The German countertenor Andreas Scholl takes risks on his latest CD, Wayfaring Stranger, and not all of them pay off. It is a recording of 17 English-language folksongs, some of them very well known, such as "Down by the Salley Gardens" and "My love is like a red, red rose." This is not usually a repertory tackled by classically trained singers, who can sound prissy, but Scholl's clear, plaintive alto, with its rich low notes and gentle top range, is a quite plausible vehicle. "Wild Mountain Thyme" evokes real sadness, while "Barbara Allen" aches with unhappy love. A surprise awaits in the ballad "Henry Martin," as Scholl uses his rough, nondescript baritone to identify the hero. It is rather a jolt. At least, it is good to know his voice has actually broken. In this song, too-feminine endings in the lyric fall clumsily on stressed beats. Scholl does nothing to counter the infelicity; English, of course, is not his mother tongue. In the beautiful title track, which opens the disc, he sings endearingly of a "why-farring straincher." The accompaniments for various combinations of chamber orchestra, lute, dulcimer, and harp tend to be slushy, sentimental, and over-fussy. The bass uncomfortably parallels the tune in "Salley Gardens" and would have won a big red line through it in old-fashioned harmony classes. Still, on the whole, this is a worthwhile disc. Scholl clearly loves the songs he sings with great tenderness, and he deserves credit for his courage even where the experiment fails. --Rick Jones

5 out of 5 stars Beauty.......2006-05-12

This is one of the most beautiful CDs I know: so pure in tone, so haunting in its harmonies. The reservations of some other listeners seem to make this quality a sort of fault, and perhaps it is if you like your ballads gritty; but I find the selections, the arrangements, and Scholl's singing so ravishing that I felt I had to write this review just to urge everyone to try it. Listen to "I Will Give My Love ..." You might feel your heart stop.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful. .......2006-03-14

This is the perfect CD to listen to one a cold winter's afternoon with a warm cup of tea and a good book. Scholl's voice is so pure and smoothing. The orchestral arrangements are very creative and lush - sort of an English version of Canteloube's Chants d'Auvergne. The one down note I would have is eventhough Scholl's voice is very expressive his phrasing can be a little square. I would have liked him to take a bit more liberties with the sentences. The Orpheus Chamber Orchestra musical fluidity more than makes up for any of Scholl's rigidity however.
A recommended buy.

5 out of 5 stars Wayfaring Stranger: Folksongs.......2005-10-26

This is a fantastic CD. The countertenor voice of Andreas Scholl gives an entirley new
meaning to traditional folk music. The orchestration is just enough to give a haunting sound to each selection. ' Wayfaring stranger' and 'Wild mountain thyme' are two selections that make the purchasing of the CD worth the pice.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good.......2005-03-05

At first I was suspicious due to the album's sleek marketing and desing. But right from the start I was delighted to hear the lush arrangements of these peculiar songs.

Granted, we do hear quite a lot of strings and even some sound effects that make the music sound dangerously "romantic", or worse, "exotic"...

And yes, the arrangements become very similar to those used by Sarah Brightman, Bocelli and other musical aberrations.... but Scholl's scholarly perfection of voice and delivery save the day. Not only that, but his (limited) potential to characterize the music is in full capacity... especially in the songs where he actually sings in his baritone in a self-contained duet.

Yes, the strings are too warm. And yes, there are parts that could even fit as background music for Disneyworld rides... And yes, it can at times sound cheap and "postcard-ish".........

But, truth be told, sometimes a Coke tastes better than Bordeaux, and sometimes a "Little Debbie" cake hits the spot better than the Sachertorte.

So, if you want to listen to songs that are warm and glowing -albeit effectist-, sung by a first class musician... this album will do the trick.

For those who are new to Scholl, I strongly reccomend his earlier CD's --namely those containing the Handel Arias, the English Lute Songs, and the German Baroque lieder.

As for "Wayfaring Stranger", play close attention to "My Love is a Red Red Rose"... If you've ever felt true love, this is the song to make you cry.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2005-01-11

Putting this wonderful voice together with an easy-listening style of ochestration was simply a brilliant idea.

This compilation will surely bring this wondrous voice to the attention of a wholly different public to the one which presently adores Andreas, and secondly, it will introduce these folk treasures to an audience at present virtually ignorant of them.

Add this one to your Scholl collection

5 out of 5 stars absolutely bad to the bone.......2006-07-16

This album is on of the few that stays in constant rotation in my collection; I am primarily a bluegrass fan, but this album rocks, especially Myron Dove's bass lines. check out "false hearted lover, "ruben's train", almost as good as seeing Tony live....

