4 out of 5 stars Sounds more like an Alan Parsons album than an Al Stewart album.......2006-11-29

I would have presumed that producer Alan Parsons was less intimately involved with this record than with its predecessor, "Year of the Cat". His own project had released a record the year earlier and he was likely devoting most of his time to that. Nevertheless, "Time Passages" sounds far more like an Alan Parsons record than his previous collaborations with Al Stewart do.

That's not a complaint, just an observation. Whereas "Year of the Cat" (abbreviated hereafter as YotC) is at heart a beautiful acoustic folk record that is merely enhanced by Parsons' production, "Time Passages" seems to have been transformed, resulting in a whole new sound. The title track is the most similar to YotC, using many of the same elements that made the title track from YotC a huge hit such as a mellow piano - or in this case, keyboard - intro, culminating in a loud and passionate sax solo near the end. But the heart of this album is progressive, spacey, trippy, synthesizer-powered, mellow rock. Not only that, there is also some very slick electric guitar playing on this record (played by the same guy who did the amazing acoustic guitar part on YotC's "On the Border".) There are even moments on the third track that sound ripped straight from a Pink Floyd album.

I find that Al Stewart's voice fits in very well with all of this, strangely enough. Apart from "Time Passages" title track, I don't think the songwriting is as good here as it was on YotC. Still, the production value is amazing and the album has a great sound. This remastered Rhino disc sounds great, this is a good buy.

In addition to Al Stewart fans, I think the album would be enjoyed by many fans of Pink Floyd, fans of the Moody Blues albums of this period (Octave, Long Distance Voyager, etc.), and even some fans of contemporary downtempo groups Air and Zero 7.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Al Stewart's Best.......2006-05-17

TIME PASSAGES is one of Al Stewart's best albums ever. His music from this period has come under fire from the reviewers at MUSICHOUND, but it's their loss. Stewart had found a sympathetic producer in Alan Parsons, who added much-needed muscle to Stewart's music, and Stewart's folkie leanings also prevented Parsons from overdoing things. The second verse of the title track makes the point that living in the past can make it hard to focus on the present, a theme which I've expressed in putting my dream of looking good for any number of pretty actresses as a higher priority than going to Thanksgiving dinner and Graduation luncheon at my old school. "Song On The Radio" is also great, and if nothing else quite matches these two peaks, the rest of the album is nevertheless quite consistent. Stewart would put out two more great albums, 24 CARROTS and LIVE- INDIAN SUMMER, and then hit a dry patch musically before coming back in the last eighteen years with a series of excellent releases, including RHYMES IN ROOMS and FAMOUS LAST WORDS. The fact that some of Stewart's work has dated poorly takes nothing away from the lyrical power of this album and its direct predecessor, YEAR OF THE CAT.

5 out of 5 stars MR. ALAN PARSONS, PLEASE STEP FORWARD AND TAKE A BOW..........2005-06-08

Sigh... if only Al Stewart and Alan Parsons were working together again - they were perfect musical soulmates not unlike Lennon/McCartney. When you get right down to it, Al is really a folkie troubadour; as such, I'm convinced that these tunes wouldn't be anywhere near as fleshed out if it weren't for Alan Parsons' musical guidance and sound expertise - and the end result is a sonic masterpiece. If you were to get only two Al Stewart CDs, it would have to be the ones where AP was working the soundboard - "Year Of The Cat" and this one. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars This is best for veteran fans..........2004-09-25

since the hits from this one, "Time Passages" and "Song on the Radio" are available on other CD's, along with companion tunes which are a bit stronger than the other seven tracks here. I must say, however, I like "Valentina Way" a lot. Al is mostly mellow, and often cerebral, sometimes obscure in his history sagas, but he enunciates beautifully, and the guitar-dominant accompaniment is always good on his albums. He did unique stuff, and his best compositions are truly remarkable and hold up well to repeated listening. If you are new to him, look for his "Greatest Hits" or the "Song on the Radio" compilation, then dig in to the originals from the '70's and '80's one-by-one.

