Monsoon Wedding is Mychael Danna's second collaboration with film director Mira Nair, (Kama Sutra was the first), and he has again compiled a winning soundtrack. Danna explores a wide range of emotions, from solemn to celebratory, through different generations of Indian culture. The contemplative "Good Indian Girls" and "Hold Me, I'm Falling" feature Danna's trademark piano ambience over traditional Indian instrumentation, and the vivacious "Baraat" sounds like a Punjabi variation on Dixieland, while "Delhi.com" ventures into dreamy ethno-techno territory. Sukhwinder Singh's "Today My Heart Desires" serves up lively bhangra rock, and Laxmikant Pyarelal's "Today the Weather Plays Tricks on Me" (performed by Mohammed Rafi) swoons with strings and male vocals. I just saw the movie MONSOON WEDDING and I absolutely loved it! Of course, I just HAD to have the soundtrack, so I bought the Cd recently and loved it too! WOW!

The Cd will leave you in a happy mood... Wonderful up-beat songs, many are so danceable and hipnotic. I've been playing this Cd all week ...I just wish it were longer because I would love to have more Cds like this in my Cd collection.

This is an excellent soundtrack from an excellent movie. The music is fantastic - makes you want get up and move your feet! It's got such a happy, wistful, exotic flavor throughout the CD. I think this will probably be one that I wear out from listening to it so much!

I just love this CD. I'm preferential to the work of Mychael Danna and this is another awesome work of his. There is everything from old Indian love ballads to the popular Bollywood music of today, with some very beautiful instrumentals in between.

I'd recommend seeing the movie too. As well, I'd check out Danna's music for another Mira Nair movie, "Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love."

Above I listed some words that first came to mind when I thought about this cd.
It is very Culture rich and soaked in Indian flavor. It's colorful and makes you happy with a laugh or two; as it seeks to portray the traditional music typical of a Punjabi wedding in Delhi, India.
You want to dance with most songs and sit quietly to reflect with others. I listed appreciate because we often don't sit back to appreciate the richness that other cultures provide. My 2 year old appreciates this music in her broken wanna be Hindi mimic.
She dances as does my 6 year old to this music. It's really a great CD but I would recommend seeing the movie first.

What are legends if not for reinventing -- and/or hyper-inflating into Hollywood summer fare? In retooling the Arthurian legend for the goth-beguiled video game age, mega-producer Jerry Bruckheimer did away with details small (the lady in the lake, sword in the stone, etc.) and large (this Arthur is actually Eastern European, by way of Rome). Composer Hans Zimmer picks up that gauntlet, producing an orchestral score bristling with massed brass, chorus and percussion -- if little of the indigenous mysticism that made his work on Gladiator/ so rewarding. What there is of that precious commodity is frontloaded via the song "Tell Me Know (What You See)," his evocative opening collaboration with Clannad's Moya Brennan. From there, Zimmer emphasized this version's Eastern conceits with a half-dozen suites of cues that thunder in the Russian classical tradition -- and all the melodic range of "Jingle Bells." Zimmer--not to mention Poledouris--has done it better, but fans of outsized orchestral Gothic moodfests may yet take this one to heart. --Jerry McCulley

I'm a huge Hans Zimmer fan, his scores are rich and deep. This is not his best, but it's still a great listen.

Want to hear Gladiator II?.......2007-04-12

In the end, this is the only relevant question; do you want to hear a more melodramatic version of Gladiator? More melodramatic, you ask?
And you better believe it, Hans Zimmer actually managed to blow up his sound from Gladiator even more, and I really didn't think this was possible, mainly because I thought it would sound utterly pathetic and over the top. And make no mistake, Zimmer's King Arthur is just that.

I am reviewing this score in retrospect, and it is truly fascinating to do that. When you look at other composers and make a little journey to their past, you usually find more creativity. The further back you go, the more original and fresh music you find. With Hans Zimmer, it's the opposite. With each year you go back, his scores just get more dreary, and that's saying alot because his latest works also don't really qualify as schoolbook examples for colourful scoring.

