Released in 1969, just eight months after In Search of the Lost Chord, Threshold continues the Moody Blues's journey as cosmic seekers but in a less exotic manner. Here, Justin Hayward packs away the sitar and the band has swept most of the mystical and Eastern influences under the Kilim rug, replacing them with a science-fictional search for meaning and futuristic production methods. As on two earlier albums, Graeme Edge regales listeners with esoteric poetry, this time adding a whimsical, ironic edge to his ponderous verse. The songs have also undergone a similar overhaul, allowing the band's talent for melody to overcome the psychedelic whirls that embellished the earlier albums. John Lodge's assertive bass takes control of the bucolic "Lovely to See You," Roy Thomas's deceptively cheerful "Dear Diary," and the upbeat "Lazy Days," which also contains an unexpected lyrical sting. Indeed, the entire album is underpinned with a wistful melancholy as the grandiose rockers capture the bittersweet fleeting moments of the '60s. --Jaan Uhelszki

5 out of 5 stars Tour de force.......2007-06-06

This album truly is an absolute work of art. Others here have offered up fantastic reviews of this album, so I am only going to briefly comment on the songs that struck a particularly strong chord with me, whether good or bad.

I can honestly say that out of the thirteen tracks, there is only one that I really don't care for: 'Dear Diary'. Who knows, maybe I might learn to love this song someday, and if I do change my mind, then I will most definitely alter my negative review. But right at this moment, it's the one and only song that keeps this album from being a perfect 10 in my book. Usually- and with good reason- I am such a fan of Ray Thomas' work, but this song does absolutely nothing to present this man's awesome vocal abilities in a favorable light. Perhaps if he had sang it differently, ie in his normal vocal tone, it would most assuredly have been a great song. The tune, melody, and lyrics are quite good actually. It's the "way" that Ray sings it that turns me off- sorry Ray. (I still love and miss you, dear sir). Ray does redeem himself very well on 'Lazy Day', a sweet little ode to the peaceful times to be had on an English Sunday afternoon. It's not an intricate or deep song by any means but it has its merits.

Now on to the awesome Mr. Hayward's ballads: Justin's 'Lovely to See You' is a concert staple/favorite for a very good reason: it's a truly lovely, understated song that just makes you plain feel good! 'Never Comes the Day' is one of my favorite Justin penned/lead vocal songs. I had heard it often described as being slightly weird, the lyrics "but you WILL love me tonight" in particular. Perhaps I'm a little slow but I just don't get that feeling from this song. To me, this song is about a man in love who is honest enough to admit that there's "stuff" hidden inside of him that isn't pretty, may be hard to love, and perhaps should be kept hidden. This could be speaking of any of us, myself included. Another reason for me to admire this song: John's background vocals. Any time (on the same song) that he can sing that fab falsetto AND he and Justin can sing harmony is an oh-so-good time to be had by my eager ears. In rounding out Hayward's songs, I have only one word to adequately describe "Are You Sitting" (co-written by Ray) MAGICAL!!

What to say about my dear John's two songs: 'Send Me No Wine' is a great, catchy tune, albeit a MUCH too short one(why oh why John?) This one has a decidely country feel, flavor, and sound to it. This little gem could have come straight out of Nashville in the late 1960's and been right at home here in the Southern United States. This is truly something so very different from anything I've ever heard from him, though he still rocks it out as well. I believe John's songwriting muse short-changed him on this album, as his next great offering 'To Share My Love' is a much too brief song as well. "Makes me feel good" is how Lodge starts this ditty and it does make me feel quite good indeed to hear it, even though Pinder leads most of the vocals on this one. It;s still a good little song but I wanted to hear more. John's rocking bassline is excellent as is Graeme's accompanying drum beat. Love ya Lodgie!

Rounding out my favorites on OTTOAD: Mike Pinder's 'Have You Heard/ The Voyage'(I consider the two to be one song). I will freely admit that I am not a huge Pinder fan, but I HAVE to give the man his much-deserved props. This is, bar none, his best song EVER and it is an absolute pleasure for me to listen to it. The man has a way with words, not to mention his unsurpassed skills on every keyboard instrument known to mankind. He will forever be the Mellotron king. His voice ain't altogether half bad either. What I appreciate the most about this song is that fact that ALL of the Moodies awesome skills and talents as musicians are on pristine display here. I have only seen one "live" (it was a video, sadly) performance of HYH/TV and it quite frankly blew me away, just in seeing how passionately and ferevently the guys played their respective instruments. Oh man, what I wouldn't give to have seen this live "back in the day". If God would grant me the opportunity to go back in time to see only ONE vintage Moodies performance, it would be this song! Graeme Edge's often overlooked drum work is an absolute marvel to see and hear. Ray's flute solos have never been played with such understated zeal. Pinder is so very passionate on the piano and organ, or is it just the Mellotron? Regardless, the man has never sounded better. John's very dirty, low-down, funky, hard-driving (did I use enough adjectives?) bass work is just stellar, especially when played in unison with Edge's drum- truly a treat for the senses! The guys make me tired just watching them play, at what is at times, a frenetic pace. Can you tell that I dearly love this song?!

