The Greatest Soul Singer.......2006-09-29
Marvin's best live collection to date.......2004-12-21
I was meaning to post something about this great live album some time ago but didn't get a chance to and now that I got a chance to, lemme just say that if it came to great live albums, Marvin definitely gets an A+ for his accomplishments in 1977's "Live at the London Palladium".
Recorded during a tour at the Palladium at London in 1976, a 37-year-old Marvin reportedly still a victim of stage fright managed to make the most confident performer seem chummy and tame. Marvin's emotions always take over in anything he does - be it on a song or on an album or live onstage, where he was considered to be one of the greatest live performers of his generation. Is there no question why?
It's a shame though because people always look up to Michael Jackson for his stage dynamics and yet he always rely on "The Moonwalk" or any dance move so he can't sing. Marvin was definitely the anthesis (sp?) of all of that. Unlike Ashlee Simpson and Lindsey Lohan and other "lip-synchers" out there, Marvin Gaye was an actual SINGER. He didn't have to rely on no back track to prove he was GREAT. And back then if you couldn't sing to save your life, you would be yanked off the stage so how come they're not doing it now?
And it's another shame that this album or any other Marvin Gaye album pre-1982 didn't get Grammy recognition! Again, it goes to show you how critics can be so shady.
Anyway, Marvin shines through this emotionally-charged performance. Whether he turns it out in "Let's Get It On" or he takes us on a trip down memory lane on some joints back in the '60s or if he lets us remember how great "What's Going On" was or his great period of making duets or the fabulous show-stopping rendition of "Distant Lover", you know that no other artist in soul or pop music or rock music can come close to his magic.
And just when he's done, he comes even harder with "Got to Give It Up". Off the record, it's one of the greatest dance/funk records of all time. Without this joint, Michael Jackson's adult solo career probably wouldn't have happened (i.e., "Don't Stop 'til You Get Enough", "Shake Your Body Down to the Ground")... and it wasn't just James or Sammy who gave Michael a little help. Marvin needs his respect, y'all.

The master's best live album........2004-08-03
I don't particularly like having the incomparable WHAT'S GOING ON songs crowded into one slightly rushed medley (these classics definitely deserve equal time), however the "Save The Children" finale does pack an unbeatable punch. The only real negative to the set is the horrendous "duets" medley, with the awful Florence Lyles butchering some truly great songs. PALLADIUM also contains the full-length 11 minute version of the hit "Got To Give It Up" (#1 Pop, #1 R&B), which is one of the greatest dance anthems to emerge from the disco area. The success of the single helped propel this disc all the way to #3 on the Hot 200, making it Marvin's second most commercially successful album behind LET'S GET IT ON..

Marvin the Great.......2005-05-17
Solid, if predictable, live set........2004-08-03
Distant Lover!.......2003-11-19
Peformance ****, Recording has some techinal flaws.......2003-10-28
Marvin Gaye was never completely comfortable on stage. His vocals here rarely rises to the full zenith witness on vinly. But then again by the time of "Let's Get it On", Gaye had adopted a laid-back approach(which latter on influenced Frankie Beverley) to his music and it is very evident on this live recording.
Highlights on the album are "Trouble Man", "Distant Lover" and '60's medley suite. The two big hits are nothing special and pale considerably to the studio versions.
For the most part the audio quality is fine, if not a little "too sweet". But even this new remastered CD contains the same annoying mic feedbacks found on the orignal LP.

Product Description
To Motown founder Berry Gordy, the Copa was a destination. The mere concept that a roster of black artists from inner-city Detroit who had a few teen hits would perform there, release albums recorded there and be accepted and return there was a revolutionary thought. And it happened. Marvin wanted to be the Motown crooner, to sit on a stool and purr love songs like Perry Como, Nat and Sinatra. When he got his shot, over the first two weekends of August 1966 during a dry hits period Marvin was game but ambivalent: he chafed at the choreography, prepared little stage patter, wavered a bit during the first set. But reviews were generally good, and Motown sent an eight-track reel-to-reel tape recorder the second weekend to record five shows. Marvin Gaye At The Copa was slated to be released in early 1967, with catalog number Tamla 273, and Motowns art department mocked up a cover. It never happened. The shows were never mixed down for staff review. Marvin never returned to the Copa. Until right now. Hip-O Selects edition represents the best of those shows. Since Marvin didnt do the exact same set every night, now you can feel like you went to every one. Newly and painstakingly remixed, the Select version runs twice as long as what the original LP may have been. Marvin is amped from the opening number, getting the audience involved during How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You), and making the ladies swoon during the sexy Brazilian number, Laia Ladia (Reza). His ballads are breathtaking, especially Night Song, taken from Sammy Davis Jr.s Broadway show Golden Boy. He takes on Sinatra, re-interpreting Strangers In The Night, which then was a #1 hit for the Chairman. The Motown Medleys are also a lot of fun, as they include (brief) live versions of his songs he rarely did live and hits by other Motown artists. The Copacabana Orchestra, conducted by Motowns Maurice King, kicks butt from start to finish.

LIVE IN MONTREUX.......2007-01-10
Keep listening..........2003-08-30
it's Marvin Gaye. When Marvin Gaye is really doing his thing, he reaches
an incredible level of emotional communication, as demonstrated by Live, the London Palladium show and the Washington D.C. concert that makes up the 2nd disc of the expanded What's Going On. If you really want to understand what makes Marvin Gaye so incredible you need to dig deep the 60's hits and the 70's concept albums and THEN check out
the man delivering it live. I enjoy this album, but if you want to experience the "live" Marvin Gaye, you really owe it to him and yourself to keep listening to him...elsewhere!
