Amazon.com essential recording

The pain of a protracted legal battle with his former manager and the release of being allowed to record again after a three-year layoff are equally apparent from the piercing hard rock and harsh lyrical content of Darkness on the Edge of Town. Betrayal and hard work that comes to naught are the primary subjects on his mind here, evidenced by songs such as "Adam Raised a Cain," "Factory," and "Streets of Fire." Elsewhere, there are signs of hope or at least the possibility of outrunning your problems ("Racing in the Street," "The Promised Land," "Prove It All Night"). But mostly, these are songs about exorcising some serious demons, and from the sound of things, Springsteen's loud, lonesome howl and blistering guitar work went a long way toward making him whole again. This is angry art, made by someone pushed to his absolute limit and more than ready to push back. --Daniel Durchholz

5 out of 5 stars A good Rock album, regardless if you are a Springsteen Fan.......2007-07-27

I am not a huge fan of Bruce Springsteen. I think most of his work after "Tunnel of Love" is horrid, yet even if you dont happen to like his music anymore, its really hard not to like the dark and edgy "Darkness on the Edge of Town". This is not a typical Springsteen album, and sure there are some slower paced material with a more "Whiny" Bruce, but this is tolarable, condidering the lyrical content is so strong, and the emotions run high on this album. Even though I am not familer with any of his material after "Tunnel of Love" this is the best of the bunch, and even though "Born to Run" put him on the map, I think this hits harder and it a better album. If you are just a causual fan, this is a great place to start, and even if you arent a fan, this is a great Rock album to have. In fact its better then great, its Outstanding! Five stars to Bruce for this classic. (you also get some great guitar playing from Bruce, with some short but sweet solos, and some decent drumming here, two things that seem to be missing on a lot of Springsteens Work, espically the newer songs that I have heard. I havent heard them all, but what I have heard does not even come close to this) ENJOY

2 out of 5 stars A major letdown.......2007-07-08

This was the album that got me to stop buying Springsteen albums. The first three albums had been great. Born to Run, the album that preceeded this one, was an absolute masterpiece. So I had high hopes when I bought Darkness. They were all dashed.

What happened? You see these reviews here having orgasms about the angry, harsh attitude of the songs. Yay. Notice that nobody talks about the actual *quality* of the music. After there albums where Bruce evidenced great songwriting skill, coming up with wonderful chord progressions, fantastic song structures with unexpected twists, and really showing off his talented band to good effect, on darkness he regresses to simplistic, boring, utterly predictable 3-chord songs. For instance, Badlands: the same ultra-basic 3 chords over and over again, the verse the same as the chorus. Gee Bruce, what'd it take you, 5 whole minutes to think up that one? And THAT song is one of the better on the album! (at least the tune is catchy). There's a few songs which are ok, most are pretty forgettable.

And as for the arrangements and the use of the band, one statistic speaks volumes: Clarence Clemon's magnificent saxaphone plays for about 24 bars *on the whole album* (three short little 8 bar solos, and that's it!).

5 out of 5 stars I love the darkness here..........2007-04-27

This is my favorite Springsteen album. I play it quite often, and the songs are equally angry, sad, poetic, and haunted. Badlands, the title track, and Adam Raised a Cain are brutal and brilliant. Adam especially is a really scorching track. Racing in the Street is one of Bruce's most despairing songs, but it's still quite moving. You can really feel the desperation of the characters in the song. Even the lesser tracks like Factory (a song I like a lot) have a world weariness and power to them that most artists today can't even come close too. The Promised Land is another great Bruce anthem, one of his greatest songs. The cover is really something. It looks like Bruce just woke up, and you have to give him credit for making himself look so average. Most rockers wouldn't do that, because they're so obsessed with their image. I think this is Bruce's best work.

