Sahara Snow

Editorial Reviews

About the Artist
Sahara Snow formed in 1995 when Rick Springfield and Tim Pierce, met keyboard guru Bob Marlette. The trio forged a bond through extensive writing and recording sessions. Those sessions yielded their first album, full of R&B tinged dance grooves, aggressive guitars and lush vocal arrangements. Rick Springfield is a GRAMMY award winning writer/singer from Australia. Among his 17 singles to reach the TOP 20 are such hits as "Jessie's Girl", "Celebrate Youth", "Don't Talk To Strangers", "Human Touch", Affair Of The Heart" and "Love Somebody". He has toured the world numerous times and is working on his 13th solo album. Tim Pierce came to LA to join a band and to make records. Tim played with Springfield on records and tours from '82 thru '88 then went to pursue a career as a studio musician and songwriter. Tim's guitar can be heard on records by such diverse artists as MICHAEL JACKSON, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, TINA TURNER, ROD STEWART, and CELINE DION. He released his first solo album called "Guitarland" in 1995 and is working on movie and TV soundtracks, recording and songwriting. Bob Marlette moved to L.A. in 1979. He had his first big break as musical arranger for British singer AL STEWART. He has written and played with artists such as SHERYL CROW, TRACY CHAPMAN, EMERSON, LAKE & PALMER and has produced albums by JUDAS PRIEST, JOHN WETTON, NEIL SCHON and many more. Bob is currently writing and producing on several projects including TOMY IOMMY and BLACK SABBATH.

5 out of 5 stars Look no further, there is no better Anggun. She is one and only........2007-05-31

This album may please music lovers of variety of genres: pop, jazz, rock, and classics. All this is due to the incredible voice that moves through ups and downs flawlessly, shouts and whispers, stops and rains, involves and pushes aside, waves welcome and good bye. All these oppositions are in one voice, the voice of Anggun. Incredible highs and mellow lows are a short description of the pleasing experience of listening to the CD.

The music is the blend of pop-rock and ethnic melodies. Such songs as "Snow On The Sahara", "By The Moon", "Life On Mars" became the international hits. They are catchy with well-memorable tunes. Once you hear them you will always recognize the songs no matter where you hear them the next time. And, this is true to the Anggun's overall performance. She is really recognizable!

The voice is beautifully surrounded and promoted by the music arrangements. The band supports the singer perfectly. The instruments are loud but never over the voice. The voice always stays in front and clear. The sound engineering is good, thanks to Sony.

The album is a great effort by Anggun. I personally consider the album as the best in Anggun's discography and recommend it to any music fan. Start your incredible music journey today!

Anggun isn't just another beautiful woman promoted by a record company solely based on her looks. Yes, she is incredibly attractive but there's also a voice to complete the package.

Her exotic Indonesian looks are well complimented by a smooth, husky and seductive voice that strongly reminds me of a young Annie Lennox. A comparison especially evident in track 1 - Snow On The Sahara - and track 7 - Selamanya -.

Definitely a strong debut album/CD, proving you can be both beautiful and talented at the same time.

5 out of 5 stars Miraculous music from the wonderful Anggun.......2005-10-19

If you don't believe snow could fall on the Sahara, it means you haven't listened to this cd yet! Anggun, who has one of the most incredible voices in the world, really does make you believe anything's possible - her music can bring so much hope, light and beauty into your life. All of her songs have an amazing feel to them - dreamy, bit oriental and...full of air and wind. I know it may sound abstract, but you'll certainly find out it's true, when you listen to Anggun's music. Take my word for it. What's more, this album features one of the best songs in the pop music history - "Snow on the Sahara" - an ultimate anthem of hope and wisdom; if I were to choose the greatest song of 90's, that would be the one. Don't hestitate for a second and get one of the best cd's of the last decade, from one of the most inspiring and talented living artists.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best albums in the past 10 years.......2005-07-02

Anggun was one of Indonesia's superstars. When she left Indonesia in 1995, settled first in UK and eventually moved to France, no one ever imagined that there'd be someone from indonesia doing this AMAZING stuff. I'm very proud of her : a true talent from my homeland, singing in 3 different languages, and making such a phenomenal work. 'Snow' is a remarkable work; mixing beautiful world sounds and graceful new age music plus pop-rock influences. Seriously, you can hardly find music like this expecially in a full-commercial music industry nowadays.