From Gladiator to Pirates Of The Caribbean 2, Hans Zimmer has yet to come forth with a truly fresh and unique score. Zimmer never, ever, not in a million years, escapes his usual box. And King Arthur is no exception whatsoever. From the get go, 20 horns are amassed and play a overly simplistic motif somewhere between a and A, the strings mush together in midrange, melodramatic chords, and dwell in the shallow realm of overbearing dullness.
I don't understand how an artist - and the art of film composing is severely underrated - can be content with repeating the same thing over and over. If I were Hans Zimmer, I would be embarassed by now to even write one more note for that droning bass.
To top it all off, Zimmer incorporates an Enyaesque voice that is easy on the ears, but in the end signifies nothing, does nothing and does all that with an amazing lack of substance.

That is, amongst others, the major difference between a serious film composer and Hans Zimmer: a good and skillful film composer takes an average film like King Arthur and makes it sound like something worthwhile. Hans Zimmer on the other hand embraces mediocrity and underlines it to create an even more average film.

I recently purchased this particular soundtrack, and i would have to say it is awesome. Hans Zimmer is a master at what he does. The music suits the film and since I loved the film I had to get the soundtrack. I loved the song Tell Me Now by Moya Brennan, and Another Brick in Hadrians Wall is the best song im my opinion on the soundtrack. Overall I'm so glad I bought this soundtrack and I rate it up there with the likes of Gladiator, Pirates of the Carribean. Keep up the good work Hans

Hans' Best.......2007-03-12

Hans Zimmer is a film composer with dozens and dozens of scores under his belt. Many who do not collect or even listen to film scores know his name. However, much if his film music sounds very similar and lacks a complex edge that other compose like John Williams, James Horner, and James Newton Howard deliver.

That said, King Arthur is Hans' most intriguing score to date. Backdraft and Gladiator (overrated) were very good, but this score is a departure from Hans' usual motifs. The only bad part for me(not related to the music itself) is that there are only seven tracks and each are very long. I like shorter tracks so I can pinpoint the themes or variations I want to lsiten to, but this is extremely minor. The music is great, and I reccommend you go enjoy Hans' best music yet.

Great first album by one of the world's greatest rock bands.......2007-02-17

There are overhyped bands and then there are underhyped bands, bands that receive scads of unfair and inaccurate criticism. The Hold Steady definitely falls into the latter category. I find it astonishing that a number of people are willing to dismiss them. Rock critics, who are far more finely attuned to chicanery than average, everyday fans (as the dean of American rock critics, Robert Christgau, has pointed out, if you spend almost every one of your waking hours listening to music, you are going to be better at it than someone who spends only a few hours each week), do not detect the villainous flaws that the band's detractors do. In fact, their most recent album, BOYS AND GIRLS IN AMERICA, was voted by the 494 participating critics (definitely a who's who of writers about music) the Village Voice's 2006 Pazz and Jop Poll the #4 album of the year. Getting 494 top critics to agree about something is a pretty impressive feat.

So, it is utterly safe to ignore the people who dismiss The Hold Steady. The fact isn't that they "got" the band and dismissed it, but that they still haven't a clue. I will allow that some people just have trouble with Craig Finn's voice and perhaps his appearance. He looks today like in ten years he will have the archetypal appearance of a used car dealer. He absolutely does not look like the headliner of a great rock band. Furthermore, while it is hard to deny his amazing gifts as a lyricist, he doesn't sing. Instead, he declaims the lyrics of the song. Few people manage a completely unique "singing" style, but Finn definitely has. Myself, I absolutely love the guy. No, he doesn't sing, but his vocal style perfectly suits the band's aesthetic. And I love the way his lyrics combine equally cynicism, humor, weariness, and more than a little self-deprecation.

So much attention attaches itself to Craig Finn that sometimes the rest of the band escapes notice. But this truly is a fantastic band from top to bottom. Finn might be the most dominating frontman in America today, but Tad Kubler is one of America's greatest guitarists. Indeed, he may have been born outside his time. He is one of the few guitarists around capable of foisting a song onto his back and dominating it for long stretches of time. He would be a legend had he lived in the seventies instead of today, had he lived when long, eight-minute guitar solos were not only acceptable but in demand. Anyone doubting his ability should listen to the second have of "Everyone's a DJ." The ghosts of Leslie West, Alvin Lee, and Ted Nugent haunt every measure. If Craig Finn gives the band most of its identity, Kubler gives it its musical backbone. Though they sound almost nothing like one another, a Finn-Kubler comparison to Jagger-Richards isn't misleading.