5 out of 5 stars one of his top 3 albums. says me........2007-04-06

springsteen's 1973-1978 years were an amazing run, almost as great as the rolling stones 1968-1972 years. each album that he released in this stretch of time was fantastic. "darkness on the edge of town" is his starkest production from that era. a masterpiece that is intense and dramatic, with a big drum and bass sound, and several of the finest songs in our rock and roll canon. "badlands," "the promised land," "prove it all night," and the title track are all powerful, heavenly rock performances. "adam raised a cain," "something in the night," and "streets of fire," may be less known, perhaps less lauded, but are each great in their own right. the lyrical guitar solo and sax solo on "promised land" are both gorgeous; and the raw, wild telecaster sound of the solo on "streets of fire" is soul-stirring. bruce's voice is uninhibated, soars with emotion and drama, and is tremendous throughout. johnny cash. bob dylan. bruce springsteen: my trio of homegrown american voices that are indispensable (if you want to make it a quartet and throw in billy joe shaver, i won't argue). your life will seem vaguely empty without lots of music from these gentlemen around the house.

5 out of 5 stars A masterpiece from the Boss.......2007-03-21

Perhaps the best album of the 70's. There is no filler on this album. It's quintessential Bruce from start to finish.

Novelist Cormac McCarthy's literary vision of the wild west is given wide-screen treatment by maverick director Billy Bob Thornton and a cast that includes Matt Damon, Penelope Cruz, and Bruce Dern. Professional country music journeyman Marty Stuart has performed with father-in-law Johnny Cash, Earl Scruggs, and Doc Watson, in addition to a successful solo career. In his soundtrack scoring debut, he provides short, meditative instrumental pieces that are subtly explosive--rife as they are with strains of old-school country and bluegrass. Cinematic strings and orchestral percussion add a welcome menacing edge, augmenting the rustic approach without crossing over into a compromised "countrypolitan" sound. If anything, it might be nice to hear these themes extended. As it stands, the 23 listed tracks are covered in a little under 50 minutes, with many of the cuts barely lasting more than a minute or two. They stand as a new genre of cinematic country minimalism. --Rob O'Connor

5 out of 5 stars Great western soundtrack.......2004-02-28

This is a must buy for fans of western soundtracks. It mixes beautifully symphonic music with Guitar music and spices it up all together with a south of the border flavor. Haunting music that will make you want to never take it out of your cd changer. It also
Features two vocal pieces, the first a spanish song sung by the very talented Raul Malo of the country group the mavericks, the second song is a beautiful ballad sung by Marty Stuart. Though I never owned any cd's of Marty Stuart he earns my respect with composing this film score.(cowboy hats off to you Mr.Stuart)

5 out of 5 stars Truly Incredible.......2003-03-12

This album is a masterpiece. Within the first strums of the guitar, you feel as though you are among the southwestern hills. It has immediately become one of my favorites of all-time. The songs are filled with beautiful imagery, enchanting tunes, and haunting melodies. The shortness of the songs in unnoticable, as each song blends into the next, and the album itself serves as one epic journey. It is not meant to be listened to a song at a time, but as a whole. As I said, it is truly incredible. I would recommend it to absolutely anyone.

3 out of 5 stars Oh dear...they've taken their eye off the ball.......2007-01-08

This is not much like their first album (which was a mostly clever, sometimes ham-handed combination of operatic arias and modern electronic instrumentation).

But Shine is pretty much the same ethno-electronica that was pervasive throughout the 90s. Think Deep Forest, Anubian Nights, Enigma, B-Tribe, and even Sting's "Desert Rose". Yawnnnnnnnnnnnn.

Their first album was good mostly because of its orginality (operatic arias are definitely a challenge), but any old fool can slap a "cool" Middle Eastern chant over a modern beat.

What bugs me about both albums is that they don't maintain that singularly operatic quality--it seems to be a sonic delicacy reserved only for a few tracks.

So, with a very few exceptions, this album is a bit contrived.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly beautiful music.......2004-11-29

I would describe this music as a mellow and unusal mix of music where Enya meets Maria Callas, and I am a fan of both, so that's a good thing. It is so good that Billboard Music called it the best classical crossover of the year!

