The hip-hop producer extraordinaire tackles Blue Note's soul-jazz catalog on his latest project, given free reign to rummage around the fabled label's vaults. On one level, the project makes perfect sense given Madlib's Yesterday's New Quintet work--he clearly has an ear for the Blue Note jazz aesthetic. The remixes and reinventions here are mostly pleasant and even surprising at times--get down with "Mystic Bounce," a flip on Ronnie Foster's "Mystic Brew." Yet, some of these tracks seem a little too casual and undercooked, making Shades of Blue feel a bit too much like just another Madlib side project. In fact, Blue Note had already done a better job with this very same concept on their largely forgotten 1996 New Groove compilation, where artists such as Large Professor and the Roots took their stabs at the label's catalog. --Oliver Wang

Album Description

Shades of Blue opens with the declaration that "We are now having a little cooking session for Blue Note right here on the scene..." Madlib was afforded the opportunity to mine the crates of Blue Note. On Shades of Blue, Madlib delivers remixes and brand spanking new interpretations of Blue Note classics. Whether funking out Ronnie Foster's original "Mystic Brew" and transforming it into the "Mystic Bounce," or giving Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" a go with Yesterday's New Quintet, rest assured that Madlib's innovative sonic vocabulary will fill the ears. Other artists receiving a Madlib reimagination include Donald Byrd, Bobbi Humphrey, Bobby Hutcherson, Horace Silver, The Three Sounds and many more.

I don't know what to say but good and if love jazz with some hip hop you'll most definitely love this cd.

5 out of 5 stars A madlib fan.......2006-04-28

now i can't imagine why anyone would give this less then 4 stars, i gave it five. Now some people who badmouthed this album are obviously not madlib fans cause this album is incredible. Now if you want the origanal blue Note rocordings then go find them(untinted) but this is Madlib's interpratation and just like YNQ stevie album it's a dope hip hop recreation of classic tracks. hands down a must have for madlib fans

4 out of 5 stars After all, it's just a mix album........2006-04-01

This album is a good gateway to Madlib projects like Yesterdays New Quintet. Before letting the next few reviewers get you all worked up about Madlib stealing people's music, consider that alot of hip-hop guys throw mix albums together the same way madlib's done here. As well as some mediocre, re-worked soul-jazz classics, there are some covers by madlib minions like Sound Directions and Yesterday's New Quintet (YNQ's electrified cut of "Footprints" by Wayne Shorter works out well here). I like the re-do of "Stormy" here, but all in all, this is a gateway, nothin more. I do recommend you put it in your collection though, and once you've got your toes in the water, pick up the record "Untinted: Sources for Shades of Blue" which contains all the originals.

5 out of 5 stars An Experimental Must-Have.......2005-05-11

I haven't listend to Madlib since his debut, but from this CD one can truly understand where he comes from and how he grooves. His music is very different from traditional "jazz," and even deviates somewhat from Blue Note's traditional sign-ups. Imagine your soft, mellow jazz fused with a mild hip-hop 'frenzy' (so-to-speak). That's what Madlib has done here.
Do you remember when 'underground' hip-hop was big...back in the day? Songs such as: A Tribe Called Quest - Luck of Lucien, All Natural 50 Years, Asheru - Soon Come (Koolade Remix), Bastie Boys - Sure Shot, Das EFX - Mic Checka (Remix), Pharoahe Monche - The Light, Gangstarr - Moment of Truth, need I go on?
Ok now take those background beats and add them to your traditional soft-jazz song. Bask in the bliss that Madlib delivers in his CD, and don't forget -- appreciate.

5 out of 5 stars Not His Best Album.......2005-03-08

Madlib is incredible at his productions.

Pro: used great samples
Con: not better than the original.

i give it more of a 4.5/5

"Raw blues does not get any better than this"

This is the first time that "Shades of Blue" has been available in the US, newly re-mastered and with 3 previously unreleased tracks!

