If you've never seen kids harmonizing on a street corner you didn't grow up in any major city in the 1950s. The music was pure, the lyrics understandable, and the theme was love--unrequited, lost, and found. Where classic doo-wop is concerned, the leader usually boasted the best voice, but his or her supporting cast was of equal importance when it came to vocalizing the likes of "Blue Moon," "I Wonder Why," "Barbara-Ann" and "Get a Job," performed here by the Marcels, the Regents, and Dion & the Belmonts, respectively. Also included among the 20 artists featured on this hit-laden 22-song primer are Frankie Lymon & the Teenagers ("Why Do Fools Fall in Love?"), the Monotones ("Get a Job"), and the Flamingos ("I Only Have Eyes for You"). Decades after these songs filled the airwaves, they still elicit memories and a desire to sing along--in the background, of course. --Cal Greilsamer

5 out of 5 stars Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30

Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.

5 out of 5 stars Top Shelf.......2007-01-04

This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23

THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.

5 out of 5 stars Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14

This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway

5 out of 5 stars Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17

If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Good sound quality. A lot better than 8-track the last time I listened to it.

5 out of 5 stars Street Corner Talking.......2006-12-09

A great album dipping into the blues. Kick back and let er go. I rate it as their best with hellbound train a close second.

4 out of 5 stars Savoy Brown, Street Corner Talking.......2006-03-22

The quality is as expected from such great musicians. It is not quite as good as Raw Sienna. But Raw Sienna was Savoy Browns greatest album. I would recommend this for all Savoy Brown fans.

4 out of 5 stars test of time.......2006-02-18

Have to agree with the reviewers calling this a classic. If I go back and listen to their previous stuff, it doesn't really hang with the likes of Beck, Fleetwood Mac, or even Zep. If you want to hear blues masters, get Then Play On. Yes this album veers into boogie, but what counts to me is that it withstands the test of time. It still sounds fresh and original. I'd give it five stars if it wasn't a bit short on material.

5 out of 5 stars Street Corner Talking.......2005-09-11

I was thrilled to find this. I have always loved it but have not heard it for 20 years or more. It is just as good as I remember it. I think I am even more impressed with the musicianship that I was back then, because I know more now. Great CD!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate blues and boogie band!.......2006-10-27

Kim Simmonds has been Savoy Brown for doggone near 40 years now (Shakedown came out in 1967). Every incarnation of the band has had Simmonds on guitar. Early formation saw part of the band (Dave Peverett, Roger Earl, and Tone Stevens) split to form FOGHAT.

Just like there's no mistaking Simmonds' guitar, the same can be said for Chris Youlden's voice. And this two LP combo on one CD gives you a few of Savoy's best tracks.

First, I think 'Tell Mama' is one of my all-time favorite songs PERIOD! Here it is from the Street Corner Talking release. 'Let It Rock' is another goodie. 'Can't Get Next To You' is a Motown ditty that's been redone a time or two by different folks. I think Rare Earth did a great job on it, but Savoy Brown does a darned fine job, as well.

'Troubled By These Days And Times' and 'If I Could See n End'... Hmmm. Prophetic titles, eh? (Hockey term)

'Wang Dang Doodle' is spectazmagoric! I made that up, but I think you get the idea.

But to round out the whole thing is the epic tale of the 'Hellbound Train.'

"I'm goin down the road on the hellbound train. Take a last look baby 'cause you won't see me again."

What to expect? Very good guitar. Unique vocals. What I classify as psychedelic blues. Extended jams to showcase Simmonds talent.

What not to expect? Mainstream, Clapton/King blues. Foghat-esque boogie. Two or three minute songs. Can't tell a good story in that length of time!

When you get tired of hearing the various 'new' bands who sound the same vocally or sound the same as far as guitar is concerned, etc., just grab any of the early Savoy Brown albums - this pair is a great place to start!

5 out of 5 stars Sound of Harmony.......2007-03-25

This is easily my favorite Album by the Persuasions. The song selection and delivery are excellent. The arrangements are melodic. I play this one over and over. Buffalo Soldiers reminds us (African Americans) of how brave our ancesters were in the face of horrible circumstances and situations coming out of the grip of slavery. If you enjoy Accapella singing check this out.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Acappella!.......2007-01-12

What beautiful soulful music. Recommend it to anyone looking for a great acapella group.

5 out of 5 stars Mahvelous....Simply Mahvelous.......2006-03-19

I stumbled upon this by mistake. As I cleaned out some old tapes that I purchased during the 70's, I ran across this gem. Now, I had not heard this group since the 70's and definitely thought that this tape was beyond listening. But after popping it in, the tears started flowing. Oh My! It's love all over. The simultaneous weaving of the vocals brings about auditory pleasures that are a far cry from the sounds of today. Each voice is like a fine tuned instrument. As I write this, I still have that 30 year old tape and a new CD simply called "Street Corner Symphony"...What a gem!

