Everything about Bryn Terfel is over-life-size: his physique, his personality, his breath-control, and of course his extraordinarily beautiful voice. This recording displays his stunning vocalism and versatility to full advantage, but its title belies its content. Alhough it does include some simple pieces, the execution is fussy, overdone, and calculated for maximum external effect. The program ranges from Mozart, Pergolesi and pseudo-Bach to Sondheim in arrangements that are pure Hollywood, complete with throbbing strings and rolling drums, often destroying the spirit as well as the letter of the original compositions. It begins with Mozart's heavenly "Ave verum" arranged for baritone solo and chorus, frustratingly cut off after a few phrases (another setting of the same text by Karl Jenkins, written for Terfel, is more satisfying, being complete and original). The splendid baritone Simon Keenlyside joins him here as well as in the opening number of Pergolesi's "Stabat Mater;" originally for soprano and alto, this must be the baritones' revenge on female singers who usurp songs written for men, like Schubert's and Schumann's cycles. Franck's "Panis angelicus" also inexplicably becomes a duet; unfortunately, Terfel's and tenor Aled Jones' voices do not match. Bach-Gounod's popular "Ave Maria" is all swells and exaggerations. The rest of the program consists of folksongs, hymns, show and film tunes, inflated to operatic proportions and generally ending in a fade-out or a flourish. Even the title song is anything but simple. This record is not for purists who like their music performed the way the composer wrote it, but aficionados of great singing will love it. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:

A Heartfelt Offering Reminiscent of An Earlier Era.......2006-02-15
This recording is wonderful on many levels. The selections are an unusual mixture of classical sacred music, spirituals, hymns, Lieder, Austrian Christmas and Gaelic songs, musical numbers and movie theme songs harmoniously combined to touch the soul of the listener in a gentle ebb and flow of devotion, intensity and tenderness. All of these songs are beautiful in and of themselves and in his hands, we experience them anew.
Bryn Terfel sings with the commitment necessary to make the awesome challenge of simplicity look easy. To my way of thinking, he is the most communicative and articulate singer today, bar none. He is a poet who savors the sound, feeling and meaning of each and every word and marries it uniquely and faithfully to the music. He transports the listener into the life of a song and transfixes us each and every moment. His enormous talent is not overwhelming or distractive and is inextricably and wholly intertwined with the music. This is greatness and it is very, very rare today.
I like the inclusion of the choir in several of the numbers as it reflects on the nature and context of the songs. I am less fond of the selections with the guest soloists as I feel they do not match his ability to "get inside" a song. The orchestra and orchestations are sensitive and enhancing.
This recording is simply wonderful and should have a broad appeal. It will move and inspire the believer, satisfy and fulfill the otherwise spiritual, calm the troubled and renew a flagging soul.

Well met by moonlight, Dame Vera.......2005-01-20
Lynn was a ballad singer with a strikingly pure sound, superb diction and the ability to sell even terrible material. Just listen to her in "When You Wish upon a Star." Almost unbelievably, she makes that hoary old chestnut work. When she actually had something work with, as in "We'll Meet Again" or "White Cliffs of Dover" or "Where in the World?" or even "You'll Never Know," she delivered definitive performances.
This CD offers 24 of Lynn's recordings, the ones that were actually heard in wartime Britain. Even by the standards of her time, the arrangements were hokey. By the standards of the contemporary American big bands, they were downright primitive. Nevertheless, they are exactly right for the period, for the material and for her.
Considering the age of the performances, the state of British recording technology at the time, and the multiple sources, the sound on the disc is quite good. If anything, a slight boxiness adds to the authenticity of the songs.
Vera Lynn was one of the best-loved performers of the 20th Century and is presented here in the form in which she enchanted her generation.
Five stars, with no qualifiers!
World War II favorites from the beloved British singer.......2004-07-30
While I enjoyed practically all of them I would particularly recommend to you "It's A Sin To Tell A Lie", "I Had The Craziest Dream" and her 1940 rendition of "I'll Never Smile Again". These are the original recordings in their original form. They do not appear to have been remastered in any way so the sound quality is not the best. The liner notes are acceptable but I would have appreciated more information on the career of this important British artist. Vera continued to experience modest chart success in Britain until the late 1950's. Strangely she did not appear on the American music charts at all during the war but did finally have some success in the U.S. during the early 50's. If you are a fan of the music of the World War II era this CD would certainly be a fine addition to your collection.
A transporting listen!.......2001-02-16

A lot of fun!.......2007-04-25
First, the cast. An interesting combination. Anna Moffo is a delightful Rosalinda; her lush voice works well here. Jeanette Scovotti as Adele may be less well known, but her work is fine indeed (way back when, I owned the Reader's Digest "Operetta" collection, in which these two reversed roles). Rise Stevens, an estimable mezzo, sings Orlofsky with a nice touch. Sergio Franchi plays Alfredo. Eisenstein is well sung by Richard Lewis. George London, a mainstay at the Met, took on Falke. Finally, John Hauxvell sang Frank. And they all seem to be having a grand old time in the singing. The Vienna State Opera Orchestra and Chorus are well led by Oscar Danon.
Second, the singing. The English translation is hardly great art. But the infectious presentation by the singers renders this close to irrelevant. "Calamity, Catastrophe" has everyone in a dither, with a quick tempo that catches the listener up in the excitement. Rise Stevens does a wonderful turn in "More often than not. . .Chacun a son gout." Well sung indeed. Adele's "Oh for the life of an actress" is an affecting piece, with Jeanette Scovotti doing a nice job singing.
So, if you want an infectious, fun version of "Die Fledermaus" (even with a rather lame English translation), this will work well for you.
Sublime Moffo and cast.......2007-03-04
LOTS OF FUN AND BEAUTIFULLY SUNG.......2006-06-29
Great Moments from Die Fledermaus.......2006-02-10
Sparkling vintage Johann Strauss.......2004-02-20
The English translation is acceptable but nothing dazzling, and some of the words and phrases seem awkward. (Purists will argue FLEDERMAUS is best heard in it's original German. For that, go to Decca's wonderful 1960 set which includes the wonderful gala sequence featuring an all-star cast.)
Anna Moffo is a fine Rosalinda and Jeanette Scovotti is perfect for Adele. (The two ladies switched roles that same year to record highlights for Readers Digest TREASURY OF GREAT OPERETTAS.) Rise Stevens is a bit of a plum as Prince Orlofsky, somehwat past her prime and oversinging "A Most Successful Host." Sergio Franchi does better with Alfred and Richard Lewis does fine as Eisenstein.
The Ball scene is given the larger piece of the recording, probably because this is where the opera's most famous "hit tunes" originate.
FLEDERMAUS is very much a piece of another world...a long forgotten time when Vienna was all glitter and balls and waltzes. They had the right attitude then: In the rest of the world the situation was often serious, but not hopeless. The Vienese viewed the situation as being hopeless - but never serious.
THAT is the spirit of this fun recording.