5 out of 5 stars terrific--brilliant songwriting & great production.......2004-09-03

To a certain extent, it's not that surprising that certain fans will somewhat write this album off, being as it was, along with "Year Of The Cat", Al's commercial peak--in the US, the album reached the Top Ten on the album charts & went platinum within a year of its original release in September/ October of 1978. Granted, Al has lots of excellent work from before as well as after this album, yet "Time Passages" demonstrates a genius at an absolute peak. Al's songwriting on track after track is so melodically rich & full of outstanding, incisive lyrics, it's hard not to be envious of his ability. Also, his understated, precisely-phrased, clearly enunciated vocals complement the material perfectly. As much credit as Al deserves, you can't deny the contributions of producer Alan Parsons for the album's lush, warm sound, & all the great musicianship, including guitarist Peter White who co-wrote the beautiful, timeless title track (& the final track--everything in between was written by Al himself). Some fans seem to find the sound of the album too bland/ soft-rockish/ radio-friendly, which is being very harsh. His folkier side is very much represented on "Timeless Skies" and "Almost Lucy", the latter of which is one of his patented 'mysterious woman' songs. Maybe it WAS radio-friendly for its time, but listening today it sounds arguably even more impressive than when first released in the sense that there's none of the overdone, overly slick, lifeless production that's heard all too frequently on much 1990s/ 2000s music. The album is so rich & complete--you could go on at length discussing the individual tracks... The thing that really drives it all home making the album so extra-special is the emotional resonance of the material--the majestic title track, "Timeless Skies" (with a great "rainy" acoustic guitar part), and the relaxed "Song On The Radio" are all wistful, breezy, and wonderful; the haunting story-song "Almost Lucy" is also a terrific, deeply affecting track. "The Palace of Versailles" with its great synthesizer melody, & the punchy uptempo rocker "Valentina Way" are a couple more gems from the album. Al said in an interview over 20 years ago he doesn't expect listeners to fully understand his often historically-based lyrics, and that some of it elludes even himself. Having attended a Stewart concert this past June, playing solo with acoustic guitar, his humbleness is readily apparent, and as much as he clearly enjoys piling in the little details into his lyrics for the fans who love trying to decipher it all and to point out any historical inaccuracies, he is truly effective in his attempts to communicate feeling. This Rhino Records treatment of the album, with the liner notes & outstanding sound quality, take an already must-have album that extra mile. If you're new to Al, this is an ideal starting place--"Time Passages" belongs in any serious listener's collection.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful.......2007-03-09

i'm a pianist and i find this album to be one of the most beautiful works i've ever heard.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely loved this Cd.......2006-10-18

The sitar really gets to you! Won't go into any mumbo-jumbo about why this collaboration works. It just does.A truly enjoyable purchase!

4 out of 5 stars More Glass than Shankar.......2006-09-02

This is a very good CD, and I think how much you like it may depend upon if you like Glass music more than Shankar music, or if you are not a sitar fan or not a minimalism fan (but why get the CD if that is the case.) That is, the composing credits show 1/2 the pieces are written by Glass and 1/2 by Shankar, but there seems to be a more western than eastern sensibility to each piece, to such a degree that without looking at the credits, I would think each piece was written by Glass, with some sitar accompaniment thrown in on the side. I really like this CD because I really do like Phillip Glass, and I am only holding back one star because I had expectations that there would be an absolutely magical melding of two partners in some type of exact half and half musical arrangement.

5 out of 5 stars India meets America.......2006-03-15

A great collaboration between Shanker and Glass, I would recommend this CD to all music lovers.

3 out of 5 stars Try a blend of Ganges and Mississippi Delta..........2005-11-10

if you liked this CD, I honestly think you'll be even more impressed by the collaboration between Ry Cooder and Vishwa Mohan Bhatt (A Meeting By The River). Ry Cooder's blues slide guitar provides some fine enhancements to classical Indian music.

This work by Ravi Shankar and Phillip Glass only just combines popular Indian vernacular with some touches of western classical. I expected much more from Ravi Shankar, given his experience playing with western jazz and fusion artists.

But I guess, usually, the end result is more a reflection of western musicians' ability to work with Indian musicians' (harmonic-harmonic scale).

Album Description

Album Description Consciousness-altering rhythms for shamanic journeying, meditation or dreaming.

This recording has been digitally recorded and mastered to produce the richest acoustic depth and full tonal range necessary to alter consciousness for the purpose of making shamanic journeys.

The type of insistent, rapid drumming found on this recording can provide support for shifting consciousness. When shamans journey to the spirit realm, they enter a trance-like state of consciousness. In this trance state, the brain generates theta waves which are characterized by a 4 cycle-per-minute pattern. Research into altered states have determined that the deepest states of shamanic consciousness may be accessed by listening to rhythmic drumming of 4-beats-per-second because these rhythms replicate the natural theta state.

