ELLEN WOLOSHIN: TRIED AND TRUE
It has been said of singer-songwriter Ellen Woloshin that she is "blessed with the ability to beautifully frame a song with a voice that embodies the essence of warmth and sincerity." And, whether breathing life into her own original songs or creating fresh reinterpretations of cherished pop favorites, it is this magic that epitomizes Ellen's first solo recording, Tried and True.
No stranger to the recording studio, you have no doubt heard Ellen as the voice of everything from McDonald's to Crystal Light to Trump Castle (including making certain that the entire country knows that "Nobody Cares for Eyes More than Pearle"). And while Ellen has sung and written jingles for radio and television since her college years, it is as a singer-songwriter that she has truly distinguished herself.
As lead vocalist in the acoustic duo, "Woloshin & Griffin," Ellen has opened for such artists as Laura Nyro and Bill Stains. Ellen's personal appearances range from playing the college circuit to appearing in her hometown of New York City at the famous Knitting Factory and as part of the "Battery Park City Concert Series" (which also featured Richie Havens) to performances at the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville.
As a songwriter, Ellen's The Promise of Life has been recorded by Dionne Warwick to raise funds for crib death research and has been played by radio stations throughout the country. Ellen has written material for Ben Vereen and LaToya Jackson and her song Warning Label (co-written with "Woloshin & Griffin" partner, Barney Griffin) is included on two country music compilations currently in release throughout Europe and the UK.
And so it seems inevitable that this collective experience as a studio singer, live performer and songwriter would come to fruition in Tried and True. This beautiful CD offers Ellen's songs performed with the insights only the songwriter herself can provide including an original duet, I Fall Hard with actor Mike McGlone of the films "The Brothers McMullen," "She's the One," and "The Bone Collector."
In addition, the CD offers a sprinkling of songs by other writers that struck a particular chord with Ellen. Included are George Harrison's While My Guitar Gently Weeps (Ellen says she was "touched by its moving message of leading with love rather than fear"); Bill Withers' Whatever Happens (which Ellen discovered in a "happy accident" as she was looking for a different Withers song); and When We Dance (a lesser-known Sting song which Ellen says "perfectly matched my voice").
Ellen has said she wanted Tried and True to be her personal collection of songs she truly loves to sing. And, in return, the world now has a classic, new voice that it can love to listen to. Join us in the celebration of Ellen Woloshin's Tried and True.

Not What it Claims to be.......2004-12-10
The identity of the recording can be determined in the first minute from Flanders' introduction of Swann as "noted composer, pianist, linguist, also contains lanolin" - in the Fortune Theatre recording he is introduced as "noted composer, pianist, linguist, and all round egghead". There are substantial differences in the two performances, not least of which the pace which is a lot quicker in this recording, lacking the elegant timing which characterised the UK performance and which is comparable to the available CD of "At the Drop of Another Hat" (which WAS recorded in the UK).
Many of the jokes and asides are different - for instance in "Have Some Madeira", the Fortune Theatre recording includes an aside "He slyly inveigled her up to his flat, to view his collection of stamps [aside] All unperforated! ha ha ha ..." clearly this was regarded as too risqué for the US performance.
The songs are the same vintage and hilarious Flanders and Swann but the presentation, to me, is nowhere close to the quality of the earlier performance - it sounds to me like they were by this stage tired of the material and "going through the motions" for an audience that they did not relate to in the same way as an English audience.
Incidentally - Too Many Cookers, Vanessa, Tried by the Centre Court and The Youth of the Heart were not on the original LP recording and judging from the acoustics these were recorded elsewhere. The sleeve notes identify these as being recorded in 1957, 2 years prior to the Fortune Theatre performance.