I would call this music techno opera scene from the future with beautiful opera singing, just to give you an idea of what this music is like! Also, the singer from the Fifth Element soundtrack, Inva Mula sings the song "Mon Amour".
Also singing on this cd is a singer named Shakila. She sings on "Kokab" and "Khodoya". These three are my favorite tracks. Though the cd in whole is a joy to listen to.

We'll say that "Operatica-Shine" succesfully bridged the Middle East to Europe via southern Spain.

So if you're a nu music dj, pick up this cd, so you can really spin an eclectc mix of music - Savannah Skye aka DJ Dakini-NYC...

4 out of 5 stars Better then R&B.......2004-04-16

My wife and I are always looking for new music to cuddle up to, while either watching the sunset, or getting a little heated. I think this album is a great replacement for Barry White, or some other R&B that people often equate with mood music.

These sounds will actually get your heart pounding and blood pumping without forcing you to constantly skip over songs that just get too rowdy.

4 out of 5 stars Very good, yet not comparable to Diva Dance.......2004-03-12

Let me start out by saying that i love this cd. i bought it thinking that it would be like the song Diva Dance from the Fifth Element. It is most certainly one of my favorite cd's but it is nothing like the Diva Dance song. All of the tracks are much slower, focusing more on the opera part, as opposed to the techno/pop. i would still give this cd a splendid 4 out of 5 stars, but i would just like to get across the point that it doesn't have the type of songs that are advertised. thanks.

5 out of 5 stars Opera Today.......2003-08-24

I just bought Operatica:Shine. It is my favorite CD, I strongly recomend it to enyone who enjoys opera! If you like "THE DIVA DANCE" in The Fifth Element you will love this CD!

David Helpling's sophomore effort fulfills the promise of his first CD, Between Green and Blue. The guitarist is still influenced by Patrick O'Hearn, sharing the same penchant for smoldering, sensual rhythms and simple yet highly evocative melodies. He arranges it all on guitar and synthesizers, although it's often difficult to tell which is which. Helpling sends his guitar through a stream of effects and delays, using volume swells to mask its attack, turning his stringed instrument into an ambient orchestra. Across sequencer rhythm loops that sound like a pan-ethno drum troupe floating in space, Helpling layers surging synth pads draped with simple melodies that create a moody, cinematic expanse. Because he's a guitarist, Helpling has a natural sense of phrasing that eludes many keyboardists in this area of melodic electronics. --John Diliberto

5 out of 5 stars sublime.......2007-02-26

For several years now, I have been playing this music to go to sleep to. My wife and I rely on it to usher us into dreamland each night. There are not many recordings out there that can serve do that! and it stands the test of time

5 out of 5 stars Enchanting Music.......2006-10-27

This music has depth and beauty that I rarely get to experience, The musical ideas develop throughout each of the pieces as well as the album as a whole. The songs seems to spring from a well of energy and have an almost magical quality that keeps you relaxed, yet engaged, The pieces are melodic and rhythmic enough that you don't drift off into a mindless trance. This is excellent music to work to, the music keeps you energized and focused on your work. It also great to listen to if you want to sit down and enjoy an album from start to finish.

5 out of 5 stars A magnum opus .......2006-10-11

Brilliant album, one of the best new age albums ever recorded. The track #4 Divine Whisper is my favorite, an amazing song that is like a great story being told of a mysterious and grand journey.

I have listened to many new age and ambient albums, and this one ranks near the top. Almost every song is masterfully composed. It's a dark themed music with subtle and intricate melodies.

I don't know why this album doesn't seem to get the attention it deserves, but it's assuredly a landmark masterwork in new age music.

5 out of 5 stars Simply Put ..........2006-09-15

To avoid repeating the praises mentioned thus far, I'll just keep this short. Simply put, this is hands down, bar none, the most ELEGANT sounding CD I've ever heard in my life. I'm a huge ambient music fan and "Sleeping on the Edge of the World" continues to stand out in my library, and is among one of my all time favorites. I'll make sure they bury me with this one so I can take it with me to the great beyond.

