My music is actually classified in music stores here in St. Louis as "inspirational/New Age". I sing about the beauty of all life and thanking the holy spirit... or whatever you would like to call the creator. Plese note: I AM NOT A CHRISTIAN SINGER. My CD divider card in stores reads as follows: A singer, songwriter who writes about her own life's experiences with tremendous emotion and insight. Her music has been played on KEZK radio. She has also performed songs from her new release on the Channel 4 Morning Show, and Channel 11 News did a story on her. (They are talking to producers at the Oprah Winfrey show about getting me on there, they really like the story...which is why I want to hook up with Amazon) Mitzi comes to us from Nova Scotia, Canada. She has performed all over Canada and many parts of the US. This is her fourth album of orignal music. She has recorded and worked in Nashville, TN. Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Well worth the price.......2006-04-13

I love this CD. No, despite its name it is not the "ultimate" collection, as scarcely could be expected from a single CD. It is heavy on Mikado, as others have stated. It leaves out things I would have included and includes things I would have left out. But the performances are wonderful, traditional and all you expect from G&S. Considering the low price, it is well worth including in your G&S collection ... as PART of your collection. After the disappointment of the godawful Opera World video series (Don't buy it!) this CD is a joy and a relief.

Not Exactly "The Ultimate" Collection..........2004-12-23

It seems that a collection of Gilbert & Sullivan music that has the name "The Ultimate Collection" in its title would boast a wide range of music, but I found the selection disappointing. Half of the tracks are songs from The Mikado, and the other half is divided between five... yes, FIVE other operettas. This means that the representation from each operetta is awfully scant. I would have liked to see less Mikado and more of everything else, and perhaps some highlights from the more obscure operettas (Princess Ida and The Sorcerer, namely).

In addition, while most of the music is very well performed, some of the vocalists either go a bit overboard or, at the very opposite end, seem to lack expression. For example, this Nanki-Poo (in The Mikado) seems to be overly occupied with vibrato. Katisha's voice is annoying, and The Mikado's low voice often seems to lack feeling and humor. The other idiosyncracies, like the very frightening evil laughing during "A More Humane Mikado" and hissing during "Three Little Maids" really bug me.

Then again, I'm new to Gilbert and Sullivan, and was introduced to the music through the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, which has a noticeably less operatic style, and hardly includes "stage noise"... so perhaps all this is the norm. Do listen to the tracks for yourself, though, before you purchase the CD. Personally, I find that the Topsy Turvy soundtrack, while considerably less ecompassing, is much lighthearted and easier listening.

Where's the chicks?!?!.......2003-05-15

It wouldn't be G&S if not for the ladies - so where are they? How could they leave out Mabel's aria - or Josephine's!? The only female aria included on this disc comes from Mikado, which is the least exciting (if G&S could be un-exciting) of the three! Everything else on the recording is great, but I am still quite disappointed.

Not quite the ultimate...........2002-03-25

This is a great collection, but unfortunately it doesn't have songs from all the works of G&S. Most notably, there is nothing from the "Yeoman of the Guard". I still reccommed it however as John Reed is wonderful!!

Great Music - Questionable Selection.......2002-02-05

It's an ongoing challenge to find a recording of Gilbert and Sullivan that combines premium musicality and great theatrical performance. This recording is a true gem on both fronts. My only complaint is that for a "Best of" collection, this compilation is Mikado-heavy and scarcely touches on highlights from other masterpieces, particularly The Pirates of Penzance. This would be my favorite G&S CD of all time, of only it included tracks like "When the Foeman Bares his Steel," "Poor Wand'ring One," and "Dry the Glist'ning Tear," but then again, I guess there's no real consensus as to which are Gilbert and Sullivan's best works, and there are too many to fit on one CD.

