given over to this stuff) wherein I lament the exclusion of two singles from the original album. Just for the record, I am not an "oldies" wannabe. I grew up with this music and I also own today the original vinyl 78 of this specific album, so I know whereof I speak. (said album featuring the exact cover photo as the CD)

The reason for the comment in my initial review was that I hoped to get a CD version which duplicated the original album and included these two neat titles. And George, if you aren't familiar with them, I suggest that you check out Master Tapes volume 2 here on Amazon, where you will find the items in question. Yes, they did record them and yes, the songs were on this original album. By the way, the original only had 14 cuts; besides the 2 aforementioned songs, "Again" and "Moonlight and I" were also deleted, and 10 additional songs added. These last 2 also probably didn't chart, so they don't count either, right?

The suggestion going forward is not to judge another reviewer, unless ye also be judged. I don't worry about what "charted"; I don't make a career of statistical analysis or chronological music forensics; I just care about the music I truly know. And George, I know this stuff. Bottom line; it's a great album in either new or or old format.

Everything That I Expected And More.......2002-12-13

I am extremely pleased with this CD. 24 songs by the Five Satins on one CD at such a bargain price. If you are a fan of music from the 1950's and early 1960's, this CD is for you. If you like "Rhythm and Blues", this CD is for you. The great vocal harmony by the Five Satins is well captured by the excellent sound quality of this CD.

The Greatest brass ensemble..........2007-01-19

Philip Jones brass ensemble shows you musicality on a high level. The feelings they are playing with are suberb...music is feelings, not technical.

Nothing better than this!.......2006-07-11

There are many brass recordings available today with ensembles which are even technically more advanced, but nothing can compare with Philip Jones, because the PJBE is not only pure precision playing, it's musicality too and it's smart arranging. Jones understands how to use the characteristics of each instrument. He lets room for Tuba or Horn too, its not just Trumpet always playing the big parts like Empire Brass does.

Welcome Back PJBE.......2001-10-19

It is ironic that London/Decca waited until many of the important members of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble were dead before finally releasing this collection of highlights from the ensemble's considerable catalog. Don't misunderstand me! I am thankful for this substantial 2 cd set. For fans of the PJBE there is real cause for celebration; and for those who are just discovering the work of this important brass ensemble, you are in for a treat.

The remastering is first rate and you can't beat the 2-fer pricing. Get this set while its available because the wait for more will at best be a long one. Thankfully, I still have most of the PJBE recordings on vinyl and a good turntable for playing them. But I would still be near the head of the line to snatch up any subsequent reissues. Years ago I saw several of their recordings on cd, but foolishly passed on them, thinking they would be in circulation for awhile. Silly me. Like I said, grab this before they post the infamous notice "no longer available."

When the PJBE made it's first American tour back in the 70s I was already a huge fan. I went to hear them play, never expecting the concert to sound as good as the recordings. They opened with the Tylman Susato Renaissance Suite and their playing immediately blew away any Memorex memories of their recordings. Unfortunately, we will never again hear live such virtuosity and musicianship. The recordings DO serve as a fine memory of the first and foremost brass ensemble.

Great start! Now where is the rest?.......2001-05-31

I have always been a huge fan of the Philip Jones Brass Ensemble. They set a very high standard of playing and the recordings, most of which are not available on CD, are excellent.

Where are their landmark recordings of such works as the Hindemith works for brass ensembles: Concert music for strings and brass, Morgenmusik for brass, Concert music for piano, brass and harps which they played flawlessly?

Where is their outstanding recording of the Gunther Schuller Symphony for Brass?

Please, Decca, give us more of the full course, not merely the teasers and encores.

Great selection, but quality could be better........2006-12-26

First off, this cd has some of my favorite classical songs on it. The songs themselves are great, and many are instantly recognizable for all those who didn't know their names.

The recording quality of this cd isn't great. For most people with average ears and average hardware, that won't make a difference. For the extermely intent listeners, the recording quality isn't great, and, while I would recommend any of the music on here to anyone, I just wouldn't reccomend this particular cd to those who high-powered hardware and are picky.

The sonic abomination.

The hell spawn that was released by Anka onto AM radio in 1974 and makes us envy the deaf today.

Yes, I am speaking of Paul Anka & Odia Coates duet "(You're) Having My Baby."

Upon Anka's release of this atrocity, William Shatner need never fear again that his "Mr. Tambourine Man" cover will go down in history as the world's worst song.

