Russel Allen is without a doubt one of the most powerful singers of our times, and Michael Romeo is pure genius in how he has crafted this album and he slays on his guitar! Every song is great and their sound is more powerful than ever before. They are the best progressive metal act today and now officially blow Dream Theater away....

Russell Allen Truly Shines Here.......2007-07-26

It is not hyperbole to declare that 'Paradise Lost' was worth the five-year wait, and nearly a month since I purchased it remains in heavy rotatation on my MP3 player. Few bands have the kind of staying power that allows them to take that amount of time off and still be relevant, or have as loyal a fan base. Then again, Symphony X has always appealed to literary maven in me, from V: The New Mythology Suite, (based on the myth of Atlantis) to The Odyssey (Homer would have loved these guys), and I've adored them not only for making great albums, but for treating the listeners like intelligent human beings.

This is NOT a remake of 'The Odyssey', so don't expect it. 'Paradise Lost' is darker, richer and deeper in tone and texture, including the artwork (which is worth the price alone). From the sweeping 'Oculus Ex Inferni', which opens this grand epic depicting Lucifer's rebellion against God, to the blistering 'Set the World On Fire/The Lie of Lies', to the heartrending Revelation (Divus Ex Pennae Tragoedia), it's cinema of the mind done through music, and what music it is. I do believe that John Milton would indeed be proud.

It seems that most of the reviewers are budding guitar gods, which is why they focus on the almost inhuman stylings of Michael Romeo (and believe me, they ARE simply jaw-dropping--does the guy have extra fingers on his hands?), I'm all about vocals and personally, it's Russell Allen's intense vocals that really stand out here and showcases his incredible range. For some fans, the heaviness Allen uses here may be somewhat disconcerting, but for the overall theme of the album, it's perfect. While we're not talking unintelligible death-metal growls, it is a much darker and harsher sound. However, Russell Allen is the ultimate actor, managing to convey the seductive evil of ultimate power. He's both wicked and alluring as he snarls with fiendish venom: "I will forsake you/destroy and unmake you/with all my might/I will take you down..." His delivery reminds me of Jon Oliva's Mephisto from 'Beethoven's Last Night'. Of course, Allen does go softer on such tracks as `Paradise Lost' (my other favourite) and `Revelation' (I love the ending which incorporated melodic lines from Divine Wings of Tragedy--it's a trope that I've noticed most progressive/power metal bands seem to use).

There's nothing else to say except that I truly LOVE this album and can't wait to see them live. This is American Power Metal at its finest!

This First Release Shines.......2007-03-16

I recently became a John Mayer fan after purchasing "Continuum" so, naturally, I had to check out his earlier releases. I purchased "Room for Squares" next and realized I had heard "No Such Thing" before and just didn't realize who the artist was behind the music. But my favorites turned out to be "Neon", "83", and "City Love". I then purchased "Heavier Things" and jumped back to the present to purchase "The Village Sessions". The latter really shows off John's wonderful acoustic ability; so when I heard about "Inside Wants Out" showcasing his earlier acoustic works, I had to get it. As a first, independent effort, this CD really shines. Although his vocals aren't as polished as in later efforts, the music and lyrics are very engaging. There is the feel that John is playing just for you while sitting on a porch step and watching that willow tree in the yard sway on a warm summer night. My favorites are "Victoria", "Neon", and "Quiet"; but every song is a nice little treat. As another reviewer noted, "My Stupid Mouth" comes off much better than on "Room for Squares"; and "Neon" is just a great song so it sounds equally good acoustically as it does with backing instrumentals. Like that quiet little movie that is often called a 'sleeper' hit, that's how I would describe "Inside Wants Out". It's definitely a 'must have' for any Mayer fan who wants to dig deeper into John's musical roots.

Raw Talent At Its Best.......2007-02-17

I bought this after reading the Amazon reviews, and couldn't be happier with the album.

My respect for Mayer really hit its peak with Continuum, but I've since ordered Inside Wants Out, Any Given Thursday and the Try! John Mayer Trio concert CDs, due to a new insatiable appetite for more.