4 out of 5 stars Great Live Furtado.......2005-01-08

I've never had the opportunity to hear Tony live, but this recording is the next best thing. While I don't think it's as good as the really strong and focused studio version AMERICAN GYPSY, it has plenty of surprises, interesting twists, good song selection, tight playing and extended jamming.

What I like; Myron Dove's strong bass. Paul McCandless' signature horn sound, weaving, sweeping and leading the group in a jazzy direction. Of course Tony's slide (acoustic and electric), although his vocal sound is weaker than on his studio recordings. Especially great is the final track, Waiting For Guiteau, with Tony on banjo and a slightly differnt line up.

This guy and this music is mature yet youthful, funky yet traditional, great yet not jaded with stardom....

3 out of 5 stars There's a lot going on here.......2004-03-18

That's right. There is a lot of music going on in this album. This is a collection of live songs done by Tony's group.

The playing is very solid. Guitar work is superb; the keyboards sound great too when thrown in.

The choice of songs is really diverse - maybe a little too diverse as it almost seems all over the board.

The music combines all kinds of genre's thrown together. So there's some brilliant folk style guitar ala Leo Kottke, there's some rock'n'roll, some bluesy-guitar, and then there's even a touch of what sounds like smooth jazz.

I have the impression that this CD will appeal most likely to adult listeners who like to go to their local coffee house and hear live "good music".

According to director Joel Cohen, American spirituals are "the untutored but vigorous religious music of Colonial America, and the rugged, folk-derived spiritual song of the countryside." It will be well worth your while to hear for yourself these musically rich, involving, and often exciting tunes from Southern shape-note songbooks, out-of-print hymnals, and other early manuscript sources. Don't miss this one. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2004-02-23

This very enjoyable CD is an anthology of notable American religous music from the end of the 18th century to approximately the end of the Civil War. It concentrates on the so-called shape note and related traditions. Drawn heavily from old hymnals and song books, this CD features a number of lovely pieces, including some by the remarkable Boston composer William Billings. Some pieces are presented in parallel with the secular songs and music used to develop the sacred music. Beautifully performed.

5 out of 5 stars american medieval.......2002-04-27

When I mention shaped-note singing to most people, they think of the most raucus form of gospel, which may be fun, but which has little beauty to it. Far from it, true shaped-note is an American, energized form of the medieval and renaisance music of Europe, and the Boston Camarata's background in early music does so well to bring out its madrigal qualities. In addition, the recording itself is of such clarity, that the nearly three-dimensional effect of its antiphonal singing is better represented than on any other early american album I've heard

5 out of 5 stars Oh! Pure beauty!.......2001-02-20

This CD is absolutely amazing; the first time I listened to it, I was lukewarm and contemplated returning it. However, the second time around, I was crying throughout. The first song is a jewel, and my heart breaks upon each listen. The women vocalists are angels, and the male voices are earthy, yet just as sweet (and Anne Azema, I need hardly mention, is a goddess, as always). The acoustics are also delightful: the sound is just as if they're singing in a little church out in the middle of "nowhere," much like the church on the cover (I adore that cover photograph).

Some CDs are good "homework" music; this one is not. You cannot listen to it without paying rapt attention. I am in the habit of putting on headphones and turning it on sometimes when I go to bed, and just lying there in the dark with the exquisite harmonies and poignant lyrics wafting through my ears. Buy this now, and try it. It will bring tears to your eyes.

5 out of 5 stars A Revelation!.......1999-09-01

The outstanding Boston Camerata introduces the listener to early american religous music, which is quite different and much more exciting than the bland, uninvloving tunes in the hymnals that are sitting in church pews these days. Anyone interested in American cultural and/or musical history needs this!

I've been following Susan's musical career for many years now, and I've enjoyed watching her mature as an instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter. American Gypsies is without a doubt her best effort yet. With a voice reminiscent of Sarah McLachlan, and with songs steeped deeply in the American folk and rock traditions, Susan explores very personal and heartfelt themes -- at times vulnerable, but always with an inner strength and confidence that is the hallmark of her work. Susan assembled a top-notch group of musicians for this CD, and recorded each song with loving care. Give this disc a try -- you'll be glad you did!

Susan Elaine has a soft and compelling style that makes you want to know more about her and the thoughts that go into her original compositions. This is worth a listen.

4 out of 5 stars Return To Quality.......2001-03-01

I love this album. It reminded me of the old Beatle albums where every song was different but good. I particularly loved the song Bethrothal because of its unusual but haunting sound. The production quality on that song is outstanding. Also several cuts really rocked. The quality of the musicianship and the excitement of the production left me wanting to hear this album again and again. I am sure that when the music industry picks up on this album, Susan Elaine will go places. Even if it's just other artists covering her songs.