5 out of 5 stars Paradise in a dark unknown realm.......2005-01-27

David Helpling's sophomore follow-up to his debut album "Between Green and Blue" is a major artistic leap forward. Where as his first CD borrowed the 1980s keyboard styles of Patrick O'Hearn, on SOTEOTW, there is less of the O'Hearn influenced and a far more of a distinctive sound all of his own on this album.

The mix of dark moods in a positive sense is absolutely exotic and out of this world.

The dark mysterious journey through the foggy terrain begins with the eerie spiritually arousing opener entitled "Rain Falls". A dark and mysterious ambient intro begins which conveys the sense of a twilight drizzly cloudy evening and gradually builds up into an exotic track with a sound that is utterly distinctive style altogether. While it is somewhat O'Hearn influenced, this one finds Helpling with a style all of his own.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Pure & Beautiful.......2005-10-31

If you buy no other classical music, buy this collection. CD 1 (Relax) is perfect for dinner, quiet entertaining or just soft music while you're working. From "Come Away With Me", to "Whiter Shade of Pale" to "Knights in White Satin"... each piece is it's own movement - and moved you will be... Perfect for a romantic evening. CD2 is more robust, but equally entertaining. "Layla", "Livin On A Prayer", Stairway to Heaven", "Run to You" and "Bohemian Rhapsody" - you owe it to yourself to hear these licks performed by the RPO.

5 out of 5 stars Symphonic Rock.......2005-07-25

It really isn't rock, but it is a very pleasant presentation of popular music, rendered in creative ways by a full symphony orchestra. It sounds like the orchestra had a great time making these CD's.

3 out of 5 stars pleasant easy listening.......2005-07-19

It's not extremely interesting music, but nice background, relaxing and pleasant with full orchestra. Not a bad buy at all!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent CD.......2005-03-20

I received this as a present and at first I wasn't sure if I would like it because I don't like some of the original songs, but there's something about hearing the orchestra play that makes me like all of them. Just try it out.

    Album Description

Dakini Lounge marks Indo-Jazz innovator Prem Joshua's first encounter with DJ science. Here, an eclectic collection of cutting edge mixologists including Karsh Kale, Sean Dinsmore (The Dum Dum Project), Joi and Dharma Dogz (of Waterbone) shed new light on Joshua's signature sound, translating his East-West alchemies into stunning dub, chill and dance floor masterworks.

Prem Joshua has come a long way from the 18-year-old German rocker, mind blown by a Ravi Shankar performance, answering a mysterious call from a faraway place. While spending the better part of 20 years in India (where he has sold well over 50,000 records), Joshua has developed a unique musical style employing sitar, Indian flutes, saxophone, electronica and tarana-style singing that artfully—and skillfully—bridges the gap between traditional Eastern sounds and Western jazz forms, prompting the Times of India to dub him "the new guru of East-West fusion music."

Dakini Lounge marks the next logical progression in Prem Joshua's storied career. Placing the master musician's songs in the able hands of these modern day studio mavens presents new interpretations and directions for the many listeners already in love with Prem Joshua's music while introducing him to an ever wider audience.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing! The reason I decided to become a music major!.......2002-11-18

This is one of the most inspirational CD's I have ever listened to. Not only is the playing perfect, the choice in music for the CD is perfect. It provides the listener with several different styles, and yet many similar styles. The group plays the traditional Russian pieces with flair and great musicianship, such as the Stravinsky and the Shostakovich. The main reason that I enjoy this CD is that each player is performing their best for this album. Each player sounds even more amazing than they usually do. I especially enjoy when Sam takes the tuba solo from Russian Sailors' Dance down an octave. Each performer from this group is one of the best in the world on their respective instruments. In conclusion, all I can say is that this CD is amazing.