Although BOYS AND GIRLS IN AMERICA is The Hold Steady's break out album, I honestly think ALMOST KILLED ME remains their best album. But I say that with the caveat that all three of their albums fall into the "must own" category. No band on planet earth has produced three such perfect albums in the past three years.

Other reviewers have praised "The Swish," which truly is one of the great rock songs of recent years. I actually like "Everyone's a DJ" even more, mainly because of Kubler's long guitar solo. But for brilliant, funny, clever lyrics it is hard to beat "Knuckles." Every single song, however, is infused with great lyrical content, Finn's passionate declamation of the words, and one of the tightest bands in the world pounding out great music. If you love music, you need this album. They do remind you of some of the great bands of the past, though interestingly of bands that normally you do not think of at the same time. What other band sounds like Bruce Springsteen, Thin Lizzy, and the Replacements all at the same time, while also sounding completely unlike them all?

While all three of the Hold Steady's albums should be in the musical library of any music fan, I also encourage more serious collectors to go in search of two albums by the Minneapolis band Lifter Puller, FIESTAS AND FIASCOS and the compilation album SOFT ROCK, which includes virtually everything else Lifter Puller recorded. The reason this is relevant is that the frontman for that band was Craig Finn and the lead guitarist was Tad Kubler. The sound is different from the Hold Steady, but the music is of the same high quality.

One of the best rock albums of 2004........2007-01-29

If you like power chords and clever, intelligent lyrics, this CD is for you. "The Swish" is in the running for rock song of the decade, and the rest of the album is solid. It manages to be completely original, and at the same time heartily celebrates its influences. Frontman Craig Finn doesn't sing as much as he rants, and in this way his delivery is somewhat similar to that of Joe Strummer.

I love this album. I adore it. I burnt a hole in it. It is not Separation Sunday, but Killer Parties and Most People are DJs are still 2 of my favorite Hold Steady songs.

Why, oh why, hasn't the license holder for Lifter Puller re-released those albums yet?

A little too raw.......2006-12-27

Let me first say that there are no exceptional songs on this album, perhaps with the exception of The Swish. The attitude of the album gives its strength. Another note is that the vocalist, well, doesnt exactly sing much at all. Throughout the album he has an attitude of attempting to bring back "the good old days" and a discontent with the current situation. He seems determined to party, drink, and have a good time. The bar rock side to this music can be easily heard but this gritty and dirty album can rock at times.

The first thing I heard from them was last year's fantastic "Separation Sunday" - which, although it was great, ended up just outside my top ten for the year.
And then this year, with "Boys & Girls in America" receiving all sorts of praise, and deserving the bulk of it, I managed to pick up a a copy of this, their first album, with only moderate expectations. See, I've heard from various publications (RS and P-fork) that their three-albums-in-three-years were a streak of solid discs reminiscent of Wire's three at the tail end of the 70s - and I'm a sucker for comparisons, so I had to go back to the beginning and hear this one to see if the name-dropping was apt.
And in this case it most definitely is.

"Almost Killed Me" is the kind of album that looks better now than it did when it first came out, I think. Like, given the benefit of hindsight, yeah - this was really great, but had I heard it at the time, I may have written it off as an interesting if ultimately unspectacular debut, which many people did (largely as a result of being turned off by Craig Finn's vocals) - and which is a shame. It's also why I'm glad I came to this album in the way that I did - with the benefit of hindsight.
Going back now and listening to this, with excellent album opener "Positive Jam" leading seamlessly into the rollicking "The Swish," it's clear that this is the genius band that now is the Hold Steady in chyrsalis, and that's a beautiful thing.

....and hard drugs are for bartenders, I think I might've mentioned that before...

I have listened to this album time and time again. I never tire of its beauty, its passion, and its inventiveness. It is one of the few albums I must always have on my MP3 player. It is a work of genius by a man who is brilliantly interpreting the genius of the Beatles. The recording quality is superb.