The album also features a powerhouse of blues talent including: Kim Wilson, Janiva Magness, Finis Tasby, Ronnie James Weber, and more!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Things In Store For This Guitarist!.......2005-07-16

This is a very talented young man who has a great future ahead of him. It's hard to believe he's only in his twenties.

You can hear the influence of B.B. King in his playing and the liner notes confirm that B.B. was and is an inspiration. Make no mistake, this is no mere copycat. Kirk has learned from the masters - including Elmore James (check out "Worried Man Blues") - but he is definitely his own man.

The album is titled "Shades of Blue" and these shades range from songs written by Jimmy Dawkins, Jr. Wells and Magic Sam, to Percy Mayfield. However, These are not the usual covers. Someone certainly gave these choices some thought. There are also a couple of originals showing additional talent as a songwriter. On "Blues for Boo Boo" (his daughter - and I'd love to hear the story behind that nickname) we get a hint that he may also have some jazz in his repertoire. That hint shows up again in "Hip Hug Her".

The vocals are shared by Kim Wilson, along with his oh-so-fine harp, Janiva Magness and Finis Tasby and they give Kirk plenty of room to show his stuff. I particularly enjoyed the vocals of Finis Tasby whose voice and style seem to mesh especially well with Kirk's. I would have liked to have heard a couple more intrumentals. Maybe next time. Meanwhile, I highly recommend this CD and I hope there is more to come soon. Am I raving? Yes I am!

One last note to Riley: Your blues are in good hands!

5 out of 5 stars The blues lives on.......2005-03-29

In a world infatuated with hip hop, young African-American blues guitarists are a rare commodity. Rarer yet are those whose touch, tone, and vibe recall such Chicago blues greats as Buddy Guy, Magic Sam, and Otis Rush in their youth. Meet Kirk Fletcher: Still in his '20s, he plays with the conviction and authority of a seasoned vet, yet burns with a young man's fire. Fletcher favors toothy Strat tones, stinging bends, and flurries of tight, staccato riffs that seem to pop from his fretboard like little firecrackers. His touch is supple and his fingering fluid, yet his phrases never sound slick or contrived. Fletcher and his no-B.S. band cover blues classics by B.B. King, Willie Dixon, and Magic Sam; toss in some R&B (including Percy Mayfield's "The River's Invitation" and a funky take on Booker T. & the MG's "Hip Hug Her"); and cap things off with modern offerings from the likes of the Fabulous Thunderbirds' Kim Wilson. Fresh, vital blues.

5 out of 5 stars A real talent to watch .......2005-02-06

Every now and when someone is able to emerge from the crowd of very good blues musicians out there and demonstrate that he has something special that distinguishes himself. I think that this is exactly the case of Kirk Fletcher. This album is a real gem that shouldn't be missed by any serious blues fan. With the help of veterans like Kim Wilson, Finis Tasby and Janiva Magness sharing vocal duties and the support of a fantastic band Mr. Fletcher delivers 17 strong blues songs that deserve to be listened. His guitar work is outstanding in every track and, even though very close to the style of the great players of the past, he brings something new into the mix. Fantastic tone control and fluid phrasing are, from my point of view, his main assets that together with is innovative way in creating music progression, make his sound fairly unique and very personal. Not a bad tune to be spotted, this is the classic CD that you would listen from start to finish and when it is over, well... you will play it again!

what can I say, is not a great record, for the sound,if you think the next album is vagabonds.... the difference is very big, you will understand only when you listen this album.
I like this album but they have a problems for record this album.