This early release showcases his formidable skills in all its raw glory. Acoustic albums are always the most challenging, with little backup to camouflage flaws, exposing the artiste's vocal and instrumental gifts ( or lack thereof ) to their fullest.

While his studio recordings are pretty slick -- with Mayer sounding a little kiddish, if you ask me -- this totally-stripped-bare version is a huge improvement. The voice is more mellow and adult, the deliveries significantly more emotionally nuanced, the guitar solos absolutely divine.

Songs not included in his more commercial offerings -- Victoria, Love Soon, Quiet -- are introspective and haunting, while acoustic renditions of My Stupid Mouth and Neon got me hitting the repeat button time and time again.

A definite must have whether you're a Mayer fan or not.

Even though this CD is not that long and has several songs release on his debut album, this is a must have for all fans to see the progression of this truly talented musician.

Better than the Arctic Monkeys.......2007-06-09

I heard "She Moves in Her Own Way" on the radio one day and had to find out who sang it. Already owned the Arctic Monkeys CD and heard the Kooks compared to them, so I gave it a shot and ordered the CD instead of downloading one song. I was not disappointed. I think the whole CD is more vibrant, less pompous and a lot more fun to listen to than Arctic Monkeys -- which I also did like. "Naive" is a standout, and I even like the more throwaway songs like "Seaside." One of the best CDs I've bought in the past year.

Best New Brit Album - The Past Decade.......2007-03-10

These guys are amazing. There are literally 10 solid tracks on this disc. A friend of mine told me NOT to buy the CD but to simply pay for each song that I liked on iTunes or another Music Service.

After getting my order from Amazon, I quickly told him he was crazy. When you buy just a few songs you don't get the cover with the lyrics and info about the band. Sorry. I have an MP3 player but will still buy great music on CD, especially if it's a band like the Kooks. Good stuff. And this was their debut album - can't wait to see what they do for an encore.

choosen as the eleventh best album of 2006 by "Q" magazine, this is a fine gathering of fifteen power pop tracks. tuneful melodies performed with energy and joy, this is an all around winner for pop-rock lovers. supergrass fans in particular should find much to appeal to their sensiblities here. very well done stuff.

Theres not enough cliches to describe the level of depth and virtuosity that this band has attained. Virgil gets the MVP award in my book. His playing is simply beyond everyone else on a drumkit. His compositions are futuristic and mind bending, both literally and metaphorically. Every player in the band is at the top of his game, Quantum will be THE CD that will make waves in the prog/metal universe this year.

How Could This Band Get Any Better!.......2007-07-02

Definately the best Planet X album so far. Absolutely Stunning! Put on your headphones and get ready to travel the Universe! Derek Sherinian is the best keyboard player on Earth. The only drawback to this record is that the Great Allan Holdsworth should have had alot more playing time.

Many thanks to Planet X for another ride in their universe of very different and interesting music. This album is a breath of fresh air. I own all of PX albums and I follow them since their first output "Universe". I find this as one of the most focused efforts of theirs. First of all I prefer Garsed to Macalpine on the guitar chair. I think Brett fits better this kind of "alien" music even if Tony played very well on the other releases from the band. Rumors are that for the next chapter the band will have Greg Howe on board. I hope it could be true because Greg is probably the biggest gun in these territories. Holdsworth plays here just a couple of solos, they are nice but don't change the overall feel of the music ... Brett contributes a lot more. What you can find here are a lot of dispair times at the point that sometimes you lose the guys. It is very funny and interesting. If you are a musician you have a lot to think about here rhytmically. If you are not, don't worry because the music is really entertaining if you love this style (metal plus fusion I may say). I really appreciate Virgil Donati's drumming. Sometimes I find myself focusing on his playing and wow, I have to say that he's incredible. I hope this band will release more albums in this area ... I think it is something new and that this style has the potentials to be something even more interesting in the future. But this Quantum is already a very nice album that I find myself listening over and over. Even better than Moonbabies if you want. Bravo to the guys, Brett and Virgil in particular.

