Editorial Reviews
Kyllander began his career in theater and dance at a young age. His first songs were written at the age of 8, and his love of cinema developed shortly thereafter. His songs are stories that pulse to the rhythm of film. Listeners of Kyllander's debut album, Untaught, will find a cinematic dialogue unfolding before them. The songs are moving images; tales of desire, chaos, contemplation, and self-assertion. Kyllander follows a long line of groundbreaking artists whose music withstands the passage of time. Untaught is a raw, rule-breaking, and fresh change from the detached, dull offerings found on most radio dials. He employs instinct, emotion, and experience instead of formal training. The result is a combination of experimentation infused with elements of jazz, folk, pop, theater, electronic, industrial and cinema music. The diverse palate of styles on Untaught offers many unique, rich and intriguing songs. "Ask Yourself" hangs sweetly on the last moments of a romantic relationship, and tells the tale the way only a poignant alt-country hit could. The trip-hop influenced "These Lips" grooves with tenacious honesty about unfulfilled needs. "Your Whore" teases from a naughty, uncharted male perspective, and vibrates as a club-worthy anthem. The atmospheric, cinematic songs "Marionette," "Night's End," and "Cloud to Ride" break the conventions of traditional songwriting and display a natural wisdom and skill far beyond his years. The album closes with a bittersweet, pop-oriented and simply stated "Time to Go." Kyllander's music is sure to generate intrigue and passionate praise throughout the music community. He will continue to challenge constructions of thought and sound, and has already begun work on a follow-up album to Untaught.