3 out of 5 stars Claim to fame is Jesse James..........2006-07-08

After a very promising debut, Lizzy seemed to take a step back with their March 1972 followup. They seemed to be ready to go in two different directions, straight-up hard rock band, or folk with a tinge of power. On this release they seemed to go more towards the later which is kind of a shame. Not a bad album but as another reviewer also said not particulary memorable. I think it would be hard to include any of these tunes on a Lizzy top 30 but I know how subjective that can be. "Buffalo Gal" is probably the best song but it isn't really a rocker or a ballad in the traditional sense, "Brought Down" is very similiar in the same way. Phillip's first "Sarah" is almost buried by the reoording, forget about listening to this one in the car...it's too damn soft! "Rise and Dear Demise" and "Baby Face" are the best of the "rockers" but again, nothing Lizzy wouldn't blow away on future releases. Case in point, less then a year after this forgettable affair, they released their first single and masterpiece, "Whisky in the Jar/Black Boys on the Corner" - and reputation was secured. I'm not one to quibble about lineups either as each formation of Lizzy provided their own memorable addtions to the catalogue, though 'Shades' was not one for the Eric Bell era. Their next release with the aforementioned single would be Lizzy's first true artistic peak. 'Shades' is a slight misstep. Not bad just not a classic.

5 out of 5 stars Shades of excellence.......2005-09-11

I totally disagree with the previous comment, it is fair to say that the three piece Lizzy and the later jailbreak band were like two different bands, and personally I prefer the original lineup..This album along with Vagabonds, and Lizzy 1 are classics, nuff said...

3 out of 5 stars very good for the 3 piece era of LIzzy........2005-07-21

This is much better than the first album and show much improvement in songwriting for Phil. It's not the Jailbreak
sound you'd expect but if your a fan of the band you'll enjoy
the difference in the first few albums and the later ones. It
took me back the first time I heard them but I enjoy them
much more now. There isn't any new Lizzy to listen to so you
might as well get as much as you can. I love it.

3 out of 5 stars Shades of later albums.......2004-05-28

Thin Lizzy was maturing. SHADES OF A BLUE ORPHANAGE, their second album, occasionally has a harder edge than their impressive debut, but is still miles away from the hard rock sound that would define them in later years. It's a pleasant album, although one that I don't often feel the need to pop into my CD player.

There are a few very notable exceptions, but I mostly think of this as a mellow album with pleasing melodies and reflective lyrics. The words are about growing up, and about cowboys (a lonely lifestyle that songwriter Lynott would return to many times). A few of the songs I find rather forgettable. Not that they're bad, they just aren't great, and I can't really remember anything about them after listening to the album straight through.

That said, when the album hits its mark, it does well. "Call The Police" is a song almost hard enough to sound like something off a later release. "The Rise and Dear Demise of the Funky Nomadic Tribes" is a song with a better title than melody, although it is fun, but goes on for a bit too long. We hear some of Eric Bell's deliberate lead guitar playing on many tracks, and I have kind words for his work on "Buffalo Gal" and "Baby Face". Bell's style is rarely overpowering, so you often have to pay attention to hear the little bells and whistles he's putting into the background. But you'd really miss them if they weren't there.

By far my favorite moment on the album is Phil Lynott doing what appears to be an Elvis Presley impersonation on "I Don't Want To Forget How To Jive". No, it's not as introspective a song as the other tracks, but it is the most fun. Sometimes I'm in the mood for deeper lyrics and thoughtful reflections about growing up. But usually, I just want to remember how to jive. A bit of a mixed bag here, perhaps, but not a totally unworthy one.

Though she's a relative newcomer to recording (Shades of Blue is her third album), Francine Reed has the pipes of an experienced vocalist. Her voice has richness and depth, not to mention versatility; she handles everything from classic jazz ("I Gotta Right to Sing the Blues") to up-tempo blues ("Wrong Man for the Job") to sensual ballads ("A Touch of Love"). She's even got a little bit of rock & roll in "455 Rocket." But it's when she's delivering those shivery, heated love songs that Reed really shines, whether her subject is love lost in "When Love Was New" or love found in "Beyond My Wildest Dreams." There's no doubt that Reed, who toured as part of Lyle Lovett's band for a decade, can carry herself as a solo act, and we can look forward to much more from this fine vocalist. --Genevieve Williams

If you like the blues, you'll love this CD. I first saw Francine Reed in Scottsdale Arizona, in the early 80's. It's good to see someone with real talent be successful. If you pass up this CD, you're missing out on a real treat!

