A new direction..but change is good.......2006-07-06

I would like to start by saying this is not the best Kenny Loggins record ever made contrary to some of the other reviews on here. With that said, this is a good record. Kenny's voice alone would get him 2 stars in my book.

This record was one of three or four records that marked a transition in Kenny's career from an 80's rocker to an introspective folk rocker. While this alblum is decidedly more mellow, the songs are full of purpose and life. Three of the songs can hold their own with any of Kenny's best. Conivction of The Heart, The Real Thing and Will of the Wind are standouts here. Leap of Faith the title track would deserve honarable mention. Those 4 songs are great and I'll argue with anyone who says otherwise.

Despite these instant classics, the record fails to sustain its energy and settles in to a lot of ballads which seem aimless. Kenny's voice is great and the other songs have some nice moments, but they are not the type of songs you are going to listen to over and over again. Conviction of the Heart seems so full of life and creative imagination as does the Real Thing, but the later tracks on the record are lacking with the possible exception of Now or Never which has a nice chorus.

Personally I miss the Kenny Loggins who brought us such hits as Nobody's Fool, I'm Alright, Playing with the Boys, Danger Zone, Meet Me Half Way and Footloose, but all great things must come to an end and if this is what we can expect in the future. I welcome it, because Kenny never disappoints. This is simply a new direction and Loggins will master (The Pooh Corner records offer proof of this) this new genre as well since he is a fine musician.

If you are a fan of Loggins, this is a must own record because a Loggins collection without the 3 or 4 standout songs on this record is an incomplete Loggins Library as far as I'm concerned.

If you are more of a casual Loggins fan, I would suggest picking up this record at a discounted price. The record is good, but not so great to make it worth a huge price.

Loggins is a genius.......2005-06-02

I was never a big fan of Loggins. But then a friend of mine recommended me to buy this album. Lo and behold, I become addicted to listening this album and later on I bought Loggins other albums. This album outstands and able to deliver messages about relationship (personal or not) in depth, well, at least I got the message clearly. I'm very much impressed with Loggins. He's musically talented and yes, a genius. Can't argue more.

A Masterpiece ... A Gem ... A Must .......2005-05-19

It's not easy for a talented songwriter to let go of his chart-topping formula and take on a new direction, and most of those who got the courage to try ended up realizing that after all they weren't gifted enough to suceed.

But Kenny Loggins did it, and he did it well.

This album demonstrated the best in songwriting, arrangement, musicianship and recording.

At least I love it so much that I took the trouble and time to write something about the album ... while I'm busy listening to it ...

Loggins' masterpiece!.......2005-03-19

There are no words to describe the beauty and power of Loggin's 1990 masterpiece "Leap of Faith". Worlds superior to his movie-themed 1980s hits, this album finds a far more mature and sophisticated Kenny at his artistic pinnacle with an unrivalled masterpiece. "Conviction of The Heart" is mind-blowing classic and the closing track "Too Early" is heavenly. Highly recommended.

Personally, I think this is Kenny's best work. Every song on the album is amazing. I give this a 10/10!!!!

You'll find your faith again............2004-12-10

The movie was outstanding, the soundtrack just as good. Steve Martin stars as a burned-out charlatan evangelist who comes to a town that hasn't had rain in a long time. Martin finds his own faith throught the course of the plot. You'll find yours just listening to the soundtrack. The CD opens up with Don Henley's "You better sit down" which surprisingly made the charts. Patti Labelle and Edwin Hawkin's "Are you ready for a Miracle" was probably the most stunning piece of the whole album, but all the music is upbeat and heartening. One minus was the instrumental music was not included.

Disappointing, but contains some gems.......2004-10-31

Disappointing, mostly because this CD contains different (and inferior) versions of many of the songs in the movie. Nevertheless, it contains a couple of gems. In particular, the Patti Labelle version of "Are You Ready for a Miracle" is so powerful that one listen could make Osama fall on his knees and praise Jesus.

The Incidental Music Is Not On This CD.......2004-03-21

Like the other reviewer of March 2000, I was hoping that the exceedingly beautiful background music would be included, but it wasn't and I don't know why. Not everyone loves Gospel. I am not religious, and I'll listen to Gospel music in a movie, but I certainly won't listen to it on purpose!

The best music in this movie which I watched a dozen times just to hear it is near the end when the rains finally come to the parched, drought-forever town. It simply gives you goose pimples. This CD is like the score to "The Horse Whisperer", if you're not careful (like me) you ended up with nothing but country singing, not knowing there was a 2nd CD made with Thomas Newman's spectacular score! The producers of movie score CD's should know there's two types of customers: those who like songs and others who like just the instrumental background music. They lose the latter market if they don't pay attention.

