Two of the works recorded here are world premiere recordings: "Made in America" and "Tambor." The first uses "America the Beautiful" as its first melodic theme, and bits of it appear throughout the work. Tower interweaves the melodic fragments with many other original tunes, and she colors the work in what could be called the American idiom, with wide-open spaces. There is a central section of a darker nature, but the work ends in glory. "Tambor" is dominated by percussion of all kinds - drums, blocks, etc. - and is an exciting, propulsive work. There are long periods of solos for percussion instruments that act almost as mini-cadenzas. The Concerto for Orchestra is a terrific work that uses the sections of the orchestra as solos, duets and in bunches. Standout moments are a remarkable tuba solo, a dueling duet for trumpets, and a part for the cellos alone. It's a flavorful, fascinating work. Leonard Slatkin leads the Nashville Symphony in excellent performances. --Robert Levine
Customer Reviews:
Absolutely first class in every respect.......2007-07-19
The is the most outstanding disc to date by the Nashville Symphony. It is the first to feature their new music advisor, Leonard Slatkin, their first in their outstanding new symphony hall in Nashville, and their first with American music from a living composer. And it all comes together perfectly.
The music is first rate, the orchestra is at their best, and the sonics are some of the best heard on CD.
Joan Tower's music is always rhythmically exciting, and she certainly is enjoying a well-deserved Renaissance as she approaches 70. Slatkin has been championing her music for years, and this return to her music is quitting fitting later in both their careers.
"Made in America" is quite a remarkable achievement--an outstanding composition written within the parameters of being playable by most community orchestras. "Tambor" is most definitely a much more demanding work for the musicians, with extraordinary percussion playing required (which Nashville delivers).
But the truly outstanding work is Tower's "Concerto for Orchestra", a brilliant piece of music that not only displays virtuosity, but musicality. It deserves a permanent place in the repertoire.
The Nashville Symphony may have once been a small regional orchestra--but no longer. Their rise in quality and stature is well-deserved, and this disc shows that they are more than capable in handling even the most difficult technically demanding repertoire. The fact that world-class conductor Leonard Slatkin has taken an interest in them speaks volumes.
Most highly recommended.

New Juliana rocks it.......2007-04-12
Another good record here from Juliana Hatfield which features a straight-forward rock sound which is a little grimier than past releases. Some of the songs have a 70's rock feel to them, not unlike the Rolling Stones or perhaps the Pretenders. There's still a few lighter pop gems on here such as the lovely "Hole in The Sky", but my favorite tracks are the dirtier rocked out songs like "Oh", "New Waif", and "Stay Awake". Juliana tries her hand at drums on "Oh" and also plays all the other instruments. Juliana's guitars sound amazing on the record as do her vocals. Most people probably won't get this record as they probably still see Juliana as "that hot alternative chick from the 90's that had that one hit single." F*ck the people.
A Great Review From Marc! (www.julianahatfield.com).......2006-08-13
It's a real shame when an artist gets unfairly lumped in with a 'movement' or a 'scene', because there's a good chance that their commercial shelf life is going to be cut short the minute that journalists run out of nice things to say about their particular fad. In the case of Juliana Hatfield, the press came up with some silly notion that women hadn't made rock music until the early 1990's and exploited every woman with a distortion pedal who mentioned their libido in any form at all. Back in 1993, she was in every magazine's sidebar when they wrote their inevitable "1993 - Year Of The Woman" article, next to PJ Harvey, Bjork and Liz Phair. And sure, those are all decent artists in their own right, (or at least they were at the time... right Liz?), but besides their recording contracts and genitalia, they couldn't have been further removed from each other. When the mainstream press did give her a proper article they were preoccupied with Juliana's unusually high voice, her virginity and her relationship with Evan Dando... everything but the fact that she was one of the best musicians and songwriters to eek out of the nineties alternative rock boom.
From her early days in the Blake Babies until her recent sojurn with the Some Girls side project, Juliana has concurrently exceeded and confounded the expectations of her loyal fan base. When we expected another jangly pop hit like 1993's megasuccessful "My Sister", we got the dark heaviness of the Only Everything album. On the same day in 2000 we got the gorgeous, laid-back and mostly acoustic Beautiful Creature... as well as the mangled and deafening Total System Failure record. When Atlantic refused to release her 1997 album God's Foot for no discernible reason, Juliana went on an unsuccessful hunger strike. When the critics hailed her as the Next Big Thing, she refused to 'smile for the camera', because she felt she hadn't 'earned it'. She's unpredictable for sure, but she can also bust out with some of the most innovative guitarwork since J Mascis.