    5 out of 5 stars Utterly Necessary.......2000-10-24

This was the first brass quintet cd I ever purchased, and it has been by far the best. This group's sound is seriously unparalleled by any other quintet, including Canadian Brass. The blend and unity of style is so perfect that one is encompassed by the music, hearing each part individually and as part of the whole at the same time. Playing arrangements of excellent orchestral music, the Empire Brass Quintet truly demonstrates its virtuosity.

Fueled largely by the endlessly inventive original music chronicled in the first anthology from the hit TV series Alias, young composer Michael Giacchino's rising star quickly led to big screen success via his first major feature, Pixar's computer animated superhero spoof The Incredibles. The composer's rich eclecticism -- one that spans a thumping, contemporary techno club-savvy and brassy winks at the 60's spy-jazz canon in just its opening few cuts -- is still one of the major delights on this collection of cues from Alias' second season. But its second half largely becomes a more dramatically focused, if no less creatively restless showcase for Giacchino's orchestral writing, the scale of which impressively belies its small-screen origins. Its rare to hear TV music that evokes everything from the brooding classicism of Samuel Barber and Bernard Herrmann to more contemporary scoring masters like Goldsmith and Barry -- with a forceful nod to mixmeister Paul Oakenfold in the bargain -- but it's all here on this compelling showcase for one of film music's most promising new stars. --Jerry McCulley

    Album Description

Featuring more of composer Michael Giacchino's thrilling music — sort of a techno/club take on the classic James Bond sound. Giacchino's scores for the episodes of Season 2 received even greater acclaim than his first 22 episodes. Also included is the heart-stopping main title theme composed by series creator J.J. Abrams.

    3 out of 5 stars Alias Soundtrack.......2007-03-10

It came well packaged and was what I had ordered. Unfortunatley I didn't realize this was the orchestral soundtrack as I was looking for the soundtrack of songs they included in each episode. Good service though.

    4 out of 5 stars i want the album!..........2005-04-20

yes the score is very good but i think an album with a couple of songs heard on the show would be great to.trough the 4 seasons of the show, they featured a lots of great tunes from really talented artists (sarah maclachlan,u2,cat stevens,jet,etc...).SOi think the show deserves to have it own album like the rest of the TV shows of our time. The only thing i hope is that if they make one, they won't use those which totally not suit the spirit of the show like sex and the city and summerland soundtracks!...
    the ideal soundtrack would be:
    jet:last chance
    kate bush:this woman's work
    stars:going,going,gone
    matt beckler:from the summer
    hathaway:there's something better
    daniel lenz:spy
    josh canova:almost ran
    the crystal method:starting over
    U2:bad
    jude:you all...everybody
    debbie wesberg:home
    michelle featherstone:stay
sarah maclachlan:worlds on fire (alias mix)
so what are you waiting for?!...

5 out of 5 stars Another Excellent Follow-up to Alias' Season 1 Soundtrack.......2005-03-13

This is more wonderful music from soundtrack composer Michael Giacchino. There is a greater number of slower-paced, melancholy tracks than on the first season soundtrack, but it's a great progression nevertheless. The high-speed action techno tracks remain exciting as usual, while the slower ones are quite emotive. Unfortunately, like with the previous soundtrack, the music from the show's closing credits is not included (though the same melody is peppered throughout both CDs). Here's hoping for future soundtrack releases for Seasons 3 and 4!

3 out of 5 stars Not very exciting, I must say. .......2005-03-13

As a huge Alias fan, I was ecstatic when I got this soundtrack. Sadly, the majority of it consisted of slow, sad songs that were honestly pretty boring. I was looking forward to more loud and exciting songs, but there's probably only about 4 or 5 of those on here. If you like all the musics on Alias though, I'd say go for it!