While the sales of Sarah Brightman's ambitious, Middle Eastern-themed 2003 album Harem may have fallen short of its predecessor, the veteran UK chanteuse's popularity as a live performer has only mushroomed. This live recording of her ambitious, sold-out Harem World Tour engagement at Las Vegas' MGM Grand Arena is testament to that appeal, begging the question: Will Brightman become the Grateful Dead of classical crossover? Indeed, abetted by the rich sonic textures of longtime producer/collaborator Frank Peterson, the worldbeat conceits of her recent studio recordings are folded into a larger, even more expansive live vision here. Brightman's overt dramatic instincts and oft-chaemeleonic vocal abilities drive a slate of material that stretches from the Arabian Nights/Madame Butterflypastiche of Harem's seductive "It's A Beautiful Day" through surprisingly effective classical/rock reinventions of Kansas' "Dust in the Wind" and The Moody Blues' chestnut "Nights in White Satin" to expected classical bowings "Nessun Dorma" and the obligatory nod to "Phantom of the Opera" Amazon.com

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING! She is so much better live!.......2006-12-02

This CD rocks! This is Sarah Brightman on her Harem World Tour, and this performance was recorded at her stop in Las Vegas. The first two tracks, "Kama Surta" and "Harem Overture" debut from her newest album, entitled HAREM. The two tracks are connected, but in the actual Harem Tour, the full piece "Harem" is sung. If you go to www.youtube.com and type in "Harem Tour" in the Search Bar, you can see live videos. I would prefer that the album has placed "Harem" instead of these other two tracks. The third track, "It's A Beautiful Day", is from Madame Butterfly, written by Puccini. This version is Brightman's twist, which some more pop and some English. It's pretty cool. The fourth track on the album, "Dust in the Wind" is from EDEN, an amazing album. Track 5 is, "Who Wants to Live Forever", and it seems as though Brightman never creates a tour without putting this piece in it. It's a beautiful tribute to Queen's rendition. Track Six is "Anytime, Anywhere", also from EDEN. I'm not really into the Foreign Language - English songs, but this works very well, especially because she ends the song with the classical foreign language. The seventh track is Brightman's rendition of Dvorak's "Song to the Moon", or "La Luna". The track is beautiful! The eighth track is Puccini's "Nessun Dorma", and Sarah masters this beautifully! There is no other soprano I know that can sing this piece one octave up and can hold the ending note for ever!!! Track 9 is "The War is Over", which is followed by "Free", both from HAREM. Track 11 is "A Whiter Shade of Pale", from LA LUNA. It's beautiful to listen to. Sarah's version is very gentle, but has a lot of energy in the chorus. The twelfth track on this album is "Twisted Every Way", followed by an instrumental version of "The Phantom of the Opera" Theme. The next track is "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again", which is extended at the end, in which you hear some men cry out "WE LOVE YOU SARAH!", and she responds cutely with an, "I love you, too." The audience laughs! Track 14 is "Time to Say Goodbye", the duet that made Andrea Bocelli famous, and skyrocketed as the number one single sold in German history! The last live track on the album is "A Question of Honour", from "Fly", which is awesome! The last track on the album is a bonus track, which I don't really prefer. However, the whole album is simply amazing. I much prefer Sarah when she is live. She has a more magical quality! If you love Sarah Brightman, then you will love this album.

ALSO RECOMMENDED : Since there is so much Sarah Brightman to choose from, I also recommend EDEN, TIME TO SAY GOODBYE, LA LUNA, CLASSICS, and DIVA.

What an album, absolutly beautiful!
We, the fans of this great artist finelly have in our hands a live album, and it's amazing:
-The voice is totaly live, she sang about 24 complete songs in the show, but the album only contains 15.
-Snow In The Sahara is a lovely song.

If you have the chase of get this alubum, don't doubt and get it; It wond disapoint you!

5 out of 5 stars astounding performance.......2005-06-07

an impeccable concert experience that successfully elevates the album to majestic heights. I had long been a fan of Dead Can Dance and the unparalleled work of Lisa Gerrard. When Sarah Brightman ventured into these Middle Eastern sounds on the Harem disc, I thought it was too derivative of the Dead Can Dance sounds (there is even a sample used on one of SB's songs that had previously been used within DCD).

However, experiencing this epic and intensely mystical concert compelled me to realize the individual and unique glory of Sarah Brightman. Also, this concert is so phenomenally entertaining at many levels that I couldn't help but fall absolutely in love with the special magic of Sarah Brightman. Obviously, the expansive Middle Eastern milieu can accommodate more than one angelic vocalist!

I now consider Lisa Gerrard and Sarah Brightman to be geniuses who both warrant goddess status in the pantheon of lyrical greats. To see either one of them perform live is surely one of the most powerful and memorable sensory experiences one could ever have!

4 out of 5 stars Great, of course.......2005-03-18

Sarah's voice and style are terrific, as usual. However, I have to say that her version of Anggun's "Snow on the Sahara" is fairly bland, especially compared to the original Anggun version. Sarah has the chops but lacks soul on this great song. Everything els here is very nice.