Most critics (and some stubborn fans) don't want to look past her major label heyday, but it'd behoove any fan of well crafted pop/rock to do so. If you want some slicker-than-turtlewax pop sheen, you gotta check out In Exile Deo. Want some loud, first-take rock with seriously bipolar lyrics? Man, come over and I'll play you Bed from 1998 and follw it up with last year's insidious Made In China. You won't leave my house the same, I assure you.
If it exists in the rock spectrum, you can bet that Juliana Hatfield has tried it and likely improved upon the formula. So why is she so consistently overlooked? As far as I can tell, the cardinal sin of commercial success is following your heart and writing to please yourself, in which case Juliana will continue to be passed over for artists that will show cleavage and flirt with reporters. You'd think that sticking to your guns, being yourself and having an impeccable resume of records under your belt would be enough to set the world on fire. Nope, the world at large will have to settle for hearing "My Sister" and and the jangly hit "Spin The Bottle" on every 'old school weekend' that Modern Rock stations like to do when they are out of ideas. The rest of us will just have to settle for Juliana Hatfield being our little secret.
Damn.
Raw but not rough.......2006-03-08
Having read the previous reviews, I almost did not buy this album. Even what Juliana herself had written on her webpage did not encourage me. It is not as lo-fi as everybody seems to think. Ok it has a rawer sound and more edge than some of her recent stuff but it is still very good. Ths ound is not that bad and it does not seem to be that cheaply made at all. OK, she plays with lots of distortion but she allways has done that. The songs are very beautiful and she really come across as one of the ebst songwriters around.
No glossy production here..........2006-03-04
Juliana Hatfield is a very interesting artist that is just fascinating to watch evolve. 2004's In Exile Deo was a 4-star record that finally helped her recover from some of the prior records that were less impressive (Bed, Total System Failure).
But Made In China is the complete opposite of In Exile. Here Juliana totally revamps her sound and really this doesn't sound like any of her other work. I have only had this album for a few weeks and I like it better than her 90s masterpiece "Become What You Are". But then again maybe I'm a bit biased because I love the lo-fi sound.
It's nice to see an artist who changes styles and experiments and I know I'll be more than happy to see what Hatfield comes up with in the future.
Return of the edge.......2006-01-24
"Made In China" is a breath of fresh air for us fans of the harder, louder, more rockin' side of Juliana Hatfield. Although "In Exile Deo" (her previous release) contained some good stuff, I was beginning to wonder if she'd gone mellow on us. But Juliana, with "Made In China", shows she's still got the crunchy, guitar-driven edge we all love. "My Pet Lion", "Going Blonde", and "What Do I Care?" are right up there with her best stuff ever. And she continues to show amazing talent at writing pop-radio-friendly melodies. It's a shame that she gets no airplay.

a fantastic performance and selection of pieces.......2005-04-21
I think this record is fantastic.
As for the previous poster, I know what you mean. I got this record a couple years ago, listened to it a couple times, liked it ok, but it didn't really hit me. For some reason I picked it up again this week and can't stop listening to it.
The most accessible pieces are the Gershwin preludes, especially the second one, which is one of the real highlights of the album.
The kirchner pieces are amazing, although much less tonal, and maybe a little offputting for people not inclined toward more modern, dissonant music. They are however, well worth spending some time listening to. I especially love the 2nd of the three kirchner compositions presented here.
I think all the musicians do a first rate job, and the quality of the recording is excellent as well.
I don't get it.......2004-12-22
My mother-in-law got me this CD about 2 Christmases ago. I'm sorry; I gave it another try today, and it still sounds like a lot of musical gibberish to me. I don't pretend to be a music critic, but my appreciation of music does range rather widely, from Classical to Country. However, this one just escapes me. I'll rate it a 4. I would rate it lower, but I'm open to the possibility that I'm just too dense to understand it. If this is the case, then I'm inviting anyone who follows my comment with theirs to set me straight.