Step-by-step instructions for making successful shamanic journeys, using this method, are explained in Evelyn C. Rysdyk's book, Modern Shamanic Living. (It is strongly suggested that persons with no prior journey experience read this book first!) The sonic-supported journey technique, pioneered by anthropologist Dr. Michael Harner, provides an opportunity for ordinary people to access the realms of spirit in a very safe manner.

For best results, listen to this recording while wearing headphones. To make shorter journeys than the full CD length, skip to the call-back track when you feel ready to return.

5 out of 5 stars GREAT VIBS.......2007-04-22

When you don't go out with your rattle, and you are needing to meet with your animal totem, this CD does the job.

4 out of 5 stars So this is Shamanic Drumming ..........2006-07-10

This is an interesting review to write - this CD does exactly what it says on the title, which is to induce a deep trance by the use of a single rhythm drum pattern, for shamanic journeys.

However, if you are looking for interesting ethnic drum beats or examples of native American drums, you won't find them here, because the entire CD, apart from two tracks at the beginning and the end which are each less than 2 minute in length, is one single drum pattern of four beats per second which repeats for nearly an hour.

If you want a shamanic trance, this product will deliver; but don't buy this if you want to be entertained!

4 out of 5 stars Excellent drumming music for Shamanic Journeying.......2006-06-24

This is the best CD I have found so far for doing shamanic journeying to recorded drumming. There are just 3 tracks - inviting the spirits, the journey drumming, and a call back at the end. I loaded it onto my iPod and it works very well for me.

I found the sound quality to be excellent, crisp and clear, and the energy in the sound to be amazing. It really "does the job" and provides the horse to ride for the journey. A friend of mine had an incredible first journey just from using this recording. I also use it as a background when I am doing my own drumming, to assist and provide me with a "backup group."

Note: this is not a "musical" CD, and not just for listening to!

5 out of 5 stars It's the real deal........2004-09-07

I've listened to this CD and it has lived up to its purpose, and then some. Deep trance is the name of this game. Heavily so. If you are open, it is quite a powerfull tool.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2004-06-16

First I must say that if you are looking for entertaining music or drumming, look elsewhere; that's not the purpose of this CD. Additionally, listening to a shamanic drumming CD does not make an instant shaman out of anyone; if you are expecting this CD to transform your abilities, you are mistaken. Drumming is intended to promote trance induction, but it won't do you much good if you don't put yourself in the right mindset to trance or know what to do once you begin to trance.

That being said, this is a good shamanic drumming CD for people who already do trance work or who are exploring it for the first time under the preparation and/or guidance of someone who knows what they are doing. The drumming is a good speed and lasts long enough for a good trance session, and rattles accompany the drumming appropriately. Callback is also effective.

Album Description

In 2002 Philip Glass composed the soundtrack score to the Stephen Daldry film "The Hours". The film went on to receive 9 Acadamy Awards nominations, including one for `best score'.

At the beginning of the film, Daldry depicts the timelessness of small daily events, how the real elements of life are patterns that repeat across time. The movie opens with three women from three different eras intercut, all doing similar things. There's Virginia Woolf (Nicole Kidman) in 1923, a troubled young mother (Julianne Moore) in 1951 and a woman (Meryl Streep) in 2001 making preparations for a party later that evening. In one location flowers are bought, in another displayed, in another discarded. Philip Glass' score intensely underlines the images with a sense of strangeness and sympathy.

Michael Riesman, Mr. Glass' longtime musical director and producer of the film score recordings, created solo piano adaptations of the original score and has been performing them in concert.

Orange Mountain Music is very happy to release a CD of studio recordings of this beautiful and emotional work performed by the brilliant pianist and intimate interperter of Philip Glass' work, Michael Riesman.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Philip Glass' Musical Score for 'The Hours' Distilled.......2007-03-28

Returning to view the masterfully created cinematic production of Michael Cunningham's THE HOURS always leaves the reminder that much of the atmosphere that made the film work so well on every level was the musical score composed by Philip Glass. The soundtrack recording from the film remains for this listener a constant companion and now there is yet another extension of the eloquence of Glass' achievement.

Glass' longtime musical colleague is Michael Riesman, a gifted pianist as well as a composer who had the fine thought of distilling Glass' already minimalist score for piano solo. And in this recording Riesman performs his composer-sanctioned transcriptions with not only impeccable musical skill but also with the knowledge of both the Cunningham novel and the Virginia Woolf novel 'Mrs. Dalloway' on which it was based. The result is far more richly varied series of vignettes than most would have thought possible.

