Customer Reviews:
Good overall.......2005-07-20
Technically a very clean album. It has a good selection of tunes, particularly for the history buff, however some of the polished choral pieces sound funny when you think that most of them are essentially folk tunes that should be sung with a somewhat less practiced air. Overall, worth the purchase for historical value and good production.
Great Music from the Birth of Our Nation.......2002-02-02
A great collection of music from 18th century America.
If you enjoy fifes and drums, choral compositions, patriotic songs, and uplifting music from the birth of America, please get this CD.
A perfect selection for a patriotic American to play, especially on the 4th of July.
Protest Songs of the 1770s.......2002-01-24
The music that was composed and performed during the American Revolution is presented on this 1 hour CD. Since I was a child, I've enjoyed hearing the drum and fife corps on the Fourth of July and during the Presidential inaugurations, and this CD has several good drum and fife marches. Other selections are 18th century protest songs about taxation ("A taxing we will go...} and British tyranny. There are also some good harpsichord numbers contained on this CD. The musicians are excellent and the sound is clear. I don't know how many common people got to hear music like this during the Revolution, but at least this CD gives the 21st Century listener the opportunity enjoy the "popular" music of 200 years ago. Classical music lovers will enjoy this CD too.
Important work of musical heritage.......1999-02-25
I fell in love with this CD from the first track. The music of the American Fife Ensamble is stirring, I felt positivly rebelious. The satarical songs based on the tunes "British Grenadires" and "Hearts of Oak" are like the paintings of W. Hogarth set to music. You should have more than a cursory knowledge of the 18th century though, to fully enjoy this CD
A good source of enjoyment and education.......1999-02-23
We will never know exactly how these songs sounded when the citizens of Boston were darting black looks to the British regulars on the streets, but I would wager quite a bit that these renditions come pretty close. Of course the "American" accents are an anachronism; but most listeners might be puzzled to hear British accents used for these anti-British songs (with one exception, composed by a British regular!)I have already used selections from this CD to a groups of 3rd and 5th graders and they loved it. So teachers, take note, but be sure they have the words in front of them. A very valuable educational tool that also happens to be a very enjoyable program to hear for its own sake. And as with most New World releases, the annotations alone are worth the price of the product.

Wonderful music, well played.......2006-08-31
This is an incredible collection of pieces from an important modern composer...played by an incredible collection of performers. Some of them are famous, others deserve to be. The variety of sounds, the skillful use of different instruments and voices, and the outstanding performances make this a great CD set. The range of instruments is fascinating, from voice (doing vocal gymnastics we can't imagine) to Paula Robison's flute, to Gary Verkade on the organ. Anyone with an interest in new music should listen to this!

A masterpiece by Ellison!.......1999-03-22
This cd features widely differing works by young American composers, all very well handled by Block and the Slovak Radio Symphony. However, it is worth buying for the Henry V ouverture by Michael Ellison alone. This composer simply shows masterful command of the orchestra. In this one piece he demonstrates a refinement of tone colour not unequal to a Debussy or Ravel, while at the same time preserving the edge and intensity of a Bartok. This music is a rare example of thoroughly modern music captivating the ear without refuge to neo-romantic platitudes. It is a genuine diamond. As a music student I strongly recommend this cd to any lover of comtemporary music, Ellisons ouverture might arguably be one of the last masterpieces of our century.

Reprint of March online Operanews.com review.......2001-05-29
Composer Lori Laitman knows how to let the voice soar and explore, and recitalists looking to update their concert repertory would do well to pick up this disc for ideas. Laitman lets the texts inform her music, spinning lyrical neo-romantic vocal lines over shifting post-modern sonorities. In the title song cycle, Mystery, a collection of poems by Sara Teasdale, baritone William Sharp lends his customary intelligence and deft musicianship to various evocations of the contradictions and enigmas of love. The Metropolitan Tower and Other Songs, also poems by Teasdale, is rendered by the excellent Lauren Wagner, whose thrilling, expressive soprano is marred only by unnecessarily plummy diction. In the fascinating setting of six of the Love Songs of Marichiko by Kenneth Rexroth, Laitman cleverly utilizes solo cello accompaniment, suggesting the Japanese musical landscape without stranding herself there. Soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson negotiates these tricky songs with great yearning; she also gives a spirited reading of the warm, playful cycle "Days and Nights". In the highly affecting I Never Saw Another Butterfly, comprised of texts by children who perished in the Holocaust, the mournful solo saxophone represents the Eastern European Klezmer tradition. Saxophonist Gary Louie adroitly explores Laitman's flexibility of style, which reflects the kaleidoscope of emotions in these haunting, prescient texts, again beautifully sung by Wagner. Frederick Weldy, Seth Knopp and Laitman herself dispatch Laitman's intricate piano parts, alternating delicacy with rhythmic fervor. It's a treat to hear contemporary art songs that showcase the voice as flatteringly as these, and which retain individuality and surprise without sacrificing accessibility. JOANNE SYDNEY LESSNER
Lori Laitman Delivers Sensitive Lush Emotional Landscape.......2000-09-09
Lori Laitman, of Potomac Maryland, writes in the vein of Samuel Barber and Ned Rorem. Her harmonies and sensitivity to lyric content are always carefully balanced to give both color and meaning to the dense impact of her music. This compilation includes excerpts from several song cycles and is an excellent cross sample of style and emotion. I do regret that this album was not more inclusive as there are many excellent art songs that have never been recorded on a publicly available CD. The playing is clean and delightfully articulate and interpretations are vast emotional landscapes of the human experience. This CD is a must have for collectors and lovers of the American Art Song. Lori Laitman will certainly become an important part of the 20th century art song genre as her music reaches wider audiences and is accepted for the jewels and fine portraits of emotion that they are.

