    5 out of 5 stars I love these guys!!!.......2007-01-02

At first I did not know anything about LAGQ. I was taking an intro to guitar class on the campus of USC. One of my assignments was to attend two guitar performances happening on campus and write about each. I was so fortunate to have picked LAGQ. I fell in love with their music and their humor. I was amazed by the variety of sounds coming out of the guitars. Although guitar playing is a hobby for me... these guys inspire me to study the guitar more seriously. This is the first album of theirs I bought. Their rendition of Shenandoah is the best. It is so beautiful I fall asleep to it. Simple Gifts is the most lovely version too. Jumpin' at the Woodside is another favorite... it jazzy bounce makes it a popular choice for background music to any situation. The Main Street Electrical Parade never fails to delight me and surprise my friends when I play it. These guys are silly...but in a good way. Its 2007 now and I still go back to the songs on this album. Great variety. This is a good starter to a LAGQ collection. Go see them live if you can!!!

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent album.......2004-11-23

Recently I learned about LAGQ and bought this album. I have been impressed by the arrangements and interpretation, the texture, innovative touches and originality. It is a treat!

3 out of 5 stars This is only a warning.......2004-09-19

The LAGQ are fine players, and the music here is first rate as a summary of what they do, or for any purpose. HOWEVER, the transfer to CD on my disc was very poorly chosen, so that the top octave and a half was mostly missing (worse on some pieces than others, though). This takes the snap! out of guitar strings and notably attenuates your ability to tell what the 4 are doing with guitar timbre and the like. So, if you have wide-range audio gear, you might want to look elsewhere for an introduction to these players.

5 out of 5 stars Recent Purchase that I'm Joyed to Find and Enjoy.......2001-01-27

Not until recently did I know about this guitar four. Hearing a number of their songs on internet classical radio, I decided I'd try this one.

What a great surprise --- their arrangements of Copeland to Sousa to Praetorius are excellent and in taste. I'll be venturing into their other works.

    5 out of 5 stars Simply Amazing.......2000-06-12

LAGQ is wonderful and this CD is a great compilation of some of their best work to date. Extremely versatile musicians, they perform swing music, Sousa march music, a Main Street Electrical Parade tune from Disneyland, as well as music by Copland and Praetorius. It's amazing how they are able to produce the sounds they do. A great compilation and one that would nicely add to your LAGQ collection or a great CD to start that collection!

Know by Heart is an apt title for the fourth album by the American Analog Set. Often practitioners of the art of "futuristic" music usually make one crucial mistake: in their quest to replicate the synthetic sheen of a dark, mechanical tomorrow, they often end up completely obliterating every trace of humanity. Fortunately, Texan new wave rockers the American Analog Set are wise to this: the sleeve to Know by Heart--featuring two guitar leads, loosely coiled into a heart shape--smartly points out that there's a very human warmth in the depths of this circuitry. As it happens, for the most part, Know by Heart is a pretty relaxed take on rock experimentalism: AAF seem intrigued by the prospect of crafting pretty nuggets of tune out of the most atypical building blocks--drone, repetition, feedback, and a studied and a largely successful restraint. The studied motorik of "Like Foxes Through Fences" recalls--and betters--the design of Brit experimentalists Appliance, while on the beautiful but uncharacteristically named "Punk as Fuck," the band crafts a post-rock love song out of chiming guitars and velvety instrumental harmonies. The American Analog Set succeed because they put the songs--and a whole lotta love--right at the center of their design. It's far from the stuff of a dark future, but frankly, more bands should follow their lead. --Louis Pattison

5 out of 5 stars I don't know what it is with this band.......2006-01-03

I feel kinda nervous writing this now, I saw that Alec Empire didn't like this album, it makes me kind of wonder about what I think of it. I do like it. A lot, maybe more than I should. It's simple really. There are songs and there are songs, but Amanset's songs just feel so natural sometimes. Way more than your average run of the mill Green Day or Blink blands. They had some heart and soul about it. There's very real feelings on display, this one has to be their best in my opinion.

5 out of 5 stars Like ice cream for the soul.......2005-10-04

There is not a single song on this CD that I have not liked. Every song, though mellow and thick slowcore, contain melodic sounds you will rarely hear anywhere else. With songs like "Gone to Earth" and "Like Foxes Through Fences" that simply lull you into a feeling of musical enjoyment, this CD will progress you through a kaleidoscope of musical creativity that provides an aura of sensations very uneasily described.