For those who are devotees of Philip Glass' compositions, from the very large symphonies and operas to the chamber ensemble and solo instrumental works, this series of piano transcriptions will prove rewarding. Reisman makes Glass' ideas crystalline, allowing us to hear the very subtle differences in the music he created for each character and each emotion.

For those less familiar with Philip Glass' music but very familiar with the film 'The Hours', this recording will provide an hour of nostalgia and clean swept elegance that can be heard at any moment (any hour!) of the day. Highly Recommended. Grady Harp, March 07

5 out of 5 stars Great music.......2007-02-03

This recording captures the essence of Glass minimal composition, and has the same feeling and emotion that his other solo piano recordings contain.
This is also a good recording since there is only two songs that are borrowed from other recordings, namely Floe and Metamorphosis #3. Floe is a beautiful song on solo piano, and actually sounds better without the flute in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars A fine addition to your Glass library........2006-08-21

Let's get this part out of the way: Ghastly movie, beautiful music. One of Philip Glass's richest scores transcribed for piano and ready to be re-experienced on a different, core level. Glass has always been an acquired taste. If you enjoy his work, this is worth adding to the collection.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful piano.......2005-09-21

I loved this soundtrack when I first heard it on the film and to hear it with solo piano--in it's most basic true form--is so fantastic. It has even more emotion simplified.

4 out of 5 stars Exquisite . . . .......2005-08-16

masterpiece from Philip Glass, it reflects all movie emotion since movie beginning until the end. You can go from calm and quiet short periods to an inevitable rush. A barely bearable anxiety.

Album Description

DYSRHYTHMIA have established themselves as one of the finest instrumental bands in the world. Masters of their craft, DYSRHYTHMIA make the standard 'rock' (guitar, bass, drums) setup sound like a symphony and complex, innovative music sound easy. On its new record Barriers and Passages, the trio raises the bar once again with their exceptional playing and unwavering dedication to forward-thinking song craft. Time signatures bend and shift intuitively. Rich washes of melody and layers of noise are the voices that punctuate crisp musical constructions. Engineered by Martin Bisi (SONIC YOUTH, DRESDEN DOLLS, SWANS, HELMET, BRIAN ENO), Barriers and Passages is DYSRHYTHMIA's tour de force.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Ignore the one star reviews.......2007-07-21

Outstanding album, equal parts mid-period King Crimson and Shellac. Not technical metal really, nor trying to be. More the energy of a hardcore band with no interest in 2-minute verse-chorus-verse songs. Closer in spirit to Don Caballero or a razor-sharp meter-shifting Fugazi with a wider harmonic palate. "Seal/Breaker/Void" stands out.

5 out of 5 stars Dissonent Figures.......2006-09-30

I discovered this disc after I found out that one of Dysrythmia's members also plays with Behold...The Arctopus. While its not as intense as the latter, it still makes for pretty exiting listening. If you discover this disc the way I did, I think you'll find that the sound is alittle more open than The Arctopus. Dysrythmia's guitarist tends to play dissonent figures more often than riffs. This allows more space for the Warr guitarist's performance in the mix.

1 out of 5 stars Is this even music?.......2006-09-17

Oh come on i do not even see how this is considered music. From the raving reviews about it i would have thought htis band would be better but they are NOT. To me all it sounds like i someone just learning to play messing around with a very paltry melody. And thats it..... I would not recommend this to anyone. Also i found it a bit... eh... new agey. Which i found a bit disconcerting.

1 out of 5 stars I wish I could rate zero stars.......2006-08-28

I bought this CD last Friday and knew I had made a mistake within 30 seconds of the 1st song. I only made it through the 4th track before removing it from my CD player and returning to the store to exchange it. I can respect complex time changes, but being good at math does not make for good music. I heard nothing that could be considered a melody and also nothing that sounded like actual instrumental talent. They may know how to play their instruments, but they do not know HOW to play. Also, the production is terrible. The praise of this album strikes me as some kind of joke. It's that bad. If you want to listen to instrumental rock/metal made by talented muscians who know how to play and write music that is not painfull to listen to, check out Gordian Knot "Emergent."