Their Best Yet.......2007-06-13

This is by far Planet X's best effort to date.
Worth the wait since the last release, Derek Sherinian, Virgil Donati and guests do an unbelievable job.
Alan Holdsworth, Rufus Philpot and Brett Garsed do outstanding work on guitar, while keyboardist Sherinian and drummer Donati give their usual great performances.
This is one of the year's best in progressive rock so far.

Album Description

"Everything Is Illuminated" is the directorial debut of actor Liev Schrieber and an adaptation of Jonathan Safran Foer's best-selling novel. A blend of high comedy and great tragedy, the film tells the story of a young American man, played by Elijah Wood (The Lord of The Rings trilogy), who journeys to the Ukraine to find the woman whom he believes saved his grandfather from the Nazis all those years ago.

The soundtrack features two new songs from high energy New York City based gypsy punks Gogol Bordello, including one track not on their current cd. (Note: Gogol Bordello's lead singer plays a role in "Everything Is Illuminated"). Also included are gypsy folk songs from Russia and the Ukraine by Leningrad, Arkadie Severmie, Csokolom and Tin Hat Trio. And finally, Paul Cantelon's ethnic score ties together this nicely cohesive soundtrack.

This is an amazing soundtrack that highlights the two prevalent emotions in the film: hilarity and tragedy. Paul Cantelon deftly mixes an Eastern European feel with pure, gorgeous soundtrack music. Along for the ride are songs by genuinely fun and original bands. I never get tired of it. Sometimes, indeed, there are tracks I can't listen to simply because they're too sad - but then I switch to the upbeat, funny tunes, which always manage to entertain.

1. Odessa Medley: 9/10 - Enjoyable, with fun instruments. It builds up into an intricate array of instruments and melodies, and really picks up at the end, tempting you to let it sweep you along into the movie's crazy world. A great overture to the movie.
2. Leningrad, Zvezda Rok-N-Rolla: 8/10 - Oh, the drama! Leningrad is a Russian band. All of their songs on this album are crazy and fun and fit the craziness of the movie to a T. The horns are wonderful.
3. Csokolom, Amari Szi Amari: 10/10 - Superbly catchy, with that quirky, old feel dominant in the film, this song is a laidback sort of fun. It's the only song on the album not in Ukrainian, Russian, or English: it's Hungarian. This doesn't matter, however, because it fits so perfectly with the feel of the movie.
4. Leningrad, Dikiy Muzhchina: 10/10 - I LOVE this song. It's one my favorites here. The title means "Wild Man" in Russian, and it is definitely a very wild and (dare I say it again?) fun song. The lyrics really are just plain fun to sing along to, even if you don't speak Russian. You can practically feel the energy. In fact, I just now started to sing to it again...
5. Prologue/Babushka: 9.5/10 - This is where a darker mood begins to edge in. It sinks into a waltz that is more bittersweet than tragic, and then slows down to make way for a sweeping, haunting tune. Lovely.
6. Little Jonathan/The Wall: 9/10 - Playful, but once more in a bittersweet sort of way. After awhile it switches gears, swooshing up with energy, befores changing back to that haunting feeling of "Babushka" that I like to think of as simply The Past.
7. Gogol Bordello, Bublitschki: 8/10 - Time for some fun again. This instrumental piece by an immensely talented band (actually, Eugene Hutz, who plays Alex, is the lead singer of Gogol Bordello) mixes an irresistible beat with a traditional Slavic sound.
8. The Con Artists, Peter Miser, Ya-takoy: 9/10 - This definitely brings one back to the silliness of Alex in the beginning of the film. With snippets of his unbelievably hilarious dialogue and an urban beat going in the background, you'll be sucked right in.
9. Leningrad, Malen'kiy Mal'chik: 9/10 - Great fun! Leningrad never fails to entertain with this lazy collection of horns and vocals.
10. Tin Hat Trio, Fear of the South: 8/10 - Here's a piece to relax to. It's lighthearted and fresh.
11.Paul Cantelon, River of Collections: 9/10 - With breathy strings, "River of Collections" urges you quietly but with instistence along the river of The Past.
12. Paul Cantelon, Tank Graveyard/Valse de Suzana/Dee-yed: 9.5/10 - Here is the tragedy I've been referring to. It's sad. Almost unbearably so. It sweeps you up in the conflict of the characters, teasing you with peaks at the truth before fading back into the darkness.
13. Paul Cantelon, Sunflowers: 10/10 - Ukrainian, I believe. Haunting, with strong vocals that cast a spell.
14. Paul Cantelon, War Is Love/eta-Ya: 9.5/10 - It begins with lazy simplicity, but toward the end bursts into a powerful and urgent message.
15. Paul Cantelon, Trachimbrod/Ressurection/Requiem: 10/10 - Simply beautiful. About halfway through, the urgency of the previous tracks finally builds up for the climax, whooshing over you bitterly, sadly, and with almost a sense of determination. Again, it's tragic. You don't hear the lightheartedness of previous tracks, but the slight nudging of a past that doesn't want to haunt: it just wants to resolve itself. To exist.
16. Paul Cantelon, Inside-Out: 10/10 - And it does resolve itself. Here is another bittersweet piece. But this time, it carries a touch of enlightenment (illumination?) with it.
17. Gogol Bordello, Start Wearing Purple: 10/10 - This was the absolutely most perfect song the movie could have ended with. It switches the film seamlessly back into that feel of silly hilarity, single-handedly managing to leave the audience uplifted - a sore necessity for such a partly bleak film!