5 out of 5 stars One Of Indie's Most Overloooked Outfits.......2005-01-18

The American Analog Set makes some of the most lovely low-key indie rock, a mixture of warm strummed guitar, steady beats, vibes, analog synths, and Andrew Kenny's whisper of a voice. The unassuming songs are perfect tools for unwinding, but despite the subdued tones, the record never bores. The ironically-titled opener "Punk As F*ck" is a great place to start, while "The Postman," "The Kindness Of Strangers," "Million Young," and "Aaron And Maria" meld the quieter moments of Yo La Tengo with jazzy undertones lifted from Tortoise and other post-rock outfits. Know By Heart is not so much revolutionary as it is just simply strong and affecting.

5 out of 5 stars Sending me a postcard from the sands...........2003-11-08

This is AmAnSet's most easily accessible album, by far. It features a couple of instantly catchy short pop songs as well as some instrumentals and longer pieces -- definitely a culmination of their growth as musicians through all their albums and EPs up to this point.

The American Analog Set is definitely a band to be experienced live -- as beautiful as this album is, seeing them perform these songs live (and completely CLICK as a live band, flowing from one song to the next smoothly and effortlessly) will bring the music to a whole different level. [Also note: any band that tours with a vibraphone has my undying support!]

For the record, one of my friends deemed this the "makeout album of the year", which is probably the best description you'll ever hear. Highly, highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars For those looking for a bit of fresh air.......2003-05-27

I was looking for something new that I could really fall in love with. The sound of this record is amazing, and it shows some of the finest production I have seen for this band. If you like progressive rock and a new sound in your ears get this album. I am sure fans of Yo La Tengo, Wilco, Minus 5,and My Morning Jacket will love this album just for its feel. Even though this album tends to get lower ratings than the other albums, it is a better introduction into their music and in my opinion one of their best.

Gatemouth Brown has come full circle. The Texan launched his recording career back in 1947 with a big band behind him; more recently, first with 1997's Gate Swings album and now this follow-up effort, he's again achieving transcendence alongside a large ensemble. Brown remains a marvelous guitar picker, adding poignant commentary to the broken love plaint "Guitar in My Hand" (his update of a tune from 1947). He reacts to the horn and rhythm sections with taut, witty, jazz-inflected responses on swinging treatments of Duke Ellington's "I'm Beginning to See the Light" and the Kansas City blues-jazz anthem "Jumpin' the Blues." Oh yes, Brown has tremendous command of guitar textures--declarative, subdued, greasy, sensual, prickly, and more. He's an expert fiddler too--note "Rock My Blues Away." And he shows considerable individuality and wisdom as a singer, waxing plaintive on Percy Mayfield's "Strange Things Happen" and assuming a devilishly matter-of-fact attitude for his Lone Star State shuffle "Without Me Baby," where singer Kaye Doran adds to the fun. In all, "American Music, Texas Style" (also Brown's favorite description of the music he plays; don't ever call it "blues"!) is yet another triumph for the cantankerous bandleader. --Frank-John Hadley

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Big Band or Blues.......2005-12-12

Yes a good album, but a bit overproduced. Many tracks sound more like big band rather than the talented guitar blues that Mr. Clarence Brown is renowned for.

    5 out of 5 stars a must have.......2001-12-29

Wow. Clarence 'Gatemouth' Brown should be an american treasure. Blues guitarist, fiddle player, jazz musician, big band leader, delta vocalist; he does it all. And this is a great place to start exploring an american icon (or should be). He fuses big band swing with jazz and blues with a hint of Texan country music. I don't know how to categorize it other that great. If you can find his previous cd 'Gate swings' get it as well. And I am now waiting on my recently ordered 'Back to Bogalusa' to arrive to continue the journey of muscial appreciation of a great american musician.

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2001-09-16

I am a blues lover...but this is something special. Gatemouth Brown is able to fuse blues and jazz and swing into something special. If you like original music of any kind this is must!

5 out of 5 stars Saw him live, had to get the CD!.......2000-09-16

I first heard of "Gatemouth" Brown when I saw him live at the Kansas City Jazz & Blues Festival in August 2000. He was playing on the 'heritage' (read older folks) stage, along with other luminaries such as Myra Taylor and Claude "Fiddler" Williams.

Even into his seventies, he is a great live performer, and a lifetime of practising 'working the crowd' showed through strongly. He did one of the best jazz violin solos I have heard too, as well as great guitar work.