Never thought I would like Gospel music!.......2003-12-13

Great Gospel Soundtrack.......2003-04-08

This is a rare occasion that Hollywood would put out a movie with a great gospel soundtrack. If you haven't seen the film, you're missing out on a special treat. It's about a man who loses faith and finds it again. Hollywood has the ability to make good films, but they only come around once in a while. I believe that any old-fashioned Christian will really enjoy this soundtrack. It's the best fun you can have of this quality. It's quality comes from the talent of Cliff Eidelman who composes works for 'Alien Trilogy,' 'Free Willy 3,' 'Star Trek VI,' 'A Simple Twist of Fate,' and 'My Girl 2.'

'Change in My Life' sung by John Pagano, has been recorded by artists "Rockapella." You remember the Maxwell House guys from their album, 'Don't Tell Me You Do.' An uplifting song that will bring joy and hope to the broken hearted. It's soulful melody and smooth rhythms will rock you away to Heaven. Meat Loaf who stars in the movie and sings 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light.' Others to compliment the album are the talents of Don Henley (The Eagles), Patti LaBelle, in her best guest appearance and Wynnona Judd. Rounding it out is Jazz scene's own George Duke. And, Black Gospel's top lady Albertina Walker singing 'Blessed Assurance.' The most exciting of the film at the end when the rains come and the people are celebrating. It just puts the Holy Spirit all through you. Cliff Eidelman does a great job of putting this soundtrack together. You can check out more of his work in, 'Now and Then' and 'One True Thing.' If you like more of great gospel music done by top artists may I suggest 'The Apostle-[Sountrack]' from the film starring Robert Duvall. I just know you'll be changed after hearing this.

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Still sounds as great as when it was first released.......2007-07-17

I simply love every song on this album. I was hooked on the CD when it was released 5 years ago, and I recently got hooked on the songs again. Some of my favorites; "Take You There", "Sympathy", "If I Don't Tell You Soon" and "Teach Me How To Love". The title track is indeed a great song, but the CD offers so much more. Looking forward to his new CD, although it seems delayed again.

Sorry, but this album is just too weak. I mean, David's good looks have always been a part of his success, but that doesn't give him the right to deliver a meaningless pop/rock album full of numb tracks that noone remembers. The singles "Leap Of Faith" & "Teach Me" are OK, but the entire album relies on them, and the songs get worse as the CD runs. You don't realize when it has ended. If you can get over the Charvet-fascination, you'll see this is NOT A REALLY GOOD ALBUM.

A relatively unknown soldier from the Big Beat wars of 1999, Cuba's Leap of Faith is an excellent representative of both the best and worst that the much-maligned genre had to offer. Thin, watery audio collages like "King of Kelly" and "Hail Mary" are nothing more than album filler, while the corny, horn-y "Havana" looks around for the EMF album it belongs to. On the plus side, the bluesy, almost Led Zeppelinish "Foxy's Den" gets the dance-groove, rock-swagger recipe just right, and the optimistic rap over a telegraphing guitar squall in "Cross the Line" is as furiously catchy as it is predictable. Ironically enough, the track that least seems to belong here, the sunny, wistful "Winter Hill" (with guest vocals from Mojave 3's Rachel Goswell), is the key reason to pick up this record. --Bob Michaels

Flowing effortlessly from one track to the other "Leap of Faith" will keep your foot tapping during the entire duration of the album as well as uncover layered textures with each listen. Fans of Whale, Hooverphonic and Urban Dance Squad will not be disappointed by the solid debut of Cuba's "Leap of Faith". One of the best debut releases of 1999.

I LIKES THIS!!!.......1999-10-23

Purchased the cd to further investigate one of the Earthling posse. It had all the factors which one needs to put the hand in the pocket. 4ad, an earthling, and a band name such as it is and also a rockin' cuban flag on the inlay sleve. Have listened to it a number of times. I must say that what I am feeling now is not what I felt initially. It is one of those prized cd's that work there way from the hidden depths of your collection to the rockin' front . Am delighted with the purchase and shall certainly push it amongst my mates. It is a soothing mixture of atmospheric music, rock n' roll and the occasional smile on the listeners face. Thumbs up y viva la revolucion.

