4 out of 5 stars This is a question rather than review.......2005-07-29

This is not really a review but I have a question regarding the second item of the CD: Polonaise.
It has struck me that the composer mentioned is Andrei Osipovich Sychra. This is because all my life I have known that the composer of that piece was a polish composer Michal Kleofas Oginski and the name of that polonaise was "Farewell to homeland" (in polish "Pozegnanie ojczyzny") and originally it was written for a piano.
I would appreciate if some well informed person would enlighten me in that matter.

5 out of 5 stars It's a treat to discover the unusual Russian tradition!.......1999-07-25

I stumbled on a great little nugget of unusual repertoireby attending a concert by the artist (The CD was recently reviewed in Fanfare, if you have access to that pub.)

Timofeyev plays roughly 20 pieces in over 65 minutes of really unusual Russian Romantic music on the native Russian guitar (7 strings, tuned to an open G chord). His tonal palette is very broad -- he reminds me somewhat of Bream in this regard. It's a real treat to hear music that hasn't been recorded by anyone else. (Apparently Timofeyev discovered many of the pieces himself in "lost" manuscripts he studied while completing his doctorate.)

His concert also included some wonderfully shmaltzy Russian songs for coloratura.

Much as I love the Spanish and Latin American masters, it's a real treat to discover a whole, new, decidedly different tradition to enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Ask Any Real Sista...........2000-02-04

In any city of the nation and they can tell ya about Denise Lasalle, which song of hers she loves, and what was going on in her life when she first heard it. Brothers like me kinda can get with her'cause her sassiness is of the humorous kind a la Millie Jackson or Moms Mabley....not of the vindictiveness witnessed in whoever is the flavor of the week looking for a quick hit and fame. Naw, Denise has been around for a bit, and she knows that gambit ain't as glamorous as it seems... to me that means she's one of the real deals, and most of her fans love her for that. I know I do...this CD is another real good one from her Malaco Records years. It has a houserocking "Don't Cry No More" remake on it, a reggae flavored "Bring It On Home" and bluesbar favorites "Write This One Off" and "I Forgot to Remember". Watch out for her, especially as she gets the Jellyroll Award for Best Blues/Soul Artist.

England's Hood have an exquisite sense of restraint. They're sparing with their vocal melodies, but when they do decide to drop one in, it's likely to land on a finely textured bed of sound. The title track compellingly opens with an acoustic guitar pattern played over a skittering electronic rhythm and rock-steady drumming, the perfect backup for the song's staccato vocal line. Unusual layers of percussion energize the emotional indie rock of "Cold Fire Woods of Western Lanes." "The World Touches Too Hard" sets uptempo blips against a slow piano line and lulling drones to create an ambiance that recalls mid-'70s Brian Eno and Robert Wyatt. Dub subtly informs "The Fact That You Failed" and "It's Been a Long Time Since I Was Last Here." On the latter track, electric guitar loops, a touch of vibraphone, and simple, moody trumpet create a mysterious, melancholy driftscape that closes the album on a high note. --Fred Cisterna

5 out of 5 stars Home is no place without Hood.......2001-09-04

Hood is unknown and that's a shame. It's one of the best brittish
band. The music they create is a refreshing mix of mogwai
and tortoise: dub, jazz, lo-fi, pop-influeneces. The atmoshphere is one of rainy days, you stay in and drink another cup of tea. 'Hood is where it hurts'is probably the ideal soundtrack for september. 'The cold western lanes' and
'the fact you've failed' are weltschmerz-pop.
Incredible band! Check also 'the cycle of days and seasons'

5 out of 5 stars "Hurts" is Painfully Good.......2002-04-02

Where it Hurts is the 4th Graveblankets CD, and once again demonstrates songwriter Chris Arduser's grasp of pop stylings, harmonic nuance, craftsmanship, and expression. Arduser guides his band with authority, humor, and zeal. The result is a CD that's painfully good. It's God's own mystery why this guy doesn't have a major record deal yet.