Despite his other achievements, Anka buried his credibility with this repulsive treacle. Even Frank Sinatra's "Mama Will Bark" has a redeeming note in it, unbearably absent from Anka's sonic turd. It manages to combine the worst features of Captain & Tennille's "Muskrat Love" and the base carnality of any song by Mr. Meat Loaf.

Perhaps George Orwell's prophetic "memory holes" cannot arrive soon enough. Would that we had them now and could confine every copy of this album to the flames, and had the cheap gin to wash the memory of ever hearing it from our damaged grey sludge.

The REAL Reason For This CD!.......2004-02-20

I've read previous reviewers and agree with them. Obviously, Paul Anka has a lot more than 12 hits during his singing career so this is NOT ideal for the Anka fan who would take this collection as an affront.

This is why the CD was made: It was intended for the CASUAL music fan that only wants ONE CD of Paul Anka. That's it! It does have the major highlights from his earlier years to his most recent.

This is one of many reasons why most artists have multiple collections of "Greatest Hits" albums. They play around the song list changing one song and adding another song to another collection. They realize too that they want to make a collection for Anka fans, middle-of-the-road fans, and casual fans. They claim that the songs are originals or that they are re-mastered originals, or re-mastered re-recordings of the originals.....Sound confusing? Yes it is!

Paul Anka Gold.......2003-04-27

What I want to know is does anyone know of a CD collection that contains Paul's original ABC hits from 1957-61? There used to be a label called Sire which had such a collection but unless one can find it as vinyl in some used record store, its unavailable. Its a shame, because the CD thats on my left, the "21 golden hits" version on RCA are all remakes, which sound terrible. Even Paul, I've read, regretted making it.

Curb--as always, the Worst Reissue Label In The Universe.......2002-10-08

In which the record company implies that the artist has only turned out 12 songs worth compiling in five decades. Does this disc even run longer than 30 minutes? The dumbness within the dumbness is that these songs actually span about 30 years. Which according to most number systems is kinda not five decades.

If you're this interested, go for Rhino's 30th Anniversary Collection. For five bucks more, you get 24 hits instead of the 12 Curb parcels out. All but the last three tracks here are there as well. Frustratingly, Curb manages to include one key hit (to these ears, anyway) not on the Rhino set--"Hold Me Til The Morning Comes" is a great ballad (to these ears, anyway) featuring Peter Cetera on backing vocals. It nicked the Top 40 (peaking at #40) in 1983, making Anka one of the few artists to hit in the 50's, 60's, 70's, and 80's. Its presence here justifies, unfortunately, the existence of this skimpy thing.

Where are the rest?.......2002-06-29

For the most part, I am pleased with this compilation. Paul Anka has one of the most distinctive voices in pop music and his popularity has stood the test of time. Each major hit on this CD is a piece of pop music history. So, why do I only give this CD three stars. I find it hard to believe that a man of Mr. Anka's distinction can not get a more comprehensive CD to showcase his talents and the musical changes he went through during the span of his career. This CD says FIVE DECADES. So, where are the rest of the songs? This CD is missing major Anka tunes from his Columbia, RCA and Buddha years. His ABC-Paramount years are covered fairly well with his major hits. The United Artists years are also well represented, although this CD should have included "Happier" and "Closing Doors" from his standout LP "The Painter" (why that LP is not available on CD boggles my mind. It is perhaps his best next to "Feelings" which is on CD and does contain as a bonus track, "Happier." But nowhere can you get the best track on that LP - "Closing Doors.") His Buddha years are totally ignored on this set and his major hit "Jubilation" during those Buddha years is an obvious missing track in my eyes. Columbia songs such as "Second Chance" with Michael McDonald is also missing. "Love Makes The World Go Round" during the RCA years is not here. I could on and on and I'm sure others have favorites which are not included in this compilation. That is my point - a man of Mr Anka's caliber deserves a better, more rounded salute to his career and FIVE DECADES should have included more songs from each decade. One major plus with this set is the inclusion of the moving and emotional Anka tune "Freedom For the World." All shortcomings of this CD aside, that one song is worth the price of this CD and, as for as I know, is the only CD on which this favorite Anka song of mine is included. So, go ahead and buy this CD in hopes that someone will soon decide to give Mr. Anka a better CD package.

What Time Is It?.......2005-12-05

I was a little boy, but I remember my sisters (who were teens) played this record "What Time Is It". I could not stay away from the record player every time that song was played. Even the flip "Begging You Please" was just as hot. This CD is one of the best doo-wop cd's. My favorite is "Never Never". They were on Tv this weekend and they still "Got it". You won't be dissapointed.