This album covers a range of his work and shows his command of a variety of instruments. For those who like to 'spice up' their jazz, it is strongly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars The Blues meet Swing.......2000-04-19

Bought it on a whim, and am happy I did. This collection ranges from rootsy blues to swing and jazz. It works on all levels, bringing the three styles together in a tight package that sets you smiling. It's different, and it's good.

3 out of 5 stars Promise of Love.......2006-01-31

The American Analog Set's first two albums, The Fun of Watching Fireworks and From Our Living Room To Yours, are full of long and simple, but lovingly hypnotic songs. With The Golden Band and Know By Heart, they shortened the lengths but kept their signature sound and musical sensibilities (quiet is the new loud). To me, Promise of Love is a mixture of these two kinds of albums.
The lengths run from 2:13 (Promise of Love) to 8:02 (Modern Drummer/Continuous Hit Music reprise). The album starts with "Continuous Hit Music," one of their loudest songs. "Hard to Find," with it's rubbery guitar and circuitous drum beat, is the most accessible track on the album and best displays their strengths; repetitious melodies, vibraphone, and whisper vocals. The middle of the album sags because the flow of the album is broken; The slithering "You Own Me," the quick flash "Promise of Love," and the funky drumbeat of "The Hatist." My favorite track, and the album's closer, is "Modern Drummer." The song rides on hi-hat, guitar and keyboard for a bit, then adds vibraphone, a hint of cello, and the vocals. It's a very peaceful ending to a nice, yet uneven album.
If you are an AmAnSet beginner, it's best to start with Know By Heart. If you're already a fan, you'll find something to like on this record.

5 out of 5 stars Best Song Ever.......2004-09-03

I heard the song "Hard to Find" on an episode of One Tree Hill and loved it. It's now my favorite song of all time. Anything I've heard by American Analog Set has been outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars One of those albums that you keep coming back to.......2004-09-01

Mellow tunes with enough grit and edge to keep you coming back for more. Thinking person's chill music. Especially strong: "Fool Around," "Julie come home," and "Continuous Hit Music."

    5 out of 5 stars Momagoganu Plant.......2004-03-28

When I first listened to this C.D at my local Hear Music outlet, I pondered is there more to this record then the name, "Promise of Love?" The answer is yes-unequivocally yes-for this reasonably unheard band packs a punch which the Britney Spears craving public could not withstand. This public, which may become bored by the supposed reduntancy of tracks like "Continuous Hit Music" and "Come Home, Come Home Baby Julie," do not fully comprehend the music which American Analog Set is playing. This band is a prototype for which future generations will wish to exemplify. In conclusion, to most this C.D may be monotonous to the untamed eye but to the superior minds of our materialistic society this record will slowly relinquish your worries into a Momafoganu Plant.

4 out of 5 stars Don't use your skip track button.......2004-02-20

I have been following AAS since 'From Our Living Room to Yours' and have enjoyed all their albums. Their latest release, at first listen, was a bit droney and guitar heavy. I was expecting more of the '...Living Room...' floaty, beat drive songs.

One subsequent plays though, I have begun to enjoy the depth of sounds this record has and displays the different layers a song can have. This type of songmaking is very refreshing in today's uni-dimensional, pop music landscape and makes this album one of the few in that category of records you can listen to, end to end, without skipping a track. You would be hard pressed to find a radio single on this album, but as a complete work, this record is very rich and very good.

This miraculous recital was Chang's debut recording, made when she was nine years old. In Sarasate's Carmen Fantasy you can hear some very minor flaws in the technique, which were gone when I heard her play it two years later. There's nothing else to indicate that this is a young violinist, not even the tone Chang draws from a quarter-size violin. While none of these pieces is very heavy in musical content, she shows a wide range of sympathies, from the singing lyricism of Chopin to a very hip-sounding "It Ain't Necessarily So" from Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. --Leslie Gerber

5 out of 5 stars Sarah Chang -- unparalleled even at 9!.......2001-01-20

What can I say that does not smack of praise for this debut album by one of the most gifted young violinists ever of the millennium?