Shooting Star Continue To Deliver The Goods.......2003-06-30

LEAP OF FAITH: LET'S ROLL is yet another great album from the underrated Kansas City band Shooting Star. The song "Let's Roll" was inspired by the last words of a passenger on the doomed flight on 9/11, but the lines "I'd rather put up a fight than to lose control" and "I'd rather go down in flames than to lose my soul" are also my statements of intent not to get conned into buying music by artists whose views I do not feel are right, as well as inspiring me not to go into a situation that is not good for me. This album shows that Shooting Star should have gotten more recognition as an important link between Head East, Bob Seger, Loverboy, and the Outlaws.

Leaping for the Stars!.......2002-09-26

I bought Shooting Star's previous CD "It's not over" in a cut out bin several years ago and was totally blown away by the emotion in Keith Mitchell's voice. These guys are great and deserve to be re-recognized. This album is a re-issue with the new song Let's Roll inspired by the 9/11 tragedy and the now infamous last words of Tom Beamer who was a passenger on the plane that went down in Penn. Shooting Star is giving a dollar from every CD they sell to his foundation. If you like great hard Rock in the style of foreigner, survivor, Bon-Jovi then you'll love this album and several of their older releases. "Call it Love", and "Leap of Faith" are just fantastic pieces of song writing filled with emotion and delivered with nothing but talent and desire. Buy this album now.

Lester Bowie died between the time this album was recorded and released, but the Art Ensemble of Chicago legend seems to live on in Dave Douglas, another trumpeter with irreverence for the solemnity of high art and the walls between musical genres. Leading this quartet (with saxophonist Chris Potter, bassist James Genus, and drummer Ben Perowsky), Douglas displays the sometimes comic, sometimes angry, sometimes dissonant, sometimes singing, sometimes playful, sometimes elegant quality that Bowie perfected. Douglas's 11 compositions all contain a juicy melodic nugget, but surprisingly it's when his trumpet and Potter's tenor sax stretch the harmonies into the most unorthodox intervals that the tunes are most beautiful. The staggered, stop-and-go rhythms often seem on the verge of stumbling, but they never lose their momentum and sustain a delicious taste of tension throughout the disc. --Geoffrey Himes

A great follow-up to "Magic Triangle". Compositions are strong and performances are flawless. Drummer Ben Perowsky really stands out on this recording. Dave Douglas continues to amaze as both a performer and a composer.

Solid.......2000-08-18

This is a solid set. The compositions are very good and the playing is basically flawless. In comparison to Douglas' other work its lacking a special spark. I tend to respond to Douglas' stranger instrumental line -ups (Tiny Bell, Charms and the String Group). If your looking for straightahead mainstream jazz which approaches the margins this (along with SOul on Soul and MAgic Triangle) is a must buy.

Another Douglas highlight!.......2000-03-17

This recording from Dave Douglas is a major event. Leap of Faith finds the quartet in remarkable form. Evidently recorded after an extensive tour, the band are completely at ease with each other, caught at a moment of intense creativity. Dave and Chris Potter are developing such a rapport that there are moments here that are truly incredible. I know some people find the lack of a chordal instrument, and the resultant fractured harmonies difficult at times but music happens in the space between the notes and this is beautiful music. (If yow want to hear how a trumpet and drum duet can SOUND like a whole orchetra, listen to Dave's record with Han Bennink). James Genus and Ben Perowsky are great (Ben's trio with Chris Speed and Scott Colley is a must buy). Dave Douglas is building a body of work which is unmatched in contemporary music for its breadth and creative focus. Buy this, and together with "Soul on soul" you have two of the most important recordings of the year so far.

Declaring herself "a cabaret virgin," Faith Prince presents her first solo show, recorded live at Joe's Pub in New York in January 2000. You'd never know it from this vastly entertaining recording that combines terrific song selection with a lot of fun patter. Best known for her Tony-winning portrayal of the ditzy Miss Adelaide in Guys and Dolls, Prince covers that sort of comedy and more in this career retrospective: "On the Other Side of the Tracks" from Little Me, Mary Rodgers and Stephen Sondheim's bossa nova spoof "The Boy From..." from Hey, Love, and On a Clear Day's "What Did I Have That I Don't Have," a less charged but no less effective rendition than Liza Minnelli's recorded a week earlier at the Palace. Other highlights include "The Man with a Horn," which incorporates an anecdote of how Prince met her trumpet-playing husband (who provides a solo here), and a rendition of "Something Wonderful" as Miss Adelaide herself would sing it. When the familiar screwball voice starts to intone the Rodgers and Hammerstein standard, the audience can't help laughing, but the combination of lyric and character soon becomes surprisingly poignant. A Leap of Faith is recommended for Faith Prince fans as well as anyone who wants to become one. --David Horiuchi

BUY IT!!!.......2005-07-19

I came across this CD about five years ago totally by accident, a friend left it at my house and then left town - and boy am I glad that she did! I wasn't really very familiar with Faith Prince before I popped this disc in - but I was a life long fan by the time it was over. This recording takes you into Joe's Pub and provides an hour or more of witty stories, broadway standards, as well as a few rare jems that I had never heard before. If you appreciate a good evening of song and lore then you will love this album. Ms. Prince shines, both her wit and her voice. You won't be sorry.