5 out of 5 stars I Am Definitely Persuaded.......2005-12-31

Of all the instruments out there, the first and still the finest by far is the human voice. This CD makes the point emphatically. This is real, old-fashioned, four-part harmony - stunningly tight and precise a cappella. So much music today is sloppy and self-indulgent, with technology covering up the shabbiness. Here there is nowhere to hide, this is pure music.

The virtuoso level of performance is consistent throughout, from heart-wrenching blues, Buffalo Soldier, to smooth love crooning, So Much In Love, to foot-stompin' jubilee, Be Good To Me Baby. The pacing, beat, and rhythm are all there in abundance - with no drum kit in sight. When the Persuasions take you through their tribute to The Temptations, Tempts Jam, you'll find yourself wondering if you actually heard what you think you heard.

The energy, passion, technical excellence, and sheer joy contained in these tracks is enough to blow the spots off a leopard.

5 out of 5 stars The Ultimate in Acapella!!.......2005-01-26

"Street Corner Symphony" is, in my opinion, the ultimate work of the Persuasions!! This particular piece of musical vocal mastery is one I have listened to for over 20 years. I purchased the CD and each time I play this master piece, I can't help but listen to it over and over again as I find myself singing right along with the group. THIS IS A MUST PURCHASE and I promise will be a life time part of your musical library!!!

4 out of 5 stars When does listening to Doo Wop not make you feel better?.......2005-05-05

I came across this album when I was trying to put together some Halloween music to get in the right mood to assist in the dispensing of candies to costumed visitors (when I would rather be saving the candy for myself) and I came across the Mighty Echoes cover of "Monster Mash." We are talking about the definitive Halloween song with "Monster Mash," but it was refreshing to hear a slightly different version of the classic novelty hit done by a quartet of guys who can really sing and sing a cappella.

Actually, while all of these albums are done in the Doo Wop style of four-part harmony, very few of them were originally considered Doo Wop songs (e.g., "Sh-Boom" and "Blue Moon"). Yet you will be hard pressed to remember that songs like "Fools Fall in Love," "Teenager in Love," and "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," were not always considered Doo Wop songs once you hear them done by the Mighty Echoes. "Monster Mash" is a prime example of a song that you could well like a lot better than the original, while "Remember When" and "What Time Is It?" are other candidates as well. As you would expect, this is a fun album, and if you are like me you can pick and choose which of the four vocal parts you can try and sing along with (I can never stick with one for long and usually end up touching on all four by the time the song is done). The Mighty Echoes also push the envelope a bit in terms of the Doo Wop style on songs like "Do You Love Me," where the lead vocalist goes off of his own a bit more.

The Mighty Echoes been performing since 1986 and the current line up for the group consists of bass Charles Davis, tenor John Lathan, high tenor Jon Rubin, and baritone Harvey Shield. "Doo Wop Til You Drop" is apparently a re-released of the group's third album, "A Cappella Doo-Wop, Vol. 2," which was originally released on Primarily A Cappella. Hopefully the move to a new label will result in their other albums getting a second chance with a bigger audience as well. If you have enjoyed the Doo Wop style for a long time, and it is not exactly a musical approach that is continuing to gain fans today, then you will want to check out this album.

5 out of 5 stars The Second Best A-Capella Album I ever heard.......2005-01-31

So what is the best a-capella album I've ever heard? That would be "Strike 3" by the Alley Cats. These two albums are heads and tails above the rest. Once you have listened to these songs, you'll realize that they contain the most pure, the most polished, and the most authentic doo wop sound you've ever heard. With these two albums you will hear deep resonant bases, incredible falsettos, and beautiful ballads. The best versions on this album are "What's Your Name", "Fools Fall in Love", and "Under the Boardwalk", but they're all great! Other rival doo wop groups can harmonize, but usually lack a top notch soloist. Trust me on this one! You'll love these albums so much, you'll be tempted to buy a more powerful stereo just so you can crank these songs to a new level! On a side note, the Mighty Echoes were featured on an episode of "Who's the Boss" with Tony Danza many years ago. One warning though: When making future purchaces by this group, be aware that the Mighty Echoes have experienced numerous personnel changes over the last five years.

Album Description

This was the first CD of The Ying Quartet's acclaimed Life Music series. LifeMusic is a series of commissions from established or emerging American composers, and each work draws on a different aspect of American life. Made up of three brothers and a sister, The Ying Quartet has toured the world since its formation at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York in 1988. The Quartet won the Naumberg Chamber Music Award in 1993. Natives of Chicago, the Ying siblings began their career as an ensemble in 1992 in the farm town of Jesup, Iowa (population 2000) as the first recipients of a National Endowment for the Arts grant to support chamber music in rural America.