Interesting and surprising.......2006-06-11

I love this CD. It combines the best of both worlds--classical and rock. Paul McCartney said he took Bach pieces and made them into something new; for instance he used Bach chord progressions for his song "Jenny Wren," on his newest "Chaos and Creation" CD. Well, Bayless takes Beatles melodies and does great Bach-style things with them here. It is fun to hear Beatles done in the Baroque style, interestingly and flawlessly. Bayless is creative in his arrangements, AND he performs so well. This CD makes me smile. I betcha Bach and all four Beatles are smiling whenever its played.

As a professional classical musician (and erstwhile Beatles fan - my mother raised me listening to them at home in the late 70s) I have to commend this delightful album! The playing itself is fantastic, and the artistry and skill of John Bayless in imitating Bach is really amazing. It's just plain fun to listen to, but sounds like "real" classical music. I've bought this as a gift for many other musical colleagues, to rave reviews!

I like listening to experimental music, and thus I have a lot of respect for this album for what it attempts to accomplish. I had high expectations for this experiment because I am a huge fan of Bach and the Beatles. It's very hard to hear any Beatles influence during most of the album. Unless the money that you plan to spend on this album is disposable, I suggest that you consider spending some time listening to the samples before investing in this album.

Tuneful, but indistinct power pop.......2007-06-03

This modern William Tell cut his alt-rock teeth as rhythm guitarist for the Orange County bred Something Corporate. Just as the band was beginning to gain national traction, Tell bolted to pursue a solo career. Three years of writing and touring later, he's released a debut that leaves behind the punk and emo influences of his former band, and dives headlong into the world of power pop. Chime has replaced buzz, and angst has replaced moping and his melodic hooks are more anthemic than his former band's.

Producer Thom Panunzio (who also mixed) has added the layers of major label polish that he perfected on albums by Sheryl Crow, No Doubt, Tom Petty and others. The result is often more calculated than buffed, more form than substance, and though it hits all the right notes it failing to resonate emotionally. The history books say that William Tell was a Swiss national hero in the 15th century of debatable historical authenticity. What's much less debatable is that the Southern Cal pop artist with the identical moniker is unlikely to create nearly the same legend.



William Tell's new album "You Can Hold Me Down" was released on March 13th, by New Door Records. It is Tell's first solo effort after his work with the band Something Corporate. A generic pop album, Tell majors in catchy hooks and sing-along type tunes, intertwined with forgettable lyrics. There's nothing particularly second-rate about the album, just not much that's memorable. Highlights include the driving "Slipping Down," as Tell's energy provides a nice contrast from his sappier piano ballads. After a couple spin's Tell's bouncy choruses and feigned anxiety grow distinctly monotonous.



Not to say it's so bad you might want to fire an arrow at his head. But here's guessing you'll turn the stereo down.

I first heard William Tell at a concert in Allentown, from that night I knew I would love him. I found him on myspace and found out I could order his cd and get an autographed album art picture. I was so happy. I finally got the autograph. His voice is amazing. His lyrics are beautiful. My favorite song is "Like You, Only Sweeter" and "Young At Heart". I just don't know how to explain him, but I listen to his cd non-stop. I love him so so so much.

I am a fan of Savage Garden, The Eurythmics, and George Michael - all of them did a great job with and without Pavarotti....

And the man who sang O SOLE MIO - Darren Hayes (formerly of Savage Garden)... has the most beautiful- angelic- sultry and great voices I have ever heard - and to do it in Neapoliaton Italian (dialect) and in my opinion the best duet of ALL of them featured!!!!!

As always, Maestro Pavarotti's Modena concerts are highly entertaining and uplifting.
All artists sang two songs during the concert (one on their own and another with Maestro Pavarotti), but unfortunately not all of the songs are featured on this video. Another shortcoming is that there are no interviews or any extra footage.

It is funny to hear Pavarotti sing a pop tune as it is equally funny to see a pop singer with virtually no voice doing "O Sole Mio", but if it is all in good spirit and for charity, then it is enjoyable.

If you are intersted in European music scene or simply love Pavarotti, this tape will be a great treat for you.

