This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The 1950 film Young Man with a Horn has a special place in the iconography of jazz as the first full-scale Hollywood treatment of the jazz musician as tortured genius, with Kirk Douglas first essaying the role he would later perfect as Vincent van Gogh in Lust for Life. Though the film was based very loosely on the life of Bix Beiderbecke, his introspective music was jettisoned in favor of more conventional, flamboyant, bravura trumpeting (suggesting Bunny Berigan as an alternative model for the self-destructive hero). At the time, Doris Day was making the transition from band singer to a specialist in "good girl" movie roles, and she does a fine job on the film's torchy standards, especially "With a Song in My Heart," singing with a clear, distinctive voice that is so unaffected that it seems like a conduit for a songwriter's intentions. Harry James brings his rhythmic drive and sparkling technique to the soundtrack's hybrid of swing and '20s jazz, while his gorgeous sound is most striking on the lush, frankly Gershwin-inspired "Melancholy Rhapsody." --Stuart Broomer

The album is representative Doris Day 1950. BUT if you have heard the actual film version you will be disappointed. Her performance on this album is very perfunctory to say the least.She sings with everything she`s got in the film version. The trouble is that singers tend to perform under stringent standards for the motion picture and give an indifferent approach to the commercial recording. Examples abound: FRANK SINATRA performed without much expression the song Someone to Watch Over Me in the commercial soundtrack album. He gave a classic rendition in the actual film, emotion and all. BARBRA STREISAND did the same for The Way We Were. Need I say more. Still, this album is very good value.

My favourite Doris song is "With a Song in my Heart" But as far as I know it has'nt been recorded as a one off as such. OK there must be many of us fans that have edited the film music to get the complete song on tape, but I don't believe it was ever recorded as a complete performance comercially. Unless you can tell me different. The balls in your court. I await your reply before I buy.

The R&B/salsa hybrid known as boogaloo was extremely popular during the late 1960s and early '70s and most of the songs here reflect this. The inclusion of boogaloo-flavored tracks with traditional salsa numbers and slow tempo boleros make this album very interesting.

first saw the film 'Young Man With A Horn' more than thirty five
years ago when already it was an old movie rerun on late night TV. It features soaring-wonderful-renditions of old jazz standards played by Harry James; but you see actor Kirk Douglas
pretending to actually play the trumpet, in the role of famous
jazz-star, Bix Viderbeck-a short lived great. Douglas's very good acting-paired with beautiful Doris Day's marvelous singing;
joined by a strong supporting cameo-role of sultry-siren, supplied by Lauren BaCall-creates a vivid,sad and realistic story of a young raw talent who becomes an overnight success...
Only to succumb to wrack and ruin in self-torturing fashion.
Bix at last comes to his senses at the end of the movie, enjoying
a brief and glorious comeback; realizing finally that his original dream of making beautiful-dazzeling-music with the right people are what put a song in his heart and made it all
possible in the first place. 'Young Man With A Horn' is a splendidly told "rags to riches" story, told in the professional
way that only 'Old Hollywood' could and DID deliver...I highly
recommend this music CD and film; 'Young Man With A Horn' for
everyone who loves oldtime jazz and anyone who yearns for an old
fashioned romantic black an white poignant bittersweet melodrama that has a happy ending...That entertains you along the way! The soundtrack is just as dynamic as the film itself!

Beware Discoforme CDs...find another soundtrack.......2006-02-01

What a rip-off! Discoforme, the maker of this soundtrack and others, makes no effort to highlight the music from this film, it just takes the unadorned soundtrack and reproduces it without any refining or editing...spits on the fine music by Max Steiner and gives you ongoing chatter. A very lazy and negligent method and that gives you a total of about 10 minutes of music and 35 minutes of yada type talking ON EVERY TRACK. This spoiled the CD for me. If I wanted all that talking, I would have bought the DVD. Interestingly, the actual CD lists the talking excerpts on every track, but they are not listed on Amazon. This is obviously the Discoforme way/method/shortcut, as another CD, "The Third Man", bought at the same time, and also by Discoforme, does the exact same thing, giving you ongoing CHATTER. Both are marked *50th ANNIVERSARY*. Do not buy either CD, and beware of the DISCOFORME trademark.

Hideaki is an amazing jazz musician, especially for a man of his age! This CD is definitely the beginning of a long music career, as his playing is beautiful, interesting and complex. "Wow" is the first word that comes to mind.

I've known Hideaki since he first came to America and ever since then he's been better at the saxaphone than me. Not that that is much of an accomplishment, but he's still amazing ... DON'T MESS WITH THE BEST! HIDEAKI IS GOD!

Although the young Hideaki shows some promise it remains certain that his musical training is far from over. When [reviewed], it is accepted that you are being rated not only for how you perform in your age bracket but also how you perform against the legendary Jazz giants such as Sonny Rollins, Joshua Redman, John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and many more. At this young point in his musical career this CD may be some solid work for a young man but it is riddled with problems. Hideaki's playing on the album is consistantly flat with some rather unimaginative solo's. It is intresting to see how he has been attempting to mimic the way that Sir Roland Hanna is feeling time. The major reedeming quality of this CD remains the work of Roland and Chris which. Roland imagination roams and provides the complex simplicity which many admire. Chris keeps a very solid an exciting beat throughout. Unforutnatly Hideaki's playing constantly brings down the group. He is a very good high school player, but he's certainly not a professional. Maybe he has a future in playing Jazz, but he has a long, long, long way to go.

Being a close friend of Hideaki Aomori, I have had the wonderful opportunity to get to know and hear this amazing jazz musician. Whenever Hideaki stands up to take a solo anywhere, the audience is silenced in anticipation...and he does not disappoint. Now in his solo album that smooth, satisfying sound covers every note in his breathtaking debut.