3 out of 5 stars Disco Duck Springfield?!.......2002-01-14

Hoooold awn, there, pardners!!For those of you that love Rick's solo stuff (as I do),let's get something straightened out here! The 'editorial review' is RIGHT ON in describing this disc when it talks of 80's funk&groove,dance-mix oriented songs found on Sahara Snow!Sure,it DOES have Rick's great songwriting abilities and flare-and to his credit the songs are all really strong. What you need to know before deciding to get this is: did you love synth dance/pop in the 80's? ( I guess most WOMEN did). But if you are more of a straight ahead pop/rock person (Rick's solo material)and get a little annoyed with the same style 'song after song'(ala dance mix) then you might want to pass this one up! Try 'KARMA' from '99-it's AWESOME!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Rick Springfield effort.......2002-01-02

Despite the band credit, in essence this is a Rick Springfield cd. Yet an unusual one: heavier than usual, with some driving melodies as well as some really great lyrics to match his always-strong vocals. Well worth seeking out and absolutely essential for Springfield fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Rick ever!.......2001-09-05

I bought this cd recently, wish I had known about it sooner! It is an import, but if you like it "hard and fast",you have to hear this one!
The guitar work is killer! The hardest, edgiest, sexiest,Rick music ever!
Everything from a moving ballad like Somewhere, to the sexiness of Heaven, and Lust, to the rocking Scandulous life!
This is the Best Rick EVER! If you are a Rick fan, this is a MUST HAVE, you simply HAVE TO HAVE this one!
If you're not a Rick fan, every fan of 80's music would also enjoy it!
I would also recommend Karma, and Alive!

4 out of 5 stars A Must For Any Rick Springfield Fan!.......2001-01-28

If you think that 80's music should just die... then don't buy this album. It has a very 80's feel to it, very reminicent of Rick Springfield's "Tao" days. To me, this is a good thing. This CD came out in 1997 and Rick's most recent solo CD "Karma" came out in 1998 so you get a dose of classic and new Rick Springfield music over a 2 year span. It took me a few years to actually break down and buy this CD since it is not a solo CD and I wish I had bought it earlier. This CD is a must for any Rick Springfield fan.

Snow On The Sahara is a promising debut effort from the adult contemporary singer Anggun. She tackles polished ballads, Latin-pop, dance-pop and even a David Bowie penned track, demonstrating that she can sing all the styles quite well. This Asian version

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful....overally!.......2005-02-26

Anggun.....a very wonderful singer. She is a gift and one of the greatest artist in the planet. We both are from Indonesia and I'm very proud of her-as an Indonesian-cause she is truly wonderful and no singer is quite like her in here. She brings along a truly new, fresh and wonderful music...that I can really enjoy to.Anggun should be recognized in the US...for her wonderful music. It's a shame people like Simple Plan and all other 'straight-candy-punk-pop-rock' bands out there.I'm truly inspired by her mesmerizing music and I wish I could make a beautiful music at least as well as she does.I want to be a singer too...and I'm gonna be the second Indonesian singer that will rock music scene. So,world, one day you'll hear, know me ,my name,my music .Just remember this name :Fajar and you will see me make albums in the future.I promise I'll be there on 2006 or 2007!.See ya and to Anggun, keep making wonderful music!!!

(FAVE SONGS : The entire songs of 'Snow On The Sahara' and the first 8 tracks of 'Chrysalis' plus 'Broken Dream...I haven't bought "Open Hearts" and looking forward to buying that!)

5 out of 5 stars Just beautiful beyond words.......2004-10-06

Out of the blue came a surprisingly original new sound from a rare entity that brings along truly original and rich music, something that has become a sad rarity in the excessively corporate arena these days. This 1998 debut from Indonesian singer Anggun entitled "Snow On The Sahara" is one of the most delightful and most exotic sounding albums to have ever been released in U.S. stores. As I write this review, this is the only album that I'm aware of that she has released in the United States and this is a sad thing. This CD is a diamond in the rough waiting to be found. The title track just blew me away when I first heard it back in the spring and summer of 1998 and although I loved it then when I saw the video in VH-1 in 1998, the song seemingly vanished from the airwaves in the U.S. for a long time before I finally rediscovered this in 2003, five full years late, and when I finally bought it, even as I loved the title track, I was totally blown away by the rest of this album.

The title track alone is what forever etched Anggun into my memory cells but my world was virtually turned upside down by the other tracks on this album.

5 out of 5 stars Impartial but accurate.......2002-12-29

I love anggun
she has, with her music, made me fall in love with her music and what her voice evokes in me. this is the kind of music i want to hear all the time i can honestly say this is one of my all time favorite cd's there are songs on this cd if done by a lesser artist(at least in my opinion) would [not be the same] but her voice can salvage these unfortunate songs.I can't sing enough praises for her just hoping she gets the exposure she deserves so she can be around for a long time to make music for me,that's right for me...I am selfishly a devoted fan who is impartial to good music choice tracks:
snow on the sahara
rose in the wind
on the breath of an angel
memory of tour shores
by the moon
life on mars
valparaiso

all of them!