After being told to take up singing as a means of strengthening his polio-weakened lungs, the wheelchair-bound Flanders teamed up with pianist Swann and proceeded to write such classic songs as "The Hippo Song (Mud Mud Glorious Mud)", "The Gasman Cometh", "The Gnu Song", "A Transport of Delight" and many others. As well as a gently satirical spirit, all these songs feature the sublime wordplay and interplay of both men.
The first two discs of this box set are actual concerts - "At The Drop Of A Hat" and its successor "At The Drop Of Another Hat". Recorded at the height of the duo's popularity and form, the sound quality is surprisingly good for recordings this old.
"At The Drop Of A Hat" opens with three of the Flanders and Swann classics. "Transport Of Delight", a song in praise of the "97 horsepower omnibus" features the wonderful harmonies of the duo on lines like "any more fares" and Flanders' dead-on impression of a London busdriver "Geddardait, we're full right up inside". "Song of Reproduction" deals with the new, as it was then, stereo technology and features Flanders delivering an incredible monologue using every conceivable piece of audiophile jargon. "The Gnu Song" (in which "gnu" is pronounced phonetically) is a real treat. The audience's reaction to the reappearance of the gnu is superb.
As well as this opening trio, the disc features Flanders' snippets of "Songs For Our Time" (in which he experiments with conventions of hit songs), "Song of the Weather" (a rundown of English weather throughout the year), "The Reluctant Cannibal" (featuring Swann in the tititular role and the chorus "I can't eat people/I won't eat people/eatin' people is wrong"), Swann's foray into Greek folksong "Kokraki" and the justifiably famous "Madeira M'Dear". The performance ends with a rousing version of "The Hippo Song".
Flanders is in fine voice throughout and his comments introducing each song are delivered with deadpan accuracy. The story behind "The Gnu Song" is an absolute masterpiece. Flanders' monologue about the creation of "Greensleeves" is also superb - "'Greenfleeves'. That's an interesting name for a fong" (referencing old English script) being just a taste.
"Another Hat" begins in equally fine form with "Gasman Cometh" and "Ill Wind". "Gasman", presaged as "a tale of unending domestic upheaval", is sure to have most people who've ever dealt with unreliable tradesmen nodding in agreement, while "Ill Wind" is Flanders' attempt at setting words to a French horn concerto featuring the immortal lines "I lost that horn/lost that horn/lost that horn/found that horn/gorn". The performance continues with Swann's Russian/English song "In The Desert", the ending of which is truly side-splitting. "All Gall" (a reinterpretation of "This Old Man" to fit then-French President Charles de Gaulle) is a little dated but very cleverly done. "Song of Patriotic Prejudice", with its introduction and opening lines grabbing the audience's attention is another triumph, while the "Hippo Encore" is a great end to the performance.
Again Flanders is at his peak. His loving description of the Spanish olive-stuffers ("Olividados") and his superb story about flying ("By Air") are both brilliant examples of the shaggy dog story.
My favourite from both of these discs would have to be "First and Second Law". Flanders decides to educate Swann in elementary science and picks on the first and second laws of thermodynamics ("heat is work and work is heat" and "heat cannot of itself pass from one body to a hotter body") and the repetition of these phrases in time to Swann's barely-there piano accompaniment is one of the finest moments in British comedy.
The third disc is largely forgettable. It begins with a series of animal-related songs performed in a studio and without much of Flanders' rambling introductions. "Warthog" has its moments, while the others were clearly not performed in front of an audience for a reason. "Wompom" is also mildly diverting, presenting a story about a made-up substance which is the answer to everything.
The rest of the disc is then filled out with much earlier material in a rather poorly-recorded concert. "20 Tons of TNT" (related to the calculation the pair had done which gave that as the amount of TNT per person on the planet at the time) provides food for thought, but little more.
Is this box set for everyone? No. Much of the humour both within and without the songs does require a bit of background knowledge to what was going on in Britain and Europe at the time (1960s), John Profumo is referenced a few times as well as Charles de Gaulle and the Common Market, while a smattering of classical music knowledge can help out a bit with Swann's work and "Ill Wind". The fact that my grandfather (who's in his late 70s) recalls hearing these songs and laughing may give an indication as to the age of some of the subject matter. Equally the fact that "First and Second Law" references an awful lot of physics might do the same.
Nevertheless, for anyone who loves British humour done in a gentle manner or who is interested in the source of "mud mud glorious mud/nothing quite like it for cooling the blood", give these CDs some serious consideration.
Gentle Satire.......2002-04-03
Here are some samples of Michael's verbal wit.
Wordplay:
- "A Transport of Delight," their song of the pleasures of the double-decker bus "has recently been adopted as the theme song of the Underground resistance movement."
- Speculating that Henry VIII wrote Greensleeves: "and the royalties go to royalty."
- About a tennis referee late in the day: "the umpire upon whom the sun never sets."
- Explaining how he was hoisted in his wheelchair onto airliners by a fork lift: "Why they need a great machine like that to lift forks I do not know. Well, they're only plastic, now, aren't they?"
- On status symbols: "The object is to Gunga Din your neighbor: 'I'm a better man than you' is the acid test," and, "let's bang our status cymbals with the best."
- To a disenchanted cannibal: "You used to be a regular anthropophagi."
- Of a lecher: "And he said as he hastened to put out the cat, the wine, his cigar, and the lamps," while the girl "lowered her standards by raising her glass, her courage, her eyes, and his hopes."
- At the corrida d'olivas (the Andorran festival of olive stuffing, not to be confused with the Spanish corrida de toros, or bullfight): "And a great cry goes up of Ole! He has made an 'ol."
- "It's no good going up to a scientist and saying to him like you would to anybody else, 'Good morning, how are you, lend me a quid, and so on.' He'll just glare at you, or make a rude retort."
Throw-aways
- During the height of the cold war the Soviet Union sent the Moscow Ballet on a world tour. Donald sang one chorus of the Hippopotamus Song "mud, mud, glorious mud - nothing quite like it for cooling the blood" in Russian. Michael: "That should improve our cultural relations."
- During the 1963 Mandy Rice-Davies and Christine Keeler scandal: "None of that going around saying no smoke without fire. Nil cumbustibus, Profumo." Also, from "Friendly Duet," "such models of friendship are precious and rare, while the friendship of models is not."
- "Now if you're writing a musical, as I'm sure practically all of you are, . . ."
- Of Donald: "You know that no one has a higher regard for your music . . . than you do yourself. I merely meant that you are not great because you are not dead. If you wish to be great you must stop composing and start decomposing."
- "We never found a rhyme for (Soviet Premier Nikita) "Kruschev" until he was dead: Did he die or was he "pushed off"?"
- "We spent two dreadful, uh, delightful years, entertaining the Americans whose need, let's face it, is greater even than yours. Of course, when we're over there we say that the other way 'round."
- "No matter what you may say about the Germans, and who doesn't . . ."
- "Some of the songs that have made our names a household word, like slop-bucket . . ."
- "They've started testing cars now. They started at 10 years, then 5, now three. There's even some talk of having them tested before they leave the factory."
Absurdities
- "I'm delirious about our new oven fitted with the eye-level grill. This means that without my having to bend down the hot fat can squirt straight into my eye."
- A spectator during the construction of Stonehenge: "So, it's not going to be lived in. Well, that's something anyway. So what is it, then? It's a what?! A calendar?! A bit big for a calendar isn't it? You'd look pretty foolish with that on your desk."
- "Donald knocked himself out this morning. Got one of those new pop-up toasters. Nasty things."
Incredible multiple rhymes:
- "The fair hippoptama he aimed to entice from her seat on her hilltop above, as she hadn't got a ma to give her advice, went tip-toeing down to her love."
- Of Josephine: "Nonsense, said Bonaparte. She lives on her own, apart, in her own apartment."
- "Oh let us be married if our parents don't mind. We'd be happy and inseparable. Inextricably entwined. We'd live happily every after, said the Honeysuckle to the Bindweed."
- "And you'll always see a single lace-less left-hand leather boot. A bootless British river bank's a shock. We leave them there at midnight, you can track a member's route by the alternating print of boot and sock."

