About the Artist
Brad Smith lives with his wife and two children in surburban Los Angeles. It is here that he makes his living as a composer, arranger, and performer. Brad's music has been heard on every major American television network and cable station, as well as throughout Europe, Japan, Australia, and Canada. Over the years he has written for and performed on literally hundreds of television shows, movies, commercials, and albums. He says that after faith and family, music is the great love of his life.

Album Description

The excitement and wonder of Broadway in the '80's and '90's is captured magnificently on this carefully crafted collection of solo piano arrangements by Emile Pandolfi. The songs on this album were thoughtfully selected because of the intense, heart-gripping moments they created on stage in the particular musicals for which they were written. Emile on Broadway; " Music that comes from the stage is, for me, the most natural to arrange and play. With melodies and lyrics that are already so moving, I find that my hardest tasks are settling on the final selections; and, as ideas seem to pour out of my fingers, I must decide when an arrangement is complete. Emile is always good, but this selection of songs is really good! Good to listen to, good for background. Lots better than Prozac for a mood improvement.

A real good selection.......2006-04-27

Even if I don't own this CD (stuff I have on 33 rpm), I had to approve the other critics here. To know Barbara Cook is to participate to the Great Broadway Era with one of its essential star performer.
Cook was made for the stage and, following next, her live shows are quite impressive. Her voice can be tiny at times, but who doesn't get older?
Just listen to Glitter and be Gay: a Bernstein masterpiece, but a Cook personal creation. (Only Sumi Jo made it as good on her Carnegie Hall show).
All B'way fan should know Barbara Cook...

good overview of her broadway career.......2005-02-06

Before Barbara Cook became a cabaret performer, she was a fantastic Broadway star. This out of print cd focuses on the songs from her revivals and original productions with the omission of The Glass Harp. It goes chronologically from the beginning of her career with the shows Candide, Plain and Fancy, and Flahooley. (Sadly they were flops.) Then it reaches The Music Man where she finally became a star. Her Till There was You is marvelous. The last three songs are from her 1975 At Carnegie Hall album. I wish that this was replaced with numbers from her shows. It doesn't quite fit in with the phase. I guess this cd wanted to be an outlook on her career in general. Barbara Cook had a clear warm soprano. If only her 1958 album Songs of Perfect Propriety could be released.

A Broadway legend appreciated.......1999-07-02

Just to hear her voice intentionally break with emotion on "Dear Friend" will affect you deeply. This is a fine document of a great career and a stunning voice. You will treasure it.

Best compilation of Black's Broadway medleys.......1998-11-09

The 1950s and '60s featured many orchestras and bandleaders (e.g. Mantovani, 101 Strings) doing versions and medleys of leading Broadway showtunes. And why not? This was the golden age of the Broadway shows, with top composers pumping out memorable melodies every year. London Records asked Stanley Black to put together two albums of Broadway medleys, and they are collected for the first time, using quality tapes (unlike an earlier, incomplete version), and include blockbuster versions of "Oklahoma," "Ol' Man River," and "Bali Ha'i." The first 10 cuts are from the killer "Broadway Spectacular" LP, the second 10 from its followup. The first 10 cuts are frankly better, but the second 10 has several winners, including rousing versions of Loesser's "Big D" and "Standing on the Corner," from "Most Happy Fella"; a stirring version of "Lawd I'm on My Way" from "Porgy"; and a fun version of Coleman's "Hey Look Me Over." But the real treat in this collection are the two Rodgers instrumentals in the first half -- "Carousel Waltz" and especially "Slaughter on Tenth Avenue." Black uses expansive, exciting orchestrations to create definitive cover versions. "Slaughter," which rarely receives the attention it deserves, was the ballet sequence from Rodgers & Hart's "On Your Toes." It's slam-bang urban magic, melodic as only Rodgers could create in his heyday. Hey, I love the originals of these songs from original cast albums. But these orchestral covers are extraordinary, and a must for the serious Broadway fan.

A Broadway Success!.......2000-04-20

It seems like previous reviewers have missed the point of this album. The lastest incarnation of Peter Shaffer's masterpiece, "Amadeus," starring David Suchet, Michael Sheen, and Cindy Katz, is captured in essence on this CD. No one seems to realize that it is NOT supposed to be a sampling of all of Mozart's great works, but a selection of what musical accompaniment was used in performance. As far as that goes, this recording is accurate and enticing. It must also be understood that the play version of Shaffer's script is very different from the later film adaptation. Listeners, respect this album for what it attests to be, not what you misunderstand it to be. Thank you!

What purpose does this CD serve?.......2000-02-11

Sony would have done us all a better service had they given us the Shaffer play, dialogue and music, rather than just another rehash of bits and pieces from longer works. Ignorning the nonsense of this being an "official companion" to the play (did the spirit of Mozart give his permission?) as the press release puts it, what we have here is 10 selections from 4 operas, 2 piano concerti, 1 symphony, 1 serenade, and 1 requiem by the Master in very fine performances in no particular order. They are all well performed--Te Kanawa is enchanting as Pamina--and might whet someone's interest in hearing the complete works. Perhaps it will make Baby smarter.

However as a tie-in with the current production on Broadway, I can see no artistic purpose. My 3 stars are for the beauty of the music and the quality of the performances. And perhaps someone actually will take up the idea of committing the entire play to discs or better still to videos. Now that would be a real tie-in!

An Excellent Introduction.......2000-02-04

"How do you do, Herre Mozart?" "Verr Gut!" This compilation serves as a fair sampler to what waits in store for those listeners who are moved by the music of W.A. Mozart. The recording starts off with a bang (Symphony No. 25 G minor, K183), then moves into the most delightful, tender serenade. With helpings of 'Don Giovanni', the great Requiem in D minor, K626 and, of course, other choice cuts; this album is worth exploring for the Mozart newcomer. Caveat Emptor: Mozart is even more than this album suggests.