In closing I'd like to say that this is an album that the Moody Blues can and should be VERY proud of. It is truly a masterpiece created by the minds, hands and voices of five incredible men who are all living legends and supremely talented at their craft. If you don't already have it, get it- TODAY!

5 out of 5 stars Another Stellar Performance.......2007-04-15

I rate this as my third favorite Moody Blues album behind In Search Of The Lost Chord and Seventh Sojourn . Are You Sitting Comfortably ? is my second favorite Moody Blues song . The first half of the album has some of the most pop oriented songs that the band ever did in it's second incarnation . The last 4 cuts must be listened to as a single piece . This is the first of the "art rock" bands and they were paving the way for the rest of them . It's amazing to think that they were able to get noticed at all by the general public in an era when radio stations refused to play ANY songs that ran over 3 minutes in length . This album is a facinating part of history and should be in every Moody Blues fan's collection.

5 out of 5 stars The Title Says it All!.......2007-04-15

This is another Moody Blues masterpiece. it ranks in my eyes right by their ultimate achievement: "To our Children's Children's Children."

Few in my generation have not experienced the magic of this album. Every song on it is gold, and the continuity between the songs is perfect. The blending of classic orchestral instruments and rock and roll instruments is perfection. Every ballad is a work of beauty.

To feel good being seranaded by harmonizing voices blended with rich sonic tapestries is the delight of the Moody Blues that will never become outdated.

5 out of 5 stars Stunningly good remaster.......2007-02-16

I used to listen to this and other Moody Blues albums on both vinyl and 8-track endlessly in. I *finally* got around to getting the CDs recently and the remaster of this album is STUNNING. I'm always a bit afraid of remastering because often the mix changes to suit the engineers or the artists as they think "it should have been". My opinion of this remaster is that it's a beautiful technology update that doesn't disturb the original music from the 1960's. The master tapes must have been in great shape, this is nearly flawless.

If you liked the Moody Blues back then, the remasters will blow you away.

5 out of 5 stars On the Threshold of a Masterpiece.......2007-01-30

The Moodies put together a melotron thick album. Have You Heard parts 1 & 2 are worth the price of admission. A preview for the next album which is......

Album Description

The Moody Blues abandoned the Oriental and Indian influences from their prior album in favor of more traditional Western melody, as well as science fiction and religious imagery. Similarly, the sitars and tables disappear, replaced by much heavier use of the Mellotron and the grand piano, among other Western instruments. Both keyboards come to the fore in the album's centerpiece, 'Have You Heard/The Voyage', a Mike Pinder tour de force and a wonderful piece of progressive psychedelia. Polydor. 2006.

5 out of 5 stars instant memories.......2007-07-07

I had all seven albums (on vinyl)and played them to death... at last I have them back again, in their original form! 30 years just fell away!

5 out of 5 stars Quite Pleased With the New SACD Mix.......2007-03-19

I have listened to this album in every format (vinyl, cassette, 8-track, 80's CD/1997 Remaster/SACD) and I have to say that I am impressed with this latest mix. It sounds beefier, crisper and some songs seem just a hair longer in the refrains & sequed sections. The vocals really sound smooth, especially on "Dear Diary" where you can practically hear the air from the leslie cabinets. The extra tracks are nice and I always wanted to hear "The Voyage" all by itself & after 30 years of playing this album, I finally can. I thank the boys at Threshold for this special gift (how did they know what I was thinking?).

The cover art is a little softer & faded, but who cares?! I still have the LP, cassette, previously released CD versions and a bloody concert t-shirt of this album cover from a 1993 concert in Buffalo (Melody Fair). I've more than studied the friggin' artwork of this album. Anyhoo, I think this latest release was a grand success and highly recommend it. I can't speak for SACD release of "Question Of Balance", but judging from the reviews, I'll probably just stick with the 1997 remaster.

5 out of 5 stars The Dream.......2007-03-04

This is a fantastic album from the Moodies and the sound is excellent. This is one of the band's most dreamlike albums and can give you a contact buzz just listening to it. I love the fact that they've restored the album's original booklet and pictures as well as adding some cool bonus songs. This really is an album meant for surround sound. From the trippy In The Beginning, this album REALLY DOES take you on a voyage and every song is a must have. Everyone in the band contributes to this release and it's wonderful to hear the group mind at one of it's peaks. Truely one of the Moodies best.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than expected.......2007-02-13

Despite being previously disappointed with the Question of Balance SACD I plunged forward with this one. I must say I like this one much better. I haven't really experienced the ear fatigue other reviewers have noted though there is no doubt that the reproduction here does have a more compressed sound and differs significantly from other versions such as the MFSL CD which I also have.