Overall, one of my favorite soundtracks out there. Whether you've seen the (remarkable) movie or not, get this! It is gorgeous, beautiful, fantastic, powerful, uplifting, and itching to tell you something you've known all your life but just can't quite grasp. In short, a brilliant piece of work.

Elijah Wood was surprising in his portrayal of the main charecter, who is a bit of a "nebish" or dweeb, and a collector of multitudenous often unthinkable items. His search of his family's past which takes him to the Ukraine, and the people he meets are
funny, amusing and often very moving. It's got a shocking thread to it,
but not without humor. I also liked the surprise ending. The music was great!

Redemption was founded in Los Angeles in 2000 by guitarist, keyboardist and songwriter Nicolas van Dyk. Ray Alder of Fates Warning joined them and they released two metal albums of melodic complexity. Ok sorry, now for the review....lol. This CD is incredible!! Ray Alder should "Leave the Past Behind" with Fate's and stick with this project fulltime. Redemption's lyrics and song composistions IMO is better than current D.T.M. albums.

Redemtion is a band following in the footsteps of a great band like Dream Theater.Though not as complex,they are in their own way a very tight and amazing band! While I don't have the first 2 albums yet,The Origins of Ruin is getting played alot alongside the new Dream Theater.I can't wait to see them live with DT in Houston on Aug.3.
I recomend anyony who is into prog metal to pick this cd up,it's a great album with alot of different aspects of the prog genre intertwined!Plus Ray Adler of Fates Warning is singing!I wish Fates sounded this good!

Pleasant (and intense) surprise........2007-06-29

I was very disappointed with the first two (overrated) Redemption releases, but this is stellar. Far more inspired and interesting than the relatively mundane earlier efforts. The songwriting has matured, while Alder's melodic vocals float atop intense, addictive riffs and intricate polyrhythms. The newfound complexity and polish has this in the running for a top 3 prog album of the year.

Far better than anything Redemption has done to date and superior to anything Fates Warning has released since the incomparable aPSoG.

this album is great, i bought my copy a few weeks ago and i have been enjoying it sinse. the vocalist is very good. so dont listen to the review some moron wrote. and the musicianship is outstanding. very tight and very catchy. heavy and melodic perogressive madness! and what a great drummer! also full of great memorible guitar melodies, leads, and agressive and beautiful soaring solos. so i highly recommend this album, to prog fans and even just good old metal heads that like good musicianship. fans of dream theater, symphony x, or even bands like soilwork and mercenary will enjoy this!