Pavarotti's Best War Child Concert.......2002-01-04

Bravo showed this concert on New Years 2002 and it blew my mind. It is certainly the best of the War Child concerts, which started in 1996 as Pavarotti's effort to help the children of war-torn countries.
Like in the previous concerts, Pavarotti appears with international pop stars in the open-air piazza of his home town, Modena, Italy. (How do I get tickets for that?)
If you haven't heard any of these concerts, also available on CDs, you will be surprised how well Pavarotti's voice--a voice that makes the gods swoon--blends with the likes of Enrique Iglesias, George Michael, Tracy Chapman, and the Eurythmics. Previous concerts included B.B. King, Elton John, Ricky Martin, and Liza Minelli. Sometimes he sings along in English, sometimes in Italian counterpoint. The effect is stupdendous! These concerts display all the beauty of this great operatic voice while at the same time honoring the art of our greatest pop artists.
What makes this video the best is the children's chorus, the combined Ars Canto of Parmi, Italy, and the Children's Choir of Cambodia and Tibet. The video starts with this chorus joining Pavarotti and the totally sexy Enrique Iglesias in a rousing "Cielito Lindo."
Pavarotti really knows entertainment and in this one he pulls out all the stops! Best of all, part of the proceeds of this tape goes to benefit the children of Cambodia and Tibet. Pavarotti's efforts to help War Child have already built music centers for children in Kosovo, Liberia, and Guatemala. What great leadership!
He says on one of his jackets: "All too often, children are betrayed by the inhuman actions of adults, and become the innocent victims of war and cruelty. War Child is an energetic, and practical organization offering vital hope, working tirelessly for children to regain their rightful place in the world."

I am a HUGE Savage Garden fan so that was the main reason to buy this album. And I have to say Darren's voice is AWESOME in "O Sole Mio", the first time I listened to it it made me cry. So I bought the cd. I was glad to see that there are very enjoyable songs in the album not only the SG tracks. I loved Tracy Chapman's "Baby Can I Hold You Tonight" performance, now I am a Tracy fan too. You'll enjoy the performances by Aqua, Enrique Iglesias and Eurhytmics and of course the queen Tracy Chapman " ("Telling Stories" is superb!). I even discovered some new artists I had never heard of and I liked them. You won't be disappointed by this album.

A wonderfully enjoyable and diverse collection of music.......2000-11-05

This collection of music has given me great pleasure. Aqua's Around the World is a joy. Hearing the Eurythmics and Pavarotti perform together is fun and beautiful. I also especially liked Enrique Iglesias's Be with you. 20 tracks and 77 minutes of great music I will listen to again and again. And all for a good cause.

Tribute albums are always suspect; classical interpretations of rock even more so--and follow-ups to the same are fraught with mediocrity. Just witness the inexplicable glut of String Quartet Tribute discs to Tool, Bruce Springsteen, and many other top-selling and cult artists. On Hold Me to This, his second run at the music of art-rock group Radiohead, classical pianist Christopher O'Riley avoids all these pitfalls. These aren't easy-listening piano renditions of Radiohead tunes, but deeply inspired, often challenging and dissonant re-imaginings. O'Riley succeeds by taking the music on its own terms. He doesn't try to make it "classical" but lets the classical nature of the music ring out. From the storming chordal overtone clusters of "There There" to the Chopinesque refrain of "The Spinning Plates," O'Riley makes you forget these songs were originally played by a raging rock band. Instead, they seem born on the keys of his piano. His "Paranoid Android" is like Conlon Nancarrow going boogie-woogie one moment and painfully, sweetly rhapsodic the next. I'm not sure how Radiohead fans will respond to this, but piano and classical listeners should rejoice. --John Diliberto

I don't believe you need to be ga-ga over Radiohead to enjoy this CD. This CD, it's all piano (w/o vocals) if you didn't already know that going in, will provide an even deeper appreciation of the textures & depth of the Radiohead catalog. Mr. O'Riley does takes some artistic liberties with the songs, albeit minor, but in so doing he unleashes the potential they all have. And this potential is truly staggering---some selections are nothing short of gorgeous.
Hold me to this: you WILL be floored by this CD. it's well worth the purchase.

