You'll find your faith again............2004-12-10

The movie was outstanding, the soundtrack just as good. Steve Martin stars as a burned-out charlatan evangelist who comes to a town that hasn't had rain in a long time. Martin finds his own faith throught the course of the plot. You'll find yours just listening to the soundtrack. The CD opens up with Don Henley's "You better sit down" which surprisingly made the charts. Patti Labelle and Edwin Hawkin's "Are you ready for a Miracle" was probably the most stunning piece of the whole album, but all the music is upbeat and heartening. One minus was the instrumental music was not included.

Disappointing, but contains some gems.......2004-10-31

Disappointing, mostly because this CD contains different (and inferior) versions of many of the songs in the movie. Nevertheless, it contains a couple of gems. In particular, the Patti Labelle version of "Are You Ready for a Miracle" is so powerful that one listen could make Osama fall on his knees and praise Jesus.

The Incidental Music Is Not On This CD.......2004-03-21

Like the other reviewer of March 2000, I was hoping that the exceedingly beautiful background music would be included, but it wasn't and I don't know why. Not everyone loves Gospel. I am not religious, and I'll listen to Gospel music in a movie, but I certainly won't listen to it on purpose!

The best music in this movie which I watched a dozen times just to hear it is near the end when the rains finally come to the parched, drought-forever town. It simply gives you goose pimples. This CD is like the score to "The Horse Whisperer", if you're not careful (like me) you ended up with nothing but country singing, not knowing there was a 2nd CD made with Thomas Newman's spectacular score! The producers of movie score CD's should know there's two types of customers: those who like songs and others who like just the instrumental background music. They lose the latter market if they don't pay attention.

Great Gospel Soundtrack.......2003-04-08

This is a rare occasion that Hollywood would put out a movie with a great gospel soundtrack. If you haven't seen the film, you're missing out on a special treat. It's about a man who loses faith and finds it again. Hollywood has the ability to make good films, but they only come around once in a while. I believe that any old-fashioned Christian will really enjoy this soundtrack. It's the best fun you can have of this quality. It's quality comes from the talent of Cliff Eidelman who composes works for 'Alien Trilogy,' 'Free Willy 3,' 'Star Trek VI,' 'A Simple Twist of Fate,' and 'My Girl 2.'

'Change in My Life' sung by John Pagano, has been recorded by artists "Rockapella." You remember the Maxwell House guys from their album, 'Don't Tell Me You Do.' An uplifting song that will bring joy and hope to the broken hearted. It's soulful melody and smooth rhythms will rock you away to Heaven. Meat Loaf who stars in the movie and sings 'Paradise by the Dashboard Light.' Others to compliment the album are the talents of Don Henley (The Eagles), Patti LaBelle, in her best guest appearance and Wynnona Judd. Rounding it out is Jazz scene's own George Duke. And, Black Gospel's top lady Albertina Walker singing 'Blessed Assurance.' The most exciting of the film at the end when the rains come and the people are celebrating. It just puts the Holy Spirit all through you. Cliff Eidelman does a great job of putting this soundtrack together. You can check out more of his work in, 'Now and Then' and 'One True Thing.' If you like more of great gospel music done by top artists may I suggest 'The Apostle-[Sountrack]' from the film starring Robert Duvall. I just know you'll be changed after hearing this.

One way to confront a strict religious upbringing..........2004-03-21

A rock-heavy twangcore concept album about a sex-drenched country evangelical gal who likes nooky and drugs as much as she likes going down on her knees to praise the Lord. It opens with a foul-mouthed parody of Rick Springfield's "Surrender," and amplifies the theme with numerous songs such as "Misguided Magdalene," "Highway 69," and the menstrual-themed "Ride The Cotton Pony," as well as cover tunes like the Jules Styne showtune, "I Knew Jesus (Before He Was A Star)" that seem to fit into the album's theme. I think they're aiming for a profane, "Rocky Horror"-ish shock value, and for rebellious listeners recently in the thrall of a Christian education, the transgressive mix of religious and sexual themes may provide a great cathartic thrill. However, if you were already paying attention to the punk and Goth rock revolution of the late '70s and early '80s, you'll probably find all of this pretty old-hat: Wayne County or Diamanda Galas approached a lot of the same issues with much greater artistic impact. For those of us not caught up in Catholic or Evangelical theology, it's all one big shoulder shrug. Also: this isn't as "country" as one might hope; Tammy and her boys seem to have been having fun, but it doesn't mean a lot to me. I did enjoy her version of Marshall Chapman's "Don't Make Me Pregnant," the only performance that really stands on it's own, outside of the context of the album.