5 out of 5 stars ANGGUN'S DEBUT: TITLES, RELEASES & CONTENTS.......2001-08-17

Anggun's international debut album comes in several album titles and release versions, with some differences in contents. A run down: [...]

FRENCH: #(F1). AU NOM DE LA LUNE, French release (France), 16 tracks (11 songs + 5 fillers). #(F2). AU NOM DE LA LUNE, French international release (la Francophonie), 16 tracks (11 songs + 5 fillers). #(F3). ANGGUN, French international release, 16 tracks (11 songs + 5 fillers), as currently listed in Sony Music's Pan European catalogue..... All 3 French version releases have exactly the same contents. They include La Memoire des Rochers (original song of Memory of Your Shores), and do not include Life on Mars. The French version (any of above 3 releases) is the original version. The poetical romanticism of the lyrics is at its most natural in French. Five tracks (Le Départ, Gita, Blanca, Pluies, Ceria) are not full songs but "fillers" (interludes, short music to bridge between songs). The effects of these fillers are tangible if you listen to this album from beginning to end. They make the transition between songs better, they add to the overall color of this rich album, and they make the album more well-rounded.

ENGLISH - REGULAR: #(E1). ANGGUN, international release, 16 tracks (12 songs + 4 fillers). #(E2). SNOW ON THE SAHARA, international release, 16 tracks (12 songs + 4 fillers)..... These 2 versions have exactly the same contents. They contain the same track-set as the French version (Memory of Your Shores and fillers included), except that ending-filler Ceria is omitted and song Life on Mars added.

ENGLISH - 'DIFFERENT': #(E3). ANGGUN, Indonesian/Malaysian release, 16 tracks (12 songs + 4 fillers)..... Same as (E1/E2), except By the Moon is sung in French (titled Au Nom De La Lune), and A Rose in the Wind is sung in Indonesian/Malay (titled Kembali).

ENGLISH - 'FAT': #(E4). ANGGUN, Japanese release, 19 tracks (15 songs + 4 fillers)..... Contains all the tracks in (E1/E2) plus 3 additions: French versions of 3 of the songs. Thus there are 3 double songs here, in English and French -- Snow On The Sahara/La Neige au Sahara, A Rose in the Wind/La Rose des Vents, Dream of Me/De Soleil et d'Ombres. (Note: if I get it correctly, previously Sony Music Japan also marketed a 16 track version titled "Anggun.")

ENGLISH - 'SLIM': #(E5). SNOW ON THE SAHARA, US release, 11 tracks (11 songs, no fillers except Blanca which becomes part of the song Valparaiso here)..... Contains 11 out of the 12 songs in (E1/E2), Memory of Your Shores is omitted. If you're in the US, this one costs the least -- but also contains the least.

The only song on this CD that matters is "LUST." Rick Springfield was crazy to not release it.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Collaboration between three great artists!!!.......2004-02-19

I had heard so much about this CD from many different people that I just couldn't wait to get it. At first listen I though it sounded a bit dated. However the more I listened to it, the more I loved it! Some of the ly"Rick"s on this CD provide some of the most erotic imagery of Rick's songwriting career! This is a great CD to pop in the car and drive to.

1 out of 5 stars Sounds Like Bad Music from 1985.......2003-03-13

I have been a huge Rick Springfield fan since the early 80s. I have religeously purchased each of his CDs... with the exception of one - Sahara Snow. Well, I recently came across the CD online and decided to purchase it. What a mistake! As big of a Rick fan as I am, the album outright .... Although it was released 1997, it sounds like music straight from 1985. The kind of 1985 music that has not withstood the test of time.

Rick, I love you man, but promise me that you will never work with Bob Marlette and Tim Pierce again.

P.S. I'll be purchasing the new album the day it hits stores. Karma was excellent... so I know Rick still has a lot of great music in him.

5 out of 5 stars One of Springfield's best.......2002-11-16

This cd has a bit more of the rock side of Springfield. His fans know that live he smokes, but is usually fairly restrained in the studio. Well, this is a good balance, and one of his best cd's ever.

I first heard Anggun's voice on a CD a friend made for me. It left me absolutely mesmerized. The emotion in her voice brings each song to life. Sensual yet pure, Anggun Cipta Sasmi is a rare gift to the music world. She plunges into every song, taking the listener with her into a journey of her very soul. Her voice is powerful and graceful. The strength of her presence in each song penetrates through the music, and offers a glimpse into the ancient and refined culture of the Javanese. Anggun's first album leaves us in anticipation for further releases.