The Best Of Gilbert And Sullivan.......2004-03-15

At the end of the 19th century (1870's, 80's and 90's) the compatible duo of librettist and composer Gilbert and Sullivan popularized the pre-Broadway entertainment of Savoy opera. These were light operas or operettas whose content was satire and comedy, full of bouncy melodies and beautiful singing, highly entertaining theatrical works staged at London's Savoy theatre. Gilbert and Sullivan did not always get along and in fact there was a time when they ended their professional relationship because personal conflicts surfaced. But they managed to create the world's most beloved light operas, over 40 of them. Their most famous are what I call the Big Three- The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance and The Mikado. Other works include their first hit Trial By Jury, The Yeomen Of The Guard, Princess Ida, The Gondoliers, Patience and several others. A standard signature of Gilbert and Sullivan was in the colorful cast- a comic actor with a special kind of baritone voice, a canary-like and sweet-voiced coloratura or lyric diva, a mezzo soprano with strong chest register and a lyric tenor as the romantic hero. On this album, English conductor Sir Charles Mackerras, a popular figure in the classical music scene and opera, guides the Chorus and Orchestra Of the Welsh National Opera in generally well-delivered performances of excerpts from the operas The Mikado, The H.M.S. Pinafore, The Pirates Of Penzance, Yeomen Of The Guard and Trial By Jury. Although I feel that the recordings made by the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company, with Isodore Godfrey conducting and starring the best cast of the Gilbert and Sullivan repertoire- the singers of the 60's and 70's- tenor Phillip Potter, soprano Valerie Masterson, baritone John Reed, Donald Adams and mezzo soprano Christine Palmer. Their version of the Pirates Of Penzance and the Mikado far outshine the Welsh National Opera in technical mastery and vibrant tone color.

But these are fine excerpts. Especially appealing is the famous and cheerful "Three Little Maids From School Are We", a trio that imitates Japanese style melody. Most of the Mikado does this, for it was inspired by Japanisme or the new fashion in Victorian England- everything Japanese, from prints to paintings to poetry. Gilbert and Sullivan simply "Japanized" their English operettas. The Finale "For He's Gone To Marry Yum Yum" is an ebullient and pleasant finale. Not featured here is the domineering and powerful Katisha, a figure who stands out in the Mikado.

The H.M.S. Pinafore is Gilbert and Sullivan's most popular work. The sea chanty "We Sail The Ocean Blue" opens the opera with appropriate atmosphere and it seems to fit perfectly with the other scene in which the Captain greets his crew and they sing his praises "My Gallant Crew..I am the Captain Of The Pinafore". A beautiful melody that seems to come out of a romantic Offenbach tune is "I"m Called Little Buttercup". The finale, not featured here, is also very engaging "For He Is An Englishman" which can almost resemble a British national anthem. The Yeomen Of The Guard was Gilbert and Sullivan's "serious opera" eventhough it remains very Savoyard. The plot deals with Tudor England and takes place at the London Tower. "I have a song to sing" makes use of what can be taken for an English ballad of the Renaissance. Trial By Jury, about the eccentric and hilarious activity of a court trial, has a sextet that although different in composition, has the sextet "Che Mi Frena" from Donizetti's Lucia Di Lammermoor in mind. All in all, an excellent recording sure to delight young and old.

--Gilbert & Sullivan--
William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan were a match made in heaven, yet on earth their pairing seems even with hindsight a most unlikely coupling. Both were destined for other things, Gilbert in fact for decidedly non-musical careers. Introduced by a mutual friend, Fred Clay, the fledgling lyricist Gilbert met the military-band-leader's son Sullivan and together continued to conspire to inspire the delights of audiences from high Victorian times down to the present, as their work in musical theatre comedy continues to provide merriment throughout the English-speaking world and beyond.

--The Music--
This collection includes highlights from five of the most popular Gilbert & Sullivan operettas: The Mikado, HMS Pinafore, The Pirates of Penzance, The Yeoman of the Guard, and Trial by Jury. The arrangements and orchestrations are delightfully energetic and clear; the characterisation and vocal qualities of the leads are perfect for their roles. The haughty if misplaced Lord of the Admiralty has the perfect combination of insecurity and pompous officiousness. The Plaintiff and the Defendant in the Trial are perfectly cast. This is a collection of highlights - at least three but no more than seven songs each, but this gives a good flavour of the music. The recordings on this collection come from complete performances by Mackerras and the WNO.

--Sir Charles Mackerras--
Mackerras is one of the geniuses of the twentieth century musical scene. Having a conducting career that includes the Hamburg Opera, the English National Opera (formerly Sadlers Wells Opera), and the Welsh National Opera (the performers for this piece), he has also conducted major orchestras on the continent of Europe and in the United States. The holder of many major awards and honourary doctorates, he has devoted much time and energy to the preservation and performance of eighteenth and nineteenth century music, as well the restoration of historical musical venues, such as the Estates Theatre in Prague, scene of the original production of Don Giovanni (Mackerras conducted the opera there to commemorate the bicentenary of the death of Mozart).