Oddly Boring.......2006-07-16

I adore Radiohead, and really enjoy solo piano. I should love this disc, but I don't. Even though the wonderful creepiness of Radiohead is completely absent, I would be willing to chalk that up to artistic interpretation. But that's not what bugs me about this disc. What really bugs me is his style of playing. He relies on resonance and the transcript is completely devoid of silence. The result is a droning wall of notes, and all the pieces sound the same. It reminds me of Windham Hill recordings, but without the expression. Get Yorke's new album, Eraser, if you need a Radiohead fix, or get George Winston if you want solo Piano. I really wish I could recommend this, but I just can't.

a bit disappointing.......2006-07-11

O'Riley takes some liberties here, and that's fine. I'm a bit disappointed by his dynamic range, which is a bit predictable from song to song, and also with his tendency to overload the songs with schizophrenic ramblings. The craziness works well at times -- see "There There" for a time when it works well -- and other times it is overwhelming (see: "Nice Dream").

Despite a sometimes overloaded sound, the song list is so attractive and O'riley hits so many high notes (if you will..) that the CD is well worth owning. I prefer the "True Love Waits" album.

Cocktail Party Radiohead.......2006-03-21

I own the first Christopher O'Reily Radiohead Tribute - True Love Waits. If you love his stunning piano in that, or if you love stunning piano altogether, you will love Hold Me To This. I am an avid lover of all things Radiohead turned into wordless music lullabyes and this one does not dissapoint.

Sound all the same...listen to the samples before you buy it. If your a fan of radiohead you wont like it...if your a fan of the piano you wont like it. But I give my respect to the musician for making the effort to replicate already beutiful music.

Gloria Estefan has a great voice that translates well in these songs. Yes they are all remakes, but for someone that mostly writes (or co-writes) all of their own music, then she is entitled to do some covers. She does these well.
Everlasting Love, It's Too Late, Traces and Turn The Beat Around are all the best songs. She's done a great job on this cd and I listen to it still even now. There are songs here for all different types of moods and it's thoroughly enjoyable and a real pleasure to listen to. I find it relaxing and fun and recommend it to all Gloria fans.

A CD Of All Remakes!!!.......2005-12-26

I bought this CD for the song It's Too Late. Had I realized that the whole CD was all remakes I wouldn't have purchased it. Most of the arrangements are disappointing and not even as good as the originals. Although, I like a lot of Gloria's music this CD will be taken to the used CD shop my next trip. Don't waste your money on this one!!!

Even singers "wax nostalgic" on occasion!.......2005-11-07

Estefan's 1994 release is a collection of songs of which she has an unending fondness. They run the spectrum of pop classics to disco ditties. Like a good segment of her fan base, Gloria is a "baby boomer" and these songs are perfect reminiscences of earlier musical times.

My favorites are her covers of "Everlasting Love," "You've Made Me So Very Happy," "Turn the Beat Around," "Love on a Two-Way Street" and the Copacabana-sounding "Cherchez La Femme".

On the disc's liner notes, each song is preceded by Estefan's commentary on the respective song's influence on her. Not only does the singer love the songs but she has an unabiding affection for the persons that originally performed them.

And her admiration is shown in her delivery and the buyer can experience equally shared enjoyment.

Best of the Goos.......2007-02-28

(First of all, I think the reviewer below me has this album confused with another one.)

I don't mind the Goo Goo Dolls today, but they're just another mainstream band compared to this album. Hold Me Up captrued the band at a transition between the extremely thrashy punk-inspired music of Jed and First Release and the more melodious, radio-friendly kind of music they would play from Superstar Car Wash on. This was the best time of their career. Their songs are catchy here, and yet they're still not watered down. Both Robby and John are at their best. Unlike Dizzy Up the Girl and all of their albums since, this doesn't sound like a Goo Goo Dolls who are yearning to play something more dynamic. This sounds like a Goo Goo Dolls who know exactly what it is they want to do, and they do exactly that. This album was a part of my childhood. I listened to this album at the same time as Dizzy Up the Girl. The difference is that Dizzy Up the Girl never stood the test of time. This album did.