Proud To Be "Made In America".......2000-10-31
Since the review below isn't very helpful with the particulars of this recording, I thought I'd try to be. "Made In America" features cellist Yo-Yo Ma performing the works of four American composers -- Leonard Bernstein, George Gershwin, Charles Ives and Leon Kirchner. First on the disc is Bernstein's "Clarinet Sonata," which has been transcribed for piano and cello by Ma. As I was not familiar with Lenny the composer (aside from "West Side Story"), I was delighted to discover this refreshing, rocking and rhythmic recording by Ma and pianist Jeffrey Kahane. Since I love Bernstein's conducting, I will definitely keep an eye out for more CDs featuring his compositions as well. The second piece is Kirchner's "Triptych," a dark, haunting piece performed by only Ma in the first movement, and joined by violinist Lynn Chang for the second and third movements. Next is Gershwin's jazzy "Three Preludes," which was originally transcribed for violin and piano by Jascha Heifitz, and here has been done so for cello and piano by Ma. Ma is again accompanied by Kahane on this piece. Charles Ives' nostalgic "Trio for Violin, Cello and Piano" concludes this recording, with Ma joined by pianist Gilbert Kalish and violinist Roman Lefkowitz. In all, this is another stellar performance by one of today's greatest musicians in any genre.
Amazing Cellest.......1999-06-17
Yo-Yo Ma is an inspirational cellist. He does great work and this CD is one amung many exanples of his talent. He is a wonderful musician and a role model for everyone.

Some Political G-Funk Yo Ear.......2006-12-27
Kam can be best compared to Public Enemy and Paris, more so the latter because they're both reppin' the west. It's definitely substantive, which is unusual for a style that is generally thought of as minimalistic. Kam's 2nd effort, "In America" is a milestone in terms of gangsta funk beats alone, featuring some of the best and most complex beats to ever grace the subgenre...The subject-matter...unity, self-determination and political awareness is just as uplifting and fresh. DJ Battlecat, Warren G and DJ Quik give us the beats and Kam, with his clear articulate rap flow (one of the best in the business), provides plenty of food for thought. The album sports 1 classic and the rest (yes the other 11) are all near classics. This album is as consistent as anything that has ever come out in the west...All Eyez on Me, Regulate, Safe & Sound and Classic 220, are maybe the only exceptions.
The classic on this album is "Keep tha Peace" with Warren G on the boards. Beautiful laid-back beat along the lines of "This DJ" and "Transformers." The bass and synths are beautifully used and the implementation of a Snoop g-funk song on the hook is ingenious. Obviously Kam has something to say about his peers and even himself, but he doesn't preach. The song, simply, echoes what "Boyz n the Hood" called for a year earlier. Next we have "Down Fo Mine" featuring veterans MC Ren and Dresta. The beat is one of the funkiest on the album and really epitomizes what was so special about the g funk era. Kam hits us with "Trust Nobody" and "Way a Life" two great songs with Battlecat on the boards. I never appreciated his production skills until "In America" but this man has it. Bouncing beats, softs syths and a little vocoder here and there and DJ Battlecat has solidified himself among the legendary. With only a few exceptions, no one on the boards these days has created beats this good. "In Traffic" is a nice one with the excellent sample taken from "Pumpin it Up" by Parliament. Finally, "Pull Ya Ho Card," "Givin it Up," "That's My N---a" with Quik doing his p-funk thing and "Nut'n Nice" are also worth mentioning. They grow better with each listen, as does the whole album.
In a way, owning this album makes me feel sophisticated. Like a jazz fan playing a rare Miles Davis recording, whenever I play "In America," people take notice. Most rap fans don't know rap ever sounded like this, haters, that rap could EVER sound like this. Fans of Kam know what's really up, what's really true. With the exception of a little excessive militancy here and there, Brother Kam has a classic on his hands. He's supposed to be dropping a new album sometime this month so keep a look out!
4.5/5
Deep Lyrics, Awesome Beats.......2006-06-21
Kam's 2nd album, Made In America is an absolute classic. He raps about life, and focuses many of his bars on solutions. One prime example is the classic "Keep Tha Peace." First, Warren G laces Kam with one of the best G-Funk beats in rap history. I love the keyboards and the background rap samples in the hook. Kam spits fire about trying to maintain unity and not let negative outside influences color one's self. Battelcat also burns the wax with a few smokin beats. Just listen to how the beat develops in the beginning of "Way'a Life" and "Trust Nobody." Those are also among some of the finest G-Funk beats ever conceived. A lot of times R&B hook vocals in G-Funk may be average, but the hook vocals in both tracks sound dope. Kam is an intelligent and humble rapper, and it's fresh to hear him compared to flossy, Benz drivin' gangbangers. Phat Bay Area producers E-A Ski and CMT lace up a melodic beat in "Pull Ya Hoe Card," where Kam raps cleverly about dishonorable bustas in the game. DJ Quik serves heat in the "That's My N---a" beat with that P-Funk influence he is well-known for. Made In Americe is an absolute classic from start to finish with much more to offer than what I just mentioned. One can write an entire essay about this release.
