About the Artist
The Pocket Furys are a Dayton, Ohio based band primed for take-off. Primarily touring in the midwest, this band has built a loyal following with it's straight forward, danceable, guitar pop. Vocalist Tom Weir delivers his infectious melodies in a unique style somewhere in between Billy Corgan and Peter Gabriel. The foundation for this band is it's "in-the-pocket" rhythm section. But in the end it all comes back to the hooks that keep you dancing as well as singing.

Product Description
Get to the point pop with tooth-ache hooks. Solid guitar based pop songs that stay with you.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Recording.......2007-07-18

This is an excellent recording. I was dying to listen to L'homme et son desir. I have an old copy of it which I absolutely love---a recording from the 1960s, performed by the Utah Symphony Orchestra (Maurice Abravanel). Unfortunately, I didn't have the album with me, hence my buying this CD. I was not disappointed.

Get some good speakers and don't be afraid to turn up the volume!

5 out of 5 stars Duplicate If You Must--This CD Is for Every Fan of Milhaud.......2005-12-23

Here we have three of Milhaud's greatest hits and one that should be, all in performances that are as fine as any I've heard. "La Creation" gets a really all-stops-pulled-out reading, with the Lille musicians tossing around more hot licks than I've heard except perhaps on Bernstein's old EMI recording. Just about any French conductor should be able to turn in a lively rendition of "Le Boeuf," yet this one sparkles in a very special way. And I like Casadesus' "Suite provencale" even more than Charles Munch's (on RCA), which I thought was just about perfect.

One thing that the current recording has going for it is just about the best sound that's ever been accorded these popular works. Maybe it's the venue, the Auditorium du Noveau Siecle in Lille, or maybe it's Mike Clements, one of today's finest sound engineers. Maybe it's a special kind of synergy. Anyhow, this is a fabulous-sounding disc.

Finally, there is "L'homme et son desir." I don't know whether to call this a poor-man's "Les Noces" (Stravinsky) or a rich-man's "Ballet Mechanique" (Antheil), but whatever, it is one of Milhaud's most unusual and beguiling creations, replete with a weird vocalise for four soloists and huge percussion section featuring a whip and a police whistle! The piece is available in what might be a considered a definitive performance by the composer himself, except this one from Casadesus is every bit as good, if not a little livelier, and of course it is in up-to-the-minute sound. So as I say, even if you'll be getting your third (or fourth) version of "La Creation du monde," don't miss this very special CD.

5 out of 5 stars A Varied Collection of Modern French Classical Music.......2005-10-05

Composer Darius Milhaud's music is not always easy to describe. He is influenced by the legacy of classical composers from his native France which forms the basic framework of his music. He was also influenced by trends in classical music by other composers who were his contemporaries as well as by the jazz movement. Some of his music also has a Latin/Brazilian feel to it which means that you're never quite sure oaf what you'll hear when it comes to Milhaud's music but one thing is certain, it may be a bit challenging but it will be enjoyable.

This disc from Naxos contains four pieces from the Milhaud catalogue. The first piece is "La Creation du Monde" which the liner notes states is Milhaud's best known work though I would believe that at least to American audiences, the familiar Brazilian strains of "Le Boeuf sur le Toit" would have that distinction. "La Creation" is a combination of French classical and jazz and was originally a ballet. "Le Boeuf" has a Brazilian and jazz feel to it and was originally written as a background piece for a silent film. "Suite Provencale" would be the most traditional work of the set and his "L'Homme et son Desir" would for orchestra and wordless voices would be his most experimental.

The Orchestre National de Lille seems at home with Milhaud's music. They accept the challenges posed by pieces such as "La Creation" and "L'Homme,' play "Suite Provencale" in a robust manner and have fun with "La Boeuf." Conductor Jean-Claude Casadesus seems to not gusty be familiar with the scores but as respect for the composer as well as his interpretations show. Naxos also has to be credited for providing a disc of not so familiar music so that listeners can get to know the music of an important 20th century composer.

5 out of 5 stars Love this CD.......2004-02-08

I discovered it on my yahoo radio, and had been looking for it for over a year...as far as I know, it was never released for air play in the United States. Luckily, Itunes had it, and I've been listening to it for weeks in the car. Love it. If you liked New Order back in their heyday, you'll probably like this CD.