The one thing that I find lacking in most violinists' playing is ... fire. Oh, of course, techincal ability ranks high on the list but one has to agree that most of the prodigial virtuosi we've heard so far have most of that particular area of playing down-pat. Chang certainly has the lightning-quick fingers required for virtually all of the songs she plays here, but as the Amazon.com review states -- she also plays with a good deal of _bite_. The deciding pieces are, in no particular order: Sarasate's very famous miniatures from Carmen, the Sabre Dance from Gayane (wonderfully played, with the tempo bright and fast-moving), Gershwin's It Ain't Necessarily So (when I first heard this track, I was in heaven! What jazzy playing for one so young! The violin literally sings and swoons in her capable hands), and Prokofiev's March from The Love of Three Oranges. The last piece, compared to Midori's version (which can be found on her "Encore!" CD), I feel, is better performed -- the speed and spear-driven flashes of the bow are just right. Midori overperforms on a song that's supposed to be a march.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting historical document.......1999-01-06

Immaculate technique, remarkably good tone for a quarter-sized violin, and wonderful musicality for a nine-year-old. Of course, she still has some room for improvement artistically.

Her interpretation of Gershwin's "It ain't necessarily so" is the most sensuous (almost lascivious!) one I've ever heard--such abundant, luscious, provocative slides! Nonetheless, I love it!

This disc is an interesting historical document: hear how well a nine-year-old human can play. No other violinist in history ever recorded at such a young age.

5 out of 5 stars The Miracle Guitarist with a "Whole Band" in his hands..........2001-04-27

Guy Van Duser is a musical marvel.... an "eighth wonder" on six strings. A musician can be competent as a "technician" and lack feeling and expression, and, alternatively they can play with limited skill and boundless enthusiasm. Guy combines unmatched technical guitar skill with an equally unmatched artistic flair. I am reminded of the scene in the film "Amadeus" where another musical genius, Mozart, is told by the Emperor Joseph that his latest composition has "too many notes" and some should be removed. Mozart asks "which notes" the Emperor has in mind. Listening to Guy Van Duser would probably fluster a musical midget like the former Emperor - Guy plays notes with bell-like clarity and blistering speed in fabulous and meticulous arrangements that nearly overwhelm the ear. This CD is crammed with examples, but if you want to hook someone on GVD with a single tune - play them the live recording of Guy's arrangement of "Stars and Stripes Forever" - initially you think "cool... listen to that - I never really thought of a Sousa march as a solo guitar piece". Then, you listen a bit longer and you think "wow... listen to that - he got the trombones too".... then a bit longer your jaw drops as you realize he's playing, at the same time, the trombones.... the whole damn orchestra... AND that bouncy piccolo part - all at the same time. Did he suddenly sprout extra hands?! How the devil does he DO that? Do yourself a favor and listen to this album. You and Guy Van Duser's will never be separated for long after that.

5 out of 5 stars Six Swinging Strings.......2001-04-01

I got this album for "Never Gonna Dance", and because I had once tried to learn a Guy Van Duser arrangement, which put me in my place, guitar-wise. Anyway, there are many ways to praise this album, but I will choose just one - "That Certain Feeling". He takes this from George Gershwin's relentlessly rhythmical rendition of his own tune and manages to transfer it to guitar, keeping the drive and the riffs intact. A great tribute, and a remarkable performance. There aren't many who could play it on piano, much less guitar.

The album was released in 1987, but is really a compendium of material from 3 earlier releases, now apparently unavailable, so this is welcome. There is over an hour of fine guitar, occasional clarinet (also fine), and a lovely session of whistling which makes one wonder why nobody does that kind of thing any more.

5 out of 5 stars One listen, you'll kick yourself for quitting guitar lessons.......1999-10-20

I first heard this album years ago on WBAI (Commie, Pinko public radio station in NYC) and it was so exciting that I immediately had to have it. (That was so far back, it was only available on vinyl.) The Western Medley and Stars and Stripes Forever are the top cuts but As Time Goes By is a classic too. If you like solo guitar, this is one album you can put on and listen completely through without having to skip the "bad cuts" - there aren't any here. This is one of my favorite albums and now that I've found it on CD, it can travel with me in the car and make me happy, even in bumper to bumper traffic.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......1998-12-15

Guy successfully transcribed old and familiar music into guitar piece. Will I be able to find tabulature for the whole CDs?

1 out of 5 stars SHE PLAYS OUT OF TUNE!.......2005-08-16

Yes, she does: her sound is horribly thin, and she can't play the highest notes strong enough, so that they wither away and disappear into silence. Even the darkest, lowest notes come out weakly, so one can't argue that she has trouble just with the upper registers: her whole playing is terribly bad. She does have
a good vibrato, but I fear that if her sound were not thin, the vibrato would make even the darkest melody sound pathetic.