5 out of 5 stars An Ally to Prog Comprehension.......2006-07-23

Prog rock is usually too much prog and not enough rock, but Dysrhythmia bring some serious metallic intensity to their musicianly prog vision. This all-instrumental combo can truly construct believable instrumental tracks that stand on their own, with no need for words cluttering up the expertly constructed sonic architecture. Drummer Jeff Eber is adept at very tricky prog rock timing patterns but still rocks out boomingly, bassist Colin Marston adds harmony and power almost like a rhythm guitarist, and Kevin Hufnagel on guitar delivers a full range of precision metal riffs and noisy avant-garde anti-riffs. The ultimate Dysrhythmia prog-metal chops can best be heard in piledriving tracks like "An Ally to Comprehension" and "Bus: Terminal," which slowly beat the listener into submission with layer upon layer of sonic power. Also get a load of the imposing wall of sound in "Sleep Decayer," while the album's true centerpiece is the pummeling epic "Seal/Breaker/Void," which manages to sound both ominous and elegant. The only problem track here is "Luminous," which is merely an exercise in atmosphere that goes nowhere musically. But in essence, Dysrhythmia have combined the best sounds from instrumental rock, egghead prog, and technical metal into an impressive sound that might just be a breakthrough. [~doomsdayer520~]

    Album Description

Dennis Russell Davies is one of the world's most inventive conductors. At the forefront of the orchestral, chamber and operatic worlds, he is an articulate and versatile artist respected in both traditional and contemporary music, as well as an accomplished pianist and much-sought after collaborator. As a champion of composer Philip Glass' music, and of many other great contemporary composer's work, he has had significantly helped to enrich concert and operatic repertory around the globe. Currently, Mr. Davis is Chief Conductor of the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra, the Bruckner Orchestra Linz, and the Linz Opera. He is also a Professor of Orchestral Conducting at the Salzburg Mozarteum.

The Tirol Concerto for Piano and Orchestra was commissioned by the Tirol Tourist Board (Tirol Werbung, Tirol/Austria) and had its world premiere at the Tyrol Festival "Klangspuren" in Jenbach, Austria on 22nd September 2000. While staying in the Tyrol, Glass studied sound documents and sheet music of Tyrolese folk-music. In the Tirol Concerto for Piano and Orchestra he used original folk-music source material directly for the first time.

In 1990 Philip Glass and Ravi Shankar—whom Mr. Glass recognizes as "one of his teachers" —collaborated on a recording entitled Passages. This project brought full circle a process that began in 1965, when Glass, a promising young American musician met Indian Sitar master Ravi Shankar in Paris while Glass was earning pocket money doing notation for a soundtrack recording session.

Dennis Russell Davies' close friendship with Philip Glass and his intense understanding and support of Mr. Glass' work has led to many successful collaborations and will, no doubt, result in many more. Orange Mountain Music is proud to present these recordings of the Tirol Concerto for Piano and Orchestra and Mr. Davies' arrangements of Selections from Passages.

    5 out of 5 stars Hypnotic.......2006-11-16

I first heard this haunting and beautiful music several weeks ago when I attended the American Ballet Theatre's fall season to see the world premier of a new work of the popular Finnish choreographer Jorma Elo titled "Glo - Stop" that used a movement from a Mozart Symphony (#28) for the first part and the second movement of this amazing work- "The Tirol Concerto For Piano and Orchestra". Philip holds his own against Wolfgang. Glass's compositions are easily recognizable and this work compares favorably with "In the Upper Room" made famous by the talented choreographer Twyla Tharp. How does one describe the impact on one's emotions of music? I purchased this superb recording by Dennis Russell Davies who plays the piano while conducting the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra and play it over and over. The Concerto is just short of 29 minutes in duration. The Concerto was commissioned by the Tirol Tourist Board and had its world premiere in Austria in September 2000. The CD is rounded out by a 1990 work - "Passages" which Glass wrote in collaboration with Ravi Shanker. This 27-minute work is worth listening to although it does not hold the same spell over me, as does the piano concerto. Lastly, I have no idea why the spelling "Tirol" is used rather than "Tyrol".

5 out of 5 stars A magnificent composition and recording.......2004-12-08

There are passages on this album that make my heart sing! The concerto features themes that are classic Glass without being retreads of past work. Each movement has its moments to savor. Of the three pieces from "Passages" I like Meetings From the Edge the best, with its joyously boisterous woodwind passages. My collection of Glass' work is extensive and although this is the newest, it is already one of my favorites.

As has happened so many times over the years, Philip Glass continues to amaze and delight me with compositions that are at once familiar yet new. This album is further proof of how worthwhile it is to continue this decades-long journey.

Outstanding work. Very Sheharazade-like. Great performance. I first heard this piece played live with the composer in attendance. It is a wonderful experience.