In this case I think different is actually better. I really enjoy the surround sound seperation on this one much more than The Question of Balance. Clarity is the key word here. I've never heard this CD sound so pristine. Having enjoyed this CD in other releases (and previously LP) for many years I appreciate the opportunity to hear it in a vastly different light.

The Intro to Lovely To See You just jumps out the speakers. Much more in your face than I've ever heard before. Other rocking tunes really benefit from the SACD sound as well. I noticed some of the songs are longer than the originals with introductions and endings expanded to what I presume was their full size. This alters the listening experience if you're comparing to the original, but I don't mind this as anyone buying and listening to this SACD should be someone interested in exploring this CD at a different level.

As for the weaknesses? Lack of bass response is once again the most significant limitation. There is no subwoofer channel as there wasn't on the Question of Balance either. I believe this comes from the fact these SACD mixes were created from the quadrophonic 4 channel mixes. Overall, for Moody Blues fanatics wishing to dig deeper into this brilliant record I do recommend it. The bonus tracks are interesting though not essential. Once again my Sony SACD player cannot play these bonus tracks which are not mixed in SACD. The player (as others have noted) considers the end of the SACD formatted songs as the end of the CD!

For more casual fans the remastered version from the late 90's should suffice. Because of the limitations discussed above I can't give it a 5 star though on content alone I think it would be. Is it the definitive, perfect reproduction of this Moody Blues masterpiece? I believe the answer is no. That said, its still an enjoyable variation on a great record.

4 out of 5 stars To Dream.......2007-02-06

This is a good cd to listen too by sitting back, closing your eyes and perhaps day-dream as suggested in the cd title.
Even though I am not familiar with any of the cd's tracks I was impressed with the music. The surround sound was excellent, with clear and crisp instruments and voices well distributed in varying quantities at different times between the front, back and side speakers. (I have setup my audio system as a 9.1).

The only negative is that the audio is only 5.0, not 5.1. Also, only the first 13 out of 22 tracks use the 5.0 surround sound.

I would recommend this SACD to non-Moody Blues fanatics.

5 out of 5 stars Liquid voice with true talent........2007-05-18

Josh Kelly is one of those singers that makes you sit back and smile. I'm sure he sings in the shower, while stuck in traffic, and while making a PBJ. It just seems to pour out of him. His music is lovely to listen to and each song offers a different kind of melody and flavor, allowing the listener to enjoy the entire album, rather than just a few tracks. "Just Say the Word" and "Almost Honest" are my two favorite JK albums. If you love a good melody and a great voice, you are sure to love Josh Kelley.

All of Joshes cds are a must have. JUST SAY THE WORD is a little more mature cd then his others (FOR THE RIDE HOME & ALMOST HONEST). It is amazing to see how much his talent has grown since his first cd. JUST SAY THE WORD is a great cd for kids and adults & of course a good cd for the car ride!!

5 out of 5 stars just say the word: amazing.......2006-11-12

The new album from Josh Kelley is an adventure of music. It feels like colour in your life and has the power to create a fantastic temper. The lyrics are great and it really makes fun to listen to it. However if you liked his last album "Almost Honest" you will love his new one as well because the mood it tells is even happier. It's a great new album and I just have to say the word: amazing!

5 out of 5 stars Even better than Amazing.......2006-11-10

I thought Josh Kelley's first album was fantastic, but Just Say the Word is even better. I have loved listening to it in my car and I can even run to it. Definitely, 5 stars. You have to go see him live when you have the chance. A great performer/entertainer as well.

2 out of 5 stars are you kidding me?.......2007-07-15

Dream Theatre they are not... not even close. The only great song is 7 tracks in and the rest is very mediocre. The writing is ammaturish, the vocals are laid down with a beat syncronous to the rythm of the melody pathetic. It goes on and on with the lilt of kids nursery rhyme... da na, da na, da na, da nananana da na. And what's up with the gutteral groans scattered carelessy through out. I like in your face metal as much as melodic rock, but throwing down growls in an AOR tune is too weird.

Save your money

4 out of 5 stars Another solid Threshold album.......2007-06-28

Threshold seems to be one of those bands (Vanden Plas is another) that are perpetually on the well, threshold (sorry) of reaching a wider audience. You know that if just half, or even a quarter of those who bought Dream Theater's latest album checked out Threshold, they would have the fanbase their music deserves. I didn't discover them until I saw them perform at ProgPower USA III in 2002 (which is captured on the Threshold - Critical Energy DVD), but once I did I was hooked.

With 2007's Dead Reckoning, Threshold continues their run of high quality melodic progressive metal albums. Threshold is probably the best band in the genre when it comes to balancing great melodies with technical proficiency. As proggy as the music may get, there are still plenty of great guitar hooks and songs that stick in your head and make you sing along. They also manage to keep your attention throughout the entire album, whether it's through aggressive pacing or avoiding the kind of self-indulgent instrumental passages that are all too common in the genre. These guys are all obviously very talented musicians, but they have the good sense to realize that the song is more important than the solo. I think having such a unique and competent vocalist in Mac helps in that respect.

