I hate giving this or the other RS album less than five stars. If I could edit their two efforts down to 1 CD, it would be one of the best albums in my collection or hearing. There is uneveness in the sequencing of songs, and the whole never fully rests upon each of its parts. But some parts can be amazing.

That said, this Dublin quartet at its start combined all sorts of indie influences ranging from shoegazing to psychedelic to folkish to cut-up dub mishmash and made them sound not only fresh but cohesive. While the schizophrenic nature of this album had irritated its first listeners judging from reactions, for me it only grows more powerful and lovely.

Touches of bodhran (Lunasa), tremendous riffs (Bow Hitch Hiker), pagan lyricism, joy and thunder and fear all preoccupy the weighty yet not heavy lyrical and musical filigrees that adorn this ambitious album that seemed at its release to have come full-blown like some goddess from the head of a inscrutable deity. The cover art, as if of an idiot crowned, sums up the contradictory surface which when plumbed makes more sense. This album takes time to sink in, and sink into, but it's worth a plunge, again and again to be refreshed and giddy

Rollerskate Skinny's debut cd Shoulder Voices is a voyage into the world of noise, which somehow becomes and develops into beautiful melodies of music. Yes, other bands such as Sonic Youth and My Bloody Valentine have experimented with this medium, yet Rollerskate Skinny have mastered the art of adding a touch of orchestration to the up and down emotions of life. The first time I heard this cd I almost wept...finally, someone has put love and anger into the blender and poured me a glass.

Strange and unusual 90s rock, not to be missed!.......2001-08-11

There are a handful albums I have heard that define their own space and take the listener to a different plane. "154" by Wire, "In Ribbons" by Pale Saints, "Victorialand" by Cocteau Twins, perhaps "Murmur" by REM....""Shoulder Voices" also belongs in this category. The lyrics are sometimes hard to decipher but the melodies are unusual yet catchy. It's unlike anything I've heard even though it can be lumped in with bands like My Bloody Valentine and Sonic Youth. The second half of this album is defintely superior to the first with the last 3 tracks "Some Give Birth", Shallow Thunder", "Slave" leading in perfectly into the album's high point "So Far Down Up To Heaven", the song that made me buy the album. The first side starts strongly but then meanders a bit, but still worthwhile listening. This is adventurous music that not too many other bands today are producing except for maybe Super Furry Animals, Sigur Ros and a few others.

Excellent sound from local band.......2001-05-26

When I first heard this band's material, I was hooked instantly. Now that they have released their new album, Placebo Dream, I like them even more. Their album ranges from a song about daydreams (Save the Day) to romantic ballad (Southern Girl). In each song, the outstanding vocals of Karl Coleman are only heightened by the wide range of intrustaments imployed by the rest of the band. This is truly a jam band where one song's sound is explored to the fullest to produce an intense experience for the listener. I would recommend this album to anyone seeking a sound injected with rhythm and soul. This band finds a style that can satisfy!

Funky Eclectic Sound.......2001-04-23

This extremely talented band puts all of their musical abilities to work, melding banjo, excellent guitar work(solo and rythm), saxaphone, and complex basslines to fuse a masterpiece of up-beat, funky, yet rock influenced sound that is sure to please the ears of anyone looking for an original, refreshing sound in a world of cookie-cutter bands that all sound the same. From rock riffs to funk-influenced basslines and the occasional acoustic reprieve, all the various sounds come together nicely to form a well balanced sound that encourages endless jamming.
