Great Selection.......2004-11-29

I haven't actually bought the soundtrack yet, but if I am reading correctly this is the best soundtrack. I have been looking for the narration along with music for performance. Glad to see that Target carries this selection. You can always count on Target. Plus I just bought the new Harry Potter DVD from target before any other store was open. Thanks for that.

Enjoyable CD, but...........2003-12-21

I do kinda wish that this had been more like the Rudolph album - without the narration, and with both vocal and instrumental versions of all the songs.

Having said that, I guess I must qualify it by saying that we are probably lucky that we have this at all. It is, literally, a reproduction of the original albums that were released when the TV specials came out. The audio is great, very clear.

Now, when are we going to see a soundtrack CD for "The Year Without a Santa Claus"?

Tracks one and two are each aproxamately 25 minutes and together are the enire audio of santa claus is comin to town. tracks three and four are the entire audio from frosty. Five and Six are the songs santa claus is comin to town and frosty the snowman (respectively).

As a soundtrack collector, and a big fan of the Rankin-Bass TV specials, I've searched high and low for the rare original MGM Records LPs of these great classics. I never would have dreamed there'd be a CD! Leave it to the great folks at Rhino to come up with both of these gems on a single disc. The sound is good quality (for a TV soundtrack) and it's a wonderful treasure for any family to enjoy at holiday time. Highly recommended!

A PERFECT Christmas gift for those RANKIN/BASS fans! I disagree with the other review here. Paul Frees and June Foray on the FROSTY soundtrack is what makes this so SPECIAL! WONDERFUL PACKAGING too!!!!So glad to see another company involve RICK! Makes a BIG difference...as it did with the MAD MONSTER PARTY DVD!!!!My hat is off to RHINO!!! Like his good friend Esquivel, Henry Mancini mixed some mean orchestral Christmas cocktails. But where Esquivel was possessed by wackiness and whimsy, Mancini played things fairly straight and still managed to create a sound that defined his career and an era. Sadly, the selections here are pedestrian, even by the well-trodden holiday boulevard standards. "White Christmas," "The Little Drummer Boy," and "The Christmas Song" all benefit nonetheless from Mancini's genius for timing and dynamics. Even the mundane "Frosty the Snowman" gets some new life breathed into him thanks to Mancini's arrangement, and "Carols for Another Christmas" is a good example of Mancini's hip restraint. Merry Mancini Christmas, while not the maestro at his best, still imparts some of that madcap, martini-era holiday spirit as only Mancini knew. --Steve Gdula

I just love Christmas music and I love Mancini's Pink Panther and others. I thought this might be a good addition to my collection and it turned out to be a dud. Nothing special at all.

This album is for all those baby boomers out there who grew up listening to the great Mancini. Someone said this album was pedestrian. They couldn't have been farther from the truth! This will rekindle childhood memories of Christmas like it used to be. Pull up a chair by the fire, grab that warm apple cider, turn the Christmas lights on and enjoy!

Mancini is Magical.......2004-12-15

I come from a very large family and since the mid-sixties when my parents bought it we'd play this album during the holidays. We played it until you could hardly hear some of the songs without the crackling and skipping the LP's were notorious for. By the time it was totally inaudible the LP wasn't being made any longer. We were all crushed because our Christmas mainstay album was gone. (Particularly because we lost both parents some years ago within 2 months of each other and we always listened as a family to this album.) When the CD came out we were overjoyed to say the least. I ALWAYS cry as do all of us in my family when "Carol for Another Christmas" plays because it holds such dear memories of my parents listening to us massacre that song on our instruments EVERY SINGLE CHRISTMAS!!! But they always swore we played beautifully.

Tasteful, traditional orchestral Christmas music. More importantly, "Carol for Another Christmas" may be the most beautiful Christmas composition of the 20th Century.

My Favorite Instrumental Christmas Album.......2005-11-05

This is an often overlooked gem of Christmas music. I love Christmas music so much that I have a hard time waiting until December to start playing it - but I have to have mercy on my husband (he likes it, but within reason, unlike me, the Christmas nut!).

This is an album that it almost constantly in my CD player come December. I had a very hard time finding an album where the carols are played normally. If you're one of those people who, like me, hate when people mess around with the words, tempo, beat, even the tune of your favorite traditional songs, then you'll love this album, because it does none of those things. There's nothing more annoying that singing along to a tune, only to have it go off out of whack into something that no one has ever heard before. This one doesn't do that.

I only had a few minor complaints about this disc. One was that track number 16 was improperly labelled. It says that the tune is "Bell Carol (Good Christian Men Rejoice)" It's not! The actual music is "Here Comes Santa Claus".

The only other track I had a problem with was #20, "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy". The person playing it sounds like he's wailing on that clavichord. I keep thinking that he's about to break the instrument, he's hitting it so hard. It's supposed to be played delicately, not like an elephant is jumping up and down on the instrument. This is the only track that I skip over.

Other than that, though, this is an album worth getting. There is no choir here, just pure orchestra, if that's what you're looking for. If you're sick of paying tons of money for a sub-standard recording that messes with the music instead of playing it the way it's meant to be played, then get this one instead. This orchestra plays the songs properly.

Good orchestration of classic Christmas music........2002-11-25

Though this isn't a five-star CD by any means, it still offers decent quality orchestration of the good ole classic Christmas tunes. All the pieces are played by the 101 String Orchestra, and though I've not heard anything from them before, they do a reasonable job with the holiday classics.

This is the type of collection that presents an interesting dilemma for parents: The kids will love it and be entertained and occupied for hours. The only drawback is that you will have to hear it. Like most things that appeal to kids, there's something initially charming that soon loses its luster. Great sing-along classics are featured like "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer" and "Jingle Bells." "Up on the House Top" unfortunately has audience participation built right into it with its "click click click" line. "O Tannenbaum" is rather touching, but the inclusion of "Winter Wonderland" just might leave some children asking all the wrong questions. --Steve Gdula

This CD is absolutely perfect if you love angelic childrens voices singing the beautiful classical Christmas songs. I guarantee that you will absolutelly love it. And you won't tire of it like you do all the Hollywood music singers CD's - although I have many.

This album is as close as you can possibly come to the Christmas spirit. I first bought this album to play during the holidays at my store in Concord, MA. I never knew the reaction it would bring. I had customer after customer asking for the title of the album. Eventually, I just placed the cover near the register. And Whitney Keyes has one of the purest voices I have ever heard. Her rendition of "Winter Wonderland" is reason enough to purchase the CD.