Brotha Kam!! 4.5 stars.......2006-03-27
Yeah I just gotta agree with the other guys. This album is simply too dope. Kam is far from your "show-off/blingbling" type rapper. With down to earth real situations displayed over Battlecat, Warren G and Big Hutch (from Above The Law) beats this album is just overly enjoyable and just a really good experience.
don't sleep on this.......2005-11-26
beyond a doubt- don't sleep on this. if you can find this, it is worth paying good money for. some of the best work from Battlecat. Kam is off the hook on the lyrics. this is a lyrically deap record and a must have.

DON'T WASTE YOUR LIFE!!!.......2006-12-05
Here they go again.. damn record company sponges/leeches.. Hey, if you're reading this, here's an idea for an Aerosmith re-re-re-release.. Re-do PUMP and rename it MILK IT, cos that's just what you're doing!
Short, but sweet.......2006-11-13
The only 2 reasons for anyone getting this release are the studio version of Chip Away The Stone and the live version of One Way Street.
But that said, the only way for anyone to get those 2 tracks outside of this release is to pick up Gems for Chip Away The Stone and one of the many bootlegs containing the radio broadcast of their show at Mama Kin Music Hall, December 19, 1994 for One Way Street.
Gems is not worth it. Chip Away The Stone is the only new track on that release. The Mama Kin show, on the other hand, is worth having since it is a really good show. But you'll have to seek out an unofficial source.
As for the other tracks on this release...well, at least none fall into the "Angel" category and all are remastered.
Chances are you'll pay more for postage than for the actual CD (I did).
Buy it simply for Track #6.......2005-03-06
I actually obtained this CD from a friend who knows that I am a huge Aerosmith fan. Overall, it is a neat CD to have for your music collection. But ultimately I recommend purchasing this CD simply for Track #6. The outstanding live version of "One Way Street" is a perfect representation of Aerosmith at is "baddest". The song is a perfect mixture of rock, rhythm, and blues (along with musical solos) that gives the listener the perfect taste of what Aerosmith music is all about.
Kinda Pointless to own But Each song is a classic!.......2003-09-07
Every song here is an Aerosmith classic through and through. If You are an Aerosmith fan you already own every song on here. 'Back In The Saddle' is from Rocks, 'Toys In The Attic' and 'Walk This Way' are both from Toys In The Attic, 'Seasons Of Wither' from Get Your Wings, 'Chip Away The Stone' is from Gems, and 'One Way Street [live]' is from Aerosmith, but wait its live so you dont own it... yet! This is worth buying just for the live version of 'One Way Street' the studio version is amazing but this is even better! The guitar solo is flawles, and I have seen Aerosmith live 4 times, and heard all of their live albums and they have never sounded better then they do here. It was recored live in '94 at the club MaKIN that Steven Tyler used too own. Look its worth it for that one song but you also get all those other great songs aswell. This is only an EP so its probly for Die Hards like myselve only!

More wind works by American Masters.......2000-07-10
For those familiar with the Corporon series of recordings, this is no surprise. The wholly remarkable 'Piece of Mind' and the wonderful, poignant 'Schweik' were my reasons for purchasing the album. Two wonderful works. I know less about the other works, but they are well-wrought examples of the styles of their authors. The finest available musicians from one of the nation's best music schools, with demonstration-quality sound, to boot. If you enjoy serious wind music, you've got to love this. Good stuff - five stars.

Made in America by John Eaton.......2001-05-22
This CD is a disappointment to me, I bought it on the strength of his marvellous playing on the CD by Wild Bill Davison titled "Lady of the Evening". If you like cocktail type piano playing, this is for you as in this respect it is very good. But if you like a swinging piano, save your money.
longtime fan.......2000-09-07
Eaton is one in a million among playing tunes of the 20's, 30's,40's, and early 50's. He plays every tune lovinglyin a straight forward way.To me that is giving the composer of the tune credit in knowing how his/her tune should be played Most jazz artists today play the first few notes as written--after which they take off into a world their oun leaving the listener hanging inthe air. Eaton also at the end of the disk gives a short talk about the composers of the tunes he has just played. that puts the icing on the cake.
