Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars E.A.Kreuzer.......2006-02-19

Great sounds -- very reminiscent of Johnny Horton style.Seemed to cover all the best he had done during that period. As one who just loves that sound, I have played it over many times.

5 out of 5 stars True honky tonk.......2005-10-07

This is a great album which has absolutely superb sound. I'm nothing short of impressed with the mix; and all of the numbers are stereo with the exception of "Things that Mean the Most". This album covers Carl Smith's era of the 60's, when the "nashville Sound" was in full swing. As one other reviewer so rightly pointed out, Carl didn't play that game....he stayed true to the Honky Tonk sound. And after you hear the tracks on this album, it will surprise you that only 2 made it to the Top Ten. Despite that, country music owes a huge debt of gratitude to Carl for staying true to his sound, and for disregarding the orchestral shreiking sounds which dominated the country charts at the time. The album starts out with "Ten Thousand Drums" which is in the same vein as Johnny Horton. You'll recognize many of these songs as they were later covered by other artists, to include none other than George Strait ("Deep Water") and Charlie Walker ("Good Deal Lucille"). Personally, I think Carl's finest track on the disc is "You ought to Hear me Cry" or possible "Triangle". In any case, you need this album.

4 out of 5 stars Essential, well worth the wait........2003-09-11

Now, don't look at the song listing and say to yourself "Man only ONE top ten hit, must not be that good."

Well, you will be suprised. Carl Smith continued making some of the best Country Music ever to be recorded long after his hit making days were over.

All songs are the original recordings, and have been remastered to sound crystal clear.

Now my Carl Smith collection is almost complete. I have The Essential, The Sixties Hits, and Curb Records The Best Of. All we need now is a comilation of his late 50's hits and a cd reissue of his gospel lp from the mid fifties.

              Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars An eclectic collection of top 10 tunes from the Sixties.......2003-11-05

"Top Hits Of The Sixties: Coolest Hits" is not, despite the above claim, a collection of #1 songs from that particular decade, although all twenty of these tracks made it to the top region of the Billboard tracks. The only serious complaint with this collection is that it ignores the British invasion, which keeps it from being a truly representative sampling of Sixties music. What this CD collection has in its favor is that it has some of the more eclectic hits from that period: Lorne Greene's "Ringo," the theme from "The Good, The Bad And The Ugly," "The Ballad Of The Green Berets" by Ssgt. Barry Sadler, and "In The Year 2525 (Exordium & Terminus)" by the paradigmatic one hit wonders Zager & Evans. I think this more than counterbalances the bubblegum ("Yummy Yummy Yummy," "Simon Says") and other perky songs by lightweight artists ("We'll Sing In The Sunshine," "The Worst That Can Happen"). There are only two mega-hits in the mix, The Lovin' Spoonful's "Summer in the City" and The 5th Dimensions' "Aquarius/Let the Sun Shine In," but the value of these collections is not to have another CD with hit songs you already own on hit collections by the actual groups. The value is always going to be if you can add five or more songs to your music collection that you do not already have. With songs like "Oh Happy Day" there is an above average chance that "Top Hits of the Sixties: Coolest Hits" will meet that challenge, especially by offering a more than respectable 20 tracks on a single disc.

              Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Contains original (short-lived) version of Big Bad John.......2005-03-29

The previous reviews mention the different versions of the ending phrase of the song Big Bad John: "at the bottom of this mine lies a hell of a man" or the reissued version which changed the words "hell of a man" to "big, big man." The first issues of the 45 version did, in fact, use the "hell" version, but due to some disgruntled listeners a new "sanitized" version quickly replaced the original issue. So, in fact, the "hell of a man" version was actually the first "original" version.

4 out of 5 stars Yes, all the originals!.......2004-12-12

This collection of hits from the 60s is indeed all the original artists and songs. Commenting on the previous reviewer, it is possible that way back in 1960, when Jimmy Dean's Big Bad John was getting radio airplay, that the word "hell" was deemed too inappropiate, so consequently there might have been two versions of the song recorded back then in 1960. Some of us remember that when Elvis was on The Ed Sullivan Show, that he was filmed from the waist up since his shaking hips were deemed a little too risky for that era of time.Just my opinion and explanation for what it's worth. 2 out of 5 stars Not quite all the originals.......2004-05-17

I bought this CD mainly because I was looking for the original hit version of Jimmy Dean's 'Big bad John'. Well it's not there. On the original version which I taped more than 20 years ago from a Jim Pewter show the last line goes "On the bottom of this mine lies A BIG, BIG MAN, Big John", but on this CD Jimmy sings "On the bottom of this mine lies ONE HELL OF A MAN, Big John". It's close, but NOT the original take. Don't be fooled, check your old records and tapes.

If you like modern jazz (after the swing era) you'll enjoy Gene Ammon's CD. There were hits on this CD that I did not even know was here! I love listening to it. Really mellow baby!