--Welsh National Opera Orchestra and Chorus--
The seeds of the WNO were planted in Cardiff during World War II by music lovers; the first performances occurred a year after the war's end, with Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci on the bill, with Faust the next night. Popular appeal was so great that the WNO was established, later adding choruses in both Cardiff and Swansea. The professional chorus was established in 1973, with a strength that matches the orchestra. They continue an ambitious performance schedule for recording and live events; Mackerras remains the Conductor Emeritus, as the WNO continues under the direction of Carlo Rizzi. The list of awards the WNO has won over the years is staggering - they are a world class institution by any measure.

--Other performers--
Notable singers such as Richard Stuart, Rebecca Evans, Felicity Palmer, John Mark Ainsley and Anne Howells lead the chorus with stunning vocals and clever characterisations of the parts they play. Many (such as Stuart and Evans) play the leading roles across several of the pieces of the disc.

--Liner Notes--
The liner notes give a good introduction and biographical information about Gilbert and Sullivan, as well as synopses of the five pieces presented here. It does not, unfortunately, include any information about Mackerras, the WNO Orchestra and Chorus, or the other special performers. It also does not include the lyrics to the songs. Were the quality of the CD not so great, this might cost it a star in rating.

--Overall Impressions--
I play this CD in my car, in my home and in my office frequently. It is a great sing-along work and a great comedic relief from the stresses of the day. The music is bubbly and clear; the recording quality is excellent and crisp. I recommend this to any Gilbert & Sullivan lover, any fan of musical comedy, opera and operettas, and anyone who delights in good music.

Delicious G&S samplings abound here........2003-05-06

The first thing I should be saying is "What an infectuous G&S CD." Indeed this is, with this fine sampling of the peppy and bright Mackerras series. I know I have praised its "Mercedes-Benz quality" elsewhere on these pages, but that doesn't stop me from saying that everyone is in fine voice. This generously filled CD may only focus on five operas, but at least you can savour a reasonable choice sampling of delights from each one. Of particular interest is Richard Suart's patter-baritone parts and the soaring lyric soprano of Rebecca Evans. The selection on this disc is filled with a mixture of familiar favourites and lesser-known gems such as the female choruses in Mikado and Pirates. Mackerras is a true G&S conductor, but one who always springs rhythms crisply, and adopts peppy tempo for the fast bits. The one drawback is that this selection is far too infectuous that you'll want to shell out money to buy the full 5-CD Mackerras cycle - an incredible bargain with most of the operas fitted onto one disc each. But still, this is at least a decent G&S sampling for beginners, capped with Steven Ledbetter's copious liner notes. It will leave you wanting to say "dammit I'm going to play it again."

Fine Intro to G&S.......2000-12-30

This is the perfect CD for those who may not be familiar with G&S, or for the initiated who want a smattering but don't have the mother of all CD changers. The difficulty with any G&S Greatest Hits CD is determining which pieces to leave off; while one could easily point to any number equally good bits, it would be difficult to argue about the quality of the choices included. The only problem, such as it is, is that after listening to it I am usually induced to go back and listen to the whole opera anyway. The Mackerras recordings are uniformly excellent. I have read elsewhere the criticism that they are too 'operatic' for light opera. If by this it is meant that the singers are too good, then I leave it to the discretion of the listener when the singing becomes too good to be enjoyable.

Ronald Isley had a 2003 that most artists would envy. The Isley Brothers' Body Kiss went to No. 1 in its first week in the Billboard charts in the spring. Still riding that triumph, the veteran singer teamed with master writer-arranger Burt Bacharach for this set of sumptuous ballads. Such event records - often made to cash in at holiday time or to lift a sagging artist profile - aren't always musically successful, but Here I Am is undeniable. Recording live vocals with a full orchestra in the manner of Bacharach's '60s sessions with Dionne Warwick and others, Isley brings a quietude to this selection of Bacharach-Hal David classics and a couple of new collaborations between the composer and Tonio K. "Raindrops Keep Falling on My Head" gets the most radical reinterpretation; no longer jaunty, it's transformed into something bluer but ultimately full of hope. Here it is!.......2007-05-13

You have to wonder when Mr Bacharach will finally focus on his horses and give up the music. Thankfully for the fans he just seems to have this never ending streak of creativity. BB has colaborated with so many over the years and this effort with one of the Isley brothers is as good as any. The fact is, most of these songs were sung by women in the past and the unique sound of Mr Isley voice and the fresh arrangements by Bacharach bring new life to some great classics. The interpolating of some newer songs with some of these older tracks is astounding. These guys aint spring chickens but the work is energetic, soulful, lush. Do these people ever get tired???? I for one never tire of listening. If you like Burt..just buy it!

