Another stunning piece of work from Stephen Schwartz.......2005-07-15

How has the, in my opinion, often underrated Stephen Shwartz followed up his massive success of 'Wicked'? Another big budget Broadway blockbuster? Another high-profile movie? No. Instead he has given us a truly beguiling score for a small-scale family musical with a young cast.

The quality of his writing (and, indeed, the performances on this cast recording) is of just as high a quality as 'Wicked', 'Children of Eden' and the neglected gem that is 'The Baker's Wife' (check it out if only to hear the absolutely magical 'Meadowlark').

There are elements of his previous work in 'Captain Louie' (even going back to 'Godspell'), so it is guaranteed that if you like his writing in any way, you will get a huge buzz from this new show.

By the way, don't think that, because this is a cast of young people, the complexity of his writing is in any way compromised - these young people are challenged and more than rise to that challenge!

A True MasterPiece.......2006-04-16

I bought this CD because I heard a short snipet of it on RealPlayer. When I loaded it into my computer and then to my MP3, I was struck with such awe. I haven't been this moved by a gospel CD in a very long time. From the deeply rich musicians who play their instruments like they are are already in the heavenly orchestra, to the choir members who sing like they are in the spirit of God with every note and word. There is no other word for this CD, just amazingly wonderful. Wait until you hear the way "Work It Out" works it out!! ... and "Nothing But The Blood"? Indescribable.

I love every song on this album. The album is very inspirational to listen to while at work or driving with all the things that can happen during the day. Each and every song has something for everyone to get their toes tapping. RUN TELL THAT is my favorite among all the songs. The choir is AWESOME and every piece of music played is AMAZING. Falling Into Place indeed..........2002-06-24

This is the 3rd release from Michael Kelsey, and his strongest. His growth as a musician and songwriter over the three releases is wonderful. He calls his music "Progressive Aggressive Acoustic". If a label must be had, it's as good as any. The quality of Kelsey's uncluttered yet complex music is outstanding. There is honest passion and intensity in every track, and a tendency to reach inside you and touch your soul. He also does things to a guitar which are illegal in most southern states. This CD has music where chord progressions don't do what our pop-deadened ears expect them to do and he constantly defies melody line prisons.

Kelsey's use of vocal harmonies is straightforward. They are used sparingly and rarely for more than 3 phrases at a time. Except for on the tracks "Sarah" and "Each Other's Angels", it is limited to one other voice (which is again Michael's. For that matter, he plays all the instruments on the CD as well). The complexity isn't necessarily from the vocals - it rises from what's playing underneath.

Alternating with songs are instrumental tracks, which sing with a voice all their own. These are not background instrumentals. In fact, this entire CD is not "easy" listening. The music demands and deserves your attention when it's played. And it deserves frequent playings. The drawback of repeated listening, however, is finding that some tracks are just too short.

One of the stronger instrumentals is "One People". This piece is reminiscent of Sting at his most global (this is a good thing) and is way too short at 3 minutes - the track ends just when you really get grooving. It would be great to hear this revisited and re-released in an expanded version. "Love's Last Breath" speaks eloquently of sadness and good-byes without the need of words. "Dreaming in Color" is just an exquisite tune, floating and gliding and carrying the listener along.

Some of the lyrics are, well, true poetry. In "Inside Out", the progression of tenses in the refrain gives a real sense of the journey taken to find the truth it refers to. In "Charade", the mournful, almost melancholy harmonica enhances the bittersweet lyrics of aching desire and difficult choices made. Then there is the kewl funk of "Waterfall" that can bring you to your feet. The sole foray into electric-land, it has a very different sound than anything else on the album. Just some pure funky goodness.

Now all this said, if there is a shortcoming of this and his other CD's, it is that they fail to capture the man's energy. His live shows are just phenomenal. Anything is the room is likely to become part of the evenings entertainment by being transformed into an instrument, with the sound it makes entered into and layered in a loop machine, and then parts of the room becoming instruments, and then... Aw, ya just gotta see it. There is no possible way his shows could sound the same way twice. That spontaneity is missing on his recordings. An interesting question is if even a live recording could begin to capture his boundless energy. His shows are events and have the intoxicating feeling that you don't know quite where he's going, but it's awfully fun, so what the hell, lets go! One warning though - audience participation is required. Prepare to have fun when you see him live.

Until then, "Falling Into Place" and his other CDs ("Gruvency" and the self-titled "Michael Kelsey") are well worth your time.

I have seen Michael Kelsey live a handful of times. Every show offers something new and exciting. He is by far, one of the best performers you could ever hope to see.
This CD will not dissapoint you, but you must see a live show to get the full experience.

Kelsey is a one of a kind guitar excentric. He will impress you with his style and imagination. I have seen live performances in Lafayette, IN - and have never seen an acoustic guitar make so many wonderful sounds since!

First off, I bought the self-titled Michael Kelsey cd after hearing him on solo acoustic guitar in a local music club. I unfairly expected two or three nice cuts and a lot of filler. What I did not expect was the broad spectrum of style he displays. All instruments are played by him which means, more often than not you are hearing his guitar and precious few other instruments; and those in the background. While some may believe that this approach might lead to a "sameness" in sound lacking in variety, this is absolutely not the case. Michael has the ability to keep several balls in the air at any given time. He posesses the rare talent of being able to execute bass, rhythm and lead parts simultaneously. Guys like him scare me. Except for the fact that it's so darn much fun to hear. This is not studio magic either. He is really this good. I've witnessed it firsthand. Oh, yes, and he wrote all of the songs, save two; "Illusion of Fire" and "In Your Eyes." Both are extremely well done, but do not in any sense outshine his own songwriting chops. This fellow can write great songs. My only criticism is also the reason I like this as well as I do. Michael may not be quite commercial enough to enjoy the notoriety I feel he deserves. If you enjoy thoughtful, well-written songs played with panache, then this is the disc for you. If you prefer Top 40, browse on.

I own all of his CD's. I am just waiting for him to explode onto the mainstream. I have seen him perform locally and he puts on the greatest concerts. He is one of my favorite guitarists which include Michael Schenker, Uli Jon Roth, Michael Hedges, EVH, SRV, and of course Jimi. The only this better than his CD's are his live shows. If you get a chance to buy a CD do it. If you get a chance to see him live don't miss it.
