Functioning On Impatience is littered with punishing metallic riffs, coupled with crazed technical runs that throw the proceedings into utter chaos, and is anchored by an utterly distorted bass, peculiar guitar noise and more time changes, tempo shifts and stop-start parts than one can possibly keep up with. Serving as a perfect compliment to the music's irresistible malevolence, Sean Ingram's challenging lyrics are delivered with such bile and power that their vehemence may never be replicated. While COALESCE's internal strife and divergent personalities eventually silenced this lumbering behemoth, ultimately the music remains as everything else fades to black, and Functioning On Impatience cements COALESCE's place in hardcore like few albums before it or since.

Coalesce's "F.O.I.".......2007-01-03

this may be their finest work in the span of coalesce's career. it's a very focused, angry album. the opening track is a kick in the face. you get a moment to recover with some filler for track two then the real beating begins. it finishes out with the fiercest song i believe they ever recorded, "a disgust for details". if you're a fan or just wondering what coalesce was all about, i'd highly recommend this album for your collection. a must for any of you dirty kids who think hardcore is the best new genre to hit the streets, you can hear what was being put out before all these high school kids decided to get guitars and try to disguise love songs to their girlfriends with some heavy music. this is what metalcore was all about.

Possibly the Best Hardcore CD Ever.......2006-01-08

I would actually say that the $15.98 asking price is arguably worth this CD. But since you can find it elsewhere much cheaper (blue collar press), check that out.
Either way, from Sean Ingram's rockapella intro to the disc and right until the final notes, this disc flows like no other hardcore album does, with close calls to Converge's "Jane Doe" and Botch's "We are the Romans." Fans of either of those bands or albums should find solace in "FOI."
Anyone wishing to remain "core," but add a little braininess to their windmill kicks should check out this album.

A Disgust for Details.......2003-03-07

Ok, this has got to be hands down one of the hardest hitting hardcore albums of the past few years. This album is brutal. An amazing hardcore album by an amazing hardcore band with amazing talent. A superb offering and effort, from everyone envolved. The layout and packaging is the best I've ever seen, Second Nature is a great label that release great stuff, and this is up there with the best. The LP packaging is truly breath takeing. Ed Rose is probably the best and most underated producer around. He does a great job with this album, as I said before, he is an amazing producer. And the band...it's Coalesce for God's sake!! Definatly one of the best hardcore bands of the "new generation", a band that will go down in hardcore history for their chaotic live shows, unmatched talent, and for albums like this. Sean Ingram is a lyrical genious, and has an amazing voice that is truly unique. This is probably my favorite Coalesce album; it's short, brutal, and heavy. The way hardcore should be.

The Schubert Transcriptions are Well Done.......2003-10-28

All the music here is based on music of Schubert and all but one of the pieces is a fairly straightforward transcription of his music by pianist/composer Leopold Godowsky (1870-1938). But the big piece here is the Passacaglia which is a twenty-minute original work based on the first few measures of the Schubert Unfinished Symphony (not the big tune, but the misterioso opening). Here pianist Konstantin Scherbakov has superior competition in the recording of Marc-André Hamelin whose interpretation is also available at Amazon coupled with his gargantuan (and important) Piano Sonata. If your main reason for considering this CD is to get the Passacaglia I'd advise you to go to Hamelin; Scherbakov, while competent, comes across as a bit subdued in the Passacaglia.

However, 50 minutes of the music here is made up of Godowsky's transcriptions and they are a delight. All but two of the 16 transcriptions are from songs. The exceptions are Ballet Music from 'Rosamunde,' and the 3rd Moment Musical, Op. 94, No. 3, each of which is elaborated in Godowsky's virtuosic style and played with sparkle by Scherbakov.

The real treasures, though, are the song transcriptions. Presumably Amazon will eventually list them, but they haven't at the time of this review so I will list them here: Trockne Blumen; Ungeduld; Gute Nacht; Das Wandern; Heidenröslein; Am Meer; Liebesbotschaft; An Mignon; Morgengruss; Die Forelle; Wiegenlied; Wohin?; Die junge Nonne; Litanei. As you can see they are all very familiar to those of us who love Schubert's lieder. Some are more elaborated than others. For instance, 'Ungeduld' ('Impatience') is a real barn-burner; as you undoubtedly know (as I do from having accompanied the song), the piano accompaniment is itself quite virtuosic and when Godowsky adds in the singer's melodic line and then further fills in the harmonies it becomes a real knucklebuster, and the tag-end of each verse 'Dein is mein Herz, und soll es ewig bleiben' ('Your heart is mine and shall ever be') bursts with joy. In the same vein is 'Das Wandern' ('The Wanderer'), the first of the Schöne Müllerin songs. Godowsky's elaboration makes the song all the more insouciant by adding crushed notes and leggerissimo arpeggios. Clever fellow.