My only real complaint about this album (and pretty much all of their albums since Hypothetical) is that the band hasn't really done much to progress their style. To be sure, they've improved their skills with each release, but the basic formula is largely unchanged. It's a minor complaint when you consider just how good each album is, but still, you expect some evolution from a progressive metal band. The brief inclusion of death metal-style vocals on Elusive (courtesy of Nightingale mainman Dan Swano) was a nice touch, and showed that the band is willing to experiment a bit.

If you're a Threshold fan, I doubt you'll be disappointed in Dead Reckoning. If you're a progressive rock/metal fan just now discovering the band, then kudos to you! You're now in on a (too) well-kept secret.

NOTE: The limited edition version of Dead Reckoning comes in a nifty digipack with a foil cover and includes one bonus track - a very unexpected cover of the Muse single Supermassive Black Hole. It's about the same price as the regular version, so it's well worth searching for.

3 out of 5 stars A funny thing happened on the way to the studio..........2007-05-28

First let me say that previous to "Dead Reckoning" I considered Threshold to be my favorite group/music, but something is missing with this CD. Maybe it's the absence of Jon Jeary and Nick Midson combined, that finally account for the lack of grandeur and epic qualities in the songwriting that defined Threshold's music over their past four CD's. This isn't a bad effort, but it doesn't have anything that reaches out and grabs you like their previous releases did. I really looked forward to hearing this CD and now that I have, I'm left bored and disappointed.

3 out of 5 stars Decent But Not Spectacular Metal.......2007-05-15

This review is a tough one for me to write...I first heard Threshold years ago during the release of their amazing album "Critical Mass", a heavy, intelligent, and original progressive metal tour-de-force that left me wanting more. After picking up some of their older material ("Hypothetical" is also very good) as well as their next release, "Subsurface", I was very excited when I first heard about their latest.

The problem I am having is not one of style or musicianship; I would not change a thing. All band members are very good at what they do. Threshold is not as complex (or convoluted, as the case may be) as other metal bands usually lumped under the "progressive" moniker, but they play very heavy, well-written riffs, great melodic solos, and memorable melodies. Their style is quite singular, most of that having to do with their excellent singer, Mac; he has a very powerful and unique sound that I love. The problem is the degeneration of the lyrics. "Critical Mass" and many of their other releases were full of interesting philosophical musings- reincarnation, subatomic universes, the relationship of those who serve the powerful to their own apathy....very heady stuff. Not for everyone, but I find philosophy and metaphysics fascinating. More and more, however, I find myself wincing painfully or skipping ahead to avoid painfully contived, cliche'd lyrics. "Pilot In The Sky Of Dreams"? Not that I'm some tough-guy that doesn't like sensitive lyrics or emotions, but my god....there is a point at which it's just cheesy. I feel like I'm listening to Journey. So, to summarize, I love Threshold, and wanted to give it five stars, but couldn't. Other than that, it's cool stuff.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing find!.......2007-05-11

If you liked the early more commercial sounding Dream Theater, you'll really enjoy this album. It's probably my favorite CD this year, of all genres.

3 out of 5 stars Very Technical Power.......2007-07-13

Hammerfall's "Threshold" is a classic power metal CD, which basically means loads of power riffs, good solid percussion and tight, rhythmic vocals that all work together to produce a very technical and complex sound.

The tracks are a good range from speed and thumping sections to the more rhythmic and complex periods. The change overs on the guitars are all well executed and go off very smoothly. Each musician works in with the others to produce a great level of harmony.

The vocals are generally very good, especially those of Cans, who has wide range from fairly low to very high tones. The backing vocals got a bit flat in some tracks,(such as "Howlin' With The 'Pac"), but that is a minor criticism when taken on balance with the positives.

For those looking for something mind-numbingly heavy, this is not it. However, for some good solid power metal, Hammerfall have a lot to offer. The songs are generally pretty good, and the sound is generally tight. I have to admit to being generally impressed.

5 out of 5 stars At the Threshold of the Univers ............2007-05-31

I love this whole album, and I recommend it to everybody that is looking for power metal/hard rock. But for the beginner, I would recommend to start with Legacy of Kings and Renegade. These albums are phenomenal! Joacim Cans has a very melodic voice, he is a very good lyricist, years of training can tell that and he's voice is so much apart from other singers, just amazing, when you look at him you would not think that he can sing so good, yet slow and clear not raspy and not understandeble. Another band that I think will follow in their shoes are Dionysus, the lead singer did the baking vocals on Legacy Of Kings, and he works with Joacim Cans on more projects. Sonata Arctica is another band that has very good influences yet they are different from other bands. Please disregards the negative comments on this album, the band is very good, this album when was released in Europe, especially in Sweden was released at number 1 and stay in top for the next few weeks. This did not happened since Roxette years ago, so this should say something, plus Sweden loves them a lot. This year Hammerfall is celebrating 10 years and they are releasing a new the best of... cd in October I think, I can't wait! So stay tuned, the band got a new very good bass player and there is more to come!