5 out of 5 stars Triple Shot Of Bruce Juice.......2004-11-20

Greetings From Asbury Park served notice that there was a new musical force on the scene. On his debut, Bruce showed he was the best songwriter to come along since Bob Dylan. The album kicks off with the musical tongue twister "Blinded By The Light" that showed Bruce wasn't a typical singer-songwriter. The song has a funky riff and is replete with horns. "Spirit In The Night" introduced the E Street sound and is a precursor to the character oriented songs that would appear later on Born To Run & Wild. "Does This Bus Stop at 82nd St?" is fun and "For You" is a rare rock song about suicide. "Growin' Up" & It's So Hard To Be A Saint In The City" show early signs of Bruce's "Tramp" persona. "Lost In The Flood" is the great forgotten Bruce song and is as good a song as he has ever recorded. While Greetings is uneven at points ("Mary, Queen of Arkansas' & "The Angel"), it shows an artist who had a very original sound and huge potential. It is great to throw it in the CD player and hear a young, raw and hungry Bruce Springsteen and listen to where it all started.

The Wild, The Innocent & The E Street shuffle may only contain 7 songs, but they pack a punch and are among the finest of Bruce's career. The album opens with the funky guitar riff of "The E Street Shuffle". "4th Of July" is the song that made Asbury Park famous and Madame Marie's a mecca for Bruce fans. "Kitty's Back" is a blazing rock 'n' soul workout and is followed by the comical "Wild Billy's Circus Story". On the original album, the last three songs constituted side two and it is about as perfect of an album side as there is in history. "Incident on 57th Street", "Rosalita" and "New York City Serenade" is a three part musical suite and they flow seamlessly into one another. The stories they tell are so vivid that they are almost like musical literature. Bruce has released albums that were musically superior to Wild, but never one that was this much fun.

In Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Springsteen's characters are no longer looking to escape their problems, they've giving up escape a long time ago. They are searching for answers to the situations they find themselves in. Optimism has been replaced by despair and cynicism. "Badlands" is an angry anthem about never being satisfied with where you are in life. "Adam Raised A Cain" is about the struggles between a father and his angry son and "Factory" is about the drudgery of everyday life. Songs like "Something In The Night", "The Promised Land" and "Racing In The Streets" are about chasing a dream that one will probably never find. "Candy's Room", "Streets Of Fire" & "Prove It All Night" are about putting everything on the line for someone and having to constantly prove their devotion. The title song best sums up the album. People are looking for answers to the same questions, willing to pay the cost, but never find them. No matter how much time they search into the Darkness On The Edge Of Town, they end up in the same place.

4 out of 5 stars 3 Bangs: Less Than 30 Measley Bucks ?!.......2003-08-12

If I didn't have all three of these albums in my collection, I'd jump on this deal. 3 early Bruce albums for ...? Each disc buries every post-"River" album (with the exception of "Nebraska") by a long shot. Of the 3, "Wild & Innocent" is the least accessible, and even it boasts 'Rosalita', '4th of July'(better known as 'Sandy'), and the weighty 'New York City Serenade'. The poetry on "Greetings" is weird, and playful, and fun as hell: "Nuns run bald through Vatican halls, pregnant, pleading immaculate conception...?" And "Darkness"? Well, it's just a rock-solid album, pun intended. These albums are must-haves for anyone who knew and loved Bruce before the "Born in the USA" debacle.

5 out of 5 stars Holy smokes! 3 of Springsteen's records at once!.......2002-04-03

In my humble opinion, 'The Wild, the Innocent, & the E st. Shuffle' remains one of Bruce's best albums. Taking a lot of inspiration from Van Morrison's 'Astrel Weeks,' Springsteen made a funky record that plays like cinema. Sort of a Scorsese-meets-Fellini epic. This was the record that had the East Coast rock community waiting in anticipation for what turned out to be 'Born to Run.' (hence the simultanious Time & Newsweek cover stories)

'Darkness on the Edge of Town,' of course, is loaded with Springsteen classics that he still plays live today - Badlands, Promised Land, Prove it All Night etc...