5 out of 5 stars Wow...........I can't say enough good things about this one........2002-04-03

I have played this cd over and over and have yet to tire of it. Even if I get in a mood for something else for a day or two, Francine well be back in the player before the week is out. This has to be one of the best blues/jazz/romantic cd's ever made. I played it for a lady at work, which was a good thing, because she had to have one too! So now I can leave mine at home/car, and listen to hers at work. She's as fond of it as I am!

This CD is fabulous. I've listened to it a hundred times. Other voices pale in comparison. I wish this wasn't her only recording, or I wish some other artist came close to making such fabulous music.

2 out of 5 stars Good group - poor product.......2005-08-29

This is a prime example of the Collectables label putting out a poor quality product just to get an "in demand" group's recordings out. Restore your vinyl before you buy this CD, as the quality is in poor fake stereo, sounds swishy & phasey, plus the rare 45 tracks sound like they were taped off of an old turntable with a remote mic. The material here is half & half, either quite good, or quite weak and ome are simply poor take-offs of "Oh How Happy". I bought this, yet will listen to my restored vinyl instead. Good to see this release, but you'll most likely be disappointed in the sound quality...maybe someday they'll find masters for this.

A Dick Bartley CD has a new stereo version of "Oh How Happy" but I prefer the LP/original single version with substantially more bass/drums. It has a good beat! For some reason this mix has been overlooked by time and present oldies stations and they play a weaker accapella version.

5 out of 5 stars shades of blue : forgotten sixties vocal trio.......2001-04-09

I am a huge fan of the lesser known bands of the 1960s and even though I'm only 17, I know far more about this era than many who lived in it. One of the cd's that I happened to find by accident in an oldies rack was this. Everyone knows the lead-off number "Oh How Happy" from the many plays it has received on oldies radio stations, but even more stunning is the groups vocal wordplay on the minor hits "Happiness" and "Lonely Summer" plus "You Gave Piece Of Mind", "Millionaire" and especialy "Funny Kind Of Love" and my favorite cut "Exception To The Rule" are phenomenal. In fact every track is a masterwork. The singing is the best part and this disc is a must have for anyone who likes testing their vocal range in sing-a-longs.

      Album Description

This CD contains 10 original songs about the American Civil War written by Dave Mathews. As a history teacher Dave used his music to bring the Civil War to life for his students. His passion for our history and his inspiring vocal delivery in this recording have captured the emotion of the Civil War in a way that will never be duplicated. These songs document factual events of the Civil War so it is a fabulous teaching tool and is used by many schools thoughout the US. But don't be fooled into thinking this is a dry, folksy rendering of history. This recording features outstanding performances from Dave Mathews and the wonderful ensemble of talented musicians. Produced by Camelot's own Jan Kurtis Skugstad whose musical production credits include recordings with such artists as Ray Price, John Coltrane, Joe Williams and Ernest Tubb, this recording rivals the Gettysburg movie soundtrack.

If you're looking for a feeble, unoriginal, washed up, overrated classic rocker doing an "unplugged" tribute to Muddy Waters or Robert Johnson, don't buy this CD. The great thing about Al is that he is not just limited to the standard tuned, pentatonic scales over barre chords style of "white boy blues". Al is a true acoustic artist, well versed in many styles including Celtic and Folk. Al is also well versed in multiple alternate tunings which give his playing a rich blend of sounds and a dominance over the fretboard. His blues compositions do show the many Shades. Some of the compositions have a more gutsy/Delta feel, some have a more ragtime feel, some have a bit of a smooth jazz groove, while others have a harder hitting funk rythym. Buy it please.