HAVE FAITH. A BETTER PRINCE WILL COME ALONG........2003-01-01

We like Faith Prince. We really do. But we don't love this debut recording, recorded live at Madhattan's Joe's Pub, where the sound quality leaves something to be desired and Prince's decision to present a mock autobiography leaves us wanting something more substantial. Sure, her self-deprecating wit and laid-back style is in full bloom, but the anecdotes are tasteless and benign and, frankly, a waste of good recording time. Please someone, why not simply put her in a studio with selections from the Great American Songbook and let her loose? Even Miss Adelaide would no longer lament.

Gorgeous, and her voice ain't bad either.......2002-08-29

If you can't see Faith Prince in person, and everyone should, this CD is the next best thing. Her personality, charm and ever-present wit only make you love her voice more and you get it all in this package. Her bit on Elaine Strich made me laugh my head off and her cell phone call to her son is really cute. I try to separate my love for this woman's talent from what others may simply hear in her voice, but I can't. Faith is one of this country's great talents - you're going to love this woman and her music!

Delightfully Fun Faith Prince CD........2002-01-05

A Leap Of Faith is one of Faith Prince's best recordings. This basically features a list of many songs from various Broadway shows, in which she kicks them up a notch to her extremly unique and funny personality. Faith Prince sounds great...her voice is smooth, and many of the lyrics to the songs in here, although not written by her, are some of the most excellent songs I've listened to in many many years.

This is a great CD. Faith is also so funny and you will love all her stories. "What good is sitting all anown in your room come hear" Faith Prince sing "Cabert!" This is a CD for all people who love Broadway!

Christian folk-rock excellance!.......1998-08-21

Passion and excellance abound on this CD. From the start you're aware that Leap of Faith is a rare cut. While the comparison to James Taylor is unavoidable, Jim Cole is no JT wanna be. Jim Cole lays down track after track of great songs, superbly performed, tremendously appealing to lovers of great acuoustic guitar and song, but moreover provocative in their manifestation of real faith. It's soon obvious that Jim Cole is gifted. The songs range from merely beautiful to hard cut passionate statements of faith. If you like excellent acoustic folk-rock that speaks of more than just "feelin good" but touches on your soul...get this CD.

Put Jim up there with Keaggy, King, and Dente.......1998-06-18

Among the great acoustical guitarists on the Christian scene today is Jim Cole.

When you hear him, don't be put off by the vocal and guitar similarities with James Taylor. You will at times hear both on Jim's albums. But Jim moves beyond JT in ways and establishes himself as a truly gifted songwriter and musician.

Whereas the songwriting and arrangements on "Merciful God" (the previous album) seemed a bit simpler, the songs here are rich, both lyrically and musically. Jim's style will remind you musically of the early James Taylor, and lyrically of the early Bob Bennet (another great Christian guitarist and songwriter). The songwriting here is made stronger by the cowriting of Kelly Willard (on two songs) and the cover of an old Mark Heard song, "Castaway".

All of the songs have strong, straightforward Christian content. Some of the songs focus on the Lord: "Shepherd of All Who Wander", the beautiful hymn "Be Thou My Vision", "Deep As the Ocean Blue" and "He Leads Us On" (a duit with Kelly Willard). Others deal with how God is the answer for lifes challenges: "Let Us Be One", "Castaway", "Remedy for This", and the title cut "Leap of Faith". We even get to hear a bit of humor on "Simple Song".

Among my favorites is "Remedy for This" where Jim sings: "Remedy for this/solution for that/Voices and choices between fiction and fact/So much talk about cures but I've only found one/Down on my knees before His crucified Son."

Though not well known, Jim deserves to be considered with the great guitarists of our day. You won't be disappointed by his mellow sound, excellent guitar work, solid arrangements, and straightforward and uplifting lyrics. Like JT did on his early efforts, Jim's music becomes richer and deeper with each new installment. I can't wait for the next one.