Hahn is all right (not excellent, nor good, just right for
some provincial recital hall) as long as she keeps to the lower pitch range (perhaps she should be playing the bass fiddle!), Shaham does everything only passably, and Chang has some passion and feeling but no strength to express it, but Salerno-Sonnenberg is bad across the board. There maybe a passably competent technique in her playing (that is, she can get the melody across), but she plays out of tune - the sound is disgusting!

I know how crazy this piece of writing must sound among so many raves, but there's no other way to explain the horribly weak, thin sound of the violin in this recording. Perlman, who suffered all his life from weak health, even in such difficult pieces as Beethoven's Kreutzer sonata was able to produce a full-bodied sound - and this, when he was well past his sixties.

But then again, Salerno-Sonnenberg is not alone in showing such a lack of... no, this is not about inborn talent. I doubt some child can pick up a violin and play in tune without first listening to a competent elder's playing. After the most basic education in music performance, it is just a question of getting a good recording of a piece, and practicing till one gets a relatively equal sound.

I harbored great hopes for Salerno-Sonnenberg when I read about her troubled life, the attacks she had to face from critics, her attempted suicide. I was letting myself be deceived by that old Romantic cliché, that pain makes for good art. But this is not about discovering or rediscovering unknown masterpieces, but about interpreting establish ones, and a Paganini doesn't have the "extended techniques" present in many postmodern pieces where noise passes for music, so in this case a standard called in-tune playing exists, and she doesn't perform up to it. But this judgement depends on my senses. If you don't believe me, you can find out whether I am right, or whether I am just another flea-like critic from the incestuous music business, by comparing Salerno-Sonnenberg's playing to that of any famous solo violinist whose career started in the 60's or 50's - when gesticulating wasn't equated with playing.

      5 out of 5 stars Perfection.......2004-11-02

Salerno-Sonnenberg's passionate, elegant, heartbreaking interpretations of these wonderful selections is perfectly paired with Sandra Rivers at the piano. I shall never forget their performance of "Claire de lune," the Kreisler pieces, or the exquisite Rachmaninov "Vocalise." In her hands, the violin becomes voice and reeds and brass -- transcending itself and taking the audience right along.

5 out of 5 stars Soul Quenching Expression.......2003-10-12

Making great music lies in the ability to express things words can't, to touch the soul, capture the moment and move the heart.

It takes a great artist to perform great music!

Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg is such an artist and this release is one of her many gifts to the music loving world!

5 out of 5 stars Fire and Passion!.......2000-11-14

Check out Track #5 - Liebesieid - for a small sampling of the tremendous emotional pull of Nadja's playing. I have several CDs of Itzhak Perman, and Anne-Sophie Mutter, but no violinist matches Nadja's gift of making each piece her own - you know that she truely feels the music - it flows through her - and it isn't just a dry technical playing of the piece.

      5 out of 5 stars Salerno-Sonnenberg: Adroit and Emotional.......1999-07-05

What separates Salerno-Sonnenberg from other violinists is the pure emotion conveyed in her music. The power, sorrow or joy she expresses at any given moment is almost palpable. In fact, I remember listening to the first track on It Ain't Necessarily So and literally getting goosbumps. It's a stunning Kreisler piece that steadily builds in strength and tempo. Sonnenberg capitalizes on these elements, offering an unforgettable delivery. Many of the tracks on the album emit such raw energy -- It Ain't Necessarily so is not an album that will put one to sleep. Beyond strength, what makes this album worthwhile is the diverse selection of music. Of course Salerno-Sonnenberg interprets Kreisler, but she also plays Gershwin, Kroll, Schubert and even the jazz of Scott Joplin. The one complaint I have about this album is the sonics. For such a great musician, I think EMI could have recorded a little bit more dynamically. But don't let this keep you from owning the album. It's a truly great one.

I would have to agree with Erik, This is some of Ozma's greatest stuff. This record has more of a fun vibe than RaRP3, though both being equally good, DDD really shines through with such songs as Flight of the Bootymaster and COntinental Drift. If you want some awesome music pick up Rock and Roll part three and DDD, you won't regret it.