3 out of 5 stars Threshold of Mediocrity.......2007-05-24

I'm a huge fan of Hammerfall's first two albums, but I stopped following the band after Renegade which I felt was disapointing. I picked up the newest Hammerfall release just to see what they've been up to lately since I hadn't purchased their last two albums Crimson Thunder or Chapter 5.

This album isn't all bad. A few tracks such as Genocide, Fire Burns, and Natural High are good, but this is nowhere near a solid effort as their earlier material such as Legacy of Kings and Glory to the Brave.

For me Hammerfall is a band of A level musicians who are currently writing C level music. My advice to fans who are considering getting into Hammerfall would be to skip this album and pick up Legacy of Kings instead which is their greatest album.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome :D.......2007-05-13

It was an awesome album. It felt different but it was still good. I woulnt see why a Hammerfall fan would not like this one. It is still Hammerfall ! :D

5 out of 5 stars ignore the negative reviews! HammerFall rocks!.......2007-04-01

this is sadly the last album with Magnus Rosen as bass player. hopefully, HammerFall will acquire a talented bassist to fill his shoes. that said, ignore the negative reviews on this album. this is tops. standout tracks? as far as I am concerned, the whole album stands out. like I said, hopefully, HammerFall will get a new bass player to fill in Magnus Rosen's shoes.

Album Description

The UK´s No. 1 Progressive Metal Export is back with a new masterpiece! Two years on from Critical Mass and after six months of intense writing, recording and producing, Threshold's 7th studio album Subsurface is done. Subsurface is in some respect a continuation of the direction the band started to explore with Critical Mass, yet in many other ways is a brash, audacious step forward. It retains their progressive roots and heavy approach whilst enhancing the accessibility of their overall sound to produce their strongest album yet. From the brooding, all embracing Mission Profile that opens the album, through to the emotionally charged epic Flags and Footprints, the band manage to captivate the listener with their distinct blend of cutting edge progressive metal. The artwork was designed by Thomas Ewerhard whom was responsible for the classic covers of Clone, Hypothetical, Critical Mass and Critical Energy.

The Special Edition features the bonus track What About Me and multimedia with the Pressure video, a special screensaver and photo gallery.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums of progressive metal.......2007-02-12

Threshold hits the top here. This is all i can say, this is a great work.
Only comparable to the album: "Hipotetical".
I recommend that everyone must listen a album before to buy, but i higly recommend this one!

5 out of 5 stars Smashing Through the Surface!.......2007-02-01

I'm relatively new to Threshold, but I did hear Hypothetical and Critical Mass before I checked out Subsurface. I was intrigued by Hypothetical, but CM didn't do much for me - I found it comparatively flat and uninteresting. I was hesitant to check out Subsurface because of some negative reviews I had read. Thankfully, this record blew those preconceptions to pieces!

Subsurface is a very tasteful, very mature work of progressive rock/metal art. The balance of musical influences is usually a perfect blend - it rocks hard, it's soft and subtle exactly where it needs to be, and it's just prog-enough to keep you on your toes. This latest release from Threshold is immediately accessible, and yet, the album models a fine wine, offering more flavor over time.

I'd have to say that my favorite thing about this record is the musical variety packed into almost every song. Threshold has the rare ability to smoothly (and I mean VERY smoothly) transition from major-metal to minor-melancholy to prog-pop to whatevertheywant, and it always sounds completely natural. The maturity in songwriting and execution is outstanding - it's a shame that this level of musicianship is rarely found in today's music, be it mainstream or underground.

One of the great things about this band (and there are several) is that they actually sound like a BAND instead of a group of highly talented artists who simply take turns tastelessly demonstrating how they've mastered their instruments. Threshold's focus is clearly on the quality of the song as a whole, always utilizing solos and technicality with uncommon subtlety and grace. The performance is cohesive, their songwriting is top-notch, and the crystal-clear production quality compliments all that the band has to offer.

I've heard that Threshold's next offering will be a bit darker and heavier. If that means a return to the ways of Critical Mass, I think they'll be limiting their capacity to create intelligent and colorful progressive metal. Let's hope that Dead Reckoning is a heavy AND natural step in the right direction!

3 out of 5 stars Get this only if you have all of the previous Threshold albums........2005-10-28

This is a sad review. Threshold is one of my favourite contemporary bands, Shadow Gallery and Ark being the other two. In fact, there isn't a single song in their catalog(except uneven Clone album), that I would rate as less than great. Something is changed here though, and it is even more inexplicable because it comes on the heels of the absolutely amazing Critical Mass record. What happened to the great riffs, complex choruses, songs full of ideas? The songs now seem devoid of ideas, dragging on by repeating some catchy notes. In addition to obvious problems with songwriting, the singer is singing with pop overtones that remind me of Bon Jovi(that's the worst comparison in my book). Don't get me wrong, if you've never heard Threshold, you probably won't be as nearly dissapointed as I am. Threshold set the standard so high with albums like Extinct Instinct (Damien Wilson on vocals) , Hypothetical(Glynn Morgan on vocals) and Critical Mass (with the same singer as this album), and it is difficult to come down to this. It is not really that stylistic differences, that bother me, after all Hypothetical was quite different from much of what preceded it, it's the lack of ideas and the singer's insistence on interpreting the material in the most poppy way possible. Get this only if you have all of the previous Threshold albums.