This blew me away. It's totally original, it's filled with real / true emotion, and is highly inspirational. Outside of the deep lyrical content, the guitar solos / arrangements are what really moved me. Whether you want to lable Riverside as a Metal band, or a Progressive band, one thing is certain, they compose their music from the heart. You can literally feel the music here, and because of it's pureness, it pulls you in....

I can't recommend "Second Life Syndrome" highly enough. Simply stated, Riverside is awesome, and "SLS" is a masterpiece that should not be overlooked. Buy it with confidence.....

Riverside, what a band! The first cd was a work of art. This one doesn't disappoint but is a little weaker than the first masterpiece. The band doesn't change its sound but it doesn't deliver the same punch. Don't get me wrong! This creation is another great effort. I tip my hat to Riverside, and am hoping to get yet another great masterpiece in the near future.

Stirring, moving and highly emotional arrangments all through this cd make it a classic piece of work. Mariusz Duda's voice captivates and pulls you into each song. I'm a big fan of "epic" long songs and Second Life Syndrome is one of coolest ones ever. Beautifully morphing from highs and lows and back again. Buy it for this song alone. Let's hope that this group stays together for a long time for they have so much to offer to prog music.

This album is breath-taking. The economy of music is well distributed to serve the emotional landscape of the album. Really, this guys from Poland are on point. The singer really gets you into the ambient mood. Its just sound like good music to me.

The music on this CD is really good; the guys in Symphony X are very talented. However, I outgrew all that jazz and nonsense about dragons and mystical eyes many years ago. I really don't like the lyrics on this CD. If I were to recommend better progressive rock music to listen to, I would say you should check out EVERYTHING that DREAM THEATER has ever done!

Ok, this was my intro to Symphony X, and an unexpected one.

It turned out to be one of those rare finds, the kind that stay in your mp3 player weeks on end.

Many of the other reviewers have covered this as well as I could. I just wish this band had better recognition in the States, they really deserve it on many levels - the musicianship, the music, the vocals, each and every member is a star and stands out.

For those that would dismiss this as another million-notes-a-minute act, there is really much, much more to these guys. The only thing I criticize them on is their limited catalog, and lack of a good DVD - bring more of it on guys, your break is coming!

But careful of this as your first SX album, it's great, and others are really good, but this is a tough act to follow.

Different bonus track for Japan.......2007-01-10

First off, this is a very good album, probably my 2nd favorite CD of the band beside "Divine Wings.....". The opening track Inferno (Unleash The Fire) might be one of the best power (not prog) metal songs of all-time, as Russell Allen sings his arse off. The Accolade II is better than the first (off of "Divine Wings....."), in my opinion. The re-make of Masquerade is infinitely better than the original, off of their first album. The title track is obviously very long, but is brilliant in some spots, and keeps your interest all the way through.

Anyway, just wanted to let you guys know there is a Japanese issue of this CD which has a 10th song, titled "Frontiers". It is very hard to find, but the song is nothing to write home about.

An Epic Journey!.......2007-07-03

Thanks to s friend at my college for constantly bugging me to check out Symphony X, I have become a pretty big fan. I was able to get my hands on a copy of what many call their masterpiece "The Divine Wings Of Tragedy!" I'll be honest, this album in my opinion is one of the most epic pieces of art I have ever heard; and for me, ranks right behind "The Odyssey" as my favorite Symphony X album.