The first time I heard this CD was on a fund raiser program for public television and I wanted it. The melding of Bacharach's lyrics and music with Ron Isley's beautiful voice captivates me and I play the CD over and over. Beautiful music moves me to tears for it reminds me of the beauty of God's hands in our lives; creating us and filling us with gifts that shower us with blessings. Buy it and just sit back and listen over and over. It's simply beautiful!

Masterful Songs Exquisitely Expressed.......2006-11-17

Anything Burt Bacharach gets involved with is worth checking out, and so when this surprising combination of talent appeared on ITunes, I couldn't hit the 'buy' button fast enough! Burt seems to have taken to offbeat collaborations in the last decade, beginning with that wonderful 'Painted by Memory' album around 1998 in which he collaborated with Elvis Costello on all new original material. That album is a gem and one of the most powerfully emotional recordings I own.

Here, he enlists the vocal stylings of Ron Isley of the Isley Brothers' R&B fame. Quite a departure, but then again, not really. Isley seems to fit perfectly at home in his very original interpretations of Bacharach's material. The set includes many old Bacharach favorites, as well as a contemporary gem: 'Still the Answer' -a very timely and heartfelt statement of hope and one of Burt's best, which is really saying alot.

The arrangements here strike me as strongly Burt's, with all his signature' sensibilities fully intact, but they seem to follow Isley's very personal vocal interpretations in mood so well, I have to consider this a truly collaborative effort between these two unlikely partners. The result here is a true work of art. Make no mistake, this is a 'swooners' record, and a great soundtrack for making love. It has alot of 'space' between the notes, and is richly imbued with that romantic, sensual ambiance.

I've been listening to this album for a couple of years and just love it. I'm not tired of it. It never fails to put me in a relaxed, and very 'feeling' space. There is not a song here that fails to move me. Take Alfie, as a prime example. Admittedly, I am a huge fan of Bacharach... but these renditions are among the best that have been done with these exquisite songs. And they are so different and unique from the originals that they almost stand alone as different songs altogether.

Another important note here: One shouldn't forget the immense contribution of lyricist Hal David here. He was so gifted in fusing Burts complex melodies into statements that perfectly match the mood of the music. This becomes VERY apparent in Ron Isley's sensitive treatment of the songs. You really notice what is being said, and it's a powerful statement.

Music of this high caliber is few and far between. This one deserves to be searched out. Highly recommended.

Although quite unknown in Holland I was advised to buy this album which I obviously did. No regrets. At the contrary even. What an appealing album this is. It's almost as good as the one with Elvis Costello, at least from my perspective.

Streisand's rendition of MEMORY has always been my favorite version of the song outside of the show...Betty Buckley's is my favorite within the show. I am a Streisand afficiando, and this is my FAVORITE Streisand song period..so it must be good...

If you are an Andrew Lloyd Webber fan, you probably already own some of the versions of songs on this CD. Having them all in one package is nice. I like to listen to this at work, as I know the music so well that it is nice background. I could do without Amigos Para Siempre.

Disappointed.......2007-05-24

The first Marion Raven song that I had heard was "Heads Will Roll" when I bought the National Lampoon's Rise of Taj soundtrack. I may have a bias because I'm a freak for Nikki Sixx, but I though the song was amazing. I kept thinking "Wow this song's awesome! She's got a great voice! She's so edgy."

I bought the cd without hearing any of the other tracks. My mistake. I heard the rest of her cd and I didn't hear that edginess that I was excited to hear. Even the song that I was first introduced to sounded different and overly poppy.

I was hoping for Alanis Morissette meets Fiona Apple (or better), and I got Avril Lavigne meets Veruca Salt meets Michelle Branch. Talk about a let down.