hands down cd of the year ! hearing her for the 1st time on wfmu 91.1 in n.j.yesterday i bought 3 cd's (1 for me ...2 for friends birthdays, who are just as demented as i am) i laughed , i cried , i gagged ....a beautifully profane , vulgar ,loopy , witty & concise masterpiece of 21st century americana. I LOVE HER !(great guitar playing to boot)

Few collections are so aptly titled as The Golden Harvest, a rich survey of Shaker songs, chants, and spirituals dating from the mid-19th century. The music often recalls the shapes and cadences of English folksong, while its unaccompanied, unison performance tradition connects with medieval chant. Thirty-eight selections are partitioned into groups according to subject: there are songs about birds, heavenly spirits, and the all-important harvest. Joel Cohen, who transcribed much of this music from old manuscripts, mixes and matches performers drawn from the Boston Camerata in solo and group settings to ensure maximum timbral and expressive variety. Shaker Music at its best.......2002-03-18

For authenticity and variety, this is one of the best albums available. It includes both well-known and new songs done in proper Shaker tempo using voices alone to convey the feelings reflected in the songs. The comments by the Shakers regarding their thoughts about their music gives a special touch to the album. This album, along with the earlier one titled "Simple Gifts", is a worthwhile addition to any collection.

Simply Beautiful.......2000-12-02

The Boston Camerata is characteristically superb in interpreting this new collection of 19th century Shaker spirituals. Like their previous recording of Shaker songs, "Simple Gifts," the Camerata captures the hope and humility of Shaker belief, performing with bouyant movement and emotional clarity. By dividing the songs into thematic sections however, this CD is untimately stronger and more consistent than the latter. The Native American songs are particulary unique and the addition of a youth choir and the Shakers brothers and sisters add a freshness and reality to the smooth as silk voices of the ever professional Camerata. The tunes sound like a combination of folk and traditional protestant church music, but the lyrics reveal many elements of Shaker theology, some quaint, some still as revolutionary as they must have seemed in 1830. This CD offers an inspirational experience no matter what your religious background, the perfomances transcend definition.

One of the Best Christian Cds of All Time.......2006-09-01

Susan Ashton and producer Wayne Kirkpatrick team up again and hit it out of the park. Kirkpatrick wrote most of the songs on the cd and Ashton sings them with everything she has.

Standout tracks include the rocking 'Here in my Heart', the teary 'Grand Canyon', the humbling 'Better Angels of our Nature' and the toe-tapping 'Walk on By'.

The cd is filled with songs concerning our closeness to God, the temptation to sin and to judge, and the fragileness of our humanity. Great songs sung by one of the greatest singers in Christian music.

Excellent from start to finish.

A CCM album for the ages... .......2006-05-17

I started listening to contemporary Christian music seriously at the time this album came out. It is my favorite Susan Ashton album (Wakened By The Wind is a close second). It is an essential ccm album for any collection.
Songwriter/producer Wayne Kirkpatrick is her partner here. What a collaberation it is! His songwriting and production are absolutely phenominal.
Here In My Heart is a great opener. Grand Canyon is a gorgeous soaring ballad. Started As A Whisper and Better Angels Of Our Nature provide some edge and keep the album from getting too "soft". There aren't really any clinkers on this disc so there shouldn't be too much reaching for the skip button.
Susan has one of the most beautiful, expressive voices in creation. These days she's working as a nanny and enjoying working with kids. Selfishly, I hope she comes back to make at least one more good album at some point. We can always use some good songs from an artist like Susan. These days we need the reassurance. In the meantime, pick up Angels Of Mercy and enjoy.

Bigger beat for Ashton's sophomore CD.......2005-03-03

Although it won't be mistaken for rock, Ashton adds some new flavour to her sonics this time out, letting electric guitar play a bigger part than on her debut. It also landed 4 chart hits with "Here in My Heart" (#3),"Grand Canyon"(#17),"Hunger and Thirst"(#20), and "Walk on By" (#6).