1. Of Sins And Shadows - This is just an amazing way to begin an album. Harmonizing vocals of heavy and rough, mixed with a higher tone make for a very melodic feel. The backing choir vocals also give it a very Bohemian feel (very Queen like). Awesome guitar work, tying the whole song together. Amazing! 5/5

2. Sea Of Lies - Keeping right with that feel, this track kicks in and pulls no punches. Again just awesome seemless instrumental work by the band fully harmonizing with the vocals. 5/5

3. Out Of The Ashes - I love this song. To me it seems to have a very deep meaning, but has an upbeat rocking way of making that message prominent. The backing vocals really add the element of having an "epic" feel to it, and again the guitar work is top notch. So far the band keeps the perfect score going! 5/5

4. The Accolade - This is the song that sold me on the album. After hearing part two on "The Odyssey" I knew I had to hear what they called part one. I was not disappointed in the least. Starting off slow and melodic, the song picks up steadily throughout. Awesome vocals and powerful lyrics, mixed with amazing instrumental work, make this song alone a classic! 5/5

5. Pharaoh - This is the first song on the album that took me more than one listen to really get into. A heavy tune to pick up where "The Accolade" leaves off. Heavy riffs and deep vocals make this song very prominent. May take a couple listens to like, but is a very cool song. 4.5/5

6. The Eyes Of Medusa - This track keeps right on pace with "Pharaoh." Heavy riffs mixed with very soft, yet very vibrant instrumentals. A lot of what the band does well is seen in this track. Like the previous track, it may take awhile to get into, but this song rocks. Very heavy and very dark! 5/5

7. The Witching Hour - This song is another very melodic output by the band. However, to me it seems just a bit rushed and cramped with a lot of material. Not a bad song at all, but a bit off kilter with the rest of the album. 4/5

8. The Divine Wings Of Tragedy - Ah, the epic of the album. A song in which the rest of the album was merely prepping you for. This song is a journey all its own! I love the beginning of the song esspecially, it is very different from any music you hear today. Very melodic and somewhat soothing! Than, enter the heavy power of Symphony X! Overall, a seven-part epic that will make you stand at attention and truly appreciate hat a masterpiece this album really is! 5/5

9. Candlelight Fantasia - I would call this a bonus track after the masterpiece beforehand. Again, the band shows no signs of slowing down in terms of having a lsting impact in their music! Love the melody and overall tone this song has, adding to an already steller album! 4.5/5

Overall, this album is a MUST HAVE for any and all fans of both Symphony X and/or Progressive Metal! In my opinion this album is one of those rare masterpieces that come along once every 10-12 years! Just pure brilliance!

Symphony X's finest moment is right here, one of those albums where you press play (or whatever your mp3 player uses as a play button) and let it flow. Even the 20-minute plus title track is excellent, and keeps you interested all the way. I'm a fan of power/prog metal, and I own the catalogues of bands like Dream Theater, Artension, Stratovarius, etc. This is my favorite of the bunch.

Symphony X - simply they rock, and this is a must have disc.

For any review to be honest you have to give the good with the bad, so lets get the bad out of the way first. The guitar tones get on my nerves after a while (borrowed straight from Diamond Dave). There is only so much my ear can take of that extremely heavy tone, it would be nice if it was mixed up a bit. Second - Like most bands they tend to take a rif or two, or an idea that has already been done before and make it theirs, For me not a big deal but worth mentioning in a review.

Now the good - Even with my previous comments I think they deserve a 5 and I believe this CD is a must have for anyone serious about their progressive metal collection.

The Vocals are that perfect blend of hard edge without that stupid (Grover) growl crap. This guy can actually sing. In my opinion he is one of the better metal singers - up there with the likes of Dio and the late Carl Albert (Vicious Rumors).

One of the things that makes this band so great is their compositions, with great use of each instrument, a good balance of going outside of the metal box with their use of symphonic instruments and even a hint or two of some modern Jazz. They are one of the better bands when it comes to mixing the Classical with the Metal (thus their name Symphony X).

This is one of those bands like Dream Theater where each of the musicians are top notch. Once this disc reaches your player it will stay there for a very long time.

Another Winner From Symphony X!.......2006-09-06

I have 4 Symphony X albums, and I believe I have found their best music. Divine Wings of Tragedy is surely one of my favorites of the 4 (Twilight in Olympus, The Odyssey, and V The New Mythology Suite being the other 3). Definitely worth all 5 stars. Symphony X makes lots of amazing music. I heartily recommend all 4 titles that I mentioned. They are all very full and rich, and will engage your brain. Very entertaining.