5 out of 5 stars A dazzling and gripping anthology of contemporary quartet writing.......2005-12-21

Though all works on this disc were written in 1999 or 2000, the listener need not fear any academic experimentation or sounds that are less than pleasant to the ear. All four pieces are solidly tonal, and clearly written from a desire to communicate. And so they do. Surprisingly, the quartet by the one "big name" represented here, Michael Torke, is by some margin the least interesting offering. It will be instantly recognizable to those familiar with his music: the signature syncopated rhythms and unapologetically optimistic mood are very much in evidence. I wondered, however, whether his style, with its brief, repetitive motifs, is all that suited to the string quartet medium. Only the middle movement brings some cantabile writing and a certain emotional charge, though to my ears it is not able to lift the piece as a whole much above the level of adeptly written, pleasant-sounding and inoffensive elevator music.
Carter Pann's "Love Letters" unabashedly takes its cue from Janaçek, though in fact it sounds more traditional than either of that composer's great quartets. It is cast in old-fashioned four-movement mould, and makes for interesting listening. The "Serenade" is particularly affecting, and the finale, "Passions", after a virtuoso opening settles obsessively on a haunting three-note theme that undergoes surprising and impressive permutations before the motorial agitation of the opening returns.
Paquito D'Rivera's work makes for interesting listening because of his unusual fusion of Latin American dance rhythms with more traditional string quartet idiom. The opening is highly atmospheric, and is dominated by a 5-note motto, that eventually recurs in tango-guise, after which other dance rhythms take over. In the end though, this `Village Street Quartet' seems too disjointed and overly concerned with instrumental effects (eventually the quartet even turns into a percussion ensemble) to sustain musical tension over a 15 minute span.
Finally, the pièce de résistance, the one absolute masterpiece that by itself makes this disc a must-buy for all string quartet aficionados, is Kevin Puts's "Dark Vigil". This is an incredibly impressive piece of quartet writing. After its arresting opening, in which tear-laden violins in their highest register set the mood, it easily sustains its emotionally compelling atmosphere over a single, 20-minute span. Inspired by the Colombine high school shootings, it follows the Beethovenian concept of "durch Nacht zum Licht", ending with an extended, ethereal in memoriam.
The Ying siblings play all this with great technical skill and emotional involvement - as they would, seeing that the works recorded here were commissioned by them in the framework of their ongoing "LifeMusic" project. The recording is clear and well-balanced. Very worthwhile!

Album Description

Throughout the 90's and into the new millennium, Carlos Guitarlos could be found playing guitar for pocket change on the streets of San Francisco's Mission District. Oftentimes, Carlos slept on those same cold streets where he eventually became a street-corner legend (The SF Bay Guardian name him the city's "Best Street Musician" in 1994). For the one-time musical leader of legendary Los Angeles roots-rockers Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs -- inspiration for the 1984 Van Halen song "Top Jimmy" -- it had been a long, slow downward spiral of divorce, diabetes, and drugs.

In the wake of his hard-knock life, Carlos found himself in a San Francisco hospital, fighting for his life with congestive heart failure. That experience, combined with the alcohol-related death of his friend and former band-mate, Top Jimmy, proved to be the catalyst of his personal turnaround. Within a couple of weeks of his hospital stay, with the help of his family, Carlos finally found his way back into a recording studio, hence the release of "Straight from the Heart" in 2003, which features the helping hands of old pals Mike Watt, John Doe, and Dave Alvin. The album's title track was written from his hospital bed.

Showcasing Carlos's stinging, fluid fretwork, lived-in vocals, and uncanny ability to write original songs in a wide variety of classic styles, the album made Rolling Stone Magazine's "Top Albums of 2003" and it was swiftly picked up for national distribution, a fact that was covered by Billboard Magazine, who described his re-emergence as "one of the most surprising music stories of the year."

The long-awaited follow up, "Hell Can Wait", features a stronger, healthier Carlos on another 19 original compositions. Guest artists include Marcy Levy (Clapton, Shakespear's Sister), Gene Taylor (Blasters, Fabulous Thunderbirds), and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a feast.......2005-09-21

This is a feast of traditional American music forms and wry twists. The opening cut sounds like Delta country blues, but perhaps with a little Leon Redbone circa 1970's thrown in. From there the CD rambles through many forms, such as the Fats-Domino-style "Here I Am," the soul stylings (with Marcy Levy) of "I Found a Love," the Los-Lobos-style (with David Hidalgo) "Shake My Blue" and the Doug-Sahm-jukebox music style of "I've Been Drinking Again." But the songs are all Carlos originals, with a co-write credited to Levy and Top Jimmy here and there.

The song "Baby's Coming Home Soon" (not sure exact title) starts out like a session from Dylan's "Everybody Must Get Stoned" and crosses paths with old time blues. "Sure Is Good" has the folks from Double Naught Spy Car throwing in what sounds like a TV theme I can't quite place. Hidalgo, Marcy Levy, and the wonderful Gene Taylor add spice, but it's Carlos who serves up this feast. If you don't like one kind of song, wait until the next cut: there's everything here from calypso style to a hard-to-sing-real-fast bluegrass-tinged number.