5 out of 5 stars A musical journey like no other!.......2005-04-14

When I first put my headphones on (so as not to wake my sleeping wife...shhh!!!) and listened to Threshold's latest offering "Subsurface", I had no idea what I was in for! This is truly music for the new millenium and Threshold has taken a firm 'hold' on defining the genre for the coming years. This disc is the kind of emotional roller coaster that lyrically harkens back to the finest moments of Pink Floyd and musically was like hearing Stratovarius for the first time (I know...it has been a while though:-). I have not experienced chills when hearing a song for the very first time in a long while, but several on this masterpiece did just that! Including the opener "Mission Profile" and "The Art Of Reason"...WOW! Just unbelievable music! I'm not a big lyrics guy either, but I must say that Threshold's message is one I firmly believe in and stand for. All I can say is I can't wait to see (and hear!) what these guys will deliver next. For now however, I'm more than happy and content to play this cd until the thing-a-ma-bob-a-jigger whirlygig in my cd player quits spinning! 5 out of 5.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Threshold album so far.......2005-04-08

I've read all the reviews here and i appreciate all of them, both the positive and the negative. For reference, I own all of the Threshold recordings, including the live recordings and fan club stuff. I totally understand the critics who take issue with this album because it is "prog-metal lite" or "art rock", because Threshold have made a point on this recording to push the melodies forward a notch. And what a difference it makes! Instead of an average prog-metal album where you have to listen 5 times just to digest the tracks and decipher the melodies, on Subsurface you're instantly engaged in cinematic bliss from the first track. Proggers don't fret: there are still time changes, epic swells, keyboard flourishes, etc., but the hooks and melodies are the driving force here and every song is catchy and memorable. I'm so glad Threshold has evolved to this point. Subsurface is a successful blend of prog metal and pop songwriting.

Briefly put, if you don't know Threshold yet, this is the album to start with, as it is the most accessible so far and has the greatest percentage of strong melodies. Give it a listen!

5 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect .......2006-11-17

Buy this; you will absolutely not regret it. This album is fantastic. After a few missses, Keith found the open lane and Polaroid' is a glass shattering slam dunk. Props also must be given to the other hands present on this album... nobody lags. Keith STILL manages to rap about sharks, diapers and Elvis 10 years later. There's classic lines you will be quoting til Keith's next release.

"I'm Libra" and "Diamond District" are my current favorites, but that can change daily. Keith's left field line from "Talk to the Romans"~"Mike Piazza, I'm poppin' a lotta blaza blaza" almost had me swerve off the highway the first time it played, I was laughing so hard. It's on par with the untouchable "Welfare Love Section 8" from the mighty Dooom album.

This has the potential to take the crown for 2006... it is really that good.

5 out of 5 stars Two dope releases in one year? From Kool Keith? Uh-oh........2006-11-09

Honestly, this scares me. Hardcore Keith fans know what I'm talking about; we've come to expect a steady pattern of dope album, wack album, average album, dope album, wack album, average album over the years from Keith. Dr. Octagon and Dr. Dooom were classic albums, and Diesel Truckers and Matthew, while not classics, were above average; then you had the Sex Styles and Spankmasters from his catalogue, which weren't exactly setting the world on fire. No one could doubt that Keith's one of the illest in the game, but at the same time, you knew that Keith fed his fanbase just as much Roman noodles as he did gourmet cuisines.

That's why Project Polaroid frightens me; Keith, earlier in the year, also released another dope album, Mr. Nogatco's Nogatco Rd.. I expected him to go on his traditional downward spiral in musical quality from there, but Keith pulled a complete 180, and followed up that album with one even doper. Two Kool Keith albums of such high quality released in one year is shocking, to say the very least; not because Keith doesn't have the skills to do such(believe me, he has more than enough), but just because of his crude track record.

TOMC3 is an unknown cat, to even some of the most hardcore heads; but he definitely works magic behind the boards. The production on this album is dope, and highly different from anything Keith's had to work with in the past; although he undoubtedly sounds best when paired with Dan the Automator or Kutmasta Kurt, he sounds just as at home over TOMC3's tight beats.

Keith's rhymes, and flows? Ridiculously ill. Keith manages to stay on beat throughout the album(a very rare occurence for Keith, as even on classic albums like Dr. Octagonecologyst, Keith drifted off into outerspace[literally] whilst flowing), and provides both of his distinctive forms when it comes to lyrics; the cat who's obsessed with science-fiction films, and the cat who will rip sucker emcees up whenever they approach him on the microphone.