"On the edge of paradise/Tears of woe fall, cold as ice".......2006-07-25

Thus begins Part I of track 8, The Divine Wings of Tragedy, a 20 minute and 41 second extravaganza that on its own rates five stars. Part I is sang a cappella, with almost a barber shop quartet sound, and is followed by a power metal instrumental, the contrast working very well. Five additional parts complete the track, four of excellent vocals and another instrumental that covers more than six minutes. Normally that long of an instrumental would lose me, but there is so much variation here that the entire section holds my interest. This long track seems a harbinger of their greatest work, V: The New Mythology Suite (one of my top five). In fact, the words "Dies Irae" are printed in the insert at the end of the long instrumental, although I do not hear them voiced at any time. However, "day of wrath" (the translation of dies irae) is sang in the last stanza of the song preceding the long instrumental. As you probably know, these latin words are in the first and 11th song on V. Of Sins and Shadows and especially The Accolade are very good cuts also, but overall I cannot give the Divine Wings CD five stars. I can provide no technical reasons for this. It is simply a matter of after having listened to V, or The Odyssey, I am ready to listen to them again immediately. After listening to Divine Wings, the impression is that I want to listen to it again, but not until later. And basically that is how I decide all my four and five star choices. Devin Townsend continues to produce quality music, in his own twistedly brilliant way. Ziltoid is the perfect compliment/new addition to his catalog of musical masterpieces. It has bits of all the elements he has used throughout his career, insane heaviness (like SYL), melodic brooding tonalities (like solo-Terris-era work) and a killer concept that makes you wanna run out and mainline caffeine!! Okay, that might be pushing it, but this album, balls to bones, kicks and shreds its way immediately into the upper eschalon of great metal!! Anyone who even remotely thinks they are a fan of metal must own this album....You are just pitiful if you don't...Support Metal!! ALL HAIL ZILTOID!!!

More Sardonic, Heavy, Atmospheric Experimentation From Devin.......2007-07-02

I have always enjoyed Devin Townsend's unique musical sensibilities and style, and the latest release from this musical iconoclast is no exception....some might find the kitschy, sardonic sci-fi trappings and storyline of this latest project a bit much, but any fan of "Mystery Science Theater" or Kurt Vonnegut will feel right at home here.

The first completely "solo" project from Devin (although he has always worn many hats both in SYL and DTB, on this release he literally was a one-man show, writing all the lyrics and music, and performing on all instruments, assuming all production roles, etc.), it is different from both his older Strapping Young Lad and Devin Townsend Band projects in that it is more humorous and conceptual thematically, but musically it is very much a continuation of his previous work.

This latest epic from Devin is a campy science-fiction concept album telling the story of an omniscient alien being named Ziltoid who needs a rare substance from Earth in order to be able to bend time and space to his will....and that substance is....coffee. Black. Fun stuff, but not for those who take everything too seriously. I have personally always enjoyed Mr. Townsend's quirky sense of humor, which has always been revealed in smaller doses on his previous work, and had fun seeing him fully embrace and run with it on this latest offering. Musically, and for fans of his previous work, this album has some great, heavy, bombastic metal moments as well as sublime, spacy prog-rock interludes, coming off like SYL's "The New Black" meet"Terria" and "Ocean Machine". Recommended!

Nerdy Musical Fun!!.......2007-06-10

I am a relative newcomer to the the world of Devin Townsend, and wow....have I been missing out or what? Devin dished out brutality in Strapping Young Lad, beautiful songs and melody in the Devin Townsend material that I have heard so far (Synchestra and Ocean Machine with the former likely being one of the most perfect albums of its type ever made), and sprinkles humor into everything he does.
This album is a great mix of all three aspects and is simply dripping with FUN for progressive/metal fans like me.
I highly recommend following the lyrics and the liner notes as they really help to bring the story together. I will say that there are some minor story flaws, but he wasn't trying to write Operation Mindcrime here.
I don't think there is a song on here that doesn't have something really cool going on. Highly recommended!