I just wrote this on the spur of the moment. Perhaps later, I'll write a better review. In the meantime, just know that people who consider themselves fans of the Goo Goo Dolls because of their radio hits should educate themselves, and this should be their first album.

Recommended songs: ALL of them.

This is Where The G.G.D.'s Sold Out .......2007-02-07

As the title states, this was the end of the line for the goo's being a unique, passionate, relevant indie/punk band. The style,sound, and songwriting on here is a complete 180 from their first 2 records. There are a few decent ones, that is why I gave it a '2'. Unfortunately most of it veers towards the overrated watered down mainstream pop crap they put out to the present and the same type of stuff you heard on the radio over and over and over. They were still on Metal Blade for this release but you wouldn't know it. Johhny took over most of the songwriting and singing duties and it shows. From this record on, the material was saturated with overly cheesy ballads, ala Johnny. It is what made them successful, but in alienated me and other hard core fans who knew this was not the same band that used to make music from the heart. Each release after this got worse and worse, even though some of 'dizzy...' was decent like this. Please do not buy anything of the g.g.d;s after "jed" as it is just pathetic how fast this band turned into a made for aor radio sellout so quickly.

Goo Finally Holds Up.......2006-08-03

It was in 1990, when the rock group Goo Goo Dolls released their third album: HOLD ME UP. The record was intriguing. Mainly for the fact that the band was still in their experimental sound stage, and the music they produced was fairly decent. Johnny Rzeznik was definately the leader of the group. This is quite apparent with his fast paced scale based guitar licks and inversions of his chords. His performance was still in a progression, for Rzenzik still had to learn how to keep in time with his other band members. The rest of the band members needed work in this aspect of their musical performance as well. There are points within the songs that the players loose time and the piece slows or rushes. There are other times when the players get off in the beats within their rhythms they are suppose to perform. What stands out about this record is; Goo Goo Dolls still have their originality and are obviously having fun experimenting within their genre. Rzeznik's lyrics like always, are an admirable trait, and fit well with the pieces' style that the band performs. HOLD ME UP is classic Goo Goo Dolls sound, the style the band performed before hitting the Mainstream. It is a record to give attention to by Goo Goo Dolls fans because this is the album that the band's sound had progressed further than just hard, grudgy, and wailing rock.

Vintage Goo is Gritty Good-3.5 Stars.......2006-07-14

This is the album that Johnny referred to as their "real" first album. It's an enjoyable listen if like a more garage/jangle/rock sound. I personally enjoyed it when I first bought it back in 1999 and still listen it to it today because of surprisingly, its simplicity. There are no violins, piano, or other additional instruments in most of the songs. It's just guitar, bass, and drums. The song writing and delivery might not be as good as Superstar Car Wash or A Boy Named Goo but the rawness and lack of slickness adds to its blemished appeal. Surprisingly, Robby's voice sounds much better on this album than Dizzy Up The Girl (DUTG) and latter albums because his raspy voice compliments the muddy sounding guitar, bass, and drums.

Some fans whose first exposure to the Goo Goo Dolls is DUTG, Gutterflower, or (shivers) Let Love In might not enjoy this album because of its lack of ballads like Iris and it's harder sound. But longtime fans who longingly wish the Goos will get back to their Buffalo rocking roots will treasure it.

Just Gives You GOOS Bumps LOL........2005-10-26

Hey everyone at amazon.com. The Goo Goo Dolls are one of the best bands in the world any album of theres is a plus to your cd collection. Anyway Hold Me Up is one of there earlier albums that still retains there orignal hardcore punk sound from the 80's. This is a big part of the goo goo dolls as some of the tracks verge on what you here now on albums like Dizzy Up The Girl & Gutterflower. Back to the point the best track on this album are 2. Just The Way You Are, 4. There You are. But in fareness the stand out track on this must have album is Two Days In February. In conclusion i hate the people that say goo goo dolls older albums are there best as this is not true there music was good back then but it has evolved so much now the "Dizzy Up The Girl" and the "Gutterflower" albums are there best to date and the cover version of Supertramps "Give A Little Bit" is also cool. Don't hate evolotion!!!!