Worth Ravin' About.......2007-02-02

Actually I would rank this 4.5 stars normally, but because of the sheer amount of music here (there are 15 tracks, almost enough to be a double-disc) I rated it as a five. Here is why. Marion Raven has stepped up the attitude and the hard-rock edge here, in comparison to her past work with M2M, and the songs are tight, emotionally charged tunes that showcase both her sweet voice and a harder, angst-ridden edge. And she is no Skye Sweetnam either, which is a good thing, as Marion doesn't sound like another pathetic concoction of pre-packaged, overproduced drivel (like Kelly Clarkson, etc.) She is the real deal, and it shows here. This is probably not her peak album, but if she improves on this the next time around then she could surpass the likes of Avril Lavigne and rise to the forefront of this genre. There is much to love here, including the thumping anthem "Crawl" and the energetic opener "Get Me Outta Here." Marion dosen't have the whiny, annoying wail of Avril or Alanis either, making this a straight-up rock record without the nails-on-the-chalkboard effect. Marion pours her heart into this record without the melodrama of Clarkson, without the self-righteousness of Fergie, and without the "I sing pretty pop songs but I pretend to look angry and gothic to sell records" approach of Amy Lee. So, all in all, this is probably the female pop-rock record of the year for 2006. And, granted there was not much competition in 2006 for this category, you can bet that if Kelly and Avril don't step up their game soon, Marion Raven will break through big-time. There is NOTHING not to like about her, really.

I've had the opportunity to see her live and she has an awesome voice that should be heard, but the direction she has chosen to take with this album is beneath her talent. Both the music and lyrics lack any originality and could have been better. If you want to rock out to a below average rock record, I woudn't even recomend it then. It's a shame that she has sold herself out to this garbage and I'm certainly disapointed. I'm not going to bother commenting on the pornagraphic video from this album other than what the heck is she thinking?

REALLY GOOD MODERN POP/ROCK RECORD.......2006-04-12

You might know Marion Raven as the pretty (and then later sultry) brunette from M2M. Well, she's all grown up now (as if their 2nd album wasn't any indication of that - that girl suddenly became all sexy and voluptuous) and she's got a lot to write about for this new album.

In retrospect, it's a pretty solid, polished post-millennial pop/rock album, but don't just easily put it as a totally average album. It's chock full of tracks that are as catchy as they are sincere. Having your album produced by uber pop god Max Martin kinda helps out a lot, crafting a slick pop/rock album that's as accessible as it seems artistic.

All the tracks are great, by the way. Did I mention Marion Raven's easy on the eyes too (even though she tries to seem more boho and grungy with this one - she's still very much prepackaged and hot). Here's a track-by-track review of the album:

1. "End Of Me" - One of the catchiest tracks off the album is also one of the loudest and most frenetic: a stomper of a pop/rock anthem in the same vein as Kelly Clarkson's "Since U Been Gone" and The Veronicas' "4Ever." This one adds an eeriness that's different from the direct mainstream approach of the other two artists, especially with the use of the piano and guitar in the intro. Great, catchy, fast-paced track that's used to open the album with a bang.

2. "Here I Am" - A full on declaration, well, since the track's pretty self-explanatory. Angsty, yet loud at the same time. It's still catchy, but it's also epic with the use of the strings and big midtempo rockin' beats in the background.

3. "Break You" - THIS is a pop anthem here. Sounds like a pissed off female version to Backstreet Boys' "Incomplete," except more suited for an arena rock stadium. This is as loud as the album gets, and it's pretty damn loud.

4. "Crawl" - Not as instantly catchy as the first three tracks and not as outstanding either, but it's still catchy, bouncy, yet angsty pop/rock.

5. "Little By Little" - The pace slows down a bit and I think one weakness of the album is how the slowed down songs make the mood more somber than they are (since a lot of the album deals with angst to begin with, fast or slow songs alike). It's sweet and innocent, but it lacks the power of the other tracks.

6. "Get Me Out Of Here" - Another catchy pop/rock track that's expected at this point. It gets formulaic, yet it's still a lot of fun to listen to because it's anthemic, fast, and catchy.

7. "13 Days" - Another epic pop/rock track that's unlike the darker mainstream stuff Evanescence and Avril Lavigne have done lately. It's got a growling background with strings and bass, but it's all to the effect. Pretty good.

8. "For You I'll Die" - An ode to a lover. Marion Raven pours her heart out for this one, mainly because it's a very piano-laden ballad that's sparse and not as polished as the other tracks. It's a very intimate candlelight setting, but eerie at the same time.

9. "Let Me Introduce Myself" - Yet another catchy mid-tempo pop/rock track. It's okay, especially since there have been other better tracks that came before it.