"Hey slacker, wake up!!".......2007-06-05

Something inside me says people reviewing this album will focus more on the concept rather than the music presented on this disc, so I'll leave it up to them. All I will say is that Devin Townsend Presents Ziltoid the Omniscient is a sci-fi tale about a guitar-playing alien who pays a visit to planet Earth. To further investigate the plot, all you need to do is buy the album and read the booklet, which includes all lyrics except for "Hyperdrive", and it also features passages that are not sung/spoken in the songs -- then you should have a fairly solid idea on what the story is about.

For starters, Ziltoid is a solo album in the truest sense. Devin Townsend wrote all songs, recorded, mixed, and engineered everything by himself. He also played all instruments, except the drums which he programmed on the Drumkit From Hell software that Meshuggah's Fredrik Thordendal sent him. Granted the drumming does not sound as organic as, say, Terria, the somewhat industrial beats, juxtaposed with tons of samples, give off an alien-like quality to the songs, which definitely fits the concept of this album. This is also what distinguishes Ziltoid from the earlier Devin Townsend records musically. Other than that, traces of both Synchestra and Accelerated Evolution, the two previous albums, can be detected in some of the songs here. A good dose of aggressiveness and openness of either album turn into pivotal points in the course of the album, depending on the mood intended to portray.

Those who consider Ocean Machine Devin Townsend's unrivaled masterpiece will be pleasantly surprised by tracks like "Hyperdrive", which is defined by clean harmonies, liquidy guitar phrases, and the droning, meditative atmosphere. Also, "Color Your World", at nearly ten minutes, establishes a context in which Devin deftly packs both the harmonic brilliance of Terria and the peaceful, unique aural experience of Ocean Machine. The classically influenced midsection transitions into the Biomech aesthetic so seamlessly that you feel like you're listening to both masterpieces in a single composition. Speaking of seamless transitions, the spoken-like death growls on "Planet Smasher" turn into Devin's trademark confident clean singing in the blink of an eye as well.

"By Your Command" and "Ziltoida Attaxx!!!" both contain Devin's theatrical, less intensified SYL type of growling fused with hilarious lyrical content, and his classic epic arrangements defined by rising synth modulations and furious double bass drum battery. The latter even features an unexpected guitar solo atop a dissonant rhythmic cluster. To balance things out, Devin offers his deepest clean singing to date -- which eerily evokes Dan Swano at his most expressive -- on another mammoth number, "Solar Winds", poised to become many a fan's favourite off of this record, along with "The Greys", a modern take on the sounds of his first solo album. Halfway through the song, heavier guitar accents come in rolling whilst the classical touch of Terria's symphonic quality crops up. This is music with immense impact. Period.

Being a rock-opera kind of thing, there is plenty of narrated sections on most of the tunes, which can be annoying at first. However, after repeated listens, these voice-overs will fade into the background, much like the spoken stuff in the intro of Terria's "Earth Day". Also, the Ocean Machine-like material, which boasts profound ambient passages filled with tidal waves of churning guitar riffage, utilizes Devin's vocals as an extra dimension to the music, rather than a vocalist simply adding his nth melody to an already challenging and well crafted composition. "N9", for instance, is one of these songs. Aside from the heavier Strapping Young Lad-inspired guitar attacks and smashing rhythms, the piece is carried by wonderfully arranged, sweeping melodies distilled into dissonant passages of Middle Eastern textures. Amidst all of this are Devin's otherworldly vocal lines interwoven into the layers. It's simply beautiful.

The first and last tracks serve more as an intro and outro to the album, and track eight, "Omnidimensional Creator", at less than a minute, is more of a precursor to the grandiose "Color Your World". Overall, Ziltoid is a cosmos of sound, which deliberately functions as a genre-crosser whilst retaining Devin Townsend's truly unique songwriting vision.

Considering that Devin has put both the DTB and SYL on hold and stated that he will solely focus on his solo career, hopefully he will put out more albums that continue to shock and please his loyal fan base.