High Quality compilation.......2006-12-04
Mama Tried starts off with the classic title track--Merle always does well with semi-autobiographical material about prison life and disappointment, and the lively background singing is one of those golden elements to Merle's sound. "Green Green Grass of Home" is another well-interpreted cover from Merle which far outshines Tom Jones' version for its authenticity and emotion. The joyride feel of "Little Ol' Wine Drinker Me" is another great cover, as is Johnny Cash's "Folsom Prison Blues." "I'll Always Know" is interesting--sounds somewhat like a 50's pop rock and roll song more than characteristic Haggard. "Sunny Side of My Life" and "Too Many Bridges" are great up-tempo tunes, and the back-porch sound of "Run 'em Off" is another classic. Basically, on Mama Tried, Merle takes his classic formula of pedal steel, high-energy vocal arrangements, and excellent material to turn in one of the best albums of his early career, chock full of classics.
Pride In What I Am is solid, to be sure, but doesn't shine quite as brightly as the often up-tempo Mama Tried. The title track is certainly a classic, and it sounds less characteristically Bakersfield. This album has more ballads, like "It Meant Goodbye to Me ... " and "Keep Me From Crying Today," and some Spanish-influence like on "I Just Want to Look at You One More Time." The slower tracks are good, but aren't as heartwrenching as some of Merle's finest ballads (although "Skid Row" is pretty classic), so the album feels a little slower than some others. However, there are a couple of great romps like "I'm Bringing Home Good News" and "I Think We're Living in the Good Old Days" that prove that even if a Merle Haggard album wasn't one of his very best, it's still pretty damn good. The driving tune "White Line Fever" is another great addition as a bonus track to this reissue.
Overall, this 2fer is carried by Mama Tried, the stronger of the two for its covers and originals and a truly classic Merle album. Pride in What I Am is a great solid effort and sounds really good in addition to the essential listening of Mama Tried, so this is well worth the buy. If you're new to Merle, this one would be a good choice to start with because of Mama Tried, but don't stop here--the other reissues are spectacular as well!
Truely fine work from good Ole' Merley Haggard!.......2006-04-05
There are also covers of other people songs on here such as Porter's "Green Green Grass Of Home" and Johnny's "Folsom Prison Blues" which are sung with deep passion. If you don't like covers don't let that hinder you from getting this because if you like the Hag like I do you'll understand the feeling he puts into any and all of songs, especially being in prison when Johnny Cash played "Folsom Prison Blues". This is a real good buy for 29 songs that define a genre of music.