10. "Heads Will Roll" - Great intro: almost Bj?rk-like, but it then turns out to be a really rockin' track that's just as pissed-off-sounding as any angry track here. It's darker and more experimental, yet it's not totally alienating.

11. "At The End Of The Day" - One of a few lighter moments in the album, it's pretty cheesy because it's lightweight adult contemporary/alternative. It's happy and catchy.

12. "Six Feet Under" - Like "13 Days," it's epic, yet this is more melodic and straight up pop/rock rather than trying to be a super orchestrated track. It's one of the slower Max Martin tracks, yet it's one of the best in the album because it's so melodic.

13. "Gotta Be Kidding" - A total change from "Six Feet Under" because the melody in this ain't as familiar and it's so disjointed. It's weird, but it's still straight up pop/rock. The random blasts of energy during the chorus is weird too, but you get used to it.

14. "In Spite Of Me" - Like "Little By Little," it's a more sweet track that shows a more vulnerable side to Marion Raven, the solo artist. It's a nice way to close the album because it's so simple and sweet, but it closes it in a sleepy manner.

So this album is actually a mixed bag of pissed off rocky numbers, some okay pop/rockers, and some sentimentally sweet slow numbers. With her thin, yet clear voice, she's best when she sings and not screams, yet her louder tracks end up being her catchier ones. "Here I Am" may not be Marion at her peak yet, but it's a great indication of what she's capable of: she's a promising artist with great potential, even though she might seem like another slick concauction of the pop industry.

Our 3-year-old son LOVES this CD!! He actually goes around singing worship songs -- and I've heard him singing them in bed at night. :) It's also very enjoyable for parents to listen to. And our son is excited when he knows the songs in church! :)

Great for kids with Autism!.......2007-04-10

As a parent of profoundly autistic twin boys, who have the capability of repeating phrases and parts of songs LOUDLY and without regard to where they are (be it school or a basketball game, the grocery store, library, etc.) this CD has been a Godsend. Literally. Now they sing about God everywhere and no one can stop them =)=) Rock On!

Kid's Worship.......2006-02-21

A great music CD for kids. "Here I Am to Worship for Kids" will give your kids a chance to learn the praise and worship songs they will hopefully be singing for a long time.

Excellent for Children and Adults.......2005-11-26

When I bought this CD I expected that it would help my kids to worship. What I didn't expect was that it would provide a deep worship experience for me as well. I have been introducing these songs in our Children's Church. They are age appropriate arrangements of many of the same modern worship songs our church loves. Another benefit was the reaction of my kids worship adult volunteers. With other music they had participated mainly to set a good example for the children. With these songs the grown-ups have a meaningful worship experience.

I would recommend this CD for family worship, children's church or for the car.

Classic 60s dionne LP gets remastered!.......2007-05-24

When Rhino Records' specialty imprint, Rhino Handmade began releasing limited edition Dionne Warwick CDs of her 60s catalog, fans were thrilled. Deluxe packaging, copious notes, awesome sound, and TONS of extras. Well, they did about 4, promised more to come, and then... nothing. Little by little though, her rare out of print catalog has been trickling out.

Which brings us to the Collector's Choice batch, just out now. Pretty straight-forward, no frills or bonus tracks... but good sound and decent liner notes. Hey, I'm just happy they are putting more rarities in print. Only a few Dionne gems left to go now...

Here I Am is one of my faves of her work, finding her moving gradually into her sophisticated pop phase. There are lots of ballads, gentle bossa nova ditties and even a gospel-style track. The lyrics are clever, with a dark underside that belies the sunny melodies. Dionne finds the heart of those lyrics, elevating the precedings to art.

Although many dismiss her mid to late 60s era as easy-listening pop, I think it's incredible stuff. Dionne has the grit and soul to move you, no matter what style she sings in.

Warwick reissued! Again and again?.......2007-05-24

Warner continues to make money off the legendary diva's Scepter label material. I wonder how much has been made to date. Prior re-releases have
been reissued in the UK and Japan of this LP and her many others from the 60s. Seems like every time she has new material out, her former record label puts out her oldies to cash in on her yet again. HOW TACKY and GREEDY THAT IS!

Fantastic performances........2005-05-02

"Maldoror" is a unique concept, producer Michael Montes put text rom Comte de Lautreamont in front of Friedlander-- the master cellist read the text and improvised what he saw. The results are nothing short of breathtaking.