You'll keep listening!.......2004-01-25
What do you get when you take one of the most beautifull, largest organs of the world, in a place with great acoustics, fill it with the world's best organists?
Exactly! This CD!
The works of Robert Hebble alone are worth buying it. I'm astounded that he is so little known in the world of the organ. His composition "A Symphonie of Light" is such a fantastic work of art, it's serious, complex, it has mystique, it's radiant, exuberant. Well I just love it!
This CD is VERY good, the recording also is pretty good, but you only get a distorted view of distances. That still makes it worthwile!
A must for any organ-collection.......2001-03-08
This is an impeccably recorded CD. Perfect balance of organ and audience applause--there is little indication of it being a LIVE recording, except for the applause. The performances are awesome. Tom Hazleton's theatre-organ influences can be heard in his interpretation of Bach's T & F in d-minor. As flamboyant as Fox himself would have played it. The concert ends with F. Swann playing an emotional Come, Sweet Death with 20 tolls of the great bell (20 years since Fox's death). He then leads the attendees in O God, Our Help in Ages Past. Splendid singing by what must be an audience of musicians, and fantastic hymn-playing as only Swann can do on the great 5-manual Riverside organ--utilizing all of its vast resources in the final 'amen'.

Album Description
The magnificent 10,010 pipe Longwood Organ is heard to its fullest with a varied program performed expertly by Thomas Murray.
Customer Reviews:
A Great Recording of a Great Organ.......2007-05-27
The organ on this recording is generally believed to be the largest "residence organ" in the world, with over ten thousand pipes. It was purchased by Pierre du Pont (1870-1954) in 1929 for his grand estate in southeastern Pennsylvania. That estate, known as Longwood Gardens, is now open to the public, and the organ remains in situ in the music room attached to Longwood's dramatic conservatories. (The organ is currently undergoing a thorough restoration, which is scheduled to be completed in 2008.)
Performing on this disc is Thomas Murray, probably the greatest living concert organist. His light touch, and the pieces he has chosen, do a terrific job of displaying this organ's capabilities. The program includes two movements from "Longwood Sketches," a piece written for this organ by Firmin Swinnen (1885-1972). Swinnen, a native of Belgium, gained renown as a concert and movie organist before being hired in the mid-1920s by Pierre du Pont to perform regularly at Longwood. The "Sketches" are whimsical, romantic pieces that show off the organist's virtuosity and the instrument's many colors.
This is an excellent recording, highly recommended for fans of the concert organ and its repertoire.

AMAZING voice.......2006-05-12
Seth has an amazing voice. I truly think he has the potential to be a really great star. His presense, charisma and ability to master several musical styles makes him stand out from the rest. I've heard him sing "Wish Upon A Star" and when I heard Nysnc do it, I seriously couldn't tell the difference. In fact, Seth made it better! I listened to that song everday for about two months straight.
Nice Try...Move On.......2004-11-18
Please don't waste your money. This CD, though an admirable effort by a vocally talented artist, is one of the worst attempts at a breakout album ever recorded. The simple lyrics and dated, electronic sound might pull some weight overseas, but the good ol' U.S. of A. will not embrace mediocre writing spliced with poorly synthesized accompaniment. "Just close your eyes and count to two/dive on in just me and you"??? Who counts to TWO? Why not "Just close your eyes and count to three/dive on in just you and me"? And who can overlook the cheesy phone conversation played at the beginning of one of the songs? Come on, Mr. Thomas, we know you can sing. Now prove that you can write.
It's...unique.......2003-11-12
Seth Thomas is really named Seth Grugle. He is a funny boy. This CD is fairly corny. He made a star out of himself at the Garland Civic Theatre. He will remain at the Garland Civic Theatre. His CD would make a great coaster, or nice addition to your stack of AOL trial disks. Don't forget, his real name is Seth Grugle.
Seth is dreamy, but he made me cry........2002-03-31
I met Seth at Star Spangled Seth after hearing him TEAR IT UP on stage. He was so hot and dreamy. I bought his CD and listened to it every day when i got ready for school, curled my hair, and painted my nails. It made me smile, but sometimes it made me cry. I don't like to cry, SETH, why do you make me cry? The track Anywhere is so HOT HOT HOT!!! You should buy this CD and listen to it while you write in your journal. Tee hee.
Up-coming Star.......2001-08-05
The first time i heard this Cd, I was interested. The second time, I was hooked! This is a great debut from a sure-to-be big music star. Seth wrote 2 of the 3 original tracks on this single, and has talent both in songwriting and singing. Favourite track? Fly Away.