Excellent new (1999) recordings of career favorites.......2002-04-22
Of particular appeal is what, to me, is the definitive version of Mr. Bojangles -- done in a bouncy, jazzy, scatty arrangement that is perfect for the story told in the song, that of a tap dancing cell mate encountered in a New Orleans drunk tank.
Top-notch versions of other career highlights, mostly from the more acoustic side of Jerry Jeff, include: Morning Song To Sally; Woman In Texas; She Knows Her Daddy Sings; and Little Man. This is a 60 year old man who has lived a fast and hard life (and survived it!) who is now clean, sober, and seemingly happy. Contrary to the accusation of the other reviewer that he's ripping off his fans by cramming the same songs down their throats again, what he's really doing is celebrating -- in and with song -- that survival, and recalling and paying tribute to the people and places his life has brought to him.
Songwise, it ranges from very good to excellent; performance-wise, it's terrific -- very down-home and comfortable; recording quality-wise, it's as good a sounding album as you could ask for -- clean and crisp (especially appealing due to the fact that it is dominanted by acoustic guitars).

Tried and True Music.......1999-12-30
A few minutes later, Jerry Jeff stepped up on the stage, sat on the stool, hooked his right heel on a rung of the stool, and asked "how y'all doin'?" I was mad because he didn't even have a band! Then he started playing and singing. It took two songs to come down and start listening. Then I just sat there mesmerized, still except for my breathing, for over three hours as I learned what music was really about. I learned that music was about communicating, educating, and sharing life's experiences.
This CD took me right back to that night. With so many "polished acts" out there today, Jerry Jeff uses this CD to remind each of us what life is about... living, learning, and sharing what we know with others.
If you want a "catchy chorus" with no meaning that sticks in your head and nothing else, move on. If you want music that is real, honest, and sincere enough to stir your appetite for life... this one is a "MUST HAVE"!

Highly Recommendable!.......2004-06-09
It`s always a matter of taste which songs are actually the best; in my opinion this album does the job pretty well.
From her debut album "Marlene on the Wall", "A Small Blue Thing" and "The Queen and the Soldier" (her great song about power, loyalty and honesty) are obvious choices. I would not have minded "Cracking" being there too, but these 3 songs represent that album perfectly.
From "Solitude Standing" it`s the same; the best songs are there, but a few more would not have harmed the collection.
I have always considered her third album "Days of Open Hand" her weakest; it seems the compiler of this album feels the same since he`s only selected "Book of Dreams" from the album. "Tired of Sleeping" would also have been a good choice.
On "99,9 F" Vega experiments with new sounds and rhythms. When the album was originally released, I was not so sure if I liked her direction; now it`s my favourite and the title track, "Blood Makes Noise", "In Liverpool" and "When Heroes Go Down" are all great tracks.
The slightly "jazzy" "Nine Objects of Desire" is represented by "World Before Columbus", "Caramel" and "No Cheap Thrill". It`s a good album, where most song could have deserved selection. My favourite "Headshot" is not here, but then I have the original album already.
Both new songs "Book and a Cover" and "Rosemary" are good which was fine for me, since I had already bought her original albums.
This CD is highly recommendable, and if you want more of the same, you can seek out the 2 CD "Retrospective" or simply buy her original albums - they are all worth it.
Excellent ... though I do have some complaints........2003-08-16
My complaints are as always the song selection. Yes, I know Tom's Dinner was a hit in that crappy remix version, but the original A Capella version is just much better. And include the groovy instrumental version ... love that one. Also, I sorely miss the song 'Solitude Standing' - this was actually released as a single, and was always one of my favorites from that album, and I can't for the life of me see why it wasn't included.
Other songs could have been left out. Caramel is ok, though I don't like it that much. Worse however is the utterly boring Book Of Dreams, that I think is only anoying. The new song Book & A Cover is also pretty uninspiring.
Finally I'm not content with the song arrangement. The stunning The Queen And The Soldier deserved to have closed the album - I love Rosemary, but it's not really an album closer. The Queen And The Soldier is about the ultimate album closer, so that's a bit frustrating.
All that being said, this reopened my eyes to the fantastic Solitude Standing album (which I grew up with, since my parents loved it) and offered me a bunch of for me hither to unknown gems like '99.9 F', 'Blood Makes Noise', 'Left Of Center', 'In Liverpool', 'World Before Columbus' and not least 'The Queen And The Soldier' - so I can only recommend it.
Nice Collection Of Songs.......2003-08-01
No cheap thrill!.......2002-06-12
Fine Music, Yet Not The Best Of............2002-01-06
My advice, especially to U.S. residents who only have access to this disc as an import (aka overpriced), I'd recommend purchasing at least three of her albums (they're about ten dollars a piece; I especially recommend "Nine Objects Of Desire") and end up spending a similar amount rather than this selective album, that nevertheless contains quality music from the classiest, most tender and consistent voice of adult pop for almost two decades now.
Since this review was written, a new Suzanne Vega recompilation has been made available in the U.S.