If you're not familiar with Friedlander's work with John Zorn and others, you're likely in for quite a pleasant surprise-- I can think of very few musicians I have had the pleasure of hearing who possess such a stunning command of their instrument as Friedlander does. His technique is overwhelming, particularly in pizzicato, and as an improviser, he is agile and inventive. These lead to the great strength of this record, namely that Friedlander can through his technique express something much more visceral than one would expect from any musical performance.

The improvisations are largely oriented on texture and space, whether arco or pizzicato-- each note counts, as does each lack of note. Friedlander may have an overwhelming technique, but what makes both him and this recording brilliant is his ability to make decisions about when to show it and when not to. "The Wind Groans", for example, is better served by long tones and understated delivery, to meet the mood of the piece he read, then it is by any show of powerful playing.

For fans of improvised music and virtuoso performance, this album is essential. Highly recommended.

Dark, Weird & Accessible.......2004-01-12

I bought this because I saw a piece on Erik and this record in the Wire, a magazine I really trust. And though it's not the kind of thing I usually pick up, I love Maldoror. It consists of dark and atmospheric cello scraping, bowing, plucking, and pulling -- all improvised. I know, I know, it sounds like it'd be really weird and inaccessible, but there's something about Friedlander's sense of melody, his technique, and his ability to compose on the fly that makes this a record a classy little thing. It makes me think of dark moments, French films, and John Coltrane's best work. Try it. You'll like it.

best CD in 5 years.......2005-12-09

This is the best CD I have bought in at least five years. And it's at Target for $10 right now!!! Double CD for $10!!
Another reviewer really slammed this CD and gave a list of CDs to buy instead. Funny thing, I own all of the CDs he listed. They are great CDs, but this album is like the icing on the cake. This is the only CD I own that I don't skip any tracks "to get to the good ones". i am so blessed by this CD. Ask for it for Christmas or your birthday!!!

A terrific introduction to contemporary worship!.......2005-10-21

I'm 32 years old, and I have four kids. This 2-CD set has been a blessing for all of us. We attend a Vineyard church, and a lot of the music is familiar to us because of that. But if you're new to worship music, this is a great selection.

I have read that many of these songs are available on other compilations and that there are few new tracks. In my opinion, the songs chosen for this set and the order even is perfect. Again, check the list of tracks before you buy it--in case you get duplicates--but it's a wonderful heart-lifting set to get immersed in the music deidicated to God.

Another vote of approval.......2005-01-07

I am an avid Christian music collector and bought this collection when it first came out. Yes, it does have a fair number of re-releases but it also does include otherwise unavailable live versions of "Beautiful One" by Tim Hughes and "Holy is the Lord" by Chris Tomlin which subsequently appeared on their next studio releases in the Fall of 2004. The reason I even read the reviews of a collection I own is that Here I Am To Worship Vol. 2 is scheduled to be released on 1/25/05 and I was looking up which tracks would be included. Overall, if you are looking to build a Christian worship music collection, this is a worthwhile choice along with the I Could Sing of Your Love Forever, WoW Worship and Passion collections.

This is a Wonderful CD Set.......2004-10-17

I'm writing primarily because of one of the other reviews posted which was less than favorable. Certainly different people will like different types of music but I absolutely love this CD set. I'm 33 and enjoy contemporary Christian music. My 36-year-old brother is at Wal-Mart right now trying to find this CD because he heard me playing it on my computer. Amazon offers sound-bytes. Listen to them and make your own determination. My fav is Vicky Beeching's "Yesterday, Today and Forever" followed by the first three tracks on CD1.

A Spectacular Collection.......2004-06-21

My newly christian friend picked this up for pretty cheap and it has turned out to be an inspiration. Although all the songs are not by the "normal" artists, it is still powerful to hear these songs by ANY artist! This is truly a very complete worship collection, our worship team actually does a good number of the songs on the cd.

I'd say about 85 % of the tracks are enjoyable, some of the "new" ones are not that great. There is NO way to resist the urge to lift your voice in praise when you hear soars with lyrics like "Beautiful one, I love you", "Crucified! Laid behind the stone, you lived to die, rejected and alone. Like a rose, trampled on the ground. You took the fall and thought of me, above all!", or "You set my feet to dancing, you set my heart a fire, in the presence of a thousand kings you are my one desire."

No matter the artist, this CD is pure and honest praise at it's greatest. A very complete compelation that which will almost certainly have you worshiping in no time.