This takes elements of Keith's classic albums from the past, and manages to mold them into a classic album in the same vein; the dark backdrop is entirely appropriate for Keith's rhymes, and the bugged-out subject matter is exactly what Keith's fans adore him for. Two dope albums in one year from the legend - could a third be on its way? Whether his next release is sublime, or subpar, it doesn't matter - Project Polaroid is a must have for fans of Keith, and hip-hop in general.

5 out of 5 stars Best Kool Keith Album for Ten Years!.......2006-06-14

This album is great. I disagree that it sounds like Dan the Automator, I think it is totally different. But that was what made the Automator's work stand out and is what makes this album stand out. The Automator's work had a more industrial sound to it, this is more funk and soul influenced and is better for it.

So much clever use of sampling and layering along with the excellent beats make this a classic. Kool Keith's experimental word play and unusual flow really draw your ears in and make you really listen (and wonder!) to what's being said. I always knew Kool Keith could do it again...

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2006-05-14

This the return of the Kool Keith we got to know and love in the late 90s/early 2000s. This is definitely the best thing Keith has done since Spankmaster, and the sound is closer to Octagon than anything he's done since (including Nogatco.) This is a big comeback for Keith. Lately his projects have been a little less than spectacular, but this one is phenomonal. If you are a fan of Masters of Illusion, Sex Style, Dooom, Octagon, go pick this up immediately! The production by Tom C is amazing. Definitely tops my list of Hip Hop albums this year.

5 out of 5 stars KEITH IS BACK IN FORM!!!!.......2006-05-01

This is a refreshing release. Way better than what he has been doing as of late. If you like to hear Keith on Lo-Fi samples, then this is it! It doesnt have that overly synthy sound that he has been doing lately.I personally, was annoyed with the recent stuff. The only thing I wish, was if there was extra stuff on the cd, like videos etc..But, I'm always finding something to complain about. It was hard to find something to complain about with this! Check out Mechanical Mechanix , the song with Prince po. Its craaazy!!! I'm really lovin this album. Along with Ghostfaces album fishscale, it looks like Hip Hop is heading in the right direction this year!!! Go and get this album. One of the best for 2006. And another classic for Poppa Large Mr Kool Keith!!!

5 out of 5 stars Shining example of progressive metal!.......2005-04-26

This is one of my absolute favourite CDs. Not only is it my favourite among my Threshold collection - and not a shabby one among them - it is one CD I am always in the mood to listen to.
This also ranks as one of the best debut albums of all time. Based on the ideas and themes in Stephen Donaldson's Thomas Covenant trilogies - see "Lord Foul's Bane" and "The Wounded Land" (from which the title of this CD came) for starters.
Features the excellent vocals of the unparalleled Damian Wilson, who left the band and later returned for the album Extinct Instinct. You can also hear Damian's contributions vocally to Star One and Ayreon. Those are also highly recommended. The Wounded Land is also a great introduction to the duel metal guitar craft of Nick Midson and Karl Groom.
Highlights (if forced to choose some favourites) include: Mother Earth, Sanity's End, Paradox, Keep It With Mine.
Definitely a must have for the serious music fan.

5 out of 5 stars An impressive debut CD........2004-08-03

This is Threshold's first album on a remastered CD, with one additional track. And what an impressive debut this was! From the start, Threshold established themselves as one of the best bands in progressive metal. Although similar in certain respects to early Queensryche, their style is actually quite original. Their trademark sound features a combination of heavy rhythm guitars and keyboards, creating a very full background. The lead guitar and upper-range, cream-textured vocals trace out complex melodic themes. The lyrics are intelligent, dealing with such themes as environmental degradation, and the Gulf War. The songwriting is consistently strong; every track on this CD, ranging from the epics to more concise hard rock tracks, is a pleasure to listen to.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Threshold releases ever.......2006-04-17

Out of all the Threshold albums that have been reviewed, "Extinct Instinct" seems to have been overlooked the most. Why? I consider this album to be the "hidden gem" in the Threshold archives. Damien Wilson came back to do the vocals for this album - and he did a stellar performance. There are alot of fans who will say that "Wounded Land" was better, but I disagree.
As good as WL was, this album is ten times better. The album is a perfect combination of "Phsycedelicatessen" and there debut. On
"Wounded Land" the guitars arn't as heavy. But on this one guitarists Karl Groom and Nick Midson are responsible for cranking out some heavy riffs. Damien's vocals are soaring, and
emotional. My favorite from this disc was "Eat the Unicorn". This has to be the most progresive Threshold song ever. It's heavy, it's melodic, and gives you a dark beutiful feeling inside. They completley just ignored the rules and went for it. That is what I love about this album, it just keeps suprising you. If any Threshold fan does not have this one yet - Extinct Instinct is a must. That's saying alot, because all of their albums contain some of the best music the prog world has to offer. I'm sorry if other fans don't feel the same way about this disc, but I just wanted to give it the attention that I thought it deserved.