Great music to play beside the pool or while relaxing with a cold beverage on a nice tropical day, or a day you wish was tropical.
If you are a JJW fan you have to get this. If you like the tropics and the JJW country/folk/balad style this will likely make you very happy.

A Sheryl Crow with drum programmers as the motor of her dreams, singer-songwriter Leona Naess delivers an affecting second album. I Tried to Rock You could be an answer to the many listless Sensitive Guys clogging 2001 airwaves; Naess's vulnerability sounds not like a ploy to land her on teen-flick soundtrack albums, but like an honest reaction to the love troubles she's encountered since her debut. Open-hearted but never at a loss when it comes to tapping her own strength, Naess is arched-eyebrow funny when dissing and dismissing a lover in the title track, happily puzzled when admitting in "Sunny Sunday" that "I didn't mean to like u so much." Now that the press has lost interest in focusing on her beauty and privileged background (she is the daughter of Diana Ross's ex-husband Arne Naess), the field is clear for Naess's sensible love songs to resound--as it does perhaps most clearly when she reconfigures a pop-culture watchword to read "boys like you never cry." --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:

Excellent second album.......2004-03-13
Perhaps most important is the fact that there isn't one duff track on here. Each one is good in its own right, although Boys Like You (a clever hark back to The Cure's classic), the title track, All The Stars and Hurricane stand out. Of course, the question becomes why isn't Leona Naess more popular than she already is? An artist of this quality usually receives their fair share of hype, but Leona has received comparitively little. Whilst it's easy to compare her to other female chanteuses out there she's more upbeat and less poetic than Sarah McLachlan. And she's certainly a lot better than a great deal of the Lilith group following in Sarah's wake. For one, she's cleverer. She knows her relationships inside out and she isn't afraid to wear her heart on her sleeve but, unlike Alanis Morissette per say, she doesn't seem so jaded about love that she can't sing soft tracks that carry you along with her, such as Mexico or Serenade. If comparing Leona to anyone it would probably be as a cross between Amanda Ghost (who also employs dance beats) and Nerina Pallot (vocally they're very similar), which is a high compliment indeed.
In short, this is a brilliant album, and well worth buying even if you were disappointed by Comatised. From reviews of her third album though, Leona shouldn't need much help getting the hype she deserves sometime soon.
Bravo for Leona.......2003-09-12
The first four songs are definitely the strongest, with the upbeat "Mexico" kicking off the set. The drawling "Mayor of Your Town" and "All the Stars" follow it up beautifully, and the quartet is capped by the wistful title track. The best of the rest include the slower "Baby Eyed Blue" and "Hurricane". One of the real strengths of this album are the sensible and impassioned lyrics, and when put to Leona's voice they're truly a pleasure to listen to.
Given the development from her debut to "I Tried to Rock You", it's evident that Leona is a singer/songwriter very much on the rise. She is a promising young artist, and I hope that her popularity someday catches up with her talent. Three cheers, and I'm very much looking forward to her new album. (due out soon!)