5 out of 5 stars Al does it again!!!!!.......2003-01-15

Not only is this amazing artist a musical genius, he's an approachable, humble person. He gladly shares insights and techniques with his fans. This CD is a MUST HAVE for anyone who loves Celtic, Blues, Alternative and Jazz. It isn't overdubbed or reverbed, just clean music that makes you feel like you're there while he's creating. It's guaranteed to turn you into a devoted fan. You'll listen in total awe!!!!

      5 out of 5 stars a GREAT guitarist records a GREAT record!!!.......2002-10-02

I have been a fan of AL Petteway's guitar playing for quite some time but this is by far my favorite of his releases....it is all solo acoustic guitar and very very bluesy. I have played this CD many times and hear new favorites each time. Instrumental music like this never ages and is worth the money. His duo CD "Gratitude" is also very very nice.

5 out of 5 stars A new looks at blues........2002-10-02

With Shades of Blue, Al Petteway once again proves why he is one of the finest fingerstyle guitarists and composers. This is not a standard blues CD, although there is plenty of blues and ragtime on it, if that is what you are looking for. Instead, this is a series of compositions in, as the CD's title points out, shades of blue, variations on blues themes.

Al's style is pleasing and clear. His compositions range from enjoyable to moving. He plays with as much heart as he does skill, and his skill is considerable. I have listened to this CD over and over since getting it, and I am still not tired of it.

I particularly enjoy "After Dark", "Smoky Mountain Morning", "Alphonso Brown is Back in Town" (read the liner notes on this one), and the truly moving "Requiem".

The only thing missing from this CD is Amy White, who makes this already great musician even better, more soulful. She is the other half of the orange. That said, this is a great CD and will not disappoint.

5 out of 5 stars Michael Peloquin Blasts!!!!.......2002-11-29

Long-time Bay area sideman Michael Peloquin steps out into the limelight on this, his debut solo CD. Featuring a cast of some of San Francisco's to musicians, including Tommy Castro and Stve Freund, Peloquin absolutely blows the listener away with amazingly tight horn arrangements and a blistering hot rhythm section.

Peloquin shows us unequivacobly that he can sing as well as he plays sax and harmonica. He never overdoes it and any of the songs. The songwriting is worthy of any of the great R&B masters. If you haven't had the chance to tune into Michael Peloquin yet, I definitely suggest that you give this CD a listen.

5 out of 5 stars Oh My Oh My - What a disc!.......2002-05-19

This is a such a good disk I do not know where to begin other than this disk has been played nearly everyday for the past four months. The only other recordings to have this distinction are Miles' Kind of Blue and Coltrane's A Love Supreme.

This recording shows why Michael is considered one of the top harmonica players in the world today. Michael Peloquin's harp technique and musicianship is rivaled by maybe one other harmonica player in the history of the instrument. This guy is definately one of my favorites and that's only part of what he does....his song writing, vocals and sax playing is equally stellar.

From funk to deeply moving blues this disk has it all and I after months of owning this disk I STILL get goosebumps everytime I have it on.

      Michael, you simply rock!

you do not have to be a 20 year veteran San Francisco Bay area
music scene to able tell Michael"Grumpy"Peloquins planet is far
from flat. It's well rounded and filled with intelligent life.
You'll be getting out the "air harmonica" after the first tune.

5 out of 5 stars Don't let the cover mislead you.......2002-04-20

This is a fine, fine collection tunes by one San Francisco's
premier musicians. Michael"Grumpy" Peloquin is a player whose experience shows. I enjoyed his first solo effort throughly.
      Rare skills are on display.

5 out of 5 stars This is a must have........2002-04-12

This CD is a tasty combination of all of Michaels abilities as a
writer, arranger, player and vocalist. His 20 plus years of experience in R&B meld into a CD where every track is fresh, different and exciting.
His harmonica playing especially sets him apart. One listen and you'll see why he earned the title of Hohner World Champion in 1997. Combining a very advanced technique called overblowing, he takes the instrument to new heights.
I would urge everyone to make this CD a part of their collection.
It is always on the top of mine.