4 out of 5 stars Innovative progressive rock.......2004-07-25

This is Threshold's third CD, remastered, with additional tracks. Original singer Damian Wilson returned to the fold for this CD, with the result that it sounds rather like their debut, Wounded Land. Threshold has a distinctive style. Heavy rhythm guitars and keyboard backgrounds create a wall of sound. Ethereal lead guitars and melifluous vocals soar over it. The melodic ideas are often complex, but there are some catchy hooks. The songwriting here is a bit more experimental (and hence a bit less consistent) than on this band's other CDs, but on the whole, this album contains some innovative, progressive material.

4 out of 5 stars DECENT TRIP-HOP.......2006-12-08

I am a huge trip-hop fan and have literally hundreds of trip-hop CD's. This CD is better than average. One of the rappers sounds like DR' Octogon, who made one of the best trip-hop CD's EVER.

4 out of 5 stars There is hope.......2006-05-20

I gave up on Keith and then... I picked up this album. I had the "Partners Confused" 12" and was impressed, but by the time this dropped I already moved on. Later on I picked this CD up on a whim and was given hope for Kool Keith.

Kutmaster Kurt takes up the production and brings his signature sound of hard drums and stabbing samples. No doubt the beats bang on this joint and Keith and Motion Man flow so naturaly over the tracks. A very solid listen and a breath of hope for the Keith fans that thought his only moment of greatness was Doc Oc and Ultra.

5 out of 5 stars Motion Man soars.......2005-11-01

I'd have to say that Motion Man shines on this album, doing a lot better than Kool Keith. Keith is a classic, but in recent years he has lost track of himself. Motion Man has a better grasp of his lyrics and lyrical content; it is no surprise that my 2 favourite tracks are both Motion Man-only tracks: "Magnum Be I" and "Call the National Guard".

KutMasta Kurt is a great DJ/producer, his production is brilliant. The album also features several guest scratches/cuts by other DJs, including DJ Revolution. There are no guest verses from other emcees on this album.

Overall, 4/5 (but I'll give it a 5 just because). I'm not sure of this Amazon.com disc, but my one came with a free disc full of instrumental tracks.

4 out of 5 stars Much better than I was expecting........2005-10-22

After all the crap i've been hearing from Keith latley (Analog Brothers, Dr. Octagon 2, Thee Undertakerz, Lost Masters) I pretty much lost all faith in Keith, but this record slipped right under my nose. I never even heard about it. It was on here for 4 bucks so I figured why not? Well, I was very pleasently suprised. It's obvious that when Kurt teams with Keith they can do no wrong. While it's far from being Keith's best, this album has sick flow and sick beats to back the flow. Keith and Motion both do a good job. There are quite a few weak tracks though, the best tracks are definetly "U Want Freestyle?" and "Step Up". These 2 tracks alone are worth the 4 bucks I paid. There are only like 3 songs on the album that are unlistenable. Which is pretty good considering the 20 some odd tracks that are unlistenable on all of the albums mentioned above. I do like Dr. Dooom alot better though. I compare because it is basically the same trio (Keith, Kurt, Motion) and I notice that there's a cut from "Housing Authority" from Dr. Dooom in one track. I find that any album that Keith has made before 2002 is worth a listen. If you see a Keith album that was made in 2002 and above, avoid it at all costs (except the ones done with Kurt). So that means I have one Keith album left to hear "Sex Style". Which is gonna cost me a pretty penny. Anywayz if your a fan of Keith, Kurt, Motion, or just plain hip-hop. Check this album out.

5 out of 5 stars Album is second best...only to Dr.Octagon.......2005-03-01

I mean we all like Kool Keith for some reason. Whether it be for his 20 something years of rap service, Ultramagnetic M.C.s, Dr. Dooom, Dr. Octagon, Kool Keith, Matthew, Diesel Truckers, Analog Brothers...etc.etc. He has a persona that can land him any rap time. I admit that his more recent albums have been...well...plain poopy, but you can't blame the guy for trying.

I first heard of Kool Keith when my friend bought the Ultramagnetic M.C.s album, but what really got me into him was Dr. Octagon. THAT was his best. I mean that album drove me bananas. Then came Dr. Dooom, which everybody SEEMED to like, but I really didn't like it a lot. It was not bad though. I LOVED Masters of Illusion though.

It showed a Dr. Octagon(ish)type of playfulness, yet Sex Style type vulgartiy and complexity. And with the ellaborate Kut Masta Kurt on the Tables of Fables, his hands were telling more haunting stories than Stephen King. What kept this album going, was the fact tha Keith had time to wirte down good raps.

Not like what he does today. I mean he released like 4 albums last year. Who is he now? Master P jr.?

He should rekindle his Dr.Octagon days, and stir us up another K.K. concoction, that will drive us insane.

PEACE