      5 out of 5 stars Fetchin' sweet.......2004-08-01

This "album" is an incredible show of musicianship. I own all three of Ozma's discs, and many of their unreleased stuff, and I've gotta say that this is their best work. The keys are fine tuned and incredible, as is the painfully beautiful flute used on some of this album. This "album" comprises two EP's:The Russian Coldfusion EP and The Bootytraps EP

      1. Flight of Yuri Gagarin - Not bad at all. A nice little intro to start things off and to kind of get to the theme of the rest of the CD. 8/10

      2. No One Needs To Know - Basically a guy telling his girl to keep a few secrets. Ryen Slegr and Daniel Brummel's voices harmonize quite while on this song.8/10

      3. Korobeiniki(Traditional Russian Folk Song) - You might recognize this tune. It's the theme from Tetris, but totally rocked out. No words, straight instrumental, but is it ever one helluva instrumental. 10/10

4.You Know The Story - Really good. The keyboard integrates really nicely in there, almost so you don't notice it but can't help but love it. Once again Slegr and Brummel harmonize very well on this one. 9/10

      5. The Landing of Yuri Gagarin - This and track 4 run together to make kind of a super song. This is the last song of the Russian Coldfusion EP, and does it ever end it right. Drums are incredible, some of the sweetest I've heard. 9/10

      6. The Business of Getting Down - Great. The lyrics in this one are really cool. I especially like the line "When I woke up this morning, I knew what I had to find/Somewhere there exists a melody that'll make you change your mind." 10/10

      7. Maybe In An Alterante Dimension - The opening guitar is wicked tight. Goes from a rock sound to almost a blues riff in less than 30 seconds. One you can really jam out to. 9/10

      8. Immigration Song - A bit slower, but still very nice. The guitar in here is pretty cool. And the drums keep a pretty good tempo. 8/10

      9. Flight of The Bootymaster - Personally, this is my favorite song on the CD. I love everything about it, from the drums to guitar to lyrics. It's just all around incredible.10/10

      10. Continental Drift - A good way to end the whole CD. Remember when I said how painfully beautiful the flute was when it was used? Well this is the song. The bass in this one, by Daniel Brummel, is subtle yet catchy. 9/10

Overall, it's a incredible CD. It's a must buy. Especially since the band has decided to call it quits, it's a great cd to add to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Most of their best songs are on here.......2003-10-06

I guess I'll start out by commenting about Weezer, since it's impossible not to. I've always maintained that Ozma doesn't so much SOUND LIKE Weezer, as occasionally sound like they are playing songs written by Weezer. I think both Daniel and Ryen are better singers than Rivers and everyone in the band is a better musician than anyone in Weezer. And, really, none of the songs on here sound like Weezer songs. The only Ozma songs that really do, I think, are Natalie Portman, In Search of 1988 (from the Blue album or Pinkerton), and Bad Dogs (by far the worst Ozma song, sounds straight off Maladroit). Anyway, I like Rock and Roll Part 3 more than either of Weezer's first 2 albums, and I like this at least as much as the Blue Album, and probably as much as Pinkerton.
That said, the only problem with this album is that it's not really an album. It's just two of their old EPs put together, and as such, is not really cohesive in the way Rock and Roll Pt. 3 is. Still, Continental Drift is my favorite Ozma song, and I like ALL of the songs on the last half of this as much as any of the songs on R&R Pt. 3 except for Baseball. The first EP on here is also great and right up there with the best Ozma songs. You can never go wrong with Ozma, in any case. I only hope they stick away from stuff like Bad Dogs in the future, or they'll go the way of Weezer.

      4 out of 5 stars ozma.......2003-06-09

Ozma is great, and what if they do sound a bit like Weezer? If that is someone's sole basis for not liking the group, then you must not be able to like any punk groups, seeing as most all of them have the same vocals and sound. This does not mean punk is a bad thing, nor does it mean Ozma is a bad band. On the contrary, Ozma is the most refreshing thing since Weezer if not more so. They also use more synthesizing than Weezer, giving a more original sound.

4 out of 5 stars Have I heard this before?.......2003-05-20

I bought this cd because I thought it was right, even though I've heard all but one of the songs on this album courtesy of Ozma's free mp3 site...and Kazaa. I really admire this band for trying hard to be creative by adding fun little twists in their songs. They don't sound like another starry-eyed band out there to make money. The reason I like them is because they aren't bland like their more well-known pop/rock/punk counterparts...Their sound is totally unoriginal and by that I mean the Weezer-distortion. They've got the dials turned exactly. But that isn't a bad thing because they've got plenty more merit than a cover band. They're better than the last half of Weezer but fall short from the 1st half, the blue album and Pinkerton. These songs are poppy, witty and laced with pleasant harmonies. The last song, "Continental Drift," features the keyboard player, Star Wick, on flute. Although you have to wonder, doesn't she get bored playing those simple backing melody lines over and over again? I highly recommend this disk and Ozma's other two to people who enjoy Weezer, Jimmy Eat World and mainstream "punk." It just might raise your standards for good music.