Entirely different in character is 'Morgengruss' ('Morning Greeting') whose peaceful character is altered subtly by slyly changed harmonies. Shades of Percy Grainger and 'Blithe Bells'! Still, it's quite effective. Much the same thing is done with 'Wohin?' ('Whither?', sometimes called 'The Brooklet').

Scherbakov does a beautiful job catching the mood of each piece. He seems to be in the process of recording a lot of Godowsky's music, I see, but this is the first volume I've come across. On the evidence of this disc I'd say I'll have to reserve judgment about how that will go. Certainly we already have several complete recordings of the Chopin/Godowsky Études (foremost of which is the set by Hamelin). But there is plenty of other Godowsky music that either has not been recorded or has not been recorded well (I remember being put off Godowsky years ago because of what I now realize was a poor performance by a German pianist whose name I have mercifully forgotten) and Scherbakov could fill in a big gap in the recording of these works.

I bought this CD with certain hesitation because it is a soundtrack. However, when hearing it the subtle sounds, the masterful interpretations, the beautiful voices of Marjorie Vance and Elisabeth Guy-Kummer and the master direction of Rene Clemencic, moved my soul tremendously. La Princesse Elide, Carnaval et Revolte, Armande and La Mort de Moliere will be, for sure, amongst the favourites of most listeners of this not to be missed album, a rare find in Amazon.com although normal in Amazon.fr. And hear carefully to the compelling percussions in La Foire de Toulouse. Buy and enjoy.

A perfect way to introduce yourself to the Clemencic Consort.......2003-11-12

The early-music group led by Rene Clemencic puts on a tremendous performance in this soundtrack disc of the 1978 film MOLIERE. This compilation allows you to sample the consort's instrumentals (uniquely historical) their lively interpretations, excellent vocals by the Deller consort, plus original Clemencic compositions. A great way to introduce yourself to this reknowned group of international artists.

Captivating ear and heart.......2005-01-27

Having listened to this disc over and over again over the past few days, I have come to the conclusion that, at least as far as the music on this disc is concerned, the encomium of a Swedish Amazonite is not entirely undeserved: This is music which captivates the ear and then the heart and demonstrates quite aptly the folly of all who pooh-pooh at French baroque music as a genre. The two cantatas on this CD are comparatively early works by Rameau, but despite their brevity show his musical taste and efficiency in a very good light, especially when so well performed as they are here (with the adorable Sandrine Piau in "L'Impatience" and bass Bernard Deletré in "Thétis"). The "Pièces de clavecin en concert" were written considerably later, when Rameau was already regarded as a maestro, and although I would have preferred to have all five of the pieces on this disc instead of the three which Coin and his team have recorded, I must say that I am impressed with this sweet, enchanting sound. The only question-mark in my mind is with regard to the recording quality. This is quite acceptable, but even after hearing the disc any number of times, I still cannot quite visualize the positioning of the musicians during the performance, with the violin in particular seeming to elude all my attempts to pinpoint it in the stereo panorama. But perhaps this is a result of the blending of the period instruments; at any rate, the result is more than entertaining and deserves a close listening, perhaps especially from those who mock French baroque.

The ultimate!!!.......2002-01-26

I'll start with my ultimate verdict:
If I would bring only ONE recording to a desert island, it would be this one. I have heard a lot of early music recordings and I play myself the baroque cello and viola da gamba. First of all, this music is so extremely well written. It is sheer quality all the way. Rameau's Piéces en Concert are here performed with a flute, violin, gamba and obligato harpsicord, which means that the harpsichord has an individual solo part like the other instruments. Often, the flute and violin plays the same part and the sound result is amazing. The extremely brilliant music requires some very outstanding musicians. There is no reason in comparing this cd with other attempts like the disc with Cristophe Rousset. There is simply no competition! The Ensemble Limoges consists of the most brilliant baroque musicians that the music world can offer today. The power of the music is extraordinary, it is joyful and deeply tragic, elegant and sometimes really jazzy! The two cantatas are also very nice and the singers excellent. Though it remains a fact that the three concerts is the absolute highlight of the disc. And by the way ANY baroque cd today!!
If you consider buying only one or maybe your first recording with baroque music, than GET THIS ONE!! It is already a classic and one of the real "masterworks" of the recording history!!!