Underated Doo-Wop group.......2005-06-16

Tremendous group with great harmony, lead singer (Eugene Pitt), sing-a-long tunes. All 14 tunes are great. I was too young to appreciate their music in the late 50's and early 60's but glad I discovered them now.

Those "boys" can sing up a storm. Where other Doo-Wop groups have one or two great hits on an album this one contains most all of the best hits.

Saw a 1999 video of their performance in Pittsburgh and influenced me to purchase their hits. They are still "jumpin", "jiving", and "fivin". What a great tribute to the music industry.

Fabulous group from the late 50's & 60's and still going strong. Won't be disappointed with this CD with hits like, My True Story, Begging You, These Golden Rings and What Time Is It. Their only missing hit not on this CD is I'm A Happy Man. Eugene Pitt and The Jive Five, it doesn't get any better!

Perry is ALWAYS awesome, but there's a better way to hear him........2007-01-11

What can I say? This album removes some of the great tracks on "Street Talk" and replaces them with songs which aren't quite as good, then calls it "Greatest Hits". Not my idea of greatest hits really. The mish-mash rearrangement of tracks doesn't hold together as well as Street Talk either. The song-order seems off, in my opinion. No doubt the fault of some exec, rather than someone who actually cares about such things...

I *STRONGLY* suggest you buy "Street Talk" and "Love of Strange Medicine" if you want to hear all the *great* Perry (solo) songs.
Don't get me wrong, Perry is always awesome, but this collection isn't as good as the original album(s).

NO LONGER OUT OF PRINT! NO NEED FOR BIG BUCKS!.......2007-01-02

This CD was re-issued, along with the entire Journey & Steve Perry catalog, in November 2006. All CD's were remastered and many have additonal tracks, including this one: It now has an 18th song added to the new version.

It is now just titled Greatest Hits.

So, this disc was a Seller's bonanza while it was OOP, but there's no reason any longer to pay anything more than ten smackeroos for it.

Who's crying now ???.......2006-11-05

I am for wasting my money on this cd. The only good stuff on this cd is from his excellent album Street Talk. The rest of the stuff isn't even fit to sing in the shower, which is the only place Steve Perry should have sung these. Steve Perry has one the best voices ever recorded but most of these songs were just painful to listen to. A total disappointment if you alraedy have Street Talk and if you don't get that CD instead, he reallly shines on that one!

Steve Perry is very talented vocalist far beyond Journey!.......2006-10-09

First of all I'm a great Journey Fan, and even after Steve Perry leaving the band, I still respected them. Steve Auguri, the new singer is very talented and fits right in with Journey. But at the same time if you haven't realized, Perry's solowork is one of the great work in his career. If you are a true Journey fan, and still looking for additional Perry's fabulous tune...check this album out. You won't go wrong. I listen to it everyday in my car and I'm so happy I have this as a my new collection. Further, if offers several unreleased songs that you will appreciate more. I just hope someday Perry gets back into music recording and touring ...

Just what I wanted... the smoothing and heart pumping sound of Steve Perry's voice and music. Only negative thing about the CD is the cover. Would like to see that "Perry" smile instead of the relaxed collapsed pose.

The Ventures are the most successful instrumental group of the rock era, having sold over 50 million records since 1960. Their worldwide popularity continues today, drawing huge crowds to their concerts. The live performances included in this collection were recorded between 1990 and 2002, and were taken mostly from their very successful tours of Japan. First CD 3 Stars Second CD 5 Stars.......2007-05-04

Most of the songs on the Second CD & House of the Rising Sun on the first CD have Nokie Edwards on lead which makes a BIG difference. While Bob Bogle & Jerry McGee are very good, Nokie's guitar playing is on a much higher level. Even today at age 72 Nokie still has the chops. He was Buck Owens orginal lead guitar player (Pre-Don Rich) & while is first love has always been CW Music, surf pays the bills! i would concur the mid 1960's LIVE Japan concert has more energy, they are better players today. How the Ventures could NOT be in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame is unbelieveable!!!

Its good but somehow lacks the punch from their sixties live performances.......2006-09-09

Although this double album has very good recordings and clear sound, for me this compilation of live performances (from 1999 to 2002)don't have the same energy and punch from the early 60's. If you are new to The Ventures I rather recommend "The Ventures Live in Japan '65".