5 out of 5 stars not a bis fan, but...........2003-02-05

I must admit, I was not a fan of bis. I'd only heard a few songs of theirs before, and they were ok, but nothing I wanted to get into. But then I heard the remix of the End Starts Today on a compilation of 80's/electro, which led to me borrowing a copy of Plastique Nouveau, and now it is one of my favorite CDs. So, I hate to contradict the previous reviewer, but in my opinion, even if you didn't like bis before, or you didn't know their music, you will love this cd.

4 out of 5 stars As usual, a collection of remixes..........2002-09-09

...loaded with stupid songs that used to be good. Of the 4 remixes on the disc, only the "End Starts Today" remix is really worth listening to, and even then it isn't really all that great.
Still, the edit of "The End Starts Today" and the 4 original songs "Sound of Sleet," "Don't Let the Rain come down," "Make it Through," and "Brainclouds" are all great, and definitely shows a much more mellow, simple side of the usual sonic [stuff] that I have grown used to on Bis recordings. I was particularly impressed by "Make it Through," which has the strangest arrangements and lyrics I've heard in a while ("I should know I'm a medical doctor and I probably should've known"), and "Don't Let the Rain Come Down" is just plain catchy.
So, should you buy it or not? Well, if you are a Bis fan like me, then by all means, get it. Otherwise, don't. There are too many mellow songs and retarded remixes to waste your time on.

4 out of 5 stars John "Biscuits" Harrison rips on drums.......2001-01-22

This group should be every band's inspiration. Not only can they make an amazing album, the drummer can eat an entire garbage bag full of movie popcorn. John Harrison is my god.

      5 out of 5 stars I was surprised!.......2000-04-28

I got it from one of my friends at a used record store as a sample and it sat on my shelf for 6 mos. without being played. one night while i was looking for something different and decent to play, while i had in mind what it was, i started looking thru some CDs i hadn't listened to yet, and found the "Comas" CD it was just what i was looking for. Im glad i found this album, but i am saddened because there are no other albums of theirs available. It is a very cool creative effort and it is one of the better alternative albums i got my hands on. Thanks. Please make another album.

5 out of 5 stars wettest songs on the face of this dry planet.......2000-01-21

damn fine music! what the hell is the "chapel hill sound" anyway? who knows, who cares, the comas are the best band to pop out of anywhere in the past 3 years, period.

this album is stuffed between all my quasi, elliott smith, and built to spill stuff if that tells you anything!

4 out of 5 stars Pretty stoner pop music!.......1999-11-23

Buy this record so this excellent band from Chapel Hill can afford to tour and come play for you. Sounds like the first Breeders record meets the Beatles meets the Flaming Lips, with lots of harmony between a gruffish male singer and a pretty female singer. Great, great, great. Stop reading this review and buy the damn record.

4 out of 5 stars title of review.......2003-06-29

I bought this cd for full price having never heard anything more than 30 second samples of the songs on it, a pretty rare thing for me, but such is my faith in Trunk Federation, and my need to hear more of their music. The opening song, Hey Suitcase, is really excellent. Another highlight is track three, Load Up The Jetset, which almost sounds like novelty circus music or something, it seems just too goofy, like it shouldn't work, but it does end up being a really cool rockin song. The rest of the songs are all pretty low key, I was disappointed with them at first, but after a few listens my familiarity with them grew, and I'd consider this to be a cd I could happily listen to from start to finish. I don't think this album is quite as good as their last one, The Curse Of Miss Kitty, though. I don't even know if they're together anymore, this is their last album and it came out in 2000, and their website hasn't been updated since then. I'm sure tragically few people have bought this album, but Trunk Federation have really made some uniquely charismatic and invigorating music that deserves more acknowledgement.

3 out of 5 stars See these guys live.......2000-07-06

If you ever see these guys listed in your area, go see them. Their live show is excellent. They join a group of AZ bands such as Calexico that are terribly underappreciated by their local scenes (I think Calexico is more popular in Dresden than they are in Tucson...) - so you will see a very talented live band most likely with a small crowd at a low ticket price. If you are fortunate enough to have seen Trunk Federation live, you may be slightly dissappointed with this CD. It's somewhat de-energized and ends up sounding a little too much like They Might be Giants by the time they finished in the studio. It's still a great record, especially the Jetset song.