Best cuts this time out are pop-rocker "Here in my Heart" (covered by country singer Martina McBride on the "Evolution" album, ASIN:B000002X49), the "God big, us small" ballad "Grand Canyon" (covered later by country singer Kathy Mattea on her "Walking Away a Winner" CD, ASIN:B000001E2L), the scathing diatribe against holier than thou types of "Started with a Whisper", world-weary lament "When are You Coming Back?", acceptance that life isn't clearcut even when you walk with Jesus (the Billy Sprague co-penned "Alice in Wonderland") and the dark side of growing older. ("Innocence Lost")

The only weak tune on here is "Let me Go", which is pleasant but not really memorable.

A big step forward for Ashton.......

Still Wonderful After All These Years.......2004-01-28

Isn't it funny how some songs come to represent a time in our lives? For me, this entire CD always brings back memories of summer 1994. I bought the CD in May of that year and listened to it almost non-stop going to and from my summer job. To this day, every time I stick it in, I'm transported back to that summer.

Fortunately, that was a good summer because I still love this CD. Susan Ashton had a way of picking songs that spoke directly to me and still seem to do so.

The CD opens with the only song she co-wrote, the wonderful "Here in My Heart" reminding us that God is patiently waiting for us no matter what is happening in our lives. "Grand Canyon" was another classic from this album that made an analogy about the distance that can seem to develop between us and God. A personal favorite is the tug of war captured so eloquently in "Innocence Lost." The power of gossip is tackled in "Started as a Whisper." Susan Ashton loved to pick songs with literary illusions in the title and that continued on this CD with "Alice in Wonderland," talking about facing the difficulties in life even if we don't want to. "Walk on by" is a fun warning about giving into temptation. And I always loved the closing ballad "Let Me Go."

Even after 10 years, I still pull this CD out on a regular basis, and the songs seem as fresh now as they did then. While I love Susan's other CD's, this is still my favorite. A definite classic of Christian music from the early 90's.

This CD & hardbound book combination is a wonderful view into the historic Russian Orthodox faith for the English speaker, the thesis of which builds off the Eastern understanding that an icon represents an invisible spiritual reality, the Church on earth is an icon of the heavenly church and that liturgical chant is an Icon (or image) of the angelic singing. These then, are in "divine harmon" as to how they work together to engage the faithful in the ascent to heaven. The CD is comprised of selections from the series of recordings by Anatoly Grindenko and the Russian Patriarchate Choir, and one portion of the book includes an essay by Anatoly Grindenko, and liner notes and complete hymn text in English. The other portion of the book is written by Russian iconographer Adolf Ovchinnikov, and explains the history and development of icons and their use in the Christian faith. It is comprised of a series of essays that have been translated into English, with copious! full-color icons representing ancient to recent icons, many previously unpublished (from St. Catherine's Monastery in Sinai, The Hermitage, the Byzantine Museum in Athens, and others). Is this album for real? How come it's labeled as "Holy Hip Hop"? Richard Jackson has stumbled on to a hit album, It sounds better than most rap albums out today without even trying to."Ghettos To The Pearly Gates" is THE standout song on the album, The lyrics are totally slammin' and the music is tight as hell,(Can I say that?) "Angels Of Mercy" should be pumped by every "Thug", "Hustler" and their momma's.Another song on the album that is REALLY smooth is "The Story Of Acts", as you listen,it will feel like your right there in the mix of it all.Don't get me wrong now, the rest of the song's are just as tight such as "Hypnosis" and "I Got Jesus", They Just make you feel GOOD! Richard Jackson should be Blowin'Up real soon ,(he's already been #1 on "Mp3.com","Heaven1580 radio" in washington D.C & On "Gospel1480 radio" in San Antonio Texas).So go Pick up this album RIGHT NOW! This kid is on THE RISE. PEACE!

The album "Angels Of Mercy" is what the gospel world really is lacking in way of expression & creative flow.The first song "Ghettos To The Pearly Gates" (Which was #1 on Mp3.com for several weeks)Is a instant ear catcher that makes even the hardest hip hop head groove .The lyrics are on point & the music is slammin'.The song that stands out the most has to be "The Story Of Acts" Once again the lyrics are truly the bomb digga & it seems you can almost listen & read it from the bible at the same time.The rest of the song's won't let you down either, they really flow with the entire album.While most gospel rap artist try to please the church community, Richard Jackson let's them know as long as we have flesh were ALL able to slip up (Check out "Revelations").This Album ain't for the SAVED anyway it's really for the SINNER (Which is most of us).So let's get hip to the way's of our Lord and nod our heads at the same time, "Angels Of Mercy" is our HOLY HIP HOP TRAIN that's come in, CHOO!
